ON THE COVER: To update the grounds of this Memphis residence, landscape architect Marley Fields removed the existing holly and gardenia hedges to improve views from the pool. Manicured American and Green Beauty boxwoods bring clean-lined geometry to its curving form, while various grasses and Doublefile Viburnum hedges continue the concentric layers. EDITOR’S LETTER

ZOOM LAND!

Back in June, I was moderating a Zoom meeting when my husband popped into my office to announce that we had a buyer for our house. “We need to look at this new place, pronto!” Lickety-split, we were moving out of the home we have lived in for nearly a decade and into a fab new rental further east and across from the beach. With all this taking place in the midst of Covid, my head was swirling. Like so many, our home has become a safe haven; nearly every hour of every day spent under that roof. As I write this note, it’s day three in our new place and I’m back to Zooming away. Yes, I had that moment of, “Yikes, what have we done?” But, more than ever, I am grateful to have a new home to settle into. I hope that this September/October issue brings you inspiration for your own home and a respite from what’s happening in the world.

ow more than ever, we’re contemplating what comforts bring joy to a home. To that end, designers are all about elements that create tranquility and contentment in private spaces, and found that it’s the simple things—cozy outdoor areas, the feel of soft linens and the play of light on a wall—that truly create happiness. For Brooke and Steve Giannetti, a designer and architect, pleasure can be found in the fresh air. “Connections to the garden are at the heart and soul of what we do,” says Steve. The husband-andwife team lives on a farm in Southern California where they’ve perfected the art of indoor-outdoor living. Their secret lies in making the great outdoors more intimate. “The feeling of being in an open meadow is sometimes not the most relaxing,” explains Steve. “We found that if you can break an alfresco space into loosely defined rooms—using features like a wall, a garden border or a tree—it makes a space feel more inviting and protected.” Their farm is full of examples, such as a seating arrangement placed under the canopy of a heritage oak, a fire pit ringed by a sectional or a table located by a vegetable garden. “Being outside is something we crave all year round,” Brooke says. “Living in nature calms us and brings us into the moment. It is perhaps the best luxury.” In Atlanta, designer Erika Hollinshead Ward finds luxury where the day begins and ends. “Having a bed that’s made with good linens is a treat,” she says. “You may not be able to control what happens in the world, but sleeping with beautiful linens is a joy.” Ward favors bamboo sheets for their sustainability and hand, noting the fabric becomes even softer with washing, and for curtains, she turns to cotton linen. “The weave of a crisp linen makes a great canvas for color and pattern,” she says. “To me, drapery is like art on the wall—and it can elevate and finish a space the same way a good blazer makes an outfit.” Brad Ford, a New York City designer, calls natural light “very healing” and seeks to add as much of it as possible to any dwelling, be it a city apartment or a house in the country. “In a dense metropolis, privacy can be an issue, so we like to add solar shades or sheers on windows,” he says. “These allow you privacy but also an amount of light.” Ford is also known for strategically placing mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces in a room to amplify the light. When designing a new home, he always advocates for as many windows as possible. “I would live in a glass house if I could,” he says. “I believe there is no better mood enhancer than natural light.” For these design professionals, providing easy indulgences is rewarding. “Many of my clients come home exhausted after a long day,” Ward says. “If I can give them a space that’s tailored to them, and that provides comfort, I am also fulfilled.”

TONE FOR COLOR GURU EVE ASHCRAFT, SUCCESSFUL SCHEMES BOIL DOWN TO INSTINCT. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

Eve Ashcraft knows a good palette. A formally trained painter, she earned her stripes as a color specialist for Martha Stewart and today touts an elite moniker—architectural color consultant— lending her expertise to residential homes, cultural institutions, public works projects and corporate branding the world over. Luxe called upon Ashcraft to learn more of her vibrant and innate approach. eveashcraft.com Formative influence. My mother was a painter. We had a yellow living room with fuchsia silk pillows. I would come home from school and she’d say, ‘Grab a brush’—she’d be painting the kitchen cabinets, again. It never occurred to me until I started working with clients that anyone would be afraid of color. Less is best. Fan decks are an instrument of torture. I’ve had clients test 30 colors before calling me. They were probably feeling insecure to begin with, and there’s this internet problem of, ‘I’ll just scroll to the next page and oops, it’s 4 a.m.’ Endless choice can have a negative effect, so I edit and distill my ideas before sharing.

Go-to paint trick. When I want a space to feel calm, one easy tip is to reduce contrast, especially between building components, like the trim, walls and ceiling. Make those elements the same or almost the same color and boundaries will disappear, creating a sense of spaciousness. Golden rule. The more color you have, the more color you can use. It’s like a great party—just jam everyone in there.

LX_COM33_Radar_5MinutesWith.indd 62

“I love using the resources and collections I keep in my studio to build these inspiration boards, either for my own edification or to show clients possibilities,” says Eve Ashcraft of her fantasy color palette.

photo: eve ashcraft.

Artist’s intuition. The only thing I love about getting older is that I’ve developed respect for my instincts. There are moments when I walk into a room and just know. I had clients with this tasteful blue parlor, but there was something sad about it. I said, ‘You’re going to kill me, but this room should be tobacco with cream trim.’ Six months later, I received a love letter about how they never leave it now. That kind of transformation is luxury.

Open DIALOGUE

THREE ARTISANS REFLECT ON THE CREATIVE JOURNEY AND FINDING COMFORT IN THEIR WORK. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY

RAYMOND BARBEROUSSE Studio PGRB, Miami

Raymond Barberousse’s path from architect to lighting designer is a telling reminder that good things can result from trying times. Shortly after buying a house in 2009, he was laid off from a Chicago architecture firm, leaving him to D.I.Y. much of his home’s furnishings. His sculptural lighting designs caught the eye of an owner of a local decor store, and the rest is history. Today, Barberousse and his wife split their time between Chicago and Miami drawing inspiration from both locales. “Chicago is energetic; Miami is more laid-back,” says the designer. As a member of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, he is an advocate for promoting inclusivity in the design community, but ultimately, he says, “It’s about the work. I want the work to represent itself.”

DENISE MCKENZIE-LEE

Enkee Ceramics, Chicago

“Don’t underestimate me,” says Denise McKenzie-Lee, known for her earthy ceramics layered with texture. Her foray into the medium began with a gift certificate to a pottery class. “I love entertaining, so I wanted to make my own set of dishes,” she recalls. “The instructor said, ‘It’s going to be a long time before you can do that.’ It wasn’t. I’m prolific when I become interested in something.” Her pieces, crafted with porcelain and stoneware, are perfectly imperfect reflecting a gritty sentiment. “I call it rustic modern. I’m attracted to textures: a rusty tray, rocks, rough edges, things that look burnt,” she says. Next up: experimenting with glass and non-functional work. No one is underestimating her now.

