PUBLISHER’S NOTE

SAYING

Goodbye

TO 2021... Lynette Janac, Publisher/CEO

HELLO 2022

It’s time to start making those New Year’s resolutions for 2022. I already started my list! Whether you are working on your personal or professional goals, be sure to make them attainable, timely and realistic. My hope is that, despite any bumps in the road that might prevent you from accomplishing them, you have the faith to always move forward and do the best you can. Not only is this year coming to an end, but so is our 10-year anniversary year. It was 2011 when I published my first edition of Luxury Guide (formerly South Florida Luxury Guide) and if you would’ve asked me 10 years ago where I expected to be or what I anticipated learning, I am not quite sure I know what I would’ve said. One thing for certain is I learned that there is nothing I can’t do—which means there is nothing you can’t do if you believe in yourself and put in the hard work necessary to make your dreams happen. I learned that while I started this business on my own, I was not alone—had it not been for the support of my team, friends, family and of course, my clients, I would not be here today. I learned that my core motivation comes from knowing I make an impact on people, and the more they appreciate me for it, the more I tirelessly want to support them. I learned that in this ever-fast moving world we live in, it is important to never rest on our laurels, always innovate and create— particularly as it pertains to business—which makes this an exciting time for me to share our new endeavor.

THANK YOU TO OUR MARKET SPONSORS

We are currently in the process of curating our first Annual Florida Luxury Guide (and special national one too) that will serve as a Curated Lifestyle Resource Guide! You’ll be able to skip hours of online research because we will have done it for you—from ideas on what to do and where to go throughout Florida (with many staycation options to choose), travel destinations in the U.S. and abroad to home design and decor inspirations from top retailers and interior designers. Be inspired by art from galleries, museums and artists; learn about some of the most desirable real estate markets to live in, visit or retire to. Get an adrenaline boost from a showcase of the hottest cars to drive and yachts to set sail in. Get tips from top beauty and wellness professionals, and—my favorite part—learn about unique finds that you never knew existed! Lastly, I hope you will enjoy this final issue of the year where we cover all the luxurious things we love, including our special feature on art and culture, as well as our annual holiday shopping guide! Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season! Gracefully yours,

Lynette Janac Publisher/Editor-In-Chief

“Baptist is just a shining star.” Why I Give: Michael and Valerie Katz A commercial real estate expert, Michael Katz knows a thing or two about building for success – which is why he is Baptist Health Foundation council chair for Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health. “I realized it should be my purpose to give what I can,” he says. “I just love thinking about how I can contribute to the Foundation and to the Institute.” He is also involved in programs like the HEAT. HELP. CURE. Bounce Back from Cancer TM, which raises funds for research at the Institute. “It’s a way to get across, in a different form, the mission of Baptist,” he says, “and also to raise awareness that Baptist is here to serve.” But while Miami Cancer Institute is his philanthropic focus, Michael also believes in spreading the word about Baptist Health’s other specialties, such as cardiovascular, neuroscience and orthopedics. “Baptist has all these different Centers of Excellence – it’s not just limited to one. And that’s a great story to be told.”

The Way to Wellness

Organization

Choose a fresh start by creating a new mindset in four key areas of your life and watch the transformation! BY MICHELE MARIN

Eating

Dr. William Li, internationally renowned physician and bestselling author of Eat to Beat Disease tells us, “It is not just about the food. It is about how your body’s health defense systems can be activated by what you feed it so that it can heal you from the inside out.” According to Dr. Li, these simple changes can make a big impact on your overall health: • Eat more whole plant-based foods such as kiwi, mangos and San Marzano tomatoes. • Stop drinking regular and diet sodas, which damage your health’s defenses. • Eliminate trans fats, which are found in fast food and ultra-processed food. drwilliamli.com

Studies show that organization reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol. But that’s not all! Organization leads to increased productivity, better sleep habits, creativity and more “me” time. Start with small actionable steps such as having a place for everything, no more than three tasks a day, and removing an item before buying something new. Try This: Organize Your Home 10 Minutes at a Time Cards A colorful deck of 52 cards outlines simple steps to organize, clean or clear a room. Tasks are broken down and explained step-by-step and can be accomplished in 10 minutes! amazon.com; $19.99

ORGANIZE YOUR SANCTUARY

Try This : Fresh N’ Lean This meal delivery service takes only three minutes in the microwave! Specializing in over 100 dishes, covering paleo, plant-based, clean keto and more, Fresh N’ Lean meals are free of preservatives, gluten, hormones and added sugars. freshnlean.com

Meditation

Brain clutter—overloading the brain with tasks, information, technology and stimuli— can harm productivity and mental health. Practicing just 10 minutes of daily meditation improves productivity, memory, efficiency and decreases stress. Meditation doesn’t have to be elaborate; simply get comfortable, focus on your breathing, and find a simple mantra to repeat such as “I am here.”

Sleeping

Research continually suggests that clutter results in overstimulation of the nervous system, making it hard to relax. One of the most critical areas to reduce visual clutter is the bedroom—keep dirty laundry, papers, and, yes, electronics out of sight to get a better night’s sleep. SLOW-ROASTED PEARS AND STRACCIATELLA CHEESE

CAPRESE GARDEN SALAD & GRILLED LANGOUSTINE

Cheese and pears are a classic combination— ancient, in fact, and so loved throughout Italy that there’s a saying based on this perfect marriage: Al contadino non far sapere, quant’è buono il cacio con le pere! “Don't tell the farmer how good pears are with cheese,” implying that he'll save them all for himself!

