Cheers to a New Year What a difference a year makes. Quite literally, what a difference. At this time last year, as the weather took on that distinctive chill and thoughts were turning to holiday celebrations, the daily news reports were filled with news we didn’t want to hear. The days were filled with terrible stories, about very real people, going through some of their worst times. The morning routine included the daily case count report, and dire predictions from medical practitioners if we didn’t enforce further restrictions, and soon. Those predictions, unfortunately, rang true and by Christmas we were in full and hard lockdown here in Ontario. Most other places in Canada—and around the world—were in similar circumstances. A difficult place to find ourselves at the end of 2020, a year that was, by any measure, terrible. It was to be a holiday season we never imagined could be in those early days of the pandemic, when our naivete had us thinking the worst would be over in a few months. Headlines of “Christmas is cancelled” filled the news, and delivery of a vaccine that couldn’t come soon enough, just wasn’t soon enough. The worst of those days are now behind us, and I say that with slight hesitation—a twinge of reluctance—dare I tempt fate. This year looks like a normal (almost) holiday season, with plans for family get-togethers and outings with friends being added to the calendar. There are once again invitations arriving at the office, a refreshing change from the virtual-everything model of work we’ve endured the past 18 months. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: we should still be careful, cautious and take care to protect ourselves and others. The end of 2021 is in sight though, and I can’t wait to see it out the door. Cheers to 2022; a happier, healthier, better year for all. Health, happiness and good cheer to you and yours, this holiday season and for the new year!

LUXE magazinE canada winter 2022

As I Am writing this, I’m thinking back to the note I wrote for last year’s Holiday Issue. It seems so long ago that we were celebrating the holidays very differently. So much has happened in the last year, although we are not out of the woods yet. I believe it’s safe to say that this year will be a holiday season closest to our “normal” and that this year we can gather and partake in holiday festivities in person. Our lives are slowly but surely going in the direction of our “new normal.” We all celebrate this season differently and I hope this issue will inspire you to make this year’s festivities memorable and take time to appreciate your friends and family. We value you, our readers, and are grateful for all of our advertisers and partners for their loyalty over the last challenging year. We know we have so much to be grateful for. May your holiday season be the best it can be. From everyone at LUXE Magazine, we wish you a happy holiday season and a spectacular 2022!

excitement. For us, it’s the calendar’s most joyous time, one that finds us gathered en famille— and with trusted friends—around indulgently dressed tables that groan with imaginatively prepared gastronomy. Laughter and tears, typically speaking, drench the scene as we reflect on

what has been, and what (we hope) is still to come as a new year prepares to dawn. Ah, that glorious anticipation. But our party-planning prowess doesn’t stop at food and table-scapes. Dinner at Ryan McAllister Towers, you see, amounts to much more than the summonsing of Bacchanalian spirit: it’s an observation in the masterful art of cocktail making, each tincture deftly composed with skills akin to John Hamm on the set of Mad Men. Indeed, a mixed drink crafted at—or a Champagne coupe poured from—our heavily laden drinks station affords the opportunity to step back in time, each libation poured to conjure the essence of days gone by. And, of course we love our accoutrements: you know, all those gadgets and gizmos that transform the theatre of mixology into a veritable art form. Here are some festive gems to kick things off…

LUXE magazinE canada winter 2022

Halls It’s that magical time of year again: the festive season. Celebrations abound and with that, trimming your home in the season’s finest. Before you sprinkle everything with sparkle and gild all you see in gold, designers are leaning toward a fresher, simpler, au naturel approach to holiday trimming. Here is some fresh design inspiration for your seasonal décor this year.