ANIKA POITIER

ASP & Company, Los Angeles Anika Poitier’s first love was film. Yet with a child on the way, she says, “I needed a creative outlet that was more kid-friendly.” So Poitier teamed up with her interior designer mother on a textile and accessories line. Their first collection centered on female artists and grew from there. A signature design is an infinity-style serpent. “It symbolizes strength and the journey to empowerment,” says the designer, who employs her filmmaker eye when selecting materials, and is drawn to linen for its transparent and natural qualities. “I love the way light shines through. We all want to exist in a calm, nurturing space.” Today, that notion rings more true than ever.

designers. The topmost level touts a wine bar and an elegant rooftop restaurant that follows in the footsteps of comparable RH eateries in New York City, West Palm Beach and Columbus, Ohio. In Charlotte, visitors will find charcoal-gray Venetian plaster, trickling fountains, French doors and crystal chandeliers suspended beneath glass ceilings—components complemented by lush gardens of pleached elm trees, Japanese boxwood hedges, heritage olive and potted London plane trees. Describing the concept, RH CEO and chairman Gary Friedman has said, “These are architecturally inspiring and immersive experiences that blur the lines between residential and retail, indoors and outdoors, home and hospitality.” rh.com

SHELF LIFE

THE NEW SOUTHERN STYLE: THE INTERIORS OF A LIFESTYLE AND DESIGN MOVEMENT Alyssa Rosenheck is more than a photographer and stylist; she’s also an author, speaker and lifestyle expert of sorts. In her first book, The New Southern Style: The Interiors of a Lifestyle and Design Movement, out September 22, the Nashvillian describes herself as the founder of a design movement; one spearheaded by Southern creatives who use vulnerability and authenticity to help propel social and cultural change. To underscore this concept, Rosenheck ventures inside the private domains of 30 recognizable names—from regional tastemakers (Sean Anderson, Clea Shearer) to former Southerners (Gray Malin, Bobby Berk). Her style of photography perfectly illustrates the invitation she extends in the book’s 320 pages: “to live in the light.” abramsbooks.com 054 / luxesource.com

Complete with 14-foot ceilings, barrel-vaulted passageways and three floors devoted to its Interiors, Modern and Outdoor collections, RH’s newest U.S. design gallery has arrived in Charlotte’s SouthPark neighborhood. Located just feet from the luxury design brand’s former Charlotte legacy store, the 50,000-squarefoot structure is the new anchor tenant of Phillips Place, ushering in a new phase for the shopping complex and enhancing RH’s imprint on the Queen City. True to form, the gallery’s classically arranged rooms display furnishings in a residential-inspired setting filled with light and fresh air, while a double floating staircase leads to a second-floor rug showroom, a samples library and a design atelier boasting an on-site staff of professional

OPEN HOUSE SHOPS + SHOWROOMS

Founded in Homewood, Alabama in 2012, Stock & Trade Design Co. has expanded year over year with Southeast showroom locations in Atlanta, Destin and—as of this spring—Spanish Fort, Alabama, and Brentwood, Tennessee, where shoppers can source cornerstone brands Currey & Company, Bliss Studio, Jaipur and more. Next up: a Santa Rosa Beach, Florida location coming in 2021. stockandtrade.com

After forming her business in High Point, North Carolina, in 2005, designer Lisa Sherry found herself commuting to Charlotte so often, she decided to cement the move with a brick-and-mortar studio. The industrial building, historically home to the Biltmore Estate’s first dairy distribution center, features a garage-style door for open-air workdays. lisasherryinterieurs.com

@carmeon.hamilton WHO: Originally from Arkansas, this Memphis designer began her career in healthcare design before launching Nubi Interiors in 2012. Having consulted with clients in Canada and 30 U.S. states, Carmeon Hamilton experienced a huge uptick in residential requests this year, leading to a promising crop of whole-home projects in Georgia, Texas and California. WHAT: “I’m a modernist for sure,” says Hamilton, whose bohemian aesthetic is reflected in an Instagram feed over 80,000 followers strong—filled with midcentury forms, custom artwork, artisan objects and moody hues, plus houseplants galore. WHY: She loves the good vibes that lush green things bring to a space and is commended as an expert in their care—so much so that in 2019 she published a book, Nubi’s Plant Parenting Guide, still sold as a digital download. IN HER WORDS: “When I worked in wellness, I intuitively understood something that’s still at the forefront of what I design today: A room should look great, but the whole goal is for end users to feel great in their space.”

CURATOR I, like many of my colleagues, believe that curators are agents of social change. My job is to support the work of artists, particularly artists of color, who are engaging in conversations that are meaningful to Birmingham.” –HALLIE RINGLE, Hugh Kaul Curator of Contemporary Art, Birmingham Museum of Art

SustainAble Home Goods, the 3-year-old, ethically sourced design brand founded by LaToya Tucciarone, had operated as a highly successful kiosk in the courtyard of Atlanta’s Ponce City Market since 2019. This month, it moved to a brick-and-mortar store on the mixed-use center’s second floor, where expanded square footage permits fresh additions like furniture, plus displays that invite shoppers to engage with the global makers behind each piece. yoursustainablehome.com World-renowned for its craftsmanship, Christopher Peacock cabinetry will finally bow at the Nashville Design Collective this fall, marking the brand’s 11th luxury boutique. Five exquisitely detailed “rooms” are set to showcase lines like Peacock’s recently updated Lambourne Collection, taking its cues from a parish church in his English hometown. New release Hudson, meanwhile, captures a more modern mood. peacockhome.com

⊳ LAURA DEEMS Laura Deems boasts a background in textile design, so her colorful abstract paintings—beloved by designers Charlotte Lucas, MA Allen and Helen Harbin Davis—tend to take on a tactile quality, embracing the linen or canvas medium as a textural component of her works. The Atlantan’s September release, a series of 12 screen printing screens, represents a new medium for Deems that harks back to her textile days. As with collections past, her latest tributes an iconic artist whose oeuvre has inspired her: in this case, 20th-century color field masters Josef and Anni Albers. lauradeems.com

LIBBY BAXTER ⊲ Based in Greenville, South Carolina, native Georgian Libby Baxter considers “fearless” color choices to be as important as rich textures and juxtaposing patterns. Baxter, who shares a studio with fellow artist Annie Koelle—surrounded by gardens, a greenhouse and an antiques gallery—draws particular inspiration from the famed quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, but is also invested in a more modern movement: maximalism. “I see it as opportunities for boldness, decorative excess, the celebration of individuality,” expresses the fiber artist, who weaves her pieces on floor looms from varied yarns, then sews the fragments together for a patchwork effect. libbybaxter.com

▲ MORGAN WILLIAMSON A Birmingham native, Morgan Williamson established her “modern and functional” ceramics workshop, Handmade Studio TN, in Nashville in 2012. Her hand-formed, heirloomquality stoneware comprises everything from spoon rests and serving bowls to butter domes, vases and place settings. Surfaces left smooth, textured like linen or imprinted with lace are beautifully glazed in versatile hues like rose, moss, gunmetal and two variations of white, occasionally with hand-brushed 22K gold details. “I want to bring thoughtfulness, beauty and intention to everyday moments,” says Williamson. handmadestudiotn.com

