ON THE COVER: In a Presidio Heights abode, a Kehinde Wiley painting pulls the eye through the entrance hall, past the angular Curtis JerĂŠ brass pendant, and into the library, where the artwork glows like a jewel in custom walnut woodwork. These are just a few of the storied pieces designer Eche Martinez incorporated in the interior of this 1926 home that previously had undergone a character-stripping remodel. Page 220

EDITOR’S LETTER

ZOOM LAND!

Back in June, I was moderating a Zoom meeting when my husband popped into my office to announce that we had a buyer for our house. “We need to look at this new place, pronto!” Lickety-split, we were moving out of the home we have lived in for nearly a decade and into a fab new rental further east and across from the beach. With all this taking place in the midst of Covid, my head was swirling. Like so many, our home has become a safe haven; nearly every hour of every day spent under that roof. As I write this note, it’s day three in our new place and I’m back to Zooming away. Yes, I had that moment of, “Yikes, what have we done?” But, more than ever, I am grateful to have a new home to settle into. I hope that this September/October issue brings you inspiration for your own home and a respite from what’s happening in the world.

ow more than ever, we’re contemplating what comforts bring joy to a home. To that end, designers are all about elements that create tranquility and contentment in private spaces, and found that it’s the simple things—cozy outdoor areas, the feel of soft linens and the play of light on a wall—that truly create happiness. For Brooke and Steve Giannetti, a designer and architect, pleasure can be found in the fresh air. “Connections to the garden are at the heart and soul of what we do,” says Steve. The husband-andwife team lives on a farm in Southern California where they’ve perfected the art of indoor-outdoor living. Their secret lies in making the great outdoors more intimate. “The feeling of being in an open meadow is sometimes not the most relaxing,” explains Steve. “We found that if you can break an alfresco space into loosely defined rooms—using features like a wall, a garden border or a tree—it makes a space feel more inviting and protected.” Their farm is full of examples, such as a seating arrangement placed under the canopy of a heritage oak, a fire pit ringed by a sectional or a table located by a vegetable garden. “Being outside is something we crave all year round,” Brooke says. “Living in nature calms us and brings us into the moment. It is perhaps the best luxury.” In Atlanta, designer Erika Hollinshead Ward finds luxury where the day begins and ends. “Having a bed that’s made with good linens is a treat,” she says. “You may not be able to control what happens in the world, but sleeping with beautiful linens is a joy.” Ward favors bamboo sheets for their sustainability and hand, noting the fabric becomes even softer with washing, and for curtains, she turns to cotton linen. “The weave of a crisp linen makes a great canvas for color and pattern,” she says. “To me, drapery is like art on the wall—and it can elevate and finish a space the same way a good blazer makes an outfit.” Brad Ford, a New York City designer, calls natural light “very healing” and seeks to add as much of it as possible to any dwelling, be it a city apartment or a house in the country. “In a dense metropolis, privacy can be an issue, so we like to add solar shades or sheers on windows,” he says. “These allow you privacy but also an amount of light.” Ford is also known for strategically placing mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces in a room to amplify the light. When designing a new home, he always advocates for as many windows as possible. “I would live in a glass house if I could,” he says. “I believe there is no better mood enhancer than natural light.” For these design professionals, providing easy indulgences is rewarding. “Many of my clients come home exhausted after a long day,” Ward says. “If I can give them a space that’s tailored to them, and that provides comfort, I am also fulfilled.”

TONE FOR COLOR GURU EVE ASHCRAFT, SUCCESSFUL SCHEMES BOIL DOWN TO INSTINCT. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

Eve Ashcraft knows a good palette. A formally trained painter, she earned her stripes as a color specialist for Martha Stewart and today touts an elite moniker—architectural color consultant— lending her expertise to residential homes, cultural institutions, public works projects and corporate branding the world over. Luxe called upon Ashcraft to learn more of her vibrant and innate approach. eveashcraft.com Formative influence. My mother was a painter. We had a yellow living room with fuchsia silk pillows. I would come home from school and she’d say, ‘Grab a brush’—she’d be painting the kitchen cabinets, again. It never occurred to me until I started working with clients that anyone would be afraid of color. Less is best. Fan decks are an instrument of torture. I’ve had clients test 30 colors before calling me. They were probably feeling insecure to begin with, and there’s this internet problem of, ‘I’ll just scroll to the next page and oops, it’s 4 a.m.’ Endless choice can have a negative effect, so I edit and distill my ideas before sharing.

Go-to paint trick. When I want a space to feel calm, one easy tip is to reduce contrast, especially between building components, like the trim, walls and ceiling. Make those elements the same or almost the same color and boundaries will disappear, creating a sense of spaciousness. Golden rule. The more color you have, the more color you can use. It’s like a great party—just jam everyone in there.

LX_COM33_Radar_5MinutesWith.indd 62

“I love using the resources and collections I keep in my studio to build these inspiration boards, either for my own edification or to show clients possibilities,” says Eve Ashcraft of her fantasy color palette.

photo: eve ashcraft.

Artist’s intuition. The only thing I love about getting older is that I’ve developed respect for my instincts. There are moments when I walk into a room and just know. I had clients with this tasteful blue parlor, but there was something sad about it. I said, ‘You’re going to kill me, but this room should be tobacco with cream trim.’ Six months later, I received a love letter about how they never leave it now. That kind of transformation is luxury.

Open DIALOGUE

THREE ARTISANS REFLECT ON THE CREATIVE JOURNEY AND FINDING COMFORT IN THEIR WORK. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY

RAYMOND BARBEROUSSE Studio PGRB, Miami

Raymond Barberousse’s path from architect to lighting designer is a telling reminder that good things can result from trying times. Shortly after buying a house in 2009, he was laid off from a Chicago architecture firm, leaving him to D.I.Y. much of his home’s furnishings. His sculptural lighting designs caught the eye of an owner of a local decor store, and the rest is history. Today, Barberousse and his wife split their time between Chicago and Miami drawing inspiration from both locales. “Chicago is energetic; Miami is more laid-back,” says the designer. As a member of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, he is an advocate for promoting inclusivity in the design community, but ultimately, he says, “It’s about the work. I want the work to represent itself.”

DENISE MCKENZIE-LEE

Enkee Ceramics, Chicago

“Don’t underestimate me,” says Denise McKenzie-Lee, known for her earthy ceramics layered with texture. Her foray into the medium began with a gift certificate to a pottery class. “I love entertaining, so I wanted to make my own set of dishes,” she recalls. “The instructor said, ‘It’s going to be a long time before you can do that.’ It wasn’t. I’m prolific when I become interested in something.” Her pieces, crafted with porcelain and stoneware, are perfectly imperfect reflecting a gritty sentiment. “I call it rustic modern. I’m attracted to textures: a rusty tray, rocks, rough edges, things that look burnt,” she says. Next up: experimenting with glass and non-functional work. No one is underestimating her now.

