Cenni Storici La Principessa si trova ai piedi di un gruppo di colline nei dintorni di Lucca, dove numerosi parchi e giardini nascondono gelosamente le austere architetture dei palazzi in villa, antiche residenze delle più nobili ed illustri famiglie lucchesi. E di tutti questi palazzi La Principessa vanta le origini più lontane nel tempo: essa fu infatti dimora e corte di Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli (1281-1328), Signore e Duca di Lucca, uomo d’arme e capitano di ventura al servizio prima dell’imperatore Arrigo VII e quindi di Ludovico il Bavaro, passato dalla storia alla leggenda attraverso il racconto che delle sue gesta fece il Machiavelli, il quale adombrò in lui la figura del Principe ideale. Allora l’aspetto della residenza era molto diverso da quello attuale e nelle Cronache del Sercambi se ne può vedere una testimonianza illustrata: di quell’epoca rimane ancora, si può dire intatta, la chiesina lungo il muro di cinta del parco, mentre nei lavori di restauro effettuati nel 1970 si sono trovate consistenti tracce del loggiato trecentesco al piano terra ed alcuni frammenti del grande affresco che Castruccio aveva fatto eseguire nel salone principale per celebrare l’incoronazione di Ludovico il Bavaro.

Dall’epoca della sua costruzione (intorno al 1320) la villa ha subito trasformazioni ed ampliamenti in relazione ai numerosi cambiamenti di proprietà ma ha conservato intorno a sé l’atmosfera magica e rarefatta che è riservata a quelle cose che hanno creato la Storia; vicino a questa villa si sono moltiplicati gli insediamenti fin dal secolo XV e si è così generato il prezioso “tessuto” che ha trasformato un paesaggio collinare calcareo ed aspro nel territorio più dolce ed ameno della campagna lucchese. Non fa meraviglia quindi che molti gentiluomini e diplomatici della corte napoleonica, venuti a Lucca al seguito della principessa Elisa Baciocchi Bonaparte nel 1805, abbiano scelto su queste colline la propria dimora; anche se non si sa con precisione a quale di questi dignitari debba essere attribuito lo stemma corso che compare sull’ingresso delle scuderie della Principessa; è certo comunque che la villa nei primi anni del secolo XIX ha assunto gran parte dell’aspetto attuale attraverso la ricomposizione di tutte le trasformazioni subite, nell’elegante e semplice disegno della sua facciata principale e la ricostruzione del parco di gusto tipicamente francese con le grandi masse arboree simmetricamente distribuite lungo il muro di cinta trecentesco. In questa veste l’hanno conosciuta i Borbone-Parma, l’ultima famiglia regnante del piccolo stato di Lucca che ne fece luogo di rappresentanza e foresteria per ospiti illustri. E’ alla prolungata presenza di uno di questi ospiti che si deve il nome di La Principessa attribuito alla villa: un piccolo mistero galante o un intrigo politico che non sono mai stati sciolti. La storia contemporanea ha voluto ricollegare i destini di questa bella dimora alla tradizione francese; essa è diventata un hotel confortevole e riservato, una tappa per gli illustri pellegrini che sulle orme dei raffinati viaggiatori dei secoli scorsi convergono dall’Europa e dal Mondo a visitare le meraviglie della terra di Toscana.