⊳ NEW HAT PROJECTS Kelly Diehl and Elizabeth Williams’ Nashville-based design venture was created as a tongue-in-cheek rebuttal to things deemed “old hat.” Their firm envisions wallpaper—and its coordinating objects—in a different way, drawing upon Japanese, Art Deco, Bauhaus and Ancient Egyptian influences to render architectural, high-impact motifs. Williams, a graphic designer, and Diehl, a fine artist, have enjoyed many fruitful collaborations—between themselves as well as with many area creatives. Local printer Grand Palace Silkscreen tackled the bespoke designs that grace the now-iconic Noelle Hotel, while they teamed up with ceramicist Rebecca Blevins to make custom vessels with chain-link details. A collaboration with Chasing Paper releases in September. newhatprojects.com

THE WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN + BATH

Excitement is permeating the kitchen and bath industry—just talk to an expert, and you’ll feel it too. Materials, both new and centuries old, are transcending the ordinary, even the “high-end” rubric; instead, they are interesting, they evoke warmth— they tell a story. The key words are no longer form and function but rather, beauty and technology. Together, these two formerly opposite elements create intimate spaces that are vividly original.

“If you begin at no, you’ll never get to yes.” Words Nancy Epstein has lived and worked by since designing her first piece of furniture more than 20 years ago. “I brought the design to our hometown cabinetmaker and he didn’t like it. I didn’t listen and had him make it anyway, and he was so taken by the results that he asked me to join his company designing products.” Such tenacity eventually led Epstein to found Artistic Tile, where she and her team aim to “make the world a better place … one tile at a time.” Today, her tile empire encompasses eight national showrooms, a cadre of reps working with hundreds of architects, designers and dealers, an engaging website, and 100,000 social media followers. “We are very ‘connected’ to our audience and their preferences, well beyond sales numbers,” she says.

“The gift of the genuine, the real, is the ultimate luxury, so the ultimate kitchen and bath should be outfitted with natural stone.”

MATERIAL MIX: WHAT’S TRENDING IN TILE + Brecciated marble slab. This is an iconic material for Artistic Tile; one Epstein loves so much, she permanently installs it in every new showroom. The color and sense of monumental energy of Breccia Imperiale, Breccia Viola and Arabescato Corchia make them perfect choices for giving visual stature to baths and kitchens. + Glass mosaic. “We love this material in geometric, floral and foliate mosaic designs, in colorful blends, in mirrored mixes and also in tonal white-on-white colorways,” she says. “Lately, we have been creating mosaics with an ombré effect in both kitchens and baths. + Quartzite slabs. The color of these natural stones is breathtaking, and their high resistance to acid etching and low porosity make them especially attractive to those who seek a prep surface that combines real beauty and ease of maintenance.

For over 60 years, Liebherr Appliances has been dedicated to only one thing: the manufacturing of refrigerator and freezer appliances. This commitment has resulted in innovative product solutions that have forever changed the way people function in their kitchen. “In 1993, we became the first manufacturer to convert our entire appliance offering to HCFC/CFC-free refrigerants, in order to protect the environment and ozone layer,” says marketing manager Daniela Maldonado. Liebherr’s refrigerators and freezers stand out for their intuitive operation, energy efficiency and modern design, with features like BioFresh technology that maximize the shelf life of groceries.

FINDING FRIDGE PERFECTION When looking for a refrigerator, make sure to choose one that can provide every solution to your clients’ needs, such as: + O ptimal food preservation for their ingredients and prepared food + Plenty of storage space for entertaining + A beautiful design that seamlessly integrates within their kitchen

PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON SURFACES Porcelain. Kitchens are spaces for dinner, homework, lounging, entertaining and more. Homeowners are moving away from granite and toward porcelain for its resistance to stains, costeffectiveness and durability. Wood. Due to the popularity of open-concept floor plans, flooring choices are extending from space to space, like hardwood in the living area that continues into the kitchen. Oak and walnut are the most popular due to their durability. Stone Slabs. A slab backsplash is clean and adds just the right amount of drama to any kitchen.

HAMMERTON LIGHTING hammerton.com |

The word “signature” resonates with Hammerton Lighting on two fronts. On the product side, its decorative lighting line, Hammerton Signature, speaks to the company’s unlimited customization options. Each light in the collection—whether in design, materials, options or craftsmanship—is a “signature” piece. Stylistically speaking, Hammerton’s “signature” is its relationship with nature as reflected in its designs. “Our aesthetic has always involved an exploration of the natural world,” says founder and vice president of design, Levi Wilson. “Filigree, Art Nouveau and Art Deco are great examples of this.” While the standard industry definition for custom lighting assumes a limited choice of options, in Hammerton’s hands “anything is possible”—a credo that has led the bespoke, entrepreneurial spirit of this American company for a quarter of a century.

EMPLOYEE-CENTRIC SUCCESS The “Made in America” ideology may be different for every American manufacturer, but at Hammerton it’s centered around the transformative power of each of its employees. “Every day at Hammerton, we design, engineer, fabricate, finish, pack, ship and service a unique assortment of products that are entirely different than the day before and the day after,” says president Bill Shott. “Fundamentally, we are tackling new problems and embracing new opportunities every hour of every day. We rely on the personal enterprise of each employee—their creativity, inventiveness, resilience, collaboration and problem-solving skills—to do this successfully. Bottom line, we recognize that Hammerton’s most valuable assets walk in and out of our doors daily.” What is more American than an unshakable belief in the power of the individual?

“Comfort and authenticity are foundational elements of today’s ‘luxury’ value proposition.”

VANGUARD FURNITURE vanguardfurniture.com |

vanguardfurniture

Anyone who has ever tried to sew a straight seam, build a cabinet or finish a piece of furniture knows how difficult it is. It requires not only experience and know-how, but creativity and a collaborative mindset. Enter western North Carolina-based Vanguard Furniture, the custom case goods and upholstery furniture maker, whose skilled artisans have elevated furniture production to a fine art. “From material selection to hand-applied, multi-step finishes, every detail is considered,” president Andy Bray says. Offered with endless customization options, Vanguard’s furniture speaks to the American mindset that home is the ultimate form of self-expression. “Each piece of Vanguard furniture reflects the authenticity of a unique material or design sensibility. And yet, each piece is tailored to the distinctive tastes and experiences of its imaginer,” Bray says.

INGENUITY AT ITS FINEST Over the years, Vanguard has innovated with new technologies to improve service. Operational efficiencies allow us to create one-of-a-kind pieces and have them available for delivery in fewer than four weeks. And our new 3D visualizer applies state-of-the-art technology to visualize custom options and finishes on the fly and to rotate and examine your creation from any angle.

CUSTOMIZATION: THE AMERICAN WAY The American spirit is more independent, and as a result, prizes customization. From a design standpoint, products must be scaled and tailored to American sensibilities; those who desire furniture of distinction because they value their independence and individuality. From the production standpoint, the only way to manifest that goal is to do it locally. American manufacturing—especially the way we do it at Vanguard—builds furniture one piece at a time, so that each can be unique.

