In the literal sense, transportation can be simply a means to get from one point to the next. But it’s also a great way to explore some of the most exciting things Scottsdale has to offer. Here are six traditional and non-traditional ways to get around! Number One TAKE A RIDE

JoyRidesAZ Scottsdale Tours provides open-air vehicle transportation in Old Town and beyond, as well as a variety of guided experiences ranging from wine-tasting and history tours to an introduction to Old Town’s best Instagram walls. And if you like a good mystery, Puzzle Rides combines the fun of a treasure hunt with the challenge of an escape room on their 75-minute adventures through Old Town.

Number Four PEDAL & PARTY

Looking for a fun way to get around with a handful of friends and family? Take a pub crawl on the Arizona Party Bike! This 15-passenger merrymaking machine cruises around Old Town on pedal power (yours), making stops at popular local bars and pubs.

Number Two MASTER THE “LEAN”

For the most excitement you can have standing up, try a Segway tour! It might take a few minutes to master the lean – the movement that makes these two-wheeled fun machines go – but anyone can do it under the guidance of Segway of Scottsdale’s experts. They’ll have you rolling through Old Town in no time.

Number Three RENT AN E-BIKE

As in electric bike! Pedego Scottsdale, located in the heart of Old Town, rents battery-powered bikes that let you do as much – or as little – pedaling as you’d like while you explore the local galleries, restaurants, shops and museums. Over at Phat Rides USA, you can rent electric bikes as well as Phat electric scooters for an eco-friendly city tour.

Number Five TAKE TO THE SKIES

Tours by helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft are a great way to broaden your Arizona horizons and still be back in Scottsdale in time for dinner! Check out the combo tour options that combine flights, Jeep tours – even river rafting on the mighty Colorado River. Contact Scottsdale’s professional air tour operators and get ready to fly! See listings on pgs. 127-128

Number Six LET THE EXPERTS DRIVE

Scottsdale’s ground transportation providers offer luxury sedan and limousine transportation throughout the city. In addition to airport pick-up and point-to-point transportation, they’re also the perfect choice for pub crawls, wine tours and nights on the town. See listings on pg. 131 ExperienceScottsdale.com

FLY HIGH

SADDLE UP

In a landscape as panoramic as the Sonoran Desert, there’s no better way to soak it all in than on a hot air balloon flight. You’ll drift along with the breeze as your pilot guides the balloon high into the air for horizon-to-horizon scenic views or dips close to the ground for a glimpse of wildlife and native plants. Every ride ends with a champagne toast, and many include a catered breakfast in the desert.

Cowboy up and enjoy the company of a gentle horse as you ride through rolling mountain foothills and lush desert washes. MacDonald’s Ranch welcomes riders of all skill levels and also offers hay wagon and stagecoach rides, a petting zoo and pony rides for kiddos. For experienced riders looking for more of a challenge, Windwalker Expeditions offers private excursions through the desert wilderness.

FOUR

MAKE A SPLASH Water sports in the desert? Absolutely! There are eight lakes and rivers within a 60-minute drive of Old Town Scottsdale, which means you’re never far from fishing, kayaking, river rafting, tubing, paddle boarding and boat tours. If you find yourself on the Salt River, be sure to keep your eyes open for the band of majestic wild horses that live in the area.

SONORAN desert life

Sonoran Desert influences can be found in virtually every aspect of life in Scottsdale, from recreation and architecture to the use of indigenous ingredients in our cuisine, spa treatments and skin care products. Check out all the ways you can experience the Sonoran Desert – even if there isn’t a saguaro in sight!

>>> DESERT ARCHITECTURE The rugged beauty of the Sonoran Desert has inspired generations of visionary architects who have left their mark on Scottsdale. From the earthen structures of Paolo Soleri’s Cosanti and the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West (pictured) to urban gems like the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art by Will Bruder and Hotel Valley Ho, originally designed by Edward L. Varney, you’ll find innovative, desert-inspired architecture at every turn.

