Jennifer Ferrell of Riverside Designers takes us inside a recent Kiawah Island project that perfectly showcases their fresh, edited approach to classic southern design.
Interior designer Jennifer Ferrell, owner of Riverside Designers, is known in Charleston for her high-end whole-home renovations and new construction projects that bring a fresh, edited approach to classic southern design. Ferrell’s portfolio includes luxury homes on Kiawah Island, Daniel Island, Seabrook Island, Wadmalaw Island, and historic Charleston and Mount Pleasant.
As such, she knows a thing or two, or twenty, about maximizing the functionality and joy of your new home. “It’s so worth it to hire a designer when you’re buying or building your dream house,” she says. “When you’re spending that much money on a luxury home, it makes sense for the interiors to be on par with the value and aesthetic of the house itself. Not only will you actually enjoy your new home more but you will also be protecting your investment by keeping it up to date.”
Ferrell also advises clients moving to the Lowcountry to carefully consider what to bring from their old home. “Often, moving here involves not only a new house but an entirely new lifestyle in a different climate. That requires thoughtful design, and we work with clients to advise which art, heirlooms, and antiques make sense in their new house. Don’t pay to move or store everything just to see if it will work, when you can absolutely plan ahead.”
Ferrell’s most recent project on Kiawah Island is a perfect example of tailored Lowcountry design that feels welcoming in all seasons. The client wanted the interior design to compliment the beautiful views and have a southern, cottage feel but didn’t want anything overly formal, themed, or beachy. Ferrell designed a lovely, elegant retreat and furnished it down to the bookshelves.
Though the foundational palette is neutral, she used elements such as green cabinetry in the wet bar to have fun with color in a way the client won’t get tired of. She also used classic details, such as marble in the bathrooms, to make the home feel exceptionally luxurious. “I really respect the aesthetics my clients are drawn to, but part of my job is to push them gently a bit outside the box,” she says. “In the end, they end up happily surprised.”