Prized for their delicate sweetness and meaty flesh, langoustine pair beautifully with the quintessentially Italian caprese salad. This elegant dish will absolutely delight your guests!

Yield: 6 portions Ingredients: • 3 pears (preferably Bosc) • 2 oz. muscovado sugar or brown sugar • 2 oz. honey • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 1 Meyer lemon (or yellow lemon) • Fresh granola • ¼ cup stracciatella cheese Procedure: 1. Cut the pears in halves and take the cores out with a spoon, then place on your Wolf Convection Steam Oven tray and dust with brown sugar. Set aside. 2. Add the stracciatella to a mixing bowl and add the vanilla, Meyer lemon zest and 1 tbsp. of the honey and mix by hand lightly to incorporate all the flavors. Set aside. 3. Add the granola to a flat dish and set aside. 4. Put the pears in your Wolf Convection Steam Oven on the Compote option under gourmet mode. Cook for 15 minutes. 5. Place the stracciatella on a dish and make a nest in the center of the cheese so that it can hold the pears. Once they’re ready, brush the extra honey on the top of the pears and pass them through the granola to create a crispy crust. Place on the stracciatella and add an extra glace of the honey.

Yield: 4 servings Ingredients: • 1 lb. heirloom tomatoes • 2 oz. fresh basil, plus extra for garnish • 4 oz. fresh mozzarella, unsliced • Olive oil • 1 orange • Salt and pepper to taste • 4 langoustines U7 (can also use shrimp) Procedure: 1. Preheat your Wolf range grill for approximately 20 minutes. 2. Cut the tomatoes in thick slices (or any desired cut—be creative!) and place in a tray with a rack. Season with salt and pepper and let sit. 3. Hand pick pieces of mozzarella and place in a mixing bowl, drizzle a bit of olive oil, squeeze half of the orange, chop the basil leaves, and add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside. 4. Clean your langoustines and season with salt, pepper, olive oil and 3 tbsp. of the orange juice. 5. Once the preheating is done, grill your langoustines for two minutes on each side and set them aside. 6. On your dish, place tomatoes and put the pieces of mozzarella around them, drizzle with the marinade of the mozzarella. Add some of the remaining basil leaves and place the langoustine on top of the tomatoes.

MOSCOW MULE COCKTAIL Traditionally served in a copper mug, this zingy 1940s-era cocktail has recently made a resurgence. This version uses crushed ice rather than ice cubes for a smoother drink. The key to a good Moscow mule is real ginger beer, which is spicier than ginger ale. Yield: 2 cocktails Ingredients: • 2 cups ice cubes • Finely grated zest of 2 limes plus ¼ cup fresh lime juice (from 2 or 3 limes) • ½ cup vodka • 1 to 1½ cups ginger beer • 1 lime, cut into wedges Procedure: 1. Place the ice and lime zest in the blender and select the Ice Crush setting to create crushed ice. 2. Once the cycle finishes, fill each glass two-thirds full with the shaved lime ice. 3. Top each glass with ¼ cup of the vodka, 2 tbsp. of the lime juice, and ½ to ¾ cup of the ginger beer. 4. Garnish each glass with a lime wedge and serve. Pro Tip: Pulsing the lime zest with the ice cubes enhances the bright citrus flavor of the drink.

Everybody Needs a Rock. Who or What Is Yours?

In 2001, Restelli and her husband Carlos Melo moved to Miami from Argentina to expand the legacy of their successful 50-yearold construction company. Shortly after, she was pregnant in a new city—a new home, leaving everything behind that was familiar to her. She openly shares that she joyfully spent many years as a loving wife, mother of two, daughter and friend. And while she was living a happy and fulfilled life, it was evident that while her world felt so complete, there was one thing missing: her rock, her own identity. She found this in her passion and love for art, and so her journey continues. I spoke with Restelli to learn what inspired her to do this series and its meaning to her. What does your artwork mean to you? My art is my rock, that special thing that means the world to me. It is my identity, my sense of self, my way to recharge my soul. Describe your inspiration behind the series Everybody Needs a Rock. The first painting of rocks was the result of the exploration of reflective surfaces. I found a photo of beautiful river rocks that captivated me, semi-submerged in water with many reflections and colors. I didn’t know that I would do a whole series about them at that time, but that one painting opened an entire universe of possibilities. Rocks are fascinating—their many characteristics, colors, sizes, shapes and textures allow different expressions and interpretations. They bring endless creative opportunities.