The SeaSon of LighTS Gillian SeGal, principal and founder of Vancouver-based Gillian Segal Design, describes her personal style as “modern, eclectic glamour” and is known for always adding an element of the unexpected into her designs. Inspired by her travels, Segal loves blending old and new on projects for her residential interior

Right Swags of olive branches are draped down the staircase framing a striking modern pendant light by Lindsey Adelman and a vintage, ’70s-era console in the entryway.

design firm. Recently, Segal took on the décor of her own home and decided to keep the focus broad and add items she loved, regardless of their style. “I couldn’t commit to modern or traditional,” she says, “I wanted it to be a blend of both: a contemporary home with the warmth I feel from more traditional spaces, those traditional details.” “The room-to-move design is probably best seen at this time of year, when Hanukkah celebrations bring the family together—if more distanced this year than in times past,” says Segal.

A floral arrangement sprayed in silver and blue is lit by a chandelier by Vancouver artist Randy Zieber in the eating area.

“I grew up celebrating Christmas with my family, and I converted to Judaism after I met my husband,” she says. “When we started celebrating Hanukkah, I felt unsure how to make it feel festive—so I wanted to do my own interpretation of what it could look like.” Segal incorporates lots of natural greenery, along with customdesigned floral pieces to bring festive style to her home. “A big part of the story of Hanukkah was celebrating and using foods fried in oil, so there is a big focus on olive oil,” says Segal. “There was just enough oil for one night, yet it lasted eight.” To bring that tradition home, she places olive branches throughout the house, photo by JAniS nicoLAy

including in the garland that runs up the stairs. As it turns out, that olive-tree focus just happens to fit perfectly with the design of the home itself, that mossy green nodding to the olive-green powder room, the sage-green marble on the fireplace and the area rug in the main room. The dramatic floral arrangement over the fireplace was designed by Celsia Floral in Vancouver and spray-painted in silvers and blues for Hanukkah. winter 2022 LUXE magazinE canada

Here are some of tHe pair’s favourite tips to set tHe scene for tHe festive season. • Add vibrant colour and texture that can be found as close as your nearest market. Dried or fresh cranberries and seasonal fruit such as clementines, pomegranates and figs are a favourite, lending the nature to our homes that we’re missing outdoors at this time of year. • Fill in your tabletop centrepiece using pinecones and evergreen branches from your own backyard, paired with a string of sparkling lights or candles and some loose ornaments nestled in. Of course, you can find these items at markets and floral shops if you aren’t fortunate enough to be able to forage for them. “To create a table-scape start at the centre of the table and work your way out, alternating between sides and decorations. This ensures your tabletop is well balanced,” says Triandos. • Serving trays are a great way to make your festive decor mobile. Rather than creating a huge centrepiece, scale it down and decorate a serving tray that you can remove if you need to reclaim the space at mealtime. • Don’t forget to add real candles, they provide a warm and flickering glow that artificial lights can’t offer. Nestle groups of candles all in same colour throughout your home for a festive, yet tasteful, touch. Avoid candles with scents where food is being served, as their perfume can detract from the flavours of the food. • Go beyond the dining table and adorn side tables, bar cart, side board, fireplace mantel and windowsills with the same treatment for a continuous look.

A beautiful bowl or vessel that you use all year just needs filling with bright seasonal fruit for a naturally festive touch.

Time to Dress Up

CANADIAN DESIGNER STEVEN LEJAMBE’S FRILLY FROCKS ARE WHAT WE CRAVE FOR COCKTAIL PARTY SEASON by CHRISTIAN DARE

W

HILE MANY FEAR the oncoming cold weather season, here at LUXE we love to celebrate it. After all, chillier weather means the holidays are just around the corner. With all the festivities, filled with food and laughter, comes the desire to dress up. That’s right, the holiday season (or as my Gran would have called it, dress-up season) is here and we are ready to put on a cocktail

dress (or dare we say, gown) and dance the night away. But are you ready? After months of athleisure and working from home,

it’s time to put on that favourite dress that makes you feel sophisticated, fashion forward and sexy. You know the one… No? Then it’s time to pick up a new outfit, perhaps even a custom piece from Canadian designer Steven Lejambe. Lejambe is a Toronto-based evening wear designer who specializes in elegant silhouettes with unique and romantic details. After years of working under some of Toronto’s most celebrated bridal and evening wear designers, Lejambe launched his own label to create one-of-a-kind garments that are made for women who want to feel modern and current yet classically elegant. We sat down with Lejambe to learn more about his process and his brand.