“At Vanguard, everything we create involves provenance and customization.”

Gathering GROUNDS THE MODERN-DAY GREAT ROOM IS ALL ABOUT VERSATILITY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

As we take solace in our houses, the kitchen’s role as the heart of the home has become more essential than ever—it’s where we take business calls, help our children with homework, gather for breakfast and evening meals, and enjoy a refreshing cocktail at day’s end. So, it comes as no surprise that blending the kitchen and family room into one great room layout is high on most clients’ wish lists. Today, designers are planning adaptable spaces ideal for prepping meals, breaking bread and intimate socializing, as seen in this stunning project by designer Adam Hunter.

Designer Adam Hunter chose striking custom metal Amuneal cabinetry for this sprawling kitchen, living and dining area in Nashville, Tennessee, which he designed with architect Steve Giannetti. Mattaliano pendant lights from Holly Hunt, Amtrend stools and a fire engine red Lacanche range round out the sophisticated mix. Rocky Mountain Hardware sinks pair with Waterworks faucets.

BIG PICTURE

For designer Adam Hunter, this impressive space started as a dream. “I had a vision of an all-metal kitchen in a beautiful patina with a floating marble hood,” he explains. With the help of all-star architect Steve Giannetti, trusting clients and an ace custom cabinetry company, Hunter was lucky enough to see his fantasy come to life. adamhunterinc.com

Talk to us about the cabinetry. Amuneal created some really luxurious textures and colors with stainless steel designs. We sort of invented a patina we’re calling “root beer.” It works so well with some of the other tones and materials found throughout the space. The glass cases flanking the range continue the view out to the backyard—they’re definitely a favorite feature. How did you decide on the marble hood? We actually had to frame the house so it could support the hood, but I knew we had to go for it! The marble, which my dealers call a pinot noir, has moments of eggplant, burgundy and just the right kind of gold. When it all gleams together at a certain point in the day, it’s magic.

What a room! I wanted to change up my own aesthetic with this project and I certainly reached high. But it really started with doing something unique, which was creating an all-metal kitchen.

Cabinets of CURIOSITY While we may not be able to control everything around us, organized cabinets are essential for a sane state of mind. As we spend more time at home, it seems we can never have enough storage, especially for the hardest-working rooms. Luckily, the latest designs offer both function and innovation as well as aesthetics and good looks. Whether you crave perfect pantry shelving or a sleek wine update, these new styles have you covered.

CLEAN VIEW Pedini’s sophisticated K016 kitchen concept includes this minimal wall unit made of eucalyptus wood with a seamless, paper-thin folding door that completely conceals messy shelves or pantry staples. The steel wine bottle holders also have a small footprint making this feature ideal for urban dwellings or those with cozy floor plans. pediniusa.com

One of several artful, elevated designs is the Fluted door that can be installed in a number of configurations including narrow, medium and wide spacing between the flutes as well as horizontal or vertical orientations. GREAT HEIGHTS

To create a soaring space in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, designer Amber Brown Matlack of Brown Interiors knew she wanted to preserve the charm and history of the original 1935 Tudor-style residence when crafting this great room. After combining what was once a galley kitchen, small breakfast nook and dining room into a central area, she extended the ceiling into the attic to achieve a vaulted effect and expose the wooden beam. The warm color scheme evokes a nostalgic feel, including the mauve and gray tones on the cabinetry and a beautiful stone backsplash. Brown Matlack says she aimed for “a sense of openness and livability in the heartbeat of the house.” browninteriors.net

To celebrate the agrarian history of a family’s Bridgehampton property, Historical Concepts and Michael Davis Design & Construction envisioned a structure reminiscent of traditional potato barns in the area. Cedar board-and-batten cladding and masonry details, including Connecticut fieldstone retaining walls and natural bluestone cleft slabs designed in tandem with Hollander Design Landscape Architects, speak to the old-meets-new ethos.

TAKE COMFORT Take care. Stay safe. Be well. Who could have guessed the weight these phrases would take on in this uncharted new decade? Times of introspective nesting have illuminated that such directives start at home, reinvigorating a discussion on the many ways design can enhance our mental and physical wellbeing. Here, we share an assortment of restorative spaces whose principles—thoughtful details, indulgent amenities and ample conversation with nature— provide ideas for sanctuaries large and small.

Knowing that the indoor pool would be used through the colder months, the team nestled the feature in the ground, adding a south-facing skylight. “Between the warmth of the rammed earth and the natural light, it’s a perfect winter pool,” says Historical Concepts principal Kevin Clark. “It doesn’t feel like a cold conservatory.”

Sweet 1ESCAPE A BRIDGEHAMPTON SPORTS BARN OFFERS THE ULTIMATE FAMILY RETREAT.

“With a remote property, you have the opportunity to create a destination,” says Kevin Clark, principal of Historical Concepts. And so it came to be that a family’s brief for a recreational outbuilding on their Bridgehampton estate evolved into a sports barn laden with wellness features. Surrounded by acres of pristine farmland, the structure demanded a sensitive approach, one that Historical Concepts—an architecture firm known for legacy properties rooted in place— was well-suited for. Alongside interior designer Steven Gambrel, landscape architect Edmund Hollander and master builder Michael Davis, who assembled the team, plans were drawn for a lowslung, cedar-clad activity center softly folded into the rolling terrain. The decision to nestle the barn into, not onto, the landscape is an exercise in both historical accuracy and ingenuity. First, it references semisubterranean potato barns local to the region. Second, it meets a Hamptons building code limiting accessory structures to 20 feet high, while still allowing for a three-story structure for all the family’s amenity wishes to live in harmony. In full, the sprawling retreat includes family offices, a large vaulted great room, a kitchen, an indoor lap pool and spa, men’s and women’s locker rooms and an exercise room—plus a sunken tennis court with viewing pavilion. “The lay of the land and the feel of a place reveal themselves when you put pen to paper,” says Clark. “The top floor gym has a wonderful

LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 139

view over the property, and the sauna, steam and massage rooms round out the indoor activities,” shares Davis. “In addition to the gathering room, there is a suite of three family offices particularly helpful during these times.” Throughout, Gambrel’s interiors scheme—a medley of warm woods and chalky blue, green and sand hues—sets a restorative tone. “The palette is muted, based on the environment as inspiration,” he explains, and indeed, the natural setting inspires. Complementing the agrarian landscape, Hollander took care in employing native plantings, such as bayberry, winterberry and viburnum, to welcome birds, bees and other pollinators. “Healthy, living landscapes are essential to the wellness of all visitors, all species,” he notes. Like many affluent New Yorkers, the family decamped to their country residence in the early days of the pandemic. In turn, the beloved barn has become a haven beyond anything client or design team could have planned for—a hub of safety, togetherness and health. “One of the most rewarding parts of our job is when you see a place you designed be truly life-altering for a family,” says Clark, adding, “When you treat home as resort, there’s something magical about that.”

GOODVIBES THREE DESIGNERS SHARE A PRINCIPLE THAT SHAPES THEIR PERSONAL PRACTICE.