BY LYNETTE JANAC

When I first learned about the series Everybody Needs a Rock by artist Lara Restelli, my immediate translation was to think of when we are faced with life’s inevitable challenges and how important it is that we all have a “rock”—someone or something to lean on and lift us to keep going. After speaking with Restelli and learning about her inspiration and meaning behind the title, it gave me goosebumps. After many years of purchasing art from an aesthetic point of view, for the first time I had connected with art on a deeper, emotional level—something I always admired but never really understood that art aficionados do. It gave me a newfound appreciation for art, and artists and art enthusiasts alike. What I find fascinating is how we can all be looking at the same configuration, but what appears on the other side of our visual lens can mean something unique to each one of us. 54

LUXURY GUIDE

How do you think art is important to our society? Art, as a creative process, is vital for our well-being on an individual basis. What is good for an individual is good for society as a whole. I believe that everybody should practice some form of artistic expression, which does not necessarily have to be painting. We are all creative and curious by nature as children but get closed up in a box as adults. Creative and curious minds bring creative and new solutions to the world, which is vital to society. Any advice for our readers? Find your rock—something that is unique to you. It can be anything: a place, a person, a ritual or an activity that feeds your soul; something that gives you satisfaction, self-worth and self-esteem. This is particularly true among women, who are innate caregivers, and sometimes forget how important it is to take care of ourselves too. How did you come up with the title of your series? A friend of mine felt compelled to gift me a book as soon as she saw one of my early works, a book for children called Everybody Needs a Rock by Bird Baylor. The book empowers children to come up with ways to find their special rock. The author is very particular about enforcing that nobody can help you pick your rock, it must be your own unique, special thing. If we translate that notion into our daily lives, we all need to find that special rock. That thing that is unique to you and turns into your identity. For me, that’s my painting. Nothing ever sounded more appropriate than this title for my new series.

owned a gallery in Tel Aviv and as a kid I used to help him. Since that time, I liked it and I got involved. This is something that attracted me very much. How do you select the artists you represent in your gallery? Most of them are world famous. Some of them are in museums, some of them have been with me for 30 years. I go to a lot of art shows and I see what is new in the industry. I add maybe one or two artists to the gallery a year, but they have to be very good for me to include them. It has to be something special. Do you work with interior designers? Yes, we work with them alongside their clients to find the perfect artwork for their home. Art is very personal; it’s important to find a

piece that works with their decor, as well as speaks to their emotions so they can enjoy the timeless beauty for years to come. Do you assist with installation? We have a professional installation team, and we offer free local delivery and installation with every art purchase. How do you help homeowners curate a selection for their home? Our art consultants are very experienced in design and decor and we offer to do a photo rendering of art pieces in the client’s specific spaces. This helps clients visualize how a painting or sculpture will look prior to delivering it to their home.

THE HEART OF CORAL GABLES

In the spirit of the art season, we share insights from two prominent advocates in the City Beautiful. BY MICHAEL ISENBEK

“We are thrilled to present this sculpture to the City of Coral Gables

and make history during such an important time in the community. We look forward to making additional contributions and making this an epicenter of arts and culture.”

ue to his love and support of the arts in the City of Coral Gables, Alirio Torrealba, CEO of MG Developer, is a board member of the Coral Gables Museum. He is a philanthropist at heart as well as being the most active residential developer in the City of Coral Gables, and a big promoter of arts and culture in the City Beautiful. Torrealba’s support of the city’s Art in Public Places program is a major manifestation of his philanthropic passion. Alirio contributes to the museum by sponsoring art exhibitions like Julio Larraz: The Kingdom We Carry Inside and finds ways to involve the community. mgdevelopermiami.com

The original 30-foot-long stone bench is the inaugural dedication to the City’s Art in Public Places, Public Art in Private Development program, furthering Torrealba’s mission of enhancing arts and culture in the community. In the spirit of city founder George Merrick’s “Building Beautiful” philosophy, Torrealba presented “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to the City of Coral Gables. The expansive bench, located in Balboa Plaza, is an element of a bigger installation dubbed the “Outdoor Room,” which includes lamp and carpet sculptures. The installation is conceived as a social space, both familiar and mystifying.

”The museum of Coral Gables is the pillar of the City Beautiful, an ancient and classic city with an idea of Art and Culture with a lot of enrichment since its foundation which now it is projecting like other cities who are offering interesting things for other developers to involve themselves. I am confident that the President and the Executive Director, Jose Valdes Fauli and John Allen, are working on the evolution of the museum.”

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF “A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM”

A Few Words From MAYOR LAGO

“The sign of any great city is the strength of its cultural life.”

CORAL GABLES MUSEUM Coral Gables Museum, an institute devoted to the 1920s planned community, opened in 2010 in the historic Old Police and Fire Station structure. The Museum’s mission is to celebrate, investigate and explore the civic arts of architecture and urban and environmental design, including fostering an appreciation for the history, vision, and cultural landscape of Coral Gables, promoting beauty and planning as well as historic and environmental preservation. The museum’s programming includes exhibitions, collections, educational offerings, lectures, tours, publications, and special events.

Art adds character and encourages people to visit, which serves as an economic driver to our businesses. Also, through art, we get to communicate our ideas, express our emotions, and effectively connect with others. Simply put, art builds a sense of community... The Coral Gables Museum is an incredible addition to our City. The Museum does an incredible job with programming and is vital to our community. It allows artists to showcase their work and serves as a cultural and historic destination to all those who live and visit our City Beautiful. We are very proud to have this institution in our city and grateful to John Allen’s leadership as the Executive Director.”

Julio Larraz (b. Havana, Cuba, 1944) is currently one of the most influential figures in Latin American art. This exhibition will be Larraz’s first museum retrospective, representing all mediums and key time periods of his life and work, from his early days as a caricaturist for major newspapers and magazines, to later drawings, paintings and sculptures.