ANIKA POITIER

ASP & Company, Los Angeles Anika Poitier’s first love was film. Yet with a child on the way, she says, “I needed a creative outlet that was more kid-friendly.” So Poitier teamed up with her interior designer mother on a textile and accessories line. Their first collection centered on female artists and grew from there. A signature design is an infinity-style serpent. “It symbolizes strength and the journey to empowerment,” says the designer, who employs her filmmaker eye when selecting materials, and is drawn to linen for its transparent and natural qualities. “I love the way light shines through. We all want to exist in a calm, nurturing space.” Today, that notion rings more true than ever.

JOINT VENTURE KANNA AOKI & RAB TERRY

Using fluid paint strokes, Kanna Aoki captures the magical light of Bay Area scenes in her work. Rab Terry, who has a science background, brings a spirit of exploration to his abstract Venetian plaster paintings (above), concocting custom pigments, layering color, and then sanding and burnishing to reveal what lies beneath. The artists discussed their joint show at Studio Gallery, owned by Terry and his wife, Ferris, September 24 through October 12. studiogallerysf.com

to the work in the show rather than just putting up the greatest hits. Why do you make a great pairing? RT: Kanna’s a representational painter, but she’s not averse to experimentation. There are certain people whose work goes well with mine, but maybe it’s static. Kanna’s process is more dynamic. KA: Both of our work has a lot of light, color and airiness. It’s nice to have the realism on one side and the purely abstract on the other. It leaves space to bounce back and forth. Luxury textile maker and Healdsburg-based Sandra Jordan developed an appreciation for artisan craftsmanship as a girl in her native Peru. Today, interior designers around the world use her silky-to-the-touch textiles made from the fleece of purebred alpacas in the Peruvian Andes, a fiber the Incas called Clouds on Earth. The color palette of Sandra Jordan Prima Alpaca’s newest collection, Tierra, celebrates Peru’s dynamic topography, from the sea-washed hues of the Ballestas Islands to the rocky vistas and luminous glaciers of the Andes. Standouts include a vibrant turmeric-toned bouclé (above) that Jordan worked on for years, and Amazonas, a lush green Suri textile that evokes the rainforest. sandrajordan.com

JOINT VENTURE PHOTOS: COURTESY STUDIO GALLERY. GLOW UP PHOTO: COURTESY PALECEK. LAUNCH PHOTO: ARIN ALMUELLE.

What’s currently inspiring your work? KA: Everyone’s been sheltered in place and not taking vacations, so I’ve been going through old slides from trips that I photographed to see if there’s anything I can do paintings from, maybe Italy or France. I’ll also have paintings of California. We live in an amazing place. RT: I’ve been using serenity as inspiration. A lot of my pieces use hues of the sea or watercolors. I’m also working with some different materials. I want some continuity of look and feel

When Palecek introduced its chandeliers—handcrafted of natural materials like swooping strands of wooden beads and playful rattan sticks—they instantly became iconic. Now the company has created sconces, flush mounts and outdoor pendants inspired by organic materials, from fossilized clam to petrified wood. “Bleached coconut shell is prominent in all of our lighting and really gorgeous,” says Cheryl Somoano, director of lighting and accessories. They also developed outdoor fixtures and had them certified as wet-listed, which can sustain direct water contact, or damp-treated, for under a porch or awning. Says Somoano, “Both use synthetic materials and powder-coated metal so they stay resistant to wind and rain.” palecek.com

MARIN’S MARVEL RH COMES HOME

WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING

Stepping onto a path crafted with bluestone slabs and passing through a stand of century-old heritage olive trees to a bank of retractable glass-and-steel doors, one senses this is not shopping as usual. This is RH Marin, The Gallery at the Village—and it’s the latest chapter in the company’s quest to reimagine retail. Located in The Village at Corte Madera, the 60,000-square-foot structure houses what’s billed as “one of the largest collections of luxury home furnishings in the world.” The RH concept of elegantly integrating luxury dining and drink with shopping was born in the mind of Gary Friedman, RH’s CEO and chairman. Currently, the brand has 24 large-scale design galleries—curated, home-like showrooms— and 10 of those include restaurants. RH Marin is one of the 10, and it has a different feel. As Friedman says, it is “a deeply

personal project given its proximity to our headquarters in Corte Madera.” Pass through the glass portals, and customers face choices: stay on the main level to peruse rooms decorated with RH Interiors furniture and accessories (top, right), or ascend the double floating staircase illuminated with a cascade of the brand’s Helix chandeliers to explore RH Modern offerings or receive assistance in the interactive Interior Design Firm & Atelier. The topmost level holds the Rooftop Restaurant & Park (right) that offers views of Mt. Tamalpais and the San Francisco Bay. Below, shoppers bustle and cars zoom past on Highway 101, but in this setting, they seem far away. “This space blurs the lines between residential and retail, indoors and outdoors, home and hospitality,” says Friedman. “It’s a reflection of our very best work to date.” rh.com

DE GOURNAY: HAND-PAINTED INTERIORS

LX_SF36_Scene.indd 68

Known worldwide for its elegant hand-painted wallcoverings, de Gournay has been adding drama and romance to interior spaces for more than three decades. The family-owned company’s distinctive designs range from new interpretations of 18th- and 19th-century chinoiserie to Art Deco and Art Nouveau patterns and Korean Chaekgeori artworks rendered in bold color palettes. Founder Claud Cecil Gurney offers a rare peek behind the scenes in de Gournay: Hand-Painted Interiors, a ravishing new book that shows the wallpapers in head-turning spaces created by interior designers like India Mahdavi, Kelly Wearstler and Irakli Zaria. Learn the colorful backstory and how the custom patterns are created by in-house artists. San Francisco is fortunate to be home to one of just two de Gournay showrooms in the U.S. rizzoliusa.com

THE INSIDER DAVID BRENNER

Walls in the Bay Area and beyond are coming to vibrant life, thanks to Habitat Horticulture, whose vertical gardens have popped up in both residences and spaces like Salesforce Tower, California Academy of Sciences and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Founder David Brenner, a living-wall pioneer in the U.S., talked with Luxe about going green. habitathorticulture.com What sparked the idea for Habitat Horticulture form? While studying horticulture at Cal Poly, I did an apprenticeship at the Royal Botanic Gardens in London. I was working at this tropical nursery called Kew Gardens, with plants that grow naturally on trees and rock faces— epiphytic plants. At the same time, I saw vertical gardens while traveling in Europe and was blown away. It’s like a huge billboard that provides an ecosystem and an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. I went back to Cal Poly and began prototyping the system that we use today.

How do you choose plantings and design? I start with the texture. Every plant has its own character. Maybe the new growth in the springtime will be bronze and you’ll see this swath of reddish tone coming through the wall. It’s like an orchestra throughout the year of things flowering and taking center stage while other things are becoming dormant.

photos: garry belinsky.

You also studied psychology. How does that apply? There’s something

about plants that makes you feel calm. Through my environmental psychology classes, I found that there was all of this research to prove that. It’s something that was inherent to our evolution. So how do we bring greenery into our everyday lives?