TARGET-STYLE GOLF The Sonoran Desert’s rolling foothills are the perfect backdrop for target-style golf. These thrilling course layouts use natural features as hazards to create forced carries over swaths of native vegetation and boulder formations to reach the island-style greens. Scottsdale is home to several bucket-list desert golf courses, including Troon North, TPC Scottsdale, Grayhawk (pictured), Boulders Club and We-Ko-Pa.

SONORAN-INSPIRED SPA TREATMENTS For centuries, Native American cultures have used indigenous Sonoran Desert botanicals for their healing properties. Today, you’ll find these same ingredients used in a variety of soothing spa treatments. Here are five to try: The Spa at the Boulders’ Signature Clay Wrap is inspired by the Native American belief that the turquoise stone carries vibrations of protection, self-confidence and positive energy. After an exfoliation using revitalizing desert salts, a wrap of warm turquoise clay purifies and refines your skin. A creamy scrub made with desert jojoba exfoliates your skin while prickly pear cactus gel soothes and hydrates in the Moisture Bound Body Wrap at Well & Being Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (pictured). The River Stone & Birchwood Massage at the Spa at Talking Stick Resort uses warmed stones from the nearby Salt River and native wild chaparral oil to melt away stress and tension. As part of the Spa at Camelback Inn’s Adobe Clay Purification treatment, a soft cactus-fiber cloth is used in the shower to remove the clay. This is followed by a soothing application of warmed juniper and sage oils. And, just for the guys – Boss Lady Stacey’s signature “What a Prick” treatment at We Do Men spa uses REDMethod products, which are chock-full of natural desert goodness, including blue agave leaf extract, yucca extract and soothing aloe vera.

sonoran desert life

LOCAL FLAVORS Scottsdale’s chefs love to take advantage of the region’s five robust growing seasons, year-round farmers’ markets and indigenous Sonoran Desert ingredients. Don’t miss these locally inspired treats: At J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician, the Chopped Salad features McClendon’s Select Arizona pecans tossed with frisée, arugula, avocado and blue cheese. The Two Wash Ranch Jerk Chicken served at Mountain Shadows’ Hearth ’61 is sourced from – you guessed it – Two Wash Ranch in nearby New River, Arizona. James Beard Award-winning chef Charleen Badman of Old Town’s FnB (pictured) incorporates grains and vegetables used for centuries by the area’s Native American tribes in her dishes. Gertrude’s at Desert Botanical Garden also is no stranger to indigenous ancient grains, tepary beans and I’itoi onions. Their seasonally inspired cooking combines classic techniques with flavors from Native America and around the globe.

SKIN SAVERS! Arizona Sun is a family-owned Scottsdale company whose products feature indigenous Southwest ingredients like sage, wild roses, cactus extracts and jojoba. Local favorites include Arizona Sun’s Water-Resistant SPF 30 Sunscreen, soothing Sunburn Relief gel and nourishing moisturizer.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT’S TALIESIN WEST

SCOTTSDALE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright was so captivated by the Sonoran Desert’s natural beauty and sunny climate that he chose Scottsdale as the location for his winter home and architectural school, Taliesin West. Tours at this UNESCO Heritage Site offer an insider’s look into Wright’s designs and his ability to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor spaces.

SMoCA, an ingenious renovation of an old movie theater by architect Will Bruder, celebrates the modern art, architecture and design of our time through thought-provoking changing exhibitions. The museum also is home to Knight Rise (pictured), a public “skyspace” by acclaimed artist James Turrell (one of only a handful in the world!).

OLD TOWN SCOTTSDALE Take one look at Old Town Scottsdale and it’s easy to see what makes the vibrant heart of our city so original. Nestled within nine walkable neighborhoods you’ll find a unique collection of boutiques, restaurants, galleries and nightclubs, as well as public art installations, worldclass museums and historic sites from the late 1880s. SPACIOUS SUITES: EMBASSY SUITES BY HILTON SCOTTSDALE RESORT

The Phoenician recently completed a massive, resort-wide renovation, that included all guestrooms, a new worldclass spa, The Phoenician Tavern and an 18-hole golf course completely redesigned by local Scottsdale architect Phil Smith.