LALIQUE

The lauded glassmaker and French lifestyle brand brings its exuberant history and iconic style to the tony Bal Harbour Shops. BY KERRY SHORR

THE BEGINNING | 1888

René Jules Lalique

Envisioning a world without Lalique is like walking to the moon: c’est impossible. Hailed as the forefather of modern jewelry, founder René Jules Lalique began his career as a designer of fine jewelry in the late 19th century. After apprenticing with jeweler Louis Aucoc and then crafting baubles for Boucheron, Cartier and other legendary houses, he launched his own business in 1888 where he fashioned both unique and attainable jewelry. His brooches, pendants and rings were inspired by Japanese art, nature and the feminine form, and blended unconventional materials of the day—glass, iridescent enamels, horn and ivory—with gold and gemstones. After nearly two years, the 30-year-old had transcended into one of France’s most talented and respected art nouveau designers of jewelry. Gradually, the avant-gardist’s focus shifted from jewelry to glassmaking and, in 1909, he rented a glass factory near Paris to manufacture the elegant flacons he designed for perfumer Françoise Coty and other French olfactory scions, including his own eponymous scent bottles, homeware and objets d’art. Lalique also received commissions to design architectural glass for buildings, trains and cruise ships. One of his most swoon-worthy designs was the frosted panels he made for the legendary Côte d’Azur Pullman Express featuring grapes and bacchanalian maidens, which were subsequently ensconced on the Orient Express and featured in the 1974 film, Murder on the Orient Express.

Marc Lalique

Marie-Claude Lalique

Today, the Lalique name continues to encapsulate the elegance and glamour of the golden age of design, but the Zurich-headquartered company has not been resting on its laurels. After Lalique’s passing in 1945, his son Marc, a designer and engineer, assumed control of the business. One of his innovations was adding lead to glass to make it heavier and more crystalline. Marc’s daughter Marie-Claude carried on her father and grandfather’s artistry and added more elaborate jewelry designs, as well as venturing into fragrance, textiles and leather goods. The Martinets vase and peony-encrusted Pivoine bowl were two of her designs. Through the Lalique Art Division, the company hosts collaborations with accomplished artists like Sir Elton John, who supply their own artistic spins. For the spring, summer and winter 2021 collections, Lalique teamed up with British artist Nic FiddianGreen to recast his 33-foot-tall Still Water bronze sculpture of a horse drinking water into smaller amber, blue, clear and black crystal sculptures. Lalique pays homage to its past and present with homewares that balance function and beauty. Its collections

Silvio Denz

In 2008, Silvio Denz took the helm of Lalique and propelled the brand forward, including modernizing its factories, launching Lalique Art, and introducing the hospitality pillar, which includes Villa Rene Lalique and Chateau Lafaurie Peyraguey. In 2021, he led the acquisition of The Glenturret Distillery.

encompass home accessories, furniture, drinking and dining accessories, lighting, and soft furnishings like cushions and bed linens. Lalique Studio recently expanded its popular Gaïa by Lalique collection with a line of products that include numbered-edition crystal vases and bowls adorned with familiar Lalique imagery like merles, raisins and heart-shaped pepper leaves. Lalique has always been synonymous with perfume. Produced at Cristallerie Lalique, the company’s sole production facility in Alsace, every flacon reflects the apex of French craftsmanship. The Lalique de Lalique Fougères Crystal Edition 2022, now on sale at select stores, was released this fall and is decorated with a delicate fern motif. If glass is Lalique’s heart, then jewelry is its soul. When MarieClaude succeeded her father as president in 1977, she reinvigorated the company’s jewelry arm, which flourished alongside new developments in the fragrance business. A pair of new collections was released as a part of the 2021 Fall/ Winter collection, Gaïa: Papillon (Butterfly) and Vigne (Vine), which honor Lalique’s venerated Alsatian roots and proclivity to nature.

MOVING FORWARD This winter, the luxury house will unveil its newest outpost at the stylish Bal Harbour Shops. Private shopping sessions, bespoke interior design and in-home consultations are some of the services guests can experience, as well as a virtual showroom with OLED technology that depicts Lalique interiors in various settings. A curated selection of jewelry, fragrance, homeware, and limited edition works by Damien Hirst, Arik Levy and other preeminent artists will also be on sale. “We are thrilled to have an opportunity to re-introduce the Lalique brand and offer a modern luxury client experience,” says James Mun, chief executive officer of Lalique North America.

MAESTRO OF

Metal

Constantly pushing the boundaries of art and design, BELT is a metal design studio of dreamers, artists, designers and makers led by "Maestro" Louis Beltran. BY CHRISTIANA LILLY

B

orn nearly 40 years ago from the embers of creativity and drive, BELT was founded with the idea that beautiful metalwork had a place in design. Armed with a team of talented craftsmen, the company works side-by-side with architects, interior designers, project owners and builders to make their vision a reality.