Facendo richiesta la mattina stessa il tempo di attesa è fino a 30 minuti – il servizio prevede un supplemento. 9 RISTORANTE Il Ristorante di Villa La Principessa si trova al piano terra della Villa nella zona della Sala del Camino. Durante il periodo estivo, la cena verrà invece servita presso un apposito spazio esterno e non nella sala ristorante. La cena viene servita dalle ore 19.45 alle ore 22.00. Lo Chef è lieto di presentarVi la “Sua Carta” con piatti tipici della cucina nazionale impreziositi da primizie e gusti tipici delle nostre zone ed il Maitre sarà lieto di provvedere al giusto abbinamento offrendoVi un‘ampia scelta di vini locali, e non, della cantina. Qualora abbiate particolari esigenze Vi preghiamo di informare direttamente lo Chef che vi assisterà in ogni preferenza. Il Ristorante prevede un numero limitati di posti, si prega quindi di prenotare con anticipo il Vostro tavolo. In estate i nostri Ospiti possono gustare un light lunch all’aperto nella zona antistante la piscina dalle ore 12.00 alle ore 14.00; si prega prenotare sempre con anticipo il Vostro tavolo. 9 SERVIZIO BAR Il nostro Bar è aperto dalle ore 10:30 alle 23:00 – servizio in camera con supplemento. PISCINA 9 La Piscina è attiva nel periodo estivo e rimane aperta tutti i giorni dalle 8:30 alle 19:00. I signori clienti potranno ritirare i teli bagno direttamente a bordo vasca. Ogni Ospite riceve un telo bagno al giorno e per ogni richiesta supplementare prevede un extra di Euro 3,00. Nel periodo estivo sarà servito un light lunch presso il giardino della piscina. Si prega di prenotare il tavolo.

CHIAVI DELLA CAMERA Preghiamo tutti gli ospiti di consegnare la chiave alla reception ad ogni Vostra uscita dalla Villa e alla partenza. FRIGOBAR Ogni camera è dotata di frigobar con bibite, alcolici e snack. Giornalmente si provvede al reintegro delle consumazioni che verranno addebitate sul conto. Al check-out si prega verificare tali addebiti. CASSAFORTE Ogni camera è dotata di una cassaforte ad uso gratuito con combinazione elettronica personalizzata. La direzione declina ogni responsabilità per gli oggetti preziosi o valori lasciati incustoditi nelle camere. 9 ARIA CONDIZIONATA E RISCALDAMENTO L’hotel ha un impianto centralizzato per l’impianto di aria condizionata in estate e riscaldamento in autunno-inverno ma ogni stanza è dotata di controllo e regolazione individuale della temperatura e velocità della ventola. L EI S U RE LU C C A La città fu fondata attorno al VI secolo a.C. dagli Etruschi e divenne successivamente un importante municipium romano. La massima fioritura si ebbe a partire dal Medioevo e nel Rinascimento: ancora oggi Lucca (la “città dalle cento chiese”) conserva intatta l’antica magia di strade, piazze, palazzi e torri, tra cui spicca quella dei Guinigi sulla cui sommità svettano i caratteristici lecci. Suggestivo e ricco di fascino il centro storico, interamente racchiuso nelle maestose Mura alberate cinquecentesche (4,2 km). Da non perdere la cattedrale di San Martino, la chiesa di San Michele in foro, la chiesa di San Frediano, il Battistero di San Giovanni e la cinquecentesca chiesa di San Paolino. Suggestivo l’antico Anfiteatro romano, in origine esterno alla città, trasformato in piazza dall’architetto Lorenzo Nottolini (1830). Particolarmente interessante la visita ai Musei nazionali di Palazzo Mansi e di Villa Guinigi come anche al Museo della Cattedrale.

Una visita meritano anche la casa natale di Giacomo Puccini e l’ottocentesco Orto Botanico.

M E D IA VA L L E D E L S ER C H IO E G A R FA G NA NA BARGA e dintorni La cittadina sorge su una collina dominata dal maestoso Duomo di impronta romanica al cui interno si ammirano le terrecotte del Della Robbia e uno straordinario pulpito in marmo del duecento con mirabili bassorilievi. Barga, ricca di testimonianze storiche, conserva un fascino particolare con le sue piccole strade tortuose, i suoi angoli caratteristici e la pianta medievale. Bella anche la pieve romanica del paesino di Loppia (VI secolo). Vale la pena di visitare a Castelvecchio la casa-museo di Giovanni Pascoli dove il poeta trascorse molti anni della sua vita.

C A S TE L N U O VO D I G A R FA G NA NA e d i n t o r n i Il capoluogo garfagnino risale all’epoca longobarda. Nella piazza principale sorge la bella Rocca Ariostesca di origine medievale dove soggiornò l’Ariosto, chiamato dai Duchi Estensi a governare la Garfagnana nel 1522. Nel Museo archeologico, suddiviso in due mostre permanenti sul “Mesolitico della Garfagnana” e la “Montagna e il suo popolo”, interessanti testimonianze della storia della vallata. Da visitare inoltre il Duomo del Quattrocento ricco di opere pregevoli e, nelle vicinanze del paese, la superba fortezza cinquecentesca di Montalfonso, costruita come rifugio per la città in caso d’assalto. Un vero paradiso per escursionisti ed alpinisti è il vicino “Parco regionale delle Alpi Apuane” che si estende sulla catena.