If golf is on your itinerary, this all-suite property adjacent to the TPC Scottsdale is a great choice. The property boasts a large swimming pool and sports bar-style dining at AGAVE Southwest Bar & Grill.

This recently renovated all-suite resort on the northern edge of Old Town Scottsdale puts you within easy reach of all the area’s best courses as well as abundant options for dining, shopping and nightlife. ExperienceScottsdale.com

BEST WAYS TO PLAY Top Courses for Beginners

Large greens and an easier pace of play make the TPC Scottsdale Champions course a local favorite.

Talking Stick’s Piipaash course cuts new players a break with modestly crowned greens and limited angles on the fairways.

Papago Golf Course offers wide, treelined fairways and a water hazard in play on only one hole.

Better Bring Your A-Game

Known for their stunning views and challenging (yet fair) play, the courses at Troon North are a must-do.

Grayhawk’s Raptor Course is known for massive bunkers that guard the greens where 3-putts are not uncommon.

Pat yourself on the back if you make par on the Cholla Course’s 605-yard, downhill eighth at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club.

CUTINO SAUCE CO. For Jacob Cutino, the rise to hot sauce fame began with his stepfather’s secret recipe for a killer habanero sauce. Through persistence and experimentation, Cutino created his own version of the secret sauce, which he sold in small batches at local farmers markets and shops under the name Homeboy’s Hot Sauce. In 2017, Cutino linked up with local pizza guru Chris Bianco and the resulting rebrand gave birth to Cutino Sauce Co., a collection of tongue-tingling sauces that range from the sweet-heat of Jalapeño and smokiness of Chipotle all the way up the Kelvin scale to the fiery, limited-quantity Ghost Sauce. Find Cutino Sauce Co. creations in popular Scottsdale shops and restaurants, including Sphinx Date Co. Palm & Pantry, Citizen Public House, LON’s, Chula Seafood and the Desert Botanical Garden, as well as all Arizona Whole Foods locations.

EAT THE ORIGINAL PANCAKE HOUSE A Scottsdale landmark since 1988, The Original Pancake House dishes up platefuls of breakfast magic on the daily. Owner Ron “The Pancake Man” Horton makes sure his commitment to quality and attention to detail are carried through every dish, from fluffy Dutch Baby pancakes and cinnamon-sugar glazed Apple Pancakes to Ron’s Special Southwest Eggs – scrambled eggs with caramelized onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, cheese and OPH’s special seasoning.

LO-LO’S CHICKEN & WAFFLES If authentic soul food cooked with a whole lot of love is what you crave, head straight for Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles. Founder Larry “Lo-Lo” White grew up working beside his grandmother at the Valley’s famous Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Café. Over the years, White perfected his own recipes, including his crispy fried chicken and fluffy waffles, and eventually opened his namesake restaurant. Today, Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles has four Valley locations, including one in Scottsdale, where you can dig into specialties like Fried Green Tomatoes, Uncle Brotha’s Shrimp and Grits, Yo Mamma’s Biscuits & Gravy and, of course, White’s famous fried chicken and waffles. SUGARJAM THE SOUTHERN KITCHEN Savory or sweet? At SugarJam The Southern Kitchen, you don’t have to choose! Owner Dana Dumas’ lunch and supper menus are filled with savory down-home delights like Fried Catfish Po’boys, Seafood Gumbo Mac ’n Cheese, and her award-winning Pork ’n Jack Burger. But whatever you do, save room for dessert. SugarJam’s bakery is a sweet-lover’s paradise, filled with melt-inyour-mouth cookies and sugar-cookie sandwiches, decadent pies and cupcakes, and weekend-only treats like scones, muffins and brownie bars. Enjoy them at the restaurant and take some home for later – you’ll be glad you did!

SEAFOOD in the

DESERT The closest ocean is 223 miles from Scottsdale, but that hasn’t stopped our local chefs and restaurateurs from cultivating a truly inspiring seafood haven in Arizona. From daily trips to the California coast and shipments of fresh fish flown in each day from all around the world to executive chefs taking overnight trips to Alaska to bring back the daily catch, seafood in the desert is no longer a rarity. To get you started on your culinary explorations, we’ve reeled in a handful of our favorite restaurants to share. And for those of you who are more turf than surf, don’t worry – there are plenty of options on the menu for you as well!