Q&A What would you call the Steven Lejambe aesthetic or brand? What is your brand DNA? SL: The Steven Lejambe aesthetic in a nutshell is ‘classic with a twist’. I love to create pieces that are wearable and elegant but with special details and unexpected fabrics that make them truly unique. You will see a lot of inspiration from ’40s and ’50s fashion, but always through a contemporary lens.

Does Steven Lejambe have a signature look or silhouette? SL: I would say our large tulle ruffle pieces are definitely a “Aviva,” from the 2021 bridal collection.

signature and recognizable style. They are made of strips of tulle gathered and individually sewn to create a totally overthe-top, fluffy cloud-like finish.

What is the biggest challenge when designing evening wear?

“Ramona,” from the 2021 bridal collection.

Steven Lejambe photographed with television presenter Nicole Servinis wearing his “Sky” three-tier tulle ruffle gown for the 2021 Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards photo session.

How do you make it feel modern and wearable? SL: I think one of the biggest challenges is that sometimes I want to make the gowns so outrageous and completely over-the-top

PhoTo by GeoRGe PImeNTeL (PoRTRAIT oF STeveN LejAmbe)

but I have to reel it in to make sure that they are wearable. In terms of keeping things modern, I take a lot of inspiration from historical fashion, so it is always a fun project to design chic, modern garments with hints of classic silhouettes and details.

Many designers have an ideal woman or figure that inspires them, do you have a particular woman that inspires you and your brand? SL: Any fearless woman that isn’t afraid to stand out with her fashion. We celebrate her. While Steven Lejambe presents a regular collection each season (made up of several ready-made beautiful cocktail dresses and gowns), more and more women have been requesting custom pieces. Perhaps it is a sign of the times; a new appreciation for locally-made and unique hand-made pieces that has caused this resurgence in custom garments. Or perhaps, it’s just because we all want to feel special (and completely unique) when we purchase a gown. winter 2022 LUXE magazinE canada

So, Steven, how do you approach a custom dress or gown with

“Carole,” from the 2021 bridal collection.

a client? SL: It is true, I create a lot of made-to-order and custom pieces which is so great because it allows folks to customize their style, colour and sizing for a totally unique finish. I know the process of having a custom garment made can seem overwhelming but it’s actually quite simple. It starts with a consultation where fabrics and styles are discussed, then a fitting to ensure a perfect fit and finally after alterations, one last try on and pick up.

And I would assume this means you can dress almost any woman of any size with this approach...how do you want to make women feel when they put on your custom piece? SL: Yes, having a custom piece made is so special because not only do you end up with a very special garment, but it is made perfectly to your measurements and there are no size or style restrictions. I want everyone that puts on a Steven Lejambe piece to feel sexy, elegant, empowered and fabulous, knowing they are wearing a truly unique and one-of-a-kind dress that is Canadian-designed and made. I love creating fresh new pieces for clients, but I’m also always so happy when given unlimited options, people still choose my pieces that I have already designed.

Your label has been seen on the red carpet and has become the new darling label for celebrities like Alessia Cara, Laura Vandervoort, Amanda Parris, and Tessa Virtu. Do you have a favourite celebrity that you have dressed? SL: I remember starting my brand and dreaming of seeing my dresses on a red carpet, and when it finally happened it truly was such a proud moment. I don’t know if I have one

favourite person but as a huge fan of Drag Race (and of course Canada’s Drag Race), it was so special seeing my dresses on some of the amazing queens on the show (both Priyanka and Tynomi Banks).

As the world changes at a frantic pace, what do you think the role of fashion is? Do you think ‘fancy’ dressing is going out of fashion? Or do we need it more than ever? SL: I think that fancy dress is here to stay! After spending so long not having the option to dress up, I feel that people are

starting to get excited about fashion again. It’s time to cast aside the sweatpants and put on that cute cocktail dress and enjoy ourselves.