With Colombia’s construction crisis in 1999, Beltran and Garcia relocated to Florida. Here, BELT focused on ultra-high-end residential architecture by collaborating with lauded architects, designers, builders and homeowners in the most exclusive locations around the country. Today, the firm boasts boutique projects around the globe—as well as three Mizner Awards for excellence in craftsmanship, as well as other industry awards and recognitions—thanks to BELT’s reputation for its discerning design eye, metal artistry and unmatched quality. We talked to the team at BELT about its inspirations and emphasis on collaboration. What qualities set BELT apart from others in the industry? Louis Beltran, “The Maestro,” is the creative mind behind many of the design projects the firm undertakes, thanks to his true essence as a sculptor and artist with an incredible passion for metal design and deep technical knowledge of the materials. He and the second generation of dreamers, Valentina and Federico Beltran, architects and designers as well, blend their design drive with craft capabilities in every project. With more than 120 people in its atelier, BELT has mastered the techniques of blacksmithing, bronzing, forging

and casting, and combined them with innovative cutting-edge craftsmanship. What is your signature product, service or design element? We work mostly in specialty interior and exterior architectural metals, artistic metal surfaces, custom furniture, light fixtures, design objects and art commissions, but we don't really have a signature service, product or element. On one side, we are solutions seekers with a very detailed eye for aesthetics, beauty, art and architecture, and on the other side, we invite homeowners, clients, influencers and architects to join us in the process of co-creating someone's vision. We push boundaries to help clients open their minds to new possibilities. How do you approach a blank canvas? We love blank canvases and they have never been a challenge for us at BELT. We listen, ask questions and bring ideas to the table to understand what the client truly wants. They see the unlimited capabilities we bring to the table and the co-creation process starts! How would you describe your clientele? Those who are on a quest for design excellence, outstanding quality and unparalleled commitment. Those who believe quality and craftsmanship are not trade-offs for lower prices. We work with project owners, architects, interior designers and builders of new or remodels of high-end single-family homes, boutique luxury hotels, restaurants and places of worship. How do you collaborate with clients? We invite our clients to join us in the creative journey. There is a feeling of confidence that is created from the first conversation then we get to know each other. First, we identify what the client needs—their expectations, dreams, restrictions, constraints and above all what they are dreaming. We show them what we have done and what we could do and the endless possibilities of metal. There may be sketches or storytelling as we start understanding each other. How do you define a successful project? With a big smile on a client’s face. This shows how much they appreciate our work and how proud they are of their project outcome.

What would be your dream creative project? To participate in a project from the beginning and co-design and co-create with the

PHOTOS COURTESY OF BELT

It all began when architect and sculptor Louis Beltran and architect Luz Angela Garcia were a young couple looking to open their own architectural practice in Colombia. In this endeavor, they recognized an opportunity to forge design and artistry in the field of construction. BELT was created in 1985, as a place where the ancient craft of metalworking could be brought to the modern day with timeless creations. The firm exploded and soon its works were center stage at hotels, restaurants, residences and public spaces.

owners, designers or architects. When they trust us with the design of all metal pieces of a project, it’s a project in which we can truly create great designs. What are your favorite styles to work on? We don't really have a style; our style is metal in projects where we can genuinely codesign with owners, designers and architects to create unique and timeless pieces. We enjoy working on both cutting-edge contemporary projects as well as traditional gems looking to preserve the classic expression of design. What is your goal as you’re working on a project? To exceed each client’s expectations and deliver unique timeless lifetime pieces. To create pieces that are a true statement and complement the spaces in which they are placed. What constitutes “good design?” Good design is being able to create harmonic pieces that go smoothly with the space they are designed for. Pieces that last a lifetime through the combination of uniqueness, high quality and great usability, and pieces that are created with the least impact on the environment. We believe that good design is sustainable design. What do you regard as the greatest success in your career? Success is every empowered artisan who shares their journey with us, every team effort to find a solution, and every smile on the clients' faces when they see their dreams materialize. Success is being here, now, doing what we love the most. We believe no one is better than their last project. To us, the last project is our greatest success, which is why we treat each project as the last project of our life What's next for BELT? We are working on some exciting projects right now. On one side we are developing limitededition collections and collaborations of some of our more sought-after pieces such as light fixtures, furniture and surfaces, seeing metal from another perspective and combining it with other equally inspiring materials. We are always aiming for timeless designs for passionate lives. What legacy do you wish to leave behind regarding your work/ product? That we have lived our purpose in every project we complete. That we have imagined, created and built timeless pieces that honor craftsmanship and design and have enriched the spaces they live in. A legacy in which our contribution to the trade elevates the honor for metal art and more pieces around the world continue to be imagined, designed and built for generations to come. ransforming four walls into a dream home is not challenging for Marc Julien—it’s the norm. At Marc Julien Homes, the custom homebuilding and remodeling business he launched in 2009, Julien and his team are experts at designing and renovating homes that seamlessly align with their clients’ distinctive needs and lifestyles while providing comprehensive turnkey and white-glove services from beginning to end. The Delray Beach-based company also has an interior designer on hand to seamlessly guide clients through the selection process of fixtures, finishes and other customizable materials for their residences. We talked with Julien to learn more about his expertiseand how he has become one of the leading home builders.

LUXURY GUIDE

What differentiates Marc Julien Homes from other luxury custom homebuilders? We take immense pride in everything we do. Unparalleled architecture, perfect alignment, an elegant aesthetic—plus our commitment to excellence helps make our projects stand apart from every other home in South Florida. In addition to our custom-building service, we can remodel and relocate preexisting homes as well. Do you specialize in any specific design styles? Our team has the expertise to realize any architectural style you desire—from transitional to farmhouse, Key West to contemporary, and Mediterranean to modern. Additionally, we’ve built luxury, two-story townhomes complexes like 906 Villas and 7 on 7th in Delray Beach. What are the benefits of building a custom residence, buying a movein ready house or renovating your own home? There are advantages for each. Customization puts you in the proverbial driver’s seat because you determine every detail, from the architectural style to the square footage. A move-in property often brings more convenience—and less stress—because features like millwork, beautiful finishes, and built-in upgrades like smart-home and energy-efficient technology are already chosen and installed. Home renovation usually means spending less than building and buying because you’re remodeling on a room-byroom basis, so you’ll get a great product without spending a fortune. Plus, you keep all the memories you’ve made.