LAURENCE CARR

New York, New York Wabi-sabi is a worldview rooted in Japanese origin all about taming desire for perfection in design, freeing us to live more sustainably and impart truly authentic style in our homes. To seek it is to honor the patina and character of our interiors and collected pieces, find harmony with nature, honor simplicity and do away with excess clutter. I help clients seek wabi-sabi through utilization of the seven Zen principles— one of which, for example, is incorporating unique pieces from our clients’ own collections. This practice shifts focus from trendy items to those that have been built lovingly, and with noble materials. Together with our clients, we identify character-rich pieces and intentionally place them in different rooms as the sturdy roots of our interior design approach. laurencecarr.com

MACELLE ALBEDA

Pasadena, California Biophilia stems from Greek as “love of life” and is about our innate human need to be connected to nature. Biophilic design focuses on how to layer nature into interiors, whether through actual elements like

LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 140

plants, stone, wood, water and natural light, or “biomimicry,” which are shapes and patterns that remind us of being outdoors. The benefits are substantial: Close proximity to nature triggers a dopamine response in our brains that promotes well-being, lowering blood pressure and stress. Starting from the most basic ways to inspire biophilia, you can paint walls in colors we find in nature, like green, blue and brown. Then move on to adding motifs and plants. Advanced options include stone walls, water features and changing the building’s access to natural light. studiomahal.com

NINA MAGON

Houston, Texas One way of fostering well-being at home that I believe in and have used with great results is Vastu Shastra, an Indian system of architecture similar to feng shui. In Vastu Shastra, there are 5 elements: Earth (Bhumi), Water (Jala), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), and Space (Akasha). The central part of a house is ruled by the space element. As all directions meet in the center, it is the holiest and most powerful zone. So when possible, I like to ensure that the most-used room—often the living area—is located in the direct center and designed with a minimal aesthetic for less clutter and low furniture to allow for plenty of natural light. This approach harmonizes the flow of energy throughout the home, which facilitates good health. contourinteriordesign.com

LOST in REVERIE

There are serene rooms and then there are rooms where serenity seems to emanate from the walls, softening your disposition on viewing. This elixir of a bedroom in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—a collaboration between WRJ Design and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson—is decidedly the latter. Here, designer Rush Jenkins and architect Ray Calabro sound off on achieving Zen in tandem. wrjdesign.com; bcj.com Set the scene. RC: The site for the house is on a butte that overlooks the Snake River Valley with extraordinary views. The bedroom is located at the southern, most private end of the home and is embedded into the gentle slope of the site, connecting with the landscape at a more immediate scale. RJ: There’s a calmness and a majestic beauty that surrounds you. That’s what the color palette, the lighting, the simplicity of the design were about—creating harmony with nature. Material connection. RC: The southern wall is smooth-formed cast-in-place concrete, the flooring is white oak with a custom finish, the window wall is aluminum with a clear anodized finish, and the ceiling is composed of panels of white oak. RJ: The rug is bamboo silk, the bed is really luxurious suede, the pillows are a cashmere plaid from Loro Piana. Those tonal elements are about continuity with the exteriors and the architecture. Design highlights. RC: The water feature that stretches along the master suite is dynamic. We placed mirror-finish stainless steel panels on the roof overhang above the stream. The combination of gently moving water and mirror reflects constantly changing patterns of light into the master suite throughout the day. The effect is magical. RJ: The seamless windows in this room actually open from the bottom. Can you imagine waking up hearing the water rippling and the birds chirping in the garden? Sometimes, you’ll see a moose having a drink. You don’t get closer to nature than that. Dream team. RC: WRJ’s selections reinforce the quiet elegance of the home. The luxe finishes and fabrics express their commitment to quality and attention to detail that are guiding principles in the architecture. RJ: This house was a unified vision. The client wanted peace and simplicity, and every team member came at this design from the same philosophy.

Home WORK

Some decamped to dining tables. Others converted spare rooms to studies. In the immediate wake of the pandemic, remote work culture shifted inexorably, and with it, the landscape of home office design. With more and more companies adopting permanently flexible policies, it’s no surprise that designers are seeing an uptick in office updates. On deck? Spaces that foster productivity and focus, certainly—but also tranquility and moodboosting chic. Take a cue from these calming desks around the country.

▲ FRESH PERSPECTIVE In Vero Beach, Florida, designer Kevin Dumais’ unconventional furniture configuration is twofold. First, it makes way for foot traffic between the room’s two entrances. Second, it sets the client up to take advantage of the resplendent views and shifting sunlight throughout the day. dumaisid.com

BETTER TOGETHER With restorative garden views for the taking, designer Bryan Yates aligned a Dallas, Texas, couple’s work areas along a single window wall. The decision has a reverse fishbowl effect: The elegantly minimal design can be conversely enjoyed from the outdoor entertaining spots. yatesdesygn.com

AS TOLD TO GRACE BEULEY HUNT

From the very beginning, it was meant to be a place of rest. The architect picked the location for it’s amazing natural light and we worked with a feng shui master. Building started in September to encourage good luck and prosperity for the home. It was a special brief in that way—there was meaning behind every detail. We’re seeing more and more clients asking for specialty rooms, but these clients—two firstgeneration Chinese sisters—really use this space. After a hard day’s work, they retreat to drink tea together, practice calligraphy and meditate. They wanted to honor their heritage—but to modernize, too. Tea room window treatments are traditionally bamboo; we chose a light grass Conrad shade. The Chilewich rug is textured like a tatami mat and the white-oak furnishings are custom by Chi Wing Lo, a Chinese furniture designer living in Italy. The table has natural stone for water draining and a metal plate for the hot teapot to rest on. In spring, the sisters drink Longjing tea. In summer, jasmine tea paired with red bean pastry. In autumn, black tea with moon cake and in winter, Pu’er tea. They have an incredible collection of ceramic vessels; their most-prized is a Gongfu tea set from Yingge, a town famous for its production of porcelain. It was an inspiring project in that we learned so much from our clients. It also showed us how important it is to have a room dedicated to feeling good in—to feeling happy. We’re now looking to incorporate this principal into more of our designs. sullivandesignstudio.com

SOUS VIDE FOR THE SENSES

EXPLORE THE METHOD BEHIND CHEF-MADE MAGIC

Imagine the smell of a cut of steak that has retained its seasonings like never before; the taste and texture of each slice you bite into, its juices and flavor just as you prefer. A feast for the senses, if ever there was one. This could be your dinner, every evening. Allow us to introduce you to sous vide … the term is French for “under vacuum” and the technique is revolutionary. Vacuum seal your food—spices, marinades and all—and submerge it to cook in water. You can regulate the temperature to within a single degree and the heat will be evenly distributed from start to finish. The result, whether steak or fish, an egg or vegetables, redefines “perfectly cooked.” It used to be that maintaining the condition of the water demanded complexity, with equipment and processes that weren’t suited to the home. But no more. Thanks to Signature Kitchen Suite, this method is now yours to experience on the daily. Bathe your steak to its best quality ever, and then give it a little charring on the cooktop— all using one, first-of-its-kind range. Everything you need is right on your cooktop, with no extra tools or equipment required.