Finally, what’s next for Steven Lejambe? SL: Up next, I’m adding more ready-to-wear selections to our existing gown options which I am excited about! We are currently working on a new collection called “Simple Silks” that is a collection of 100 per cent silk dresses in classic silhouettes with special details that are perfect for dinners, weddings and events.

The kind of place where you can relax and reset, untouched by crowds and mass market tourism. The twin island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis with its verdant green topography, untouched coastlines and authentic beach vibe is one of those places, but it also doesn’t skimp on luxury. Maui is an island of microclimates, from lush remote valleys to vast fields of pineapple stalks stretching upwards for the warmth of the sun. And touring these valleys, hillsides and small farms is considered a very island-affirmative approach to the food on your plates. Beyond the shimmering beaches, at the cooler elevations of “Upcountry Maui” there are pineapple fields where crops are still planted and harvested by hand, a distillery crafting authentic Hawaiian brand spirits, a family-run goat dairy where visitors can take

a hand at milking chores, and a lavender farm that benefits from the “natural misting” of being at the elevation of the cloud line. I happily spent several afternoons wandering from one set of flavours to the next; listening to proud creators wax poetic about the sweetness of yellow pineapples or an herb-kissed chèvre that was served during the inauguration festivities for President Obama. As the sun set on another spectacular Maui day, I found my way back to the beachfront luxury of the Grand Wailea. I opened my dinnertime menu for just a moment to discover that the fresh tastes of my afternoon had followed me back and into the offerings on the pages. Surrender seemed, once again, like the prudent choice. Closing the menu, I had just one happy thought: Let’s take my appetite for a ride.

In a mIxIng bowl, or a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar on high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add 2 of the eggs along with the rum (if using) and both extracts and beat well to combine, about 1 minute. In a seParate bowl, whisk together both flours and the salt. Add this to the butter mixture, stirring just until combined. Unroll 1 sheet of the pastry and, using a 9-inch cake pan as a guide, cut out a 9-inch circle and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the other sheet of pastry but set this one aside. Place the jam in the centre of the pastry on the baking sheet and spread it into an even layer, leaving about a 1-inch border all the way around. Top the jam with the almond mixture and spread that into an even layer too. The jam might get pushed out a little further into that 1-inch border but that’s okay. Just try to keep as much of a border as possible. Press the whole almond into the almond mixture somewhere close to the edge, but avoid the bare border. In a small bowl, beat the remaining egg with 2 teaspoons of water to make an egg wash. Brush the border “If you live in or are visiting Quebec or France during the

Spiced Clementine Bourbon Sour “Sours are by far my favourite cocktail. The puckering flavour of freshly squeezed lemon juice just seems to invite sip after sip, while the winter-inspired additions of sweet clementine and spicy cloves and the drama of burning sage make this a great drink to kick off a cozy dinner for a couple or a crowd.” 4 oz bourbon 1½ oz clementine juice 2 oz lemon juice ¾ oz pure maple syrup ¾ oz pasteurized egg white Ground cloves 5 sage leaves, divided 1½ cups ice cubes Clementine segments, for garnish Ground or whole cloves, for garnish

Add the bourbon, clementine and lemon juices, maple syrup, egg white, and a small pinch of ground cloves to a cocktail shaker and shake vigourously for 10 seconds to incorporate the egg white. Add the ice cubes to the shaker, then, using a kitchen torch or a lighter, char 3 of the sage leaves until they are smoking and hold a smolder. Immediately place the smoking sage leaves in the shaker, seal it up, and shake vigourously for 20 to 25 seconds to chill the cocktail and froth up the egg white. StrAin the cocktail into Champagne coupes or lowball glasses and garnish each with a freshly charred sage leaf, a clementine segment, and some cloves. note: For extra clementine flavour, rub a piece of clementine peel around the rim of each glass before pouring in the cocktail. Preheat your oven to 400°F and grease a 10-inch springform pan with cooking spray. Using two overlapping pieces of parchment paper, line the greased pan by pressing the parchment along the bottom of the pan and haphazardly up the sides, leaving any crinkles and folds and making sure the parchment reaches at least 2 inches above the rim of the pan. Place the pan on a baking sheet and set aside. For the cheesecake, place the cream cheese, sugar, salt, and nutmeg in a large bowl, or a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, and beat on medium speed until smooth, about 2 minutes, scraping the bowl down at least three times. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well and scraping down the bowl between each addition. Add the cream, eggnog, rum, and vanilla. Mix on low speed just until combined. remove the bowl from its stand and sift the flour over top. Reattach the bowl and continue to beat on low speed just to incorporate, about 30 seconds, scraping down the bowl halfway through. The folks at LUXE asked me to put together my annual list of