PHOTOS COURTESY MARC JULIEN HOMES

Dream Makers

You’ve been in business for more than 10 years. How many homes has the company built? We have completed over 75 homes throughout the state of Florida.

How can you make a home energy efficient? Whether it’s a new build or a remodel, you can optimize your home’s energy efficiency anytime. Consider variables like climate, sun exposure and site conditions to configure a complete system of energy-saving solutions, which may include roofing materials that deflect sunlight, an HVAC system upgrade, and LED and fluorescent light bulbs because they generate more light and less heat. What made you expand your business to accommodate renovations, kitchen and bath design, outdoor living, and even garage transformations? For over a decade, our company has been renovating and creating beautiful new home designs our clients cherish, so expanding into these areas was a natural segue to unlock the full potential of a home or property. Why is it important to invest in your garage? A garage tailor-made for your lifestyle is the de rigueur expression of luxurious living. More than a parking space, garages now offer more space saving, storage solutions, and can easily double as workout/yoga studios, home offices and man caves. With a focus on innovative design and lifestyle-friendly engineering, we can makeover any garage into a multifunctional, escape-worthy space. What are the popular trends to create the perfect outdoor oasis? Alfresco kitchens have become the popular alternative for cooking and dining indoors, especially during the summer months in South Florida. Through our subsidiary company Exterior Elementz, we create personalized backyard and patio retreats that boast everything from state-of-the-art appliances—including pizza ovens and wine/beverage

centers—to open-air structures complete with plush seating, ceiling fans, entertainment systems, fire pits and more. What are the popular trends in kitchen and bath design? We’re seeing a lot of handleless kitchens, smart appliances like touchless faucets, architectural ceilings and moody palettes. You have generously pledged to raise $500,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Why did you choose to work with these organizations? I survived Stage 4 cancer in my left lymphoid and left tonsil, and I wanted to help others with cancer. I’ve always loved cycling and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society helped me build a team of individuals interested in participating in the 2021 Race Across America. We partnered with the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation to raise money for research to find safer, less toxic, and more effective treatments for children facing cancer. In July, you competed in Race Across America (a 3,000-mile, transcontinental race) with a team of seven cyclists whose lives had also been impacted by cancer. How fulfilling was it to participate? It was very rewarding. Our team worked very hard, so we considered it an incredible accomplishment when we placed third. I can’t say if I’ll race next year or not, but I have officially left cancer behind. What’s next for Marc Julien? To keep building memories. Audio One handles everything from A/V and automation to engineering and consultations, and more!

Landscape wall TV for Outdoor entertaining space.

Why is detailed planning related to the implementation of smart home features necessary in the beginning stages of a project? Without a detailed plan, you may be heading toward obstacles later. During our pre-project planning stage, we have an initial meeting with our client to discuss their needs, ideas, expectations and non-negotiables for the project. We use this information to deliver a concise proposal that exceeds their expectation. Taking care of the details early will save both time and money. What is the importance of installing pre-wire for a home? Pre-wiring an entire residence is crucial to managing the technologies for Smart Home Solutions. Just relying on Wi-Fi for such common tech as tablets, laptops, cellphones, and smart TVs can result in network congestion, or even an outright halt in signal delivery. Wiring is a better networking backbone for bandwidth-intensive applications and technologies. It will make your devices function at their fullest potential. Why would you consult with AV integrators when designing outdoor living spaces? Creating an ideal listening environment in an outdoor living space is a challenge, as sound can get lost in the large area of a yard. The key is careful positioning of multiple speakers throughout the yard to cover the whole space—bringing in an expert makes sense when trying to accomplish this. Also, collaboration may be needed with landscape architects or general contractors to form a harmonious whole. And you don’t have to stop at a single space, creating distinct speaker zones is possible. What are the benefits for the collaboration with Architects/ General Contractors/ and Designers in the beginning of a project? The beauty behind collaboration is two entities developing two separate visions for a space and blending them together into one. Mirror televisions that disappear, and Ketra-caliber lighting systems are some examples of collaborative magic in function and form. But before actual work begins, all parties, must meet and determine what they want to achieve. Audio One is all about seamless collaboration with General Contractors, Architects, Designers, and other professionals. In our role as AV integrators, we are usually the first ones to begin a project and the last team to leave a job site. And, of course, our ultimate goal is client satisfaction.

A MIAMI LUXURY REAL ESTATE STAR IS BUILDING THE NATION’S TALLEST WATERFRONT DUAL TOWER RESIDENCES For 20 years, Melo Group has played a major role in Downtown Miami’s real estate development resurgence, and the momentum endures with Aria Reserve Miami, a monumental condominium project starting construction this winter. BY MICHAEL ISENBEK

Carlos Melo, Jose Luis Melo, Martin Melo

94

U.S. Construction of the development’s first tower is slated to begin in early 2022 and will be completed in 2024. Q&A With Melo Group

The family-owned-and-operated company is fueled by more than 50 years of international experience in the real estate industry and decades of development success in South Florida. Dr. Jose Luis Ferreira de Melo serves as president and managerial leader, providing a wealth of first-hand knowledge within the industry and the business itself, while his sons Carlos and Martin Melo are co-principals. This highly educated and experienced trio brought Melo Group to Miami at the dawn of the 21st century.