THE WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN + BATH

Excitement is permeating the kitchen and bath industry—just talk to an expert, and you’ll feel it too. Materials, both new and centuries old, are transcending the ordinary, even the “high-end” rubric; instead, they are interesting, they evoke warmth— they tell a story. The key words are no longer form and function but rather, beauty and technology. Together, these two formerly opposite elements create intimate spaces that are vividly original.

“If you begin at no, you’ll never get to yes.” Words Nancy Epstein has lived and worked by since designing her first piece of furniture more than 20 years ago. “I brought the design to our hometown cabinetmaker and he didn’t like it. I didn’t listen and had him make it anyway, and he was so taken by the results that he asked me to join his company designing products.” Such tenacity eventually led Epstein to found Artistic Tile, where she and her team aim to “make the world a better place … one tile at a time.” Today, her tile empire encompasses eight national showrooms, a cadre of reps working with hundreds of architects, designers and dealers, an engaging website, and 100,000 social media followers. “We are very ‘connected’ to our audience and their preferences, well beyond sales numbers,” she says.

“The gift of the genuine, the real, is the ultimate luxury, so the ultimate kitchen and bath should be outfitted with natural stone.”

MATERIAL MIX: WHAT’S TRENDING IN TILE + Brecciated marble slab. This is an iconic material for Artistic Tile; one Epstein loves so much, she permanently installs it in every new showroom. The color and sense of monumental energy of Breccia Imperiale, Breccia Viola and Arabescato Corchia make them perfect choices for giving visual stature to baths and kitchens. + Glass mosaic. “We love this material in geometric, floral and foliate mosaic designs, in colorful blends, in mirrored mixes and also in tonal white-on-white colorways,” she says. “Lately, we have been creating mosaics with an ombré effect in both kitchens and baths. + Quartzite slabs. The color of these natural stones is breathtaking, and their high resistance to acid etching and low porosity make them especially attractive to those who seek a prep surface that combines real beauty and ease of maintenance.

PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON SURFACES Porcelain. Kitchens are spaces for dinner, homework, lounging, entertaining and more. Homeowners are moving away from granite and toward porcelain for its resistance to stains, costeffectiveness and durability. Wood. Due to the popularity of open-concept floor plans, flooring choices are extending from space to space, like hardwood in the living area that continues into the kitchen. Oak and walnut are the most popular due to their durability. Stone Slabs. A slab backsplash is clean and adds just the right amount of drama to any kitchen.

The word “signature” resonates with Hammerton Lighting on two fronts. On the product side, its decorative lighting line, Hammerton Signature, speaks to the company’s unlimited customization options. Each light in the collection—whether in design, materials, options or craftsmanship—is a “signature” piece. Stylistically speaking, Hammerton’s “signature” is its relationship with nature as reflected in its designs. “Our aesthetic has always involved an exploration of the natural world,” says founder and vice president of design, Levi Wilson. “Filigree, Art Nouveau and Art Deco are great examples of this.” While the standard industry definition for custom lighting assumes a limited choice of options, in Hammerton’s hands “anything is possible”—a credo that has led the bespoke, entrepreneurial spirit of this American company for a quarter of a century.

EMPLOYEE-CENTRIC SUCCESS The “Made in America” ideology may be different for every American manufacturer, but at Hammerton it’s centered around the transformative power of each of its employees. “Every day at Hammerton, we design, engineer, fabricate, finish, pack, ship and service a unique assortment of products that are entirely different than the day before and the day after,” says president Bill Shott. “Fundamentally, we are tackling new problems and embracing new opportunities every hour of every day. We rely on the personal enterprise of each employee—their creativity, inventiveness, resilience, collaboration and problem-solving skills—to do this successfully. Bottom line, we recognize that Hammerton’s most valuable assets walk in and out of our doors daily.” What is more American than an unshakable belief in the power of the individual?

“Comfort and authenticity are foundational elements of today’s ‘luxury’ value proposition.”

VANGUARD FURNITURE vanguardfurniture.com |

vanguardfurniture

Anyone who has ever tried to sew a straight seam, build a cabinet or finish a piece of furniture knows how difficult it is. It requires not only experience and know-how, but creativity and a collaborative mindset. Enter western North Carolina-based Vanguard Furniture, the custom case goods and upholstery furniture maker, whose skilled artisans have elevated furniture production to a fine art. “From material selection to hand-applied, multi-step finishes, every detail is considered,” president Andy Bray says. Offered with endless customization options, Vanguard’s furniture speaks to the American mindset that home is the ultimate form of self-expression. “Each piece of Vanguard furniture reflects the authenticity of a unique material or design sensibility. And yet, each piece is tailored to the distinctive tastes and experiences of its imaginer,” Bray says.

INGENUITY AT ITS FINEST Over the years, Vanguard has innovated with new technologies to improve service. Operational efficiencies allow us to create one-of-a-kind pieces and have them available for delivery in fewer than four weeks. And our new 3D visualizer applies state-of-the-art technology to visualize custom options and finishes on the fly and to rotate and examine your creation from any angle.

CUSTOMIZATION: THE AMERICAN WAY The American spirit is more independent, and as a result, prizes customization. From a design standpoint, products must be scaled and tailored to American sensibilities; those who desire furniture of distinction because they value their independence and individuality. From the production standpoint, the only way to manifest that goal is to do it locally. American manufacturing—especially the way we do it at Vanguard—builds furniture one piece at a time, so that each can be unique.

“At Vanguard, everything we create involves provenance and customization.”

Gathering GROUNDS THE MODERN-DAY GREAT ROOM IS ALL ABOUT VERSATILITY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

As we take solace in our houses, the kitchen’s role as the heart of the home has become more essential than ever—it’s where we take business calls, help our children with homework, gather for breakfast and evening meals, and enjoy a refreshing cocktail at day’s end. So, it comes as no surprise that blending the kitchen and family room into one great room layout is high on most clients’ wish lists. Today, designers are planning adaptable spaces ideal for prepping meals, breaking bread and intimate socializing, as seen in this stunning project by designer Adam Hunter.

Designer Adam Hunter chose striking custom metal Amuneal cabinetry for this sprawling kitchen, living and dining area in Nashville, Tennessee, which he designed with architect Steve Giannetti. Mattaliano pendant lights from Holly Hunt, Amtrend stools and a fire engine red Lacanche range round out the sophisticated mix. Rocky Mountain Hardware sinks pair with Waterworks faucets.

BIG PICTURE

For designer Adam Hunter, this impressive space started as a dream. “I had a vision of an all-metal kitchen in a beautiful patina with a floating marble hood,” he explains. With the help of all-star architect Steve Giannetti, trusting clients and an ace custom cabinetry company, Hunter was lucky enough to see his fantasy come to life. adamhunterinc.com What a room! I wanted to change up my own aesthetic with this project and I certainly reached high. But it really started with doing something unique, which was creating an all-metal kitchen.