TO PROTECT AND SERVE DO YOUR WINE THE HONOR OF CAREFUL KEEPING

From growing, harvesting and crushing the grapes to aging and bottling the resulting libation, so much effort and attention is devoted to the careful art of winemaking. The same level of thoughtfulness should be given to its next phase, no? Signature Kitchen Suite thinks the answer is certainly yes, and that’s why they collaborated with the world’s most knowledgeable vintners, historians and scientists to develop wine refrigerators qualified for their occupants.

wine: temperature fluctuations, vibration, light and reduced humidity. Independent temperature zones enable one to organize red, white and sparkling varieties according to their needs; an inverted linear compressor and a metal interior minimize vibration to less than 2 gal (cm/s2); dark-tinted, triple-paned glass protects from UV; and evaporators maintain steady humidity levels. GUIDE TO THE GRAZING BOARD

Ah, the grazing board. It can be an after-school snack plate, elegant party hors d’oeuvre or individual meal. Delicious and aesthetically pleasing, this display of abundance is perfect for foodies of any age and in every setting. It’s a culinary staple. Given the nature of its ingredients, a grazing board demands a lot from one’s refrigerator. Meats should be quite a bit chillier than fruits and veggies, for example, and most of it can’t sit out for too long once you’ve put your spread together. Signature Kitchen Suite’s 24-inch and 30-inch Integrated Column Refrigerators prove the ultimate partner. Their Lift and Go™ bins and drawers offer a variety of places to customize storage conditions to the needs of specific foods, while a movable snack drawer is expansive enough to house extra-large serving platters. Let’s go to the market.

DIPS honey, jellies, Dijon mustard, peanut butter, hummus

STEP 05

Find your canvas. We think wood boards make for beautiful backgrounds, but any traylike surface will do.

Decide on your must-haves. What are your favorite cheeses? Are you obsessed with olives? Or is red pepper jelly your jam (pun intended)?

Start pairing. Choose more foods with your first picks in mind and be intuitive about it. Just because something isn’t a conventional match, doesn’t mean you can’t include it. Trust your gut, as they say.

Slice, dice + roll! Get creative with presentation; think brie triangles and cheddar chunks, pepperoni chips and rolled prosciutto.

Top it off with extra flavor. Nestle dipping bowls into spaces around the board and fill them with yummy condiments (this can also be a great place for items that give off liquid you want to contain, like olives and pickles).

“In the family room, the goal was to seamlessly blend with the outdoors, and Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe paint makes the connection,” explains designer Parrish Cameron Robe Chilcoat, who strategically placed the CFC dining table and Noir chairs for enjoying Memphis mornings. Lamps by Kelly Wearstler for Visual Comfort & Co. flank the Harbinger sofa and the custom ottoman wears Pindler faux leather. A Tree of Life triptych by Natural Curiosities contributes whimsy.

I

t’s true that the most successful design projects often stem from a sense of familiarity and alignment of tastes, but when the designer happens to be actual family, the results tend to be even more in sync. Such was the case for a special Memphis manse updated by designer Parrish Cameron Robe Chilcoat. Selected for her upbeat West Coast style, Chilcoat came to the project with the added advantage of being the wife’s cousin. “As girls we lived near each other in Florida and spent holidays together,” Chilcoat shares. “And as women we discovered a mutual interest in interior design.” Owners Allison and Richard Smith had previously tapped Chilcoat’s talents for their former Memphis abode, and although Allison had once considered it their forever home, fate had other plans. The opportunity for Richard to walk through a residence designed by renowned Mississippi architect Lewis Graeber III changed everything. Upon spying the three-story spiral staircase, barrel-vaulted ceilings and intricate millwork, “I just had to have it,” a besotted Richard recalls. Happily settled at their existing residence, his wife, however, was not similarly inclined to relocate. When she finally acquiesced, it was with one caveat: that their new home’s interiors closely resemble their previous one, complete with her cousin’s signature use of color. Thankfully, Chilcoat was able to return to Memphis for the task.

Dubbed the “relaxation zone,” the sun room is where homeowner Allison Smith regularly cocoons, with the screened space allowing for bug-free enjoyment of the outdoors (a worthy concern in the South). With the exception of the slatted Janus et Cie coffee table, all furnishings in the space were repurposed from the family’s previous residence.

8/12/20 9:53 AM

The plan was to reuse as much as possible. “Most of their existing furnishings were custom and some just needed to be reupholstered,” says Chilcoat, who focused on composing multifunctional spaces to suit the scale of the much larger residence. “The great room, wine cellar and library sold me on the house,” reveals Richard, who serves as regional president of the Americas for FedEx Express and, as one of 10 siblings, wanted a welcoming atmosphere for him, Allison and their two children, as well as legions of nieces and nephews, to hang out. But the usefulness of those areas for business meetings only added to the home’s appeal. In Richard’s library, for example, Chilcoat kept the existing stained woodwork, complementing it with navy walls and wool draperies reminiscent of men’s suiting; the results feel fresh, yet appropriate for the room’s

LX_SE09_HOM_Chilcoat_10.indd 161

traditional bones and professional purpose. “We wanted furniture to look young and contemporary with more clean lines, but still classic,” explains the designer who, in contrast, fashioned the family room as a more private refuge. “The deep gray walls and dark stained ceiling bring out the trees. I wanted it to feel cozy and inviting for evening, but also quiet and restful during the day.” Offsetting the grandeur of the architecture, “relaxed, fun elements gave the decorating excitement,” Chilcoat adds. “It’s a livable approach, not too overthought or too perfect.” It was in that spirit that the curving staircase, once creamcolored, received a wash of blue-green paint. “I thought it would be so impactful to highlight its curvature,” the designer explains. “It’s almost like a fabric that’s threaded three stories tall.”

With “fresh” being the operative word, the home’s kitchen cabinets were lightened using Pratt & Lambert’s Windham paint. A backsplash of shimmery Ann Sacks tiles provides a bohemian accent. A trio of Noir counter stools wears Architex’s Reptile textile while Kelly Wearstler’s Precision pendants for Visual Comfort & Co. hang above.

Left: “We wanted to accentuate the incredible lines and workmanship of the existing staircase,” says Chilcoat, who retained its original lanternand-rope fixture but refreshed its formerly cream-colored baseboards and risers with Benjamin Moore’s Amazon Green. The dynamic shade has the effect of drawing one’s eye to the circular formation of the spiral, which reads like a work of sculpture. Opposite: A Currey & Company chandelier composed of round glass discs suspends from the dining room’s freshly painted white ceiling, adding to its debonair appearance. “It is an amazing backdrop for dinner parties,” shares the designer, who corralled vintage-style French chairs by RH around a Keith Fritz dining table from Jasper in Los Angeles. The rug is by Merida.