What’s the secret to Melo Group’s success? Carlos: Our philosophy has always been to build for what the market demands. Over the last 20 years, our firm has acquired land in and around Miami’s Downtown waterfront—and as long-term owners and operators of real estate in the area, our investments have allowed us to develop the right product at the right time to meet demand for locals and residents around the world wanting to live in Miami.

Currently, Melo Group is moving forward with an extraordinary addition to the Edgewater neighborhood—Aria Reserve Miami, a pair of 62-story luxury condominiums that will be the tallest waterfront dual tower residences in the

How rare are Aria Reserve’s offerings in Miami’s real estate market? Martin: This type of waterfront, luxury condominium opportunity simply no longer exists in Miami.

LUXURY GUIDE

How do your prices compare to other luxury properties on the market? Carlos: Non-penthouse residences at Aria Reserve will include one- to fourbedroom floor plans measuring between 1,100 and 2,600 square feet in size. Prices range from about $850,000 to just over $2 million, at an average of approximately $850 per square foot. What’s unique about Aria Reserve? Martin: Every residence will include two private or semi-private elevators, a dedicated office/bonus room, at least 10-foot-high ceilings, and open flowthrough layouts with up to 11-foot-deep expansive terraces boasting unparalleled sunset views to the west and bay and ocean views to the east. Aria will boast over 2 acres of amenities, with standout features including a semiOlympic-sized lap pool and whirlpool

PHOTOS COURTESY OF MELO GROUP

Melo Group is Miami’s preeminent developer of luxury real estate communities, known for having a highly intelligent approach to development, design, construction and management of luxury properties. A driving force behind Downtown Miami’s real estate resurgence since 2001, it boasts a portfolio of more than 6,000 total luxury condominiums and high-end rental apartments completed throughout the Greater Downtown Miami area, and more than 3,500 units in development. When it comes to creating communities, Melo Group specializes in strategically acquiring prime waterfront or transitcentric properties to create the ideal product for transformative change.

spa, childrens’ splash pad, playground area, teen lounge and gaming center, theater, tennis courts, basketball courts, paddle courts, a golf putting green, and an indoor/outdoor wellness center with spa/steam/sauna facilities, massage rooms, a state-of-the-art gym, yoga lounge and meditation garden. What aspects of the penthouse collection are a draw for buyers? Carlos: Aria Reserve’s tri-level mansions include everything Miami’s most discerning buyers are looking for: privacy, space, access to an abundance of outdoor amenities and, of course, some of the best waterfront views in Miami, featuring private rooftop decks with pools and summer kitchens. Yet, one of the major draws of our trilevel penthouses is our unique “garage vaults,” which give residents access to their own private climate-controlled and secure threecar garage within the building’s larger parking facility—a distinctive feature that has been especially popular among homeowners who are transitioning to condo living. How is buyer demand with Aria Reserve and what is motivating their decision to buy? Martin: Over the last few months, we’ve seen incredible demand for our larger residences, as buyers look to downsize from big houses

and upgrade to amenity-rich and convenient luxury condo living. Aria Reserve is sure to appeal to local empty-nesters as well as outof-market domestic and international residents looking to relocate to and live full-time in Miami. With land in Miami starting to dwindle, what is next for Melo Group? Carlos: We have focused on buying land over the years. Once we believe the time is right, we will move on to develop those sites. For now, our focus is delivering Aria Reserve. Once we are ready to open, we will focus on other developments and what the market is demanding at the moment.

ou don’t have to look far down the block to see how the pandemic, technology and America’s hyper-scorching real estate market are redefining how we live, work and invest in the fundamental concept of “home.” The burning question now is: what comes next? Real estate veterans Giovanna Guzman, founder and broker of Miami-based International Realty Group (IRG), and Cengiz Bayirli, managing partner, are behind one of South Florida’s topproducing brokerages, aligning high net worth international buyers and sellers with their dream homes and lifestyles for 12 years now (the firm celebrated its anniversary in November). Through IRG’s subsidiaries, the duo also specializes in offering investors turnkey, incomeproducing properties in Baltimore, Maryland. IRG’s common values—integrity, technology and education—drive everything Guzman and Bayirli’s dedicated team of more than two dozen agents do every day. They’re also what keep their brokerage loyal with buyers, relevant with sellers, and at the top of international investors’ minds. What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in the real estate market? Since the pandemic, people have realized the importance of bigger spaces, so the demand for single-family homes 96

LUXURY GUIDE

has increased dramatically. Developers are also building “houses in the sky” with the added bonus of offering luxury amenities. What are three things buyers looking to invest in real estate need to know? 1) Do your research. 2) Find the right team. 3) Be ready to move fast. The buying process can be overwhelming, especially for first-time homebuyers. What three tips would you give to sellers looking to trade up in the current market? 1) Establish expectations and make a plan. 2) Work with a team that knows the market. 3) Don’t miss out! Now is definitely a seller’s market. Are there financial advantages to buying property in the U.S. right now? Many Latin American investors consider the U.S. dollar a more stable currency. Domestic buyers are also taking advantage of record low interest rates and the fact that Florida has no state income tax. Why is South Florida real estate an attractive investment? South Florida’s warm weather, beaches, and proximity to the U.S. East Coast and Latin America have made it a top destination for foreign buyers and buyers relocating from colder climates. What are the top five South Florida markets to invest in for 2022? Miami, Naples, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. What makes Baltimore a good place to own income-producing properties? Baltimore offers the highest returns when it comes to income-producing properties due to the high demand for rental properties relative to the total investment size.