How did you decide on the marble hood? We actually had to frame the house so it could support the hood, but I knew we had to go for it! The marble, which my dealers call a pinot noir, has moments of eggplant, burgundy and just the right kind of gold. When it all gleams together at a certain point in the day, it’s magic.

PHOTOS: COURTESY ADAM HUNTER INC.

Talk to us about the cabinetry. Amuneal created some really luxurious textures and colors with stainless steel designs. We sort of invented a patina we’re calling “root beer.” It works so well with some of the other tones and materials found throughout the space. The glass cases flanking the range continue the view out to the backyard—they’re definitely a favorite feature.

Cabinets of CURIOSITY While we may not be able to control everything around us, organized cabinets are essential for a sane state of mind. As we spend more time at home, it seems we can never have enough storage, especially for the hardest-working rooms. GREAT HEIGHTS

To create a soaring space in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, designer Amber Brown Matlack of Brown Interiors knew she wanted to preserve the charm and history of the original 1935 Tudor-style residence when crafting this great room. After combining what was once a galley kitchen, small breakfast nook and dining room into a central area, she extended the ceiling into the attic to achieve a vaulted effect and expose the wooden beam. The warm color scheme evokes a nostalgic feel, including the mauve and gray tones on the cabinetry and a beautiful stone backsplash. Brown Matlack says she aimed for “a sense of openness and livability in the heartbeat of the house.” browninteriors.net

To celebrate the agrarian history of a family’s Bridgehampton property, Historical Concepts and Michael Davis Design & Construction envisioned a structure reminiscent of traditional potato barns in the area. Cedar board-and-batten cladding and masonry details, including Connecticut fieldstone retaining walls and natural bluestone cleft slabs designed in tandem with Hollander Design Landscape Architects, speak to the old-meets-new ethos.

TAKE COMFORT Take care. Stay safe. Be well. Who could have guessed the weight these phrases would take on in this uncharted new decade? Times of introspective nesting have illuminated that such directives start at home, reinvigorating a discussion on the many ways design can enhance our mental and physical wellbeing. Here, we share an assortment of restorative spaces whose principles—thoughtful details, indulgent amenities and ample conversation with nature— provide ideas for sanctuaries large and small.

Knowing that the indoor pool would be used through the colder months, the team nestled the feature in the ground, adding a south-facing skylight. “Between the warmth of the rammed earth and the natural light, it’s a perfect winter pool,” says Historical Concepts principal Kevin Clark. “It doesn’t feel like a cold conservatory.”

Sweet 1ESCAPE A BRIDGEHAMPTON SPORTS BARN OFFERS THE ULTIMATE FAMILY RETREAT.

“With a remote property, you have the opportunity to create a destination,” says Kevin Clark, principal of Historical Concepts. And so it came to be that a family’s brief for a recreational outbuilding on their Bridgehampton estate evolved into a sports barn laden with wellness features. Surrounded by acres of pristine farmland, the structure demanded a sensitive approach, one that Historical Concepts—an architecture firm known for legacy properties rooted in place— was well-suited for. Alongside interior designer Steven Gambrel, landscape architect Edmund Hollander and master builder Michael Davis, who assembled the team, plans were drawn for a lowslung, cedar-clad activity center softly folded into the rolling terrain. The decision to nestle the barn into, not onto, the landscape is an exercise in both historical accuracy and ingenuity. First, it references semisubterranean potato barns local to the region. Second, it meets a Hamptons building code limiting accessory structures to 20 feet high, while still allowing for a three-story structure for all the family’s amenity wishes to live in harmony. In full, the sprawling retreat includes family offices, a large vaulted great room, a kitchen, an indoor lap pool and spa, men’s and women’s locker rooms and an exercise room—plus a sunken tennis court with viewing pavilion. “The lay of the land and the feel of a place reveal themselves when you put pen to paper,” says Clark. “The top floor gym has a wonderful

LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 139

view over the property, and the sauna, steam and massage rooms round out the indoor activities,” shares Davis. “In addition to the gathering room, there is a suite of three family offices particularly helpful during these times.” Throughout, Gambrel’s interiors scheme—a medley of warm woods and chalky blue, green and sand hues—sets a restorative tone. “The palette is muted, based on the environment as inspiration,” he explains, and indeed, the natural setting inspires. Complementing the agrarian landscape, Hollander took care in employing native plantings, such as bayberry, winterberry and viburnum, to welcome birds, bees and other pollinators. “Healthy, living landscapes are essential to the wellness of all visitors, all species,” he notes. Like many affluent New Yorkers, the family decamped to their country residence in the early days of the pandemic. In turn, the beloved barn has become a haven beyond anything client or design team could have planned for—a hub of safety, togetherness and health. “One of the most rewarding parts of our job is when you see a place you designed be truly life-altering for a family,” says Clark, adding, “When you treat home as resort, there’s something magical about that.”

GOODVIBES THREE DESIGNERS SHARE A PRINCIPLE THAT SHAPES THEIR PERSONAL PRACTICE.

LAURENCE CARR

New York, New York Wabi-sabi is a worldview rooted in Japanese origin all about taming desire for perfection in design, freeing us to live more sustainably and impart truly authentic style in our homes. To seek it is to honor the patina and character of our interiors and collected pieces, find harmony with nature, honor simplicity and do away with excess clutter. I help clients seek wabi-sabi through utilization of the seven Zen principles— one of which, for example, is incorporating unique pieces from our clients’ own collections. This practice shifts focus from trendy items to those that have been built lovingly, and with noble materials. Together with our clients, we identify character-rich pieces and intentionally place them in different rooms as the sturdy roots of our interior design approach. laurencecarr.com

MACELLE ALBEDA

Pasadena, California Biophilia stems from Greek as “love of life” and is about our innate human need to be connected to nature. Biophilic design focuses on how to layer nature into interiors, whether through actual elements like

LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 140

plants, stone, wood, water and natural light, or “biomimicry,” which are shapes and patterns that remind us of being outdoors. The benefits are substantial: Close proximity to nature triggers a dopamine response in our brains that promotes well-being, lowering blood pressure and stress. Starting from the most basic ways to inspire biophilia, you can paint walls in colors we find in nature, like green, blue and brown. Then move on to adding motifs and plants. Advanced options include stone walls, water features and changing the building’s access to natural light. studiomahal.com

NINA MAGON

Houston, Texas One way of fostering well-being at home that I believe in and have used with great results is Vastu Shastra, an Indian system of architecture similar to feng shui. In Vastu Shastra, there are 5 elements: Earth (Bhumi), Water (Jala), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), and Space (Akasha). The central part of a house is ruled by the space element. As all directions meet in the center, it is the holiest and most powerful zone. So when possible, I like to ensure that the most-used room—often the living area—is located in the direct center and designed with a minimal aesthetic for less clutter and low furniture to allow for plenty of natural light. This approach harmonizes the flow of energy throughout the home, which facilitates good health. contourinteriordesign.com