C A S TI G L IONE D I G A R FA G NA NA e d i n t o r n i La rocca di questo paese fortificato è del XIII secolo e si conservano ancora le antiche mura che cingono la città in un quadrilatero. Tra le località più suggestive della zona Casone di Profecchia e il Passo delle Radici soprattutto per chi ama sciare. Da visitare San Pellegrino in Alpe, paese collocato in splendida posizione panoramica sulla cresta dell’Appennino, con il Museo etnografico “Don Luigi Pellegrini” che raccoglie oltre 3000 oggetti, preziose testimonianze della civiltà contadina.

Le Alpi Apuane costituiscono l’area dei rilievi marmiferi nella provincia di Lucca e il marmo rappresenta la base principale dell’economia dell’Alta Versilia. Al tempo stesso le Alpi Apuane meritano di essere visitate per i pregi alpinistici e panoramici. Un itinerario di poche decine di chilometri porta dal litorale alle montagne attraverso suggestive “valli bianche”. Pietrasanta è il capoluogo della Versilia storica, una microregione della Provincia e centro della lavorazione artistica del marmo, che ha carattere prevalentemente artigiano ed è praticata negli studi dei maestri d’arte locali. I “marmorari” pietrasantesi sono molto apprezzati.

H o t e l h i s t o ry La Principessa is situated at the base of the hills surrounding Lucca where many parks and gardens jealously hide the austere architecture of palaces and mansions of the noblest and most illustrious families of the region. Priding itself as being the oldest origins, it was in fact the home and court of Castruccio Castracani (1281-1328) Lord and Duke of Lucca, man of arms and mercenary captain who served just the Emperor Arrigo VII and then Ludovico the Bavarian, who succeeded in passing from history into legend according to the tradition that holds that Machiavelli, impressed with his manner, found him the model for the Ideal Prince.

The appearance of the mansion in those days – an illustrated description of it can be found in Sercambi’s chronicles – was quite different to what it is now. Today you can still see, almost intact, the little church situated along the wall of the park. During the restauration works in 1970 traces of that Gothic mansion were found, together with fragments of frescoes that Castruccio had ordered for the main sitting room in order to celebrate the coronation of Ludovico the Bavarian. Since its construction (around 1320) the mansion has undergone many changes due to the requirement of its various owners. However, it has kept its rare and magical atmosphere the privilege of historical things. It is not surprising then that many noblemen and diplomats of the Napoleon Court, who came to Lucca with the Princess Elisa Baciocchi Bonaparte in 1805, made their ancestral homes in the surrounding hills. The building acquired its present appearance during the early years of the 19th century. The elegant simple design of its facade and reconstruction of its garden in the French style – filled with masses of shrubs symetrically distributed along the 13th century walls – make it a princely mansion. The Borbone-Parma, the last reigning family of the little Lucca State, transformed it into a place worthy of their prestigious and illustrious guests, and some unsolved mystery involving and intriguing love affairs gave the name to the hotel. La Principessa has become an exclusive and confortable hotel, a resting place for the illustrious pilgrims who, in the steps of discriminating travellers from all corners of the world, come to visit and admire the wonders of Tuscany.