Cengiz Bayirli and Giovanna Guzman

What high-profile development projects are IRG launching next? We are currently about to launch our next venture. Stay tuned! What are some new projects on the horizon? Onda Residences just broke ground in November in Bay Harbor Islands, and soaring through the sky will be the 100-story skyscraper, Waldorf Astoria Miami Residences. Casa Bella is another exciting residence in the works, furnished by B&B Italia. Bentley Residences will offer an ultra-private experience with only four residences per floor. SMOOTH OPERATOR The Pershing 6X is the newest member of Pershing’s Generation X series of sleek sport yachts, with a bolder stance complemented by an audacious emphasis on speed. The big aft sun pad and large lounge, each fitted with a reclining backrest, clearly convey that this Italian-built yacht is for chasing sunshine. A large opening sunroof over the helm, where carbon fiber enhances the control panels and wheel, conveys a similar feeling. Luxurious touches like lacquered wood furnishings, parquet flooring, and leathers from Poltrona Frau and Mastrotto accentuate the allure too. Equally striking horizontal LED bars overhead add to the decor. pershing-yacht.com

And glamorous she is, with an art deco interior that the owner created with Miami-based designer Giuseppina Arena. SAYING

Goodbye TO 2021

Not only is 2021 coming to an end, so is our 10-year anniversary year. In 2011, the first edition of Luxury Guide (formerly South Florida Luxury Guide) was published. And as an expression of gratitude, founder Lynette Janac went out to visit some of the early adopters of her vision over the past year to present them with a small gift as a token of appreciation, and instead, it was Lynette who got the gift of these beautiful messages shared with her on video and translated in copy below. To view the original videos, visit LuxuryGuideUsa.com. TODD NORDSTROM Realtor, Compass Realty | Nordstrom Network “You are wonderful and aside from that, you have an amazing group of people in your network. I have my own group of vendor partners I work with, but if I need something, I often grab the guide as the resource to find a business partner that I know is associated and vetted by you. Oh, and I love your events!

TODD HANSON Owner, Audio One “You and your team go above and beyond. The fact that you truly care about me, my business and all my people radiate off of you. I not only love the publication and what you do with it, but what I really like is you do everything in your power to connect me with other synergistic companies. You have opened a lot of doors for us, and I love that you are always looking at new and innovative ways to grow and help us grow too. 10 years doesn’t surprise me, and I know we will be here another 10 years!”

SYLVIA FRAGOS Broker, Great Estates International Realty “From the moment I met you, I saw your drive, passion and immediately connected with your energy. There’s no greater magazine (guide) for me other than Luxury Guide. It gives me consistent results and has changed my business in so many ways, but more so because of you and your drive to give us networking opportunities. The way you bring people together and encourage us to work together is so nice. It feels like we’re a family and for that I’m so grateful. I highly recommend anyone to your company.”

LUIS SOMOANO Owner, Doral Lincoln, Lincoln of Cutler Bay and Kendall Toyota “The first time I met you and you came to me with your crazy idea, I knew it would be successful because of your attitude and passion—I was 100% sure of it. This is the only print publication that I choose. It’s been a great partnership for the past 10 years, and I know you are going to keep moving in the right direction and I am going to keep pushing behind you.”

ELIZABETH PEREZ

VICTOR HERRERA

Commercial & Residential Realtor, The Keyes Company | Luxury Portfolio “The first time I met Lynette I knew she would just soar because of her personality, which has never changed from day one. I don’t see limits to her potential. As an advertiser, I am proud because the publication is so beautiful. Her and her team work so hard. It is the best magazine ‘guide’ you can ever have. JESSE STOLOW Partner, Total Windows “The idea you came to us with was such a different and new experience, and we were struggling with what to do with our marketing at that point. You brought to us the idea of collaborating, and you still do that, 10 years later—which is amazing. You work so diligently for all the partners you have in the guide.”

CARLOS BRAVO President/Architect, Urvanx “We are very grateful to you. You have provided many opportunities for us and opened many doors with not only new clients, but new associates as well, so it’s been very rewarding for our company.”

IRINA ALVAREZ Realtor, One Sotheby’s International Realty “I met Lynette eight years ago after I won a fullpage ad in her publication that she donated to a nonprofit event I attended. I bidded on it and won. Shortly after, she and I met to discuss the next steps of preparing the ad and I have been a client ever since. Lynette is a ray of sunshine, a beacon of hard work, a superb professional, a kind-hearted and genuine human being who has now become an outstanding friend who I admire and respect.”

KATIA BATES Director, Interior Designer | Innovative Creations “Lynette is a very hardworking woman who through perseverance has reached amazing goals in her career. Over the years, we have enjoyed working with her and her team. We wish Lynette a very bright future and lots of success with her new ventures.”