CHULA SEAFOOD

OCEAN 44 The most recent endeavor from the founders of the Valley’s Steak 44 and Dominick’s Steakhouse, Ocean 44 is seafood reinvented. This vibrant, upscale restaurant offers an extensive raw bar and decadent dishes made with the highest-quality sustainable fresh seafood from around the world. Order the Dungeness Crab Cocktail, served with a trio of sauces including the Atomic Horseradish (house-make cocktail sauce and creamy mustard), followed by the Chilean Sea Bass. For landlubbers, choose the cooked-to-order Domestic Wagyu Filet or the tender Tomahawk Berkshire Pork Chops served bone-in.

CHULA SEAFOOD Chula Seafood Market is a family-owned fishmonger with a simple promise: They sell the freshest seafood because they catch it themselves. It all starts off the coast of San Diego, where the Heflin family operates their own custom-built commercial fishing boat, specializing in harpoon-caught swordfish and other fruits of the California Pacific. After selling to restaurants for years, the family decided to get back to its Arizona roots by opening a small storefront in South Scottsdale. Swing by and savor made-to-order dishes such as Hawaiian-style poke, seafood salads and tuna sandwiches. ExperienceScottsdale.com

SHINBAY OMAKASE ROOM Shinbay is Arizona’s first and only Omakase restaurant led by visionary Chef Shinji Kurita. Omakase is a Japanese phrase which translates to “I’ll leave it up to you.” Guests entrust themselves to the chef, placing the choice of ingredients and presentation in his capable hands. The experience is approximately two hours, during which you are presented with six to seven courses, or around 15 plates total. Complementing the delicious cuisine is Shinbay itself, an intimate space that lends itself to a fully immersive culinary journey and fosters personal connection between guests and the chef.

SUSHI ROKU At this sleek restaurant tucked away inside the W Scottsdale Hotel, you’ll find an extensive selection of classic and innovative Asian, Latin American and European ingredients that are expertly crafted into edible works of art. The menu is organized into categories – garden, sea and farm – ensuring this unique culinary experience can be enjoyed by all. Seafood lovers will want to start with the Octopus Crudo (infused with yuzu, lemon and sea salt) followed by the Grilled Salmon with wasabi yuzu crème fraiche, blood orange and fennel. For the farm focused, check out the Beef Ribeye Wrapped Asparagus and Ji-Dori Free Range Chicken, which is cooked over Japanese Bincho charcoal and adorned with a teriyaki glaze.

TORO LATIN RESTAURANT & RUM BAR Leaning into the Latin American tradition of treating food as an event rather than just a meal, Toro Latin Restaurant & Rum Bar will take you on a Pan-Latin culinary adventure with a side of tiki cocktails. Combining South American and Chinese-Peruvian flavor profiles, the menu is built for sharing and mirrors the restaurant’s upbeat energy. Start with the signature “suviche” bar, inspired by a blend of Asian sushi and Latin ceviche, where each dish is brimming with the freshest seafood and veggies swimming in an aji amarillo citrus broth. For your entrée, share the Scallop & Pork Belly, Brazilian Picanha Steak or Mexican Campfire Style Salmon.

sip & savor WINE TERMINOLOGY ACIDITY The tartness or crispness of a wine. BALANCED When a wine’s alcohol, acidity, sugars and tannins are all working in harmony and no single element overwhelms the others. BODY This refers to the wine’s weight on your palate, typically light, medium or full. MOUTHFEEL How does the wine feel in your mouth – silky, smooth, chewy, complex? LEGS The drops or streaks that stick to the inside of the glass after swirling or sipping. TANNINS Tannins are a product of the grape’s seeds and skins. Tannins taste astringent or chalky and add body to the wine.

SIP & SWISH

SAVOR

You can tell a lot about a wine simply by its appearance. Typically, the darker the color, the more full-bodied the wine.

A swirl aerates the wine and releases the aromatic components that make up the complexity of its flavor.