drinks to enjoy over the holidays. In the past, I’ve given you lists of red and white wines, sparkling wines, maybe even a few dessert wines along the way (although there never seems to be enough of those); but this year I’ve added another wrinkle to my annual list. But first my philosophy behind the addition: at holiday time, I think the wine flows too freely and goes down too fast, not really allowing us to linger with friends and family—so this year I’ve added the ultimate

LuiGi BOsca 2018 MaLBEc VErdE FiELd BLEnd Finca LOs nOBLEs

$59.95, Argentina; LCBO 20328 ★★★★ This is one of those wines that really grows on you... the more you sip the more you’re going to love it. It also develops over the course of a few hours into something “wow.” Starts out smooth, supple and subtle, it has a little of a lot, but not too much of anything: dark fruit, pepper, mocha, charcoal, floral with a blueberryesque finish reminiscent of dark chocolate covered wild blueberries. And, it lingers an extra-long time. Give it five years in the cellar before drinking or, if drinking now, decant. 56

So, without further ado, head out to your local LCBO or wherever you’re buying your bottles these days, gather together with the ones

year to say the least.

M chapOuTiEr 2019 BELLEruchE cOTEs du rhOnE

$16.70, France; LCBO 17779 ★★★★ For an under $20 bottle this delivers on so many levels. Dark fruit and floral notes hit the nose, then repeat on the palate, while adding in white pepper, mocha, black cherry, blackberry and a layered finish that shows nice depth and age-ability, but it’s also worth drinking right now.

you love, give them a big hug, pour a glass or two, light the fire and let’s linger a little bit longer together this year. Cheers. These bottles have been scored on a rating system of one to five stars. ★★★★★ = Outstanding ★★★★ = Excellent ★★★★ = Very Good ★★★ = Good + Wines with a little bit extra.

WakEFiELd 2019 JaraMan shiraz

$24.95, Australia; LCBO 377036 ★★★★ + This is one of those tasty wines that just keeps getting better the more you sip it. Plenty of plum, blackberry, cassis and white pepper upfront on the nose which then repeats full-force on the palate, plus it’s super-juicy. The more you sip the more the pepper begins to materialize on the palate, and while the fruit stays constant and concentrated that pepper note balances the fruit along with some silky tannins. The finish is also long and luxurious.

pEarcE prudhOMME 2020 cinsauLT / syrah

$19.95, South Africa; Nicolas Pearce Wines ★★★★ This wine is from two Canadian gents who got together to create wines from their favourite regions—one is an agent, the other a sommelier (sounds like the start of a sitcom). This offering is from South Africa. Here they’ve created a pseudoRhone Valley blend of cinsault and syrah: black and red currants, red berries and black pepper all play a role with the addition of black plum and mocha. Nice texture, mouthfeel and tannin structure. Easily sip-able or paired with a simple dinner.