LOST in REVERIE

There are serene rooms and then there are rooms where serenity seems to emanate from the walls, softening your disposition on viewing. This elixir of a bedroom in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—a collaboration between WRJ Design and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson—is decidedly the latter. Here, designer Rush Jenkins and architect Ray Calabro sound off on achieving Zen in tandem. wrjdesign.com; bcj.com Set the scene. RC: The site for the house is on a butte that overlooks the Snake River Valley with extraordinary views. The bedroom is located at the southern, most private end of the home and is embedded into the gentle slope of the site, connecting with the landscape at a more immediate scale. RJ: There’s a calmness and a majestic beauty that surrounds you. That’s what the color palette, the lighting, the simplicity of the design were about—creating harmony with nature. Material connection. RC: The southern wall is smooth-formed cast-in-place concrete, the flooring is white oak with a custom finish, the window wall is aluminum with a clear anodized finish, and the ceiling is composed of panels of white oak. RJ: The rug is bamboo silk, the bed is really luxurious suede, the pillows are a cashmere plaid from Loro Piana. Those tonal elements are about continuity with the exteriors and the architecture. Design highlights. RC: The water feature that stretches along the master suite is dynamic. We placed mirror-finish stainless steel panels on the roof overhang above the stream. The combination of gently moving water and mirror reflects constantly changing patterns of light into the master suite throughout the day. The effect is magical. RJ: The seamless windows in this room actually open from the bottom. Can you imagine waking up hearing the water rippling and the birds chirping in the garden? Sometimes, you’ll see a moose having a drink. You don’t get closer to nature than that. Dream team. RC: WRJ’s selections reinforce the quiet elegance of the home. The luxe finishes and fabrics express their commitment to quality and attention to detail that are guiding principles in the architecture. RJ: This house was a unified vision. The client wanted peace and simplicity, and every team member came at this design from the same philosophy.

Home WORK

Some decamped to dining tables. Others converted spare rooms to studies. In the immediate wake of the pandemic, remote work culture shifted inexorably, and with it, the landscape of home office design. With more and more companies adopting permanently flexible policies, it’s no surprise that designers are seeing an uptick in office updates. On deck? Spaces that foster productivity and focus, certainly—but also tranquility and moodboosting chic. Take a cue from these calming desks around the country.

▲ FRESH PERSPECTIVE In Vero Beach, Florida, designer Kevin Dumais’ unconventional furniture configuration is twofold. First, it makes way for foot traffic between the room’s two entrances. Second, it sets the client up to take advantage of the resplendent views and shifting sunlight throughout the day. dumaisid.com

BETTER TOGETHER With restorative garden views for the taking, designer Bryan Yates aligned a Dallas, Texas, couple’s work areas along a single window wall. The decision has a reverse fishbowl effect: The elegantly minimal design can be conversely enjoyed from the outdoor entertaining spots. yatesdesygn.com

AS TOLD TO GRACE BEULEY HUNT

From the very beginning, it was meant to be a place of rest. The architect picked the location for it’s amazing natural light and we worked with a feng shui master. Building started in September to encourage good luck and prosperity for the home. It was a special brief in that way—there was meaning behind every detail. We’re seeing more and more clients asking for specialty rooms, but these clients—two firstgeneration Chinese sisters—really use this space. After a hard day’s work, they retreat to drink tea together, practice calligraphy and meditate. They wanted to honor their heritage—but to modernize, too. Tea room window treatments are traditionally bamboo; we chose a light grass Conrad shade. The Chilewich rug is textured like a tatami mat and the white-oak furnishings are custom by Chi Wing Lo, a Chinese furniture designer living in Italy. The table has natural stone for water draining and a metal plate for the hot teapot to rest on. In spring, the sisters drink Longjing tea. In summer, jasmine tea paired with red bean pastry. In autumn, black tea with moon cake and in winter, Pu’er tea. They have an incredible collection of ceramic vessels; their most-prized is a Gongfu tea set from Yingge, a town famous for its production of porcelain. It was an inspiring project in that we learned so much from our clients. It also showed us how important it is to have a room dedicated to feeling good in—to feeling happy. We’re now looking to incorporate this principal into more of our designs. sullivandesignstudio.com

Imagine the smell of a cut of steak that has retained its seasonings like never before; the taste and texture of each slice you bite into, its juices and flavor just as you prefer. A feast for the senses, if ever there was one. This could be your dinner, every evening. Allow us to introduce you to sous vide … the term is French for “under vacuum” and the technique is revolutionary. Vacuum seal your food—spices, marinades and all—and submerge it to cook in water. You can regulate the temperature to within a single degree and the heat will be evenly distributed from start to finish. The result, whether steak or fish, an egg or vegetables, redefines “perfectly cooked.” It used to be that maintaining the condition of the water demanded complexity, with equipment and processes that weren’t suited to the home. But no more. Thanks to Signature Kitchen Suite, this method is now yours to experience on the daily. Bathe your steak to its best quality ever, and then give it a little charring on the cooktop— all using one, first-of-its-kind range. Everything you need is right on your cooktop, with no extra tools or equipment required.

TO PROTECT AND SERVE DO YOUR WINE THE HONOR OF CAREFUL KEEPING

From growing, harvesting and crushing the grapes to aging and bottling the resulting libation, so much effort and attention is devoted to the careful art of winemaking. The same level of thoughtfulness should be given to its next phase, no? Signature Kitchen Suite thinks the answer is certainly yes, and that’s why they collaborated with the world’s most knowledgeable vintners, historians and scientists to develop wine refrigerators qualified for their occupants.

Independent temperature zones enable one to organize red, white and sparkling varieties according to their needs; an inverted linear compressor and a metal interior minimize vibration to less than 2 gal (cm/s2); dark-tinted, triple-paned glass protects from UV; and evaporators maintain steady humidity levels. It’s the most ideal wine storage system, ever.

Designed to replicate the conditions of old-world wine caves, the 18-inch and 24-inch Integrated Column Wine Refrigerators are a sommelier’s dream. GUIDE TO THE GRAZING BOARD

Ah, the grazing board. It can be an after-school snack plate, elegant party hors d’oeuvre or individual meal. Delicious and aesthetically pleasing, this display of abundance is perfect for foodies of any age and in every setting. It’s a culinary staple. Given the nature of its ingredients, a grazing board demands a lot from one’s refrigerator. Meats should be quite a bit chillier than fruits and veggies, for example, and most of it can’t sit out for too long once you’ve put your spread together. Signature Kitchen Suite’s 24-inch and 30-inch Integrated Column Refrigerators prove the ultimate partner. Their Lift and Go™ bins and drawers offer a variety of places to customize storage conditions to the needs of specific foods, while a movable snack drawer is expansive enough to house extra-large serving platters. Let’s go to the market.

Find your canvas. We think wood boards make for beautiful backgrounds, but any traylike surface will do.

Decide on your must-haves. What are your favorite cheeses? Are you obsessed with olives? Or is red pepper jelly your jam (pun intended)?