8/12/20 9:53 AM

While every effort was made to maintain Graeber’s foundational architecture, painting the original dark brown vaulted ceiling in the dining room a brighter white had the effect of lightening the overall ambience while allowing the room’s existing wall mural to pop. Similarly, in a sitting room off the master suite, a fresh coat of lavender paint gave a wall of built-ins new life. “Parrish pushed it, and she was right,” Allison says of the whimsical interjection. As for Richard: “I work for FedEx, so she didn’t have to sell me on the purple,” he jokes of his company’s logo. Due to the impressive architecture, few interior revisions felt necessary and were mostly down to refinements, which the designer relied upon general contractor Reid Hedgepeth to problem solve throughout. “He worked seamlessly with our firm,” she notes. For example, “When the master bathroom tiles arrived broken and the installation became very labor-intensive, he just figured it out.”

The home’s preexisting grace continued well into the landscape, where the established property had been meticulously maintained. Landscape architect Marley Fields saw her job chiefly as one of enhancement: “We edited existing plantings to better complement the family’s activity,” she says. “For example, the pool area was walled by a tall holly hedge, and to open views to the pool from the house and connect the expansive lower lawn, we removed the hedge for more visibility and connection to adjacent gardens.” Today, Allison’s early misgivings are a thing of the past, and the Smiths believe their new home responds directly to the way they live. “It was very important to both of us that the house didn’t feel like a museum,” Richard expresses. “We are light-hearted people; the house definitely reflects who we are.”

“The style and tone of the garden was already set, so we expanded upon that with timeless and classic plants that provide seasonal interest,” explains landscape architect Marley Fields. “Hydrangeas surrounding the pool garden, for example, are beautiful throughout the summer swim months.”

In the living room of this Wehapa Lake, Alabama home, ample windows lend a sun room-like feel. “The cool, California vibe works well with Jeff Dungan’s architecture,” says designer Tyler Papp, who boldly painted the room’s ceiling and walls a custom shade of black. All seating is by Lee Industries, sourced from UpCountry Home in Atlanta. The leaning plaster piece is by Dallas-area artist Scott Kerr.

S

ophistication and worldliness are words not often synonymous with lake houses, but when the homeowners are as well-traveled as these and their architect is known for inspired designs that take their cues from nature, the results are just that. Situated alongside Wehapa Lake, the centerpiece of a private community located a half hour’s drive east of Birmingham, is the primary home of two empty-nesters passionate about the outdoors—fishing in particular. After finding the perfect wooded plot, deciding who would design their home came easily. Enter Jeffrey Dungan, an architect whose work they’d long admired. The couple gave Dungan only one directive: to design a house that would be architecturally engaged with its surroundings. Then they left him to his own devices. This liberty allowed Dungan’s creativity to take flight, paving the way for a freewheeling abode that captures the spirit of the land as much as its owners. “The clients are outdoorsy people, so connecting the home visually and physically to the outdoors was really important,” Dungan explains. Given the peninsula-like building site, the architect chose to capitalize on the watery surroundings by positioning the residence as close to water’s edge as possible. Says Dungan: “The nose of the house is right up against the lake, like someone with their nose to the glass looking out.” Spreading the structure out along Wehapa’s placid shoreline, the architect planned a home with lake views from every room, effectively maximizing natural light.

LX_SE09_HOM_Dungan_12.indd 169

8/12/20 9:46 AM

An extension of the kitchen, the keeping room offers a relaxing alternative to hanging out at the kitchen island thanks to a Lee Industries leather swivel chair, Mr. Brown London coffee table and vintage Turkish rug from Smyrna Trading Company in Atlanta. To highlight Dungan’s architecture for the space—including its hand-shaped, staggered fireplace—Papp worked with a neutral color palette exclusively. Another Scott Kerr work hangs above.

Because the homeowners spend so much time outdoors, Dungan devoted considerable square footage to outdoor living and dining—evidenced by this intimate corner with a built-in limestone banquette. Both the teak table and scoop chairs are from Texture in High Point, North Carolina. The hand-carved Costa Rican bowl is one of many pieces the homeowner and her daughter purchased abroad.

LX_SE09_HOM_Dungan_12.indd 171

8/12/20 9:46 AM

The porch’s copper screening acts as a sepialike filter for the lakeside views, which can be enjoyed from the comfort of bentwood chairs from Texture. Dungan and landscape designer Gary Mitchell collaborated on the grounds, opting to preserve numerous native trees while choosing plants, such as hydrangea and boxwood, to harmonize with the wooded surroundings.

Surrounding the building are simplified grounds reflecting a collaboration between Dungan and landscape designer Gary Mitchell, knitting the residence to its setting with regional favorites such as hydrangea, tea olive and Japanese maple. Says Dungan: “We accentuated the lines of the house with boxwoods for structure, then let the landscape make a quick transition back to nature.” Architectural materials were selected in solidarity with the rustic setting, but Dungan elected to enhance their natural beauty in modern ways. Breaking down the barrier between indoors and out, expansive steel-framed windows serve as a defining gesture, introducing transparency and lightness to the architecture. Creamy Texas limestone, treated to a variety of smooth and textured finishes, complements charcoalstained cypress for a simple yet striking combination. “There is nothing more powerful than black-and-white contrast,” Dungan enthuses. “It’s classic and a crowd pleaser.” The same materials were repeated indoors, though with greater refinement. “The interior relates to the story you see on the outside, but it changes gears to become more sophisticated and polished,” Dungan explains. Indoors, expanses of stone and glass are joined by lightly treated—or, in the case of the living room, boldly painted—wood floors and ceilings, while plaster was hand-worked to form pointed archways and gently sloped openings between rooms. Aiding the success of such delicate details was a father-andson duo of general contractors: Don Dickinson and Mitch Dickinson. Dungan heaps praise on the pair, having worked with the elder Dickinson for decades. “Their handiwork is so clear in the detailing of this home that it would be impossible to conceive of its success without them being involved in it,” the architect notes.

To keep the kitchen visually connected to the outdoors, Dungan opted for windows rather than upper cabinets, designating the adjacent pantry for storage. Lime-washed cabinetry by Deal’s Cabinetry & Fine Woodworking complements Calacatta Borghini marble countertops, Rejuvenation’s Haleigh pendants and Bobby McAlpine-designed counter stools for Lee Industries. The breakfast area’s graduated opening strikes a light-hearted note.

Spearheaded by the homeowners’ daughter, Atlanta designer Tyler Papp—in concert with her mother—the home’s finishing touches were years in the making, having been collected over the course of extensive global travels. “They wanted the home to feel like it had been traveling with them,” says Papp, who co-sourced Guatemalan textiles and French pottery for the house even before it had been built. Now installed in softly shaded corners and gracing tactile tabletops, the treasures foster an eclectic and worldly atmosphere. Carefree upholstery pieces in durable fabrics are another point of appreciation for the owners, especially after a day spent fishing on the lake. “My parents wanted their home to be comfortable and livable,” Papp explains. “At the end of the day, we wanted it to feel like a lake house.” All told, the home is a consummate expression of its owners, but also of Dungan, who considers the lakeside setting its greatest asset. “Instead of it being all about the architecture, I wanted it to be about what the architecture could reveal and avail to you,” says Dungan. “And that has a lot more to do with nature than it does with what a man can come up with in his head.”