Cave Spring CellarS nv BlanC de BlanCS

$29.95, Ontario; LCBO 213983 ★★★★ + This wine spends about three years in the bottle on lees, and always has killer acidity with green apple, lemon, lime, touches of pear and a great mineral hit on the finish. You really can’t go wrong with this one. It’s a winner year after year.

nyarai CellarS 2020 Folklore Sparkling

$22.95, Ontario; online at www.nyaraicellars.ca ★★★ + Steve Byfield—winemaker and owner—of this virtual winery, has another winner with his second sparkling wine. This fruit-forward number is pretty with notes of pear and floral, plus it has a biscotti/yeasty/minerality character. There’s a pleasant hit of sweetness on the mid-palate, but all is forgotten come the finish when it turns dry. Simple and satisfying.

antHoniJ rupert 2013 l’orMarinS BlanC de BlanCS

$24.95, South Africa; LCBO 15681 ★★★★ + This 100 per cent chardonnay sparkling wine from South Africa is a delight for the senses, especially for those who dig on sparkling wine with a little age on it. Twenty per cent of the wine is barrel-fermented, then it’s bottled for its secondary fermentation, which takes four years. It then rests a further eight months under cork. The results are a bubble with a richness in the mouth and notes of biscuit and baked apple plus a subtle creamy vanilla finish—all backed with a delightful acid punch. A sparkling wine-lovers delight at a very good price.

CaBot trail Maple CreaM

$30.95, Quebec; LCBO 462424 ★★★★ This is one of those cream liqueurs that will have you wanting more—but not too much more— because while it’s sweet and totally delectable, it might just cause sugar shock. Look, imagine if Werther’s candy, maple sugar and butter tarts had a liquid baby: it’s delicious, tasty and may be a nice addition to your morning coffee or a bedtime treat.

HigH river Canadian WHiSky

$32.95, Ontario; LCBO 481366 ★★★★ On the bottle there’s a notation about this being “recipe number 9108” and bottled in Kentucky —yet it’s a Canadian whisky—go figure. That does not stop it from being smooth and silky with notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice plus a lovely richness across the tongue. This one’s a “no mixin’ just sippin’” kind of whisky.

alvear 2017 pedro XiMenez de anada

$24.95 ($375mL), Spain; LCBO 499152 ★★★★ This grape is usually used in sweet sherries, this time it’s a straight-on dessert wine: thick and mouth-filling but with great balancing acidity. Notes of toffee, candied pecans, floral, grilled peaches and so much more. Almost chewy in the mouth—this is one really tasty dessert all on its own.

Henry oF pelHaM 2010 Cuvee CatHarine Centenary BlanC de BlanC

$124.95, Ontario; winery ★★★★ This special bottling is 100 per cent estate chardonnay (20 per cent barrel fermented) that’s spent 100 months on lees in bottle. That’s eight and one-third years in bottle alone. The results are a beautifullyaged chardonnay with bubbles galore plus aromas of sour dough, bread crust and oyster shells. On the palate lots of green apple flavours join saltyminerality, subtle oak and good acidity. This is a real “banger,” as the kids say.

tHe glenlivet CariBBean reServe Single Malt SCotCH

1792 Single Barrel kentuCky StraigHt BourBon WHiSky

$61.55, Kentucky; LCBO 496729 ★★★★ This hard-to-get-your-handson bourbon is named after the date Kentucky joined the union we now call the United States. Toffee, smoke, vanilla, and white peach pit all make an appearance with a lasting finish and a smooth burn on the throat. It’s pretty, peachy and floral—it also goes down real easy.

$59.80, Scotland; LCBO 21309 ★★★★ + Say what you want, but I still have not found “my Scotch” ...until now. Silky smooth— probably because of the rum barrel addition the whisky sat in—with vanilla, golden delicious apple, tropical fruit, including guava, mango skin and passionfruit. These are just some crazy notes to find in Scotch and are quite unexpected, but quite welcome. I think you’re going to like it.

JaMeSon BlaCk Barrel

$49.95, Ireland; LCBO 292615 ★★★★ After my Irish whiskey adventure LUXE published online this past summer, you knew one would show up on my Christmas list: clean and smooth with notes of vanilla, peach and tropical fruits. It fills the mouth with flavour and forgoes the burn for a nice, well-rounded woodsy finish.