Start pairing. Choose more foods with your first picks in mind and be intuitive about it. Just because something isn’t a conventional match, doesn’t mean you can’t include it. Trust your gut, as they say.

Slice, dice + roll! Get creative with presentation; think brie triangles and cheddar chunks, pepperoni chips and rolled prosciutto.

Top it off with extra flavor. Nestle dipping bowls into spaces around the board and fill them with yummy condiments (this can also be a great place for items that give off liquid you want to contain, like olives and pickles).

Melding traditional craftsmanship with the tenets of modern design, Created™ Hardwood strives to produce furnishings unmatched in quality and beauty, built to last a lifetime. The family-owned company is run by a father and his two sons, and its operations span the country. “Our products are designed in California and manufactured in Ohio, a place where we grew up,” says Jon Hicks, one of the second generation and vice president of brand and design. “I think that wide geographical range really serves to inspire a more diverse and universally appealing product. We like to think we offer something for everyone.” No matter the aesthetic, every piece tells a story of long-thought-lost artistry. Created™ Hardwood only uses native species that are harvested locally and dried for 12 to 24 months before its specialists, who employ time-honored American woodworking techniques, get to work.

PURITY. BALANCE. RESTRAINT. These three words drive the design of all of Created™ Hardwood’s products, from the cut of the wood to the finish of the hardware. “In short, it’s not about us,” Hicks shares. “We want to showcase the most beautiful raw materials available in the purest expressions possible. We believe that our products are best served without the distraction of adornments or contrivances. Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.” Indeed, each design is functional, practical and durable in addition to its beauty, which exudes from a sense of liveliness the slabs retain. “Look for the Created™ coin as a symbol of quality, respect and commitment to honoring each tree’s legacy and preserving it for generations to come.”

“The phrase ‘Made in America’ embodies pride and belonging. In the same way that food contributes to the identity of any culture, so does design.”

Ingenuity and integrity define American craftsmanship, and for Florian Roeper, the founder of Studio Roeper and a talented maker of furniture, this entails finding inspiration in the materials. “My process is driven by a passion for mixing materials, as well as creating a dialog between them and conveying their uniqueness,” he shares. “If I discover a walnut slab with a massive crack in it, my first thought is ‘How can I enhance that crack?’ My goal is to create perfect imperfections.” Based in San Francisco, Studio Roeper is dedicated to the creation of finely crafted luxury furniture for private residences, boutique hotels and design connoisseurs alike, all of whom Roeper himself feels connected to through a shared vision. “My clients and I are equal in pursuit and achievement of the American Dream. We are individuals putting in hard work to build meaningful lives.”

THE CASE FOR KEEPING IT LOCAL Asked to share his thoughts on the importance of American-based design and production, Roeper says shopping for locally handmade goods is an investment in neighbor, city and country. “There is not only pride in making, but also pride in owning, American-made pieces,” he continues. “Outsourcing ideation and manufacturing to other countries creates a void in our creative sector. It also leads to cheap goods that are poorly made and, worst of all, often contributes to a culture of waste and disposable goods.” While on the subject, he brings the perspective even closer to home, commenting on his state’s contribution to American design. “California has always produced a kind of frontier mentality. We go for it, and if it fails, we go again until we succeed.”

ometimes, the best addition to a home is subtraction. When architect Ken Linsteadt began to reimagine the estate his clients had purchased in Marin County, he started sketching. “It may be a dying art form in my profession, but I can’t think clearly until I’ve spent time drawing,” he says. “That’s when the ideas begin to flow.” As he sketched the 2-acre property that’s hemmed with rugged stone walls and fortified by mature live-oak trees, one idea kept unfolding: Less was more. Although long considered a grand estate, the home started life as a simple, shingled cottage. “At some point, it was added on to, and it became a large, L-shaped structure that felt a bit incongruous with the landscape,” says Linsteadt. “We needed to take it back to a simpler form and engage the surroundings as a natural extension of the house.” It was, after all, the landscape that attracted the owners to the property. “I went to high school around the corner,” says the wife who, as a student, would often walk by the entrance and wonder what lay beyond the gates. When she and her husband relocated to Marin County from San Francisco, she couldn’t help but continue to wander by the moss-covered stone fence, intrigued by the setting and the privacy it promised. She eventually wrote a letter to the former owner, asking if she would ever consider selling. “I must have hit her at the right moment. Within a month, we were the new owners,” the wife says. With Linsteadt on board, the reinvention of the residence began. “An added wing cut the house off from the garden and obstructed the view of a stunning large oak tree that is truly the heart of the property,” says Linsteadt. “By removing it, we brought the home back to its roots and focused on creating a better flow toward the terraced garden, right down to the pool.”

“IT WAS ESSENTIAL THAT THE HOME DELIVER SOPHISTICATION, BUT ALSO FEEL COMFORTABLE AND RELAXED.” –PALMER WEISS

LX_NAT56_HOM_Lindsteadt_SF36pickup_10.indd 200

Inside, the clients sought to keep the feel of the original dwelling, while improving the circulation. “The layout was like a warren of small, dark rooms—as opposed to a light and bright integrated whole,” says the wife, who wanted to create flow throughout the formal and informal areas and envisioned a large, sun-filled kitchen and an adjacent cozy family room with direct access to the gardens. Linsteadt went to work opening the spaces to one another, maximizing natural light and orienting the residence toward the gardens and tree lines. Meanwhile, landscape architect Janell Hobart worked in tandem with him to design outdoor rooms and gardens that felt at once accessible and harmonious with the architecture. “The gardens before were super terraced, with so much disconnect, chaotic plantings and no continuity whatsoever,” says Hobart. “We started afresh, but we saved all the mature trees while creating a garden that’s much more accessible to the house.” Meanwhile, the couple hired designer Palmer Weiss to deliver a fresh take on the interiors. Weiss executed their vision for the decor by using modern, fun pieces with traditional silhouettes that complement the outdoors. “The house has a definite sense of grandeur, but its setting is Marin County, where the natural world is celebrated,” says Weiss. “You don’t want interiors to be fighting for attention with the views outside. Instead, we wanted the design to live up to the grandness of the estate without being stuffy or sterile. This is very much a family space, and the clients have three children and a dog who live and play here. It was essential that the home deliver sophistication, but also feel comfortable and relaxed.” Weiss kept to a serene color palette, which moves from soft mauves and grays in the formal living room and private bedrooms to more energizing shades of green, teal and blue in the public living spaces. She chose moments to be intentionally casual, designing an oversize, bright-teal sectional for a more relaxed spirit in the family room. Weiss delivered luxury to the formal dining room with statementmaking green de Gournay wallpaper and an antique chandelier from Europe. Her happy place is in the mix of the two, says the designer. “We walked the line between traditional and modern, high style and low fuss, and in the end it feels polished—but very family friendly, too,” she says. And now, the owners say their favorite moments involve wandering outside into the garden, watching the children swim, and picking vegetables and fruit to eat. Thanks to Hobart’s expertise, something is always growing and flourishing, says the wife, who often leaves a basket full of fresh produce from the kitchen garden outside the property’s entrance gate. No doubt passersby—as she once was—still pause there to get a glimpse of the magical landscape before walking away with its fruits.

