Fuel For a Clean Nuclear Power
Could the moon become The Persian Gulf of The 21st Century? One million tons of helium 3 is expected to be located within the moons regolith (lunar soil) When identified in large deposits, this gas would be also found capable of strip mining and transformed into a liquified gas, then transported back to earth. Scientists propose nuclear fusion using the cooperative reaction of helium 3 and deuterium which would produce an energy that releases no radio-action nor nuclear waste...a cleaner nuclear power. Presently helium 3 is found on earth only as a byproduct of maintaining decommissioned nuclear weapons. Produced on the sun, there is believed to be 1 million tons of helium on the surface of the moon. If processed, 25 tons of helium 3 could fuel a nuclear reactor and power the United States for one year.
Making the Impossible Possible In Cologne, scientists are using nuclear fusion in an effort to transform life on earth and produce the same reaction that fuels the sun. Fossil fuel production would require 1000x the amount of fuel needed to produce the same amount of energy from a hydrogen fueled power station. Hydrogen is the most common element found here on earth. By heating and fusing hydrogen atoms, this reaction also produces dangerous neutrons that have presented drawbacks to using fusion as an alternative source of energy. One major drawback of using hydrogen is the damage to the walls of the nuclear reactor itself. Hot hydrogen neutrons clashing into one another building up over time, produce more costs for maintenance and structural replacement.
Helium 3 is a gas ejected from the surface of the the sun and is blown through space by solar winds. Over billions of years, this space gas has been trapped by the moon’s lunar soil where is has collected and built vast quantities.
Alternative ways of fueling a nuclear reactor would be to replace hydrogen as a fuel with helium 3, chemically very close to hydrogen...yet a gas found generally only on the moon. The helium 3 alternative uses fewer neutrons and there are no dangerous side effects... more profit, more productivity and greater sustainability. The most efficient energy on earth sourced out from the moon.