Canadian Opera COmpany tO reOpen with madama Butterfly For the first time in nearly two years, the curtain rises for a live Canadian Opera Company (COC) audience with Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Madama Butterfly tells the coming of age story of Cio-Cio-San, a young geisha in Nagasaki. When her life collides with the older American naval officer Pinkerton, devastating consequences ensue, giving rise to one of Puccini’s most powerful and unforgettable operas. Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura makes her COC debut in the iconic title role, opposite American tenor Stephen Costello who returns to the COC in the role of Pinkerton. Performances begin February 4, 2022; www.coc.ca for subscription or single ticket sales.

the Shaw FeStival is marking the holiday season with a pair of seasonal shows: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and the Irving Berlin musical Holiday Inn. The annual reminder of what Christmas is really about, the classic tale of A Christmas Carol, will be presented at the Royal George Theatre, directed by Molly Atkinson. Based on the Universal Pictures film, Holiday Inn features some of the greatest Irving Berlin songs—including “Cheek to Cheek,” “Easter Parade” and “White Christmas”—brought to life on stage. Both shows continue until December 23, for ticket information visit www.shawfest.com

LeopoLdstadt is the Olivier Award-winning new work by Tom Stoppard that opened to critical acclaim and sold out houses in early 2020 in London’s West End. Now, Stoppard’s show will make its North American debut at Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Leopoldstadt was the old, crowded Jewish quarter of Vienna. But Hermann Merz, a Jewish manufacturer married to Catholic Gretl, has moved up in the world. Gathered in the Merz apartment in a fashionable part of the city, Hermann’s extended family are at the heart of Tom Stoppard’s epic yet intimate drama. By the time we have taken leave of them, Austria has passed through the convulsions of war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Draney is a night owl, though early days in the studio are productive. If she is working at night, she jokes, it’s because there is a deadline. Space is something she relates to, linking the feeling to her recent thoughts of Tanya Lukin Linklater, a Native American artist-choreographer. “Her work and her writing are like poetry, and meaningful, with lots of space. And I think that space is something I relate to.” There are different kinds of space on the canvas in different paintings, Draney explains. “Sometimes it’s a bare canvas in which case it seems like I couldn’t say any more, I couldn’t be certain of more—so there’s a mystery there. But other times I’ve painted over something in a canvas colour so that it’s erased. That reads fully differently. It’s like a secret... like something I have concealed from the viewer.” Draney’s process comes from her journals, which contain drawings, collages and personal writing. They remain important too, she explains, as a private space that no one sees. Many artists who deal with imagery or figures will have a hoard of images somewhere. Draney’s is filled with her

grandmother’s photos, her own and also images she borrows as ideas. Once she steps up, she immediately “goes with the brush.” This keeps the canvas honest. “That’s important because you could (mess) up, and when you do, you have to correct it and figure it out on the canvas and that is something you offer to the viewer—so they can have empathy with the artist’s hand, as Ben Reeves would say, and they can appreciate what you had to do to get to what we’re looking at.” winter 2022 LUXE magazinE canada

Anyone who’s pAssionAte About whAt they do will likely AlwAys hAve doubts About whether or not they’re doing the right thing. —brenda draney The very struggle to get that final image, she explains, is “part of the art, not just part of the process. I do think when Ben Reeves talks about empathy with the artist’s hand it really resonates for me.” Something she feels that’s lost on graphic reproductions. Ultimately, she hopes that whether someone lives in northern Alberta or the city, they could look at her work and “it would be something they could understand; it would resonate.” Regardless of where someone might live, everyone can understand complex relationships. “I don’t want you to have gone to art school to understand what I’m about,” she states. “The nature of relationships, the moment before or after something changes you… that has happened to everybody. Everybody knows those profound moments, those relationships that are difficult or complex.” Anyone who’s passionate about what they do will likely always have doubts about whether or not they’re doing the right thing. Draney “absolutely” felt pressure from herself. Holdout, 36”x48” oil on canvas 2012.

But, in the moments when she thought of stopping, there was always something that kept her going. What kept her going was receiving validation. “All these moments, it’s not about the prize, it’s about the validation; somebody saying ‘what you’re working on is worthwhile, it’s worth it to keep trying, to keep investigating.’”