8/10/20 11:49 AM

In the dining room, designer Palmer Weiss started with the de Gournay wall panels. “The millwork in the home is beautiful, and we did not want to detract from that,” she says. “But every dining room needs a touch of drama.” The drama is enhanced by a Venini chandelier (it came in more than 140 pieces and had to be reassembled on-site), a bespoke ebonized table and custom Erinn V. dining chairs.

Architect Ken Linsteadt endowed the living room with larger windows to bring light and views into the house. Weiss added a soothing color palette to highlight the furniture mix, which includes a gray sofa and a love seat with wood arms, both by Baker. Across the room, another love seat by Patricia Edwards sits near the windows. A pair of McGuire armchairs and coffee tables by David Iatesta complete the scene.

pril Gruber lay awake in bed with visions of the Piedmont house she’d seen earlier in the day playing through her mind. When she and her husband visited the home, they agreed it was not what they were looking to purchase for their growing family. The 1957-era house was not only a time capsule, seemingly untouched since the day it was finished, it was divorced from its expansive and very overgrown lot. What’s more, in a nod to the car-loving nature of that era, it was fronted by a formidable carport, and the enclosed entry from the parking spaces to the home had all the charm of a commercial garage. But yet, thoughts of the home kept Gruber up at night. “As a residential designer, I have the need to solve building puzzles,” she says. “I never had a great ‘a-ha’ moment about this place, I just kept drawing until it became clear that this was our house.” Her husband, Aric Shalev, was immediately on board with the plan. “He believed in my ability to remake it,” says Gruber. The transformation happened as the family grew. The couple had three children in the household when they purchased the home, and shortly after Gruber became pregnant with their fourth. “During my pregnancy, I was on bed rest for five weeks in the hospital,” she says. “I took my client work with me, and after I finished my business day, I worked on redrawing this house as our dream home.” Her first move was to work with landscape architect David Thorne to eliminate the carport and cramped entry at the front of the house, relocating parking to a freestanding garage she designed and creating an entry courtyard complete with a living area and outdoor kitchen. “It made a world of difference,” Gruber notes. “We went from a cramped, unpleasant entry sequence to one that’s open, light-filled and has space for outdoor dining.”

“I JUST KEPT DRAWING UNTIL IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THIS WAS OUR HOUSE.” –APRIL GRUBER

In the back, Thorne reshaped the sloping lot in order to make way for a level spot for a pool and expansive play areas for the kids. “The backyard is a fairly steep site, and we were able to set the pool within an ipe deck we floated over the topography,” he says. “The combination of wood with concrete and stone feel right on the wooded site.” Before the remodel, the entry was uncommonly large and outfitted with a retractable glass roof and built-in planters that allowed the room to serve as a plant conservatory. Gruber had a different vision. Although she made the space a bit narrower with the addition of a wine room, it was still spacious. “In the end we kept it mostly open, and it became the linchpin of the house—a beautiful space you pass through to enter the living room, library or bedroom wing,” she says. “Now, during celebrations, we roll up the rug and set up tables for family dinners. It becomes a lovely dining area filled with laughter.” With the background in place, Gruber reached out to a long-time acquaintance, designer Mead Quin, for assistance. “I respected what April had done as an architect, and I wanted to help her layer in softness while highlighting the architecture of the house,” says Quin. Since establishing connections with the exterior was a driving force, Quin wanted to make sure that the colors and textures complemented the outdoors. “The big windows and doors and the scenes of the treetops outside give this home a tree house feeling,” she says. “When you have bright colors inside, it detracts from what’s going on outside, so we kept things soft and relatively quiet.” However, quiet doesn’t equal colorless and flat. In the large living room, the designer created two seating areas against the broad expanse of the board-formed concrete fireplace Gruber designed. One is anchored by a pair of soft gray sofas and a walnut coffee table, while the other is composed of a cream-colored sofa and a pair of tawny armchairs arranged around a marble-topped table. The dining room, which can be enclosed by the original, oversize folding doors, features an earthy grasscloth wallcovering, slate-blue drapery and a slate-blue bar around a zinc dining table. And the master bedroom, though done in muted shades of cream and taupe, features a wallpaper with a fern motif as the textured backdrop for a large upholstered headboard. All this helps Gruber achieve her goal of a peaceful family home. “We want the kids and our extended family and friends to spend time together,” she says. “This house facilitates that—whether it’s around the fire pit, in the family room, or in the kitchen with its large table where we usually eat. It’s those kinds of intentional social spaces that make this a special family home.”

Before the remodel, the large entry was a conservatory with a retractable skylight and built-in planters. Residential designer April Gruber reimagined the space while retaining its grand dimensions. She designed the massive boardformed concrete fireplace surround that holds a two-sided firebox and selected the oversize Gregorius Pineo lantern through Kneedler-Fauchère. The Anees Upholstery table is from Sloan Miyasato and the cream-colored rug is by Stark.

Above: The original folding doors that can be closed to separate the living and dining rooms were refurbished and remain a striking feature of the room. Through the doorway, the architectural back of the Baker sofa can be appreciated. Opposite: A pair of Gallotti & Radice chandeliers purchased at Nido Living hang from the lofty height of the living room. Two Baker sofas wearing Holly Hunt upholstery snuggle up to the fireplace; an Altura Furniture coffee table from De Sousa Hughes sits between them. The Elana leather bench by Bright Chair, also from De Sousa Hughes, divides the two seating areas.

Another dramatic note: The custom Lariat light fixture by Apparatus that loops above the bespoke dining table and Poliform chairs. A jute wallcovering by Cowtan & Tout, the Coraggio fabric used for the draperies, and Benjamin Moore’s Amherst Gray on the cabinetry add soft blue and gray notes.

Opposite: Designer Mead Quin and Gruber kept things in the house visually quiet so as not to detract from the views. The master bath, where marble tile from Integrated Resources Group (IRG) frames a leafy treetop scene, is a good example. The dual shower heads and controls are by Waterworks. Below: In the master bedroom, the upholstered RH bed is made up with custom linens from Anthem Bed & Bath. The Anna French wallcovering provides a gentle dose of pattern while Bec Brittain reading lights, purchased at The Future Perfect, add an architectural note. The nightstands were designed by Quin and crafted by Shada Build & Design.