RESTAURANT 9 The Restaurant of Villa La Principessa is located on the ground floor of the Villa in the corner of the “Sala del Camino”. During the summer time the dinner is served in an open air space. Dinner time is from 7.45 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. The Chef is delighted to present “his menu” with dishes of national cuisine enhanced by first-fruits and flavors typical of our area and the Maitre will be pleased to suggest the right combination thanks to the wide selection of national and local wines of our wine-cellar. If you have special needs please inform directly the Chef who will assist you in every preference. The restaurant offers a limited number of seats, so we kindly ask you to book your table in advance. In the summer our Guests can enjoy a light lunch outdoors by the pool area served from 12.00 to 2.00 p.m., please always book your table in advance. BAR SERVICE 9 Our Bar service is open from 10:30 till 23:00 – extra charge for room service. SWIMMINGPOOL 9 Our Swimming is open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 19:00 p.m. during the summer. Our guests can ask for bath towels to the bathing attendant at the pool. Each guest receives one bath towel and in case of extra requests we will charge Euro 3,00 each. In summer light lunch will be served in the garden by the pool; we kindly ask you to reserve the table.

ROOM KEY The room key has to be released at the reception desk anytime you get out and at the checkout. MINIBAR Each room has got a mini bar with soft drinks, alcoholics, and snacks. We provide daily to replace the refreshments that we will charge directly on your bill. Please, check your bill at departure. SAFE-BOX Each room has got a free charge safe box with personal code at our guests’ disposal. L EI S U RE LU C C A Founded by the Etruscans in the VI century before Christ, the city later became an important Roman municipium. At the height of its prosperity from the Middle Age and throughout the Reinassance, Lucca (the “town of hundred churches”) has preserved intact the ancient mystery of its streets, squares, palaces and towers. The most conspicuous tower is the Guinigi one with its holm-oaks growing out from the top. Rich in history, the charming old-town centre is completely surrounded by the imposing, tree-lined, 16th century town walls (4,2 km). Worth visiting are the cathedral of San Martino, the churches of San Michele in foro and San Frediano, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the XVI century church of San Paolino.

Impressive is the Roman anphitheatre dating back to the II century A.D. which was originally outside the town and converted into a square by the architect Lorenzo Nottolini (1830).Particularly interesting is the visit to the National Museums of Palazzo Mansi and Villa Guinigi as to the Cathedral Museum. Don’t miss to visit Giacomo Puccini’s birthhouse and the XIX century Botanical Garden.

B A R G A a n d i t s su r r o u n d i n gs Situated on a hillside, the city is dominated by its imposing Romanesque Cathedral where it is possible to admire terracotta works by Della Robbia and an outstanding XIII century marble pulpit in beautiful bas-relief. Rich in historical heritage, with its narrow and winding streets, characteristic corners and medieval layout, Barga has a particular charm of its own. There is also a fine Romanesque parish church at Loppia (VI century). Well worth visiting is Giovanni Pascoli’s house and museum at Castelvecchio where the poet lived for many years.

C A S TE L N U O VO D I G A R FA G NA NA Dating from the time of the Lombards, this is the chief town of the Garfagnana area. In the main square there is a splendid medieval fortress where Ariosto stayed when, in 1522, he was called by the Dukes of Estensi to govern the Garfagnana. At the archeological museum there are two permanent exhibitions on “the Mesolithic period in the Garfagnana” and on “the mountain and its hinabitants” that give an interesting insight into the history of the valley. Visit also the XV century cathedral with its wealth of important works and not far from the village the superb XVII century Montalfonso fortress built as a refuge for the townspeople in times of siege. The nearby “Apuan Alps Regional Park” offers a real paradise for hikers and climbers.

C A S TI G L IONE D I G A R FA G NA NA The fortress here dates from the XIII century and the four sides of the town are still enclosed by its ancient walls. Casone di Profecchia and the Passo delle Radici are just two of the most attractive places in this area, especially for skiing enthusiasts. Situated on the crest of the Appennines, San Pellegrino in Alpe offers splendid views and at the “Don Luigi Pellegrini” ethnographic museum there are over 3000 objects on display, valuable evidence of its rural culture.

The Apuan Alps consitute the area of marble extraction in the Province of Lucca and marble represents the principle basis of the economy of Upper Versilia. At the same time, the Apuan Alps deserve to be visited for their alpine worths and panoramas. An itinerary of few kilometres takes one from the coast to the mountains through suggestive “white valleys”. Pietrasanta presents the typical characteristics of historic Versilia of which it is the main city. Versilia, in fact, a micro-region of the Province, is famous for the artistic working of marble. The “marmorari” of Pietrasanta are very much appreciated.