The wine’s aroma (fruit, herb, flower aromas) and bouquet (spice, yeast, nut aromas) provide the first hint of its flavor profile.

Let the wine dance over your taste buds to release its complex flavors so that all your senses can take them in.

Enjoy the wine’s finish – the last flavors that linger on your palate after you swallow.

Secret & Not-So-Secret

SPEAKEASIES A

s a response to Prohibition, speakeasies became a staple of the Roaring Twenties offering people a place to let loose and covertly enjoy newly illegal alcohol. More than a century later, these once-secret, underground establishments have resurfaced and taken the industry by storm. Lucky for us, the speakeasy trend has fully infused into Scottsdale’s nightlife scene, and they are a bit easier to find these days – for the most part!

KAZIMIERZ WINE & WHISKEY BAR

ExperienceScottsdale.com

KAZIMIERZ WINE & WHISKEY BAR While not hidden, Kazimierz is everything speakeasy in spirit. Thick, dark-green curtains block out most of the outside light, allowing the intimate lounge to be lit mostly by candlelight. A mismatched assortment of candleholders lining the bar top give off a soft glow as live acoustic music fills the space. Whiskey, wine and cocktails fill the menu along with light fare perfect for sharing. In addition to the creative and classic cocktails that are shaken, stirred and poured to perfection, guest mixologists are known to bring unique and off-menu items to guests. STRAIGHT UP WHISKEY BAR AT HOTEL ADELINE In true speakeasy fashion, you need to score the day’s password and find the hidden entrance to get into Hotel Adeline’s Straight Up Whisky Bar. Once you find the secret door, ring the bartender to be let in. The cozy space is chockful of unique décor, ranging from a miniature R2D2 to a framed photo of a llama in a cab and mugshot of Jim Morrison. While the simple cocktail menu features six carefully

crafted concoctions, the real star of the show is an extensive whiskey collection that’s packed with premium and rare finds. Straight Up is open only on Fridays and Saturdays, and you’ll have to make a bit of an effort to enjoy this local watering hole, but it’s worth it!

BENJAMIN’S UPSTAIRS

Delightful Dives

There are few things our locals love more than their favorite dive bar, so we’ve rounded up three of our faves to share. While everyone might not know your name, you are guaranteed to be thoroughly entertained during this walkable dive-bar crawl. COACH HOUSE You won’t find a more welcoming establishment than Scottsdale’s oldest tavern. Since 1959, Coach House has offered the ultimate divebar experience with classic beers, strong pours and friendly regulars. Stop by from November through New Year’s to see the bar transform into the most festive spot in Old Town. BOONDOCKS PATIO & GRILL With both indoor and outdoor space, an extensive list of bar games and a menu packed with comfort-style food, local beer, wine and creatively named docktails, Boondocks creates the perfect atmosphere for fun. GILIGIN’S BAR What happens when you pair daily food offers with an extensive drink menu and more than 300 different types of whiskey? You get one great dive bar. Whether you’re settling in to watch a game or playing bar games on the patio, Giligin’s is the perfect backdrop.

back corner. With each step, you move farther away from the lively bar and into an intimate dining room with relaxing music. The assortment of mismatched chairs at each table and the framed cocktail recipes, torn from aging magazines eccentrically placed on the walls, give the appearance of a sophisticated antiques shop. Featuring sharable chef’s plates paired with pétillant naturel wines and classic cocktails, Benjamin’s Upstairs is an immersive dining experience full of fresh ingredients and exciting flavors. SECOND STORY LIQUOR BAR A dark, mysterious stairway, strategically lit with soft lights, leads you up to Second

Story Liquor Bar in Old Town. The glittering chandelier in the center of the room offers an elegant contrast to the rustic miniature whiskey barrels scattered about the restaurant – no question a nod to Second Story’s extensive whiskey collection (more than 300 at last count). Masterful mixologists resemble wizards, concocting delightful cocktails out of homemade bitters, smoke and intricate garnishes. Keep an eye on the hostess stand and you’re sure to see staff pop in and out of the hidden room.