omething happens in a house that witnesses the passing of a century. Shaped by the years and souls that flowed through its walls, these abodes become more than the sum of their masonry by absorbing the spirit of who and what came before. This was true for one young family’s home in Presidio Heights, originally built in 1926. As transplants hunting for a place to grow roots in a new city, they fell in love with the structure’s classical façade that should have had interior character to match. However, that was not the case. In pursuit of sleek minimalism, a previous renovation had stripped the rooms of their vintage charm. “From the outside, you have this beautiful residence, but inside, you felt like you could have been absolutely anywhere in the world, because all the things that made that home truly unique had been taken away,” recalls designer Eche Martinez, whom the young couple recruited to breathe life back into the space. “We wanted to come up with a visual language that gave this home a renewed identity.” Martinez first focused on bringing back some of the architectural depth suited to a house of its era. By luck, the entry hall’s spiral staircase with the original metalwork was left untouched. The grandeur of this surviving feature helped establish the tone for the rest of the finishes. Wooden surfaces were stained in a dark shade that the home would have originally had, including the doors and the bleached, beachy oak flooring used throughout. In the entry, Martinez installed a classic black-and-white checkered marble design that he calls “more appropriate for the vestibule of a house with this kind of historic prominence.” To ground the living room, Martinez and his team also created a vast new marble fireplace as a main focal point for gatherings. The most dramatic intervention is perhaps the creation of the library. When the designer and the couple first walked into what was then a blank white box, “we knew we really needed to reimagine the space, as it was such a wasted

opportunity,” says Martinez. “We decided to turn it into this beautiful, richly textured walnut library. We wanted it look like it has been here forever.” The new millwork became the ideal showcase for personal items, including a vibrant Kehinde Wiley portrait that Martinez nestled in a central alcove. “We actually built the library around that piece of art,” notes the designer. Thoughtfully incorporating the family’s artworks proved essential for injecting personality throughout the property. “We wanted to make sure that we had some strong visual references for each room, so the art started defining the aesthetic of each space.” In the living room, for example, the main seating area centers around a portrait by Spanish artist Salustiano, who uses the old Renaissance technique of crushing cochineal beetles to produce the work’s visceral red hue. A painting of such intense color called for an equally graphic palette, which the designer created with rich black sofas and a marble fireplace surround, punctuated by the wispy smokelike pattern of the rug that defines the seating area. Black walls and gold accents provided sharp contrast to the small Amedeo Modigliani etchings in the master bedroom. “They are beautiful, very subtle line drawings, so if we wanted them to stand out, we had to go all the way out there in terms of color,” explains Martinez. As a tonguein-cheek nod to the classical sculpture so often found in homes of this period, he also placed a deconstructed, jigsaw Venus marble statue by Troika, a European art collective, in the entry—a piece which spoke to the couple’s witty side. “If anything, they never wanted to take themselves too seriously,” notes Martinez. This spirit also guided the selection of furnishings and decor, which reflect a mix of contemporary, antique and custom items. “We wanted to create this narrative of a house that had been really lived in, with pieces collected by multiple generations under the same roof,” says the designer. This required hunting for unique finds, like the living room’s vintage matching Cassina sofas, sourced from two different dealers in the Netherlands. Some new pieces quickly took on sentimental value, like the dining room’s area rug that forms a pixelated map of Manhattan, where the family spent some memorable years together. For the secondary bedrooms, Martinez selected pieces “based on an imaginary guest we pictured staying there,” and one can imagine the refined visitor who might occupy the striking green, antique-filled guest room. These details add up to a house that feels far removed from the impersonal shell it had become, now transformed into spaces bristling with character. “We wanted to make sure we could give this house a sense of being again,” says Martinez of the process. “It was really refreshing, helping a young couple build this home into a place where they can start a new chapter in their lives.”

8/10/20 10:06 AM

Viewed from the entrance hall that’s illuminated by a Curtis Jeré brass pendant, the Kehinde Wiley painting Portrait of Garry Dabonne sits like a jewel nestled among the library’s dark millwork. “We want to create a sense of walking through an art gallery, where you’re guided through by different pieces hanging in each space,” says designer Eche Martinez, who was tasked to revive the personality and historical charm of this 1926 Presidio Heights home.

Taking advantage of the generous light, the designer used the central living space to highlight other works of art, like the vivid red Salustiano portrait and a Kate MccGwire feather sculpture enclosed in a glass case. A bold palette of black, white and gold provided a graphic counterpoint, starting with a pair of vintage Utrecht sofas, an Adam Hunter Tibetan wool-and-silk rug from the Rug Company, and a gold Matheny tiered light fixture by Delightfull.

LX_SF36_HOM_Martinez_12.indd 225

8/10/20 10:07 AM

For the main dining area, the designer collected a mix of new and vintage finds, like the 19th-century English mahogany dining table, Whisper chairs by CuldeSac for Bernhardt Design, and a collection of 1950s opalineglass-and-brass pendants by Bent Karlby. Below, the area rug depicting a map of Manhattan from Joseph Carini Carpets in New York City provides a sentimental reminder of the family’s old stomping grounds.

Featuring swaths of Calacatta gold marble, the existing refurbished kitchen that came with the home “was modern and bright but was not in tune with what we were trying to achieve,” explains Martinez. “It just felt too clinical.” The designer worked with builder Josh Grout to infuse more depth by re-staining the floors and base of the island in a deep, rich shade.

LX_SF36_HOM_Martinez_12.indd 227

8/10/20 10:07 AM

For even the most transitional spaces, like the top stair landing, “we wanted to make sure that we had some strong visual references, notes the designer. Paired with an antique Persian bench, the tangled line painting from the homeowners’ art collection became the perfect echo of the spiral staircase.

LX_SF36_HOM_Martinez_12.indd 228

8/10/20 10:31 AM

Though the library was newly remodeled, the designer wanted to “make it look like it’s been here forever.” He curated a blend of new and old finds, including a turn-of-the-century Persian Qashqai Kashkooli rug, a Michael Dawkins desk, a Roberto Lazzeroni Ginger swivel armchair, and a pair of 1950s suspended sconces by Maison Lunel.

Right: Each guest bedroom was inspired by “an imaginary guest we pictured staying there,” noted Martinez. The green room took on a distinctly gentlemanly air with Benjamin Moore’s Tarrytown Green adding depth to the arched walls. He carved out a reflective alcove with a Sheraton-style antique desk, a 1950s brass-and-walnut midcentury Viscount armchair by Dan Johnson, an Arteriors Celeste accent table, and a Caleb Zipperer armchair upholstered in Zoffany green velvet. Opposite: Martinez leaned on antiques and artwork to create the green guest bedroom’s debonair spirit, grounded by the client’s own mahogany Biedermeier bed and a painting by Scottish artist Katie O’Hagan. For storage, he added a French empire commode made circa 1840.

What does everyone need in their kitchen? Which new concepts are going to overtake residential design in the next year? Donalyn Hellar, the showroom manager of The Bath + Beyond, has the answers. “I think anyone should have a beautiful column wine preservation system,” she says. “As for my predictions about design changes, I think the pandemic will influence people in two ways. First, home offices will regain focus. Second, outdoor entertaining will be more important than ever. Indoor kitchens that seem to reach out through moving walls, and grills, sinks and beverage centers outdoors, will be preferable.” For those in the San Francisco area, finding it all will be a breeze. The Bath + Beyond’s 18,000-square-foot showroom has the finest local and international products in the bath, hardware, lighting and appliance industries.