LX_SE09_HOM_Dungan_12.indd 175

8/12/20 9:46 AM

To boost coziness in the soaring master bedroom, Papp introduced Stark Studio’s Shalimar Collection silk carpet for softness. Since the room lacks wall space, the designer selected low-profile furniture that would not block windows—including Bernhardt’s fluted Domaine Blanc desk used as a vanity and the same brand’s Haley armless chair upholstered in aubergine velvet. The armchairs are by Century. The bedside lamp is by Visual Comfort & Co.

Yours, Mine & Ours NASHVILLIAN CLIENTS UPDATE THEIR LONGTIME FAMILY HOME, CREATING SPACES UNIQUE TO THEM BOTH. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEE MITCHELL

C

all it an opportunity born of disaster. Damage from a felled tree was what convinced one Nashville couple to reevaluate their longbeloved home, located in a shady enclave of Belle Meade. The near-century-old abode had fit them well in younger years, but with their children grown and eyes on their future together, the pair saw a moment worth seizing. As repairs gave rise to renovations, leading to modern architectural updates that support aging in place, the home’s interiors came to inspire a greater focus on wellness, with rooms designed for family gatherings, plus spaces where the husband and wife each can retreat and recharge. “The homeowners have uniquely different tastes,” notes their designer, Robin Rains. “He prefers uncluttered contemporary; she’s drawn to tradition and opulence. What they shared was the desire to embrace contrast and explore common ground.” The husband and wife—both business owners active in the nonprofit community—turned to architect Kem Hinton, whom they already knew through a previous commission and civic projects around Nashville, to head up the home’s renovation. “The challenge was to give the owners options while keeping the home’s wonderful historic ambience,” explains Hinton, who worked with project manager Steve Johnson and project designer Katie Woods to add an elevator, redesign the kitchen and bathrooms with more forgiving footprints, create enclosed porches and convert a guesthouse into the husband’s office.

LX_SE09_HOM_Rains2_10.indd 179

8/12/20 9:40 AM

To connect the rear volumes to the main house, Hinton devised a clever addition: to one side is a glazed corridor overlooking the courtyard and, to the other, a contemporary guest suite that may one day transition to a ground-floor master suite. “It’s accessible design without compromising character; the addition honors the scale and materials of the house,” says the architect, who followed the home’s original roof forms but added steel windows for transparency. For efficiency’s sake, Hinton and builder Salem Forsythe excavated the couple’s adjacent land for new geothermal systems, providing landscape architect Chris Barkley and landscape designer Hannah Goodgion the chance to enhance the entire property.

LX_SE09_HOM_Rains2_10.indd 180

While the husband’s clean-lined preferences are more evident along the architectural envelope, the wife’s tastes and interests are better revealed within it. “I’ve never met anyone so passionate about all things beautiful,” Rains says of her client. “Flea market finds, fine antiques, all of it; she loves to tell stories of how she found each piece.” A collection this vast required careful analysis to determine display and storage needs. There are silver pieces, ceramics (“She has an enormous collection of Chinese, European and even dime-store blue-and-white porcelain,” Rains adds), boxes in numerous luxe materials, mirrors, photographs, etchings and sketches sourced from Wyoming, where the couple has a home. There are paintings, too, including several by local artist Kit Reuther.

In the entryway of this Nashville home, a pale blue ceiling visually heightens the space. Designer Robin Rains deftly anchored the area with an antique French chest, gilt Italian mirror and Sheraton chairs with chartreuse seats sourced from the Franklin Antique Mall. This room’s artworks, as those throughout the house, were hung by Alexander Brindley Fine Art.

8/12/20 9:40 AM

Rains chose to replicate the living room’s former mirrored walls, creating a chic backdrop for an expressive Kit Reuther work. The Stewart Furniture sofa supports pillows in sumptuous Fortuny textiles and is joined by a forged-iron-and-glass cocktail table Rains had custom made. The Louis XV stools and Regency side table are from Spalding Way.

The dining room is defined by its scenic wallcovering, Arcadia by Schumacher, with vistas inspired by the paintings of French Baroque artist Nicolas Poussin. Here, Rains paired a 19th-century Italian table with a set of Louis XV-style cane chairs upholstered in a Schumacher damask. The large gothic mirror was found at Made in France and the carved-wood pedestals came from Canterbury Cottage Antiques.

A vibrant pair of Louis XVI armchairs from The Belle Meade Shoppes, where Rains also sourced the vintage sofa, sounds an uplifting note in the meditation room. A classic tripod table, or gueridon, sits between them. Scalamandré’s iconic tiger print and a florid Fortuny velvet grace throw pillows. The framed painting is by Paul Harmon.

To link elements together visually, Rains kept walls white and floors neutral, employing burnished gold tones as a continuous thread throughout. “We chose neutral fabrics for larger pieces in the living room, as we knew we’d be layering Fortuny fabrics with various color tones, but we kept some antiques in their original fabrics,” explains the designer, who worked with Hinton to adjust architectural details as needed. For example, the living room’s mantle was removed for a pared-down look, while wainscoting was added for interest. Rains also selected mirrored paneling similar to that present in the room’s previous iteration because “it brought depth and enthusiasm to the space,” with the added effect of amplifying the opposing dining room’s dramatic new wallcovering. “The wife says it reminded her of their home in Italy,” notes the designer, who purposely eschewed a rug and chandelier so as not to distract from the Arcadian scene. Liaising with team members Kate Ladd Chlebowski, Jenna Miller and Haley Davis, Rains continued in the same decorative vein, painting a pale blue-and-white checkerboard pattern on the kitchen floor, papering the master bedroom in an exotic animal print and coating the library in a rich dark green. “I think we’ve forgotten that a house needs a library, Rains posits. “It reminds us to embrace the joy of unwinding with a good read.” The wife’s personal meditation room, for that matter, is her sanctuary. “It’s where she reflects, prays, reads and recharges,” Rains says. “This room is about nourishing the soul. We all need spaces like these right now.” Antique Himalayan singing bowls, bird feathers and photos of her grandchildren are just a few items that help center her. “The home exudes this couple’s life story,” Rains concludes. “They respect each other’s tastes and embraced the challenge of blending them. I was given the ability to layer, not match, with no rules. There was something very freeing about that.”

Left: Rains infused warmth into the master bathroom with a Oushak rug and Louis XVI chair from the Franklin Antique Mall. Honed Calacatta marble herringbone floors and wall tiles from Proctor Marble & Granite highlight the space’s improved sense of expansiveness. The brass Water Street hardware and California Faucets fittings are from Kenny & Company. Opposite: The master bedroom is bedecked in Pierre Frey’s exotic Jardin de Mysore wallpaper—a pattern that plays to bed linens by John Robshaw and Matouk, topped with yet another Fortuny pillow. The painted nightstand is from G&G Interiors, joined by a country French vintage bench with a rush top. The sisal rug is by Fibreworks.
