ZERMATT Z E R M AT T

Zermatt - Matterhorn The Indulgence Destination…

Zermatt - this is the most popular mountain village, with the world’s most photographed mountain! In the destination Zermatt – Matterhorn, which includes the villages Zermatt, Täsch and Randa, alpinists, ski fans, bon vivants and nature lovers meet. Fascinated, alpinists still climb the Matterhorn (4’478 metres above sea level) in the path of its first ascender Edward Whymper, who managed to reach the mountain’s summit via the renowned Hörnligrat in 1865.

® Luxury Hotel Publications - Novembre 2020

Guests conveniently reach the centre of the alpine village by train. Zermatt has always been car-free. Walking is the transport of choice, both during summer and winter, or you can take a horse carriage or one of the small electric taxis that take the guests’ luggage through the narrow streets to the hotels and holiday apartments. 360 kilometres of ski runs await winter sports enthusiasts from early in the morning until late afternoon, both on the Swiss as well as on the Italian side of the Matterhorn, where the mountain is called Monte Cervino. The summer skiing area on the Theodul Glacier boasts 21 kilometres of runs with guaranteed snow. In other words: Zermatt offers 365 days of skiing per year. But winter hikers and snowshoe enthusiasts can also enjoy the snowy, glistening landscape. In the summertime, one can chose to walk on more than 400 km of marked hiking and walking trails. Top quality gastronomy awaits the guests in the village, in the hotels and on the hiking paths and ski runs in the mountains: 18 restaurants combine a total of 255 Gault Millau points. Many Zermatt hotels and restaurants are family-owned and confidently live their tradition, offering their guests - which include up to 80 percent regular guests of many years - high quality service. New hotels, and also those with a history, display state-of-the-art construction standards. Many of these are characterised by alpine chic, combining stone, glass and often old and well-kept wood. For those who, apart from indulgence and exercise, also enjoy shopping, we recommend a peaceful stroll along the Bahnhofstrasse. In the evenings, guests and locals can choose from a large number of clubs, bars und dancing bars for long nights out.

Restaurants & Bars…

Zermatt has a wide range of restaurants and bars to offer and listed below are a small selection that we recommend. In the Chalets, Wednesday night is the chef ’s night off. We ask that you eat in a local restaurant and we would be delighted to make any reservations for you prior to your arrival. For lunch on the mountain, reservations can be made by your Chalet Manager, though if you are a large group we advise making your bookings prior to your arrival in the chalet. We can advise on restaurant locations, styles and prices to find the perfect dining experience for you.

Lunch Chez Vrony – Situated in Findeln, this lovely old wooden barn offers fantastic cuisine. With a glorious

Findlerhof – This is quite simply a magical restaurant. Perched in tiny Findeln, between the Sunnegga and Blauherd ski areas, the view of the Matterhorn is truly stunning, the food superb and the staff courteous and efficient. If you are in Zermatt, you simply must visit this restaurant. Zum See – This restaurant, found in the centuries-old hamlet of Zum See has an established reputation as one of Zermatt’s best, meaning that booking is essential. Wonderful food is lovingly prepared by the owners and served in intimate and rustic surroundings. Fluhalp – On the way to Gant, this mountain restaurant offers some of the finest traditional Alpine

food and an exquisite panorama of the Matterhorn and ski area. Live music everyday gives it a fun atmosphere.

Blatten – Found in the idyllic hamlet next to the chapel below Furi, this top-class restaurant run by Leander and Simone Taugwalder is a must. Try their local truffle specialities or superb mushroom soup topped with puffed pastry. Al Bosco, Riffelalp – An elegant mountain restaurant, with a magnificent sun terrace situated at the famous Hotel Riffelalp Resort Accessible by the Gornergrat Railway, this is a wonderful choice for Skiers and non-skiers alike.

® Luxury Hotel Publications - Novembre 2020

mixture of the old and the modern, the classical and the quirky, sofas on the terrace and intimate nooks and crannies for serious dining, this really is the ultimate place to stop for lunch after a hard morning’s ski. The sun terrace is famous for its Matterhorn view, sheep skins and al fresco dining.

Restaurants & Bars… Dinner Chez Heini – a unique dining experience. Let owner/chef/poet/musician Dan Daniel delight you

with local (from his father’s flocks) lamb specialities, surrounded by photos and artwork celebrating Zermatt and Dan Daniell’s artistic career. Each night he will perform a selection of his songs for you with a showing of his latest films and music videos during desert.

Brasserie Uno – a relative newcomer in the village, Brasserie Uno describes itself as ‘a casual fine

dining restaurant’; warmly hosted by Swedish owner Andreas and with talented Chefs Luis Romo & Mark Ruiz-Kissling in the kitchen, this cosy dining experience has attracted great reviews and offers a new dining experience for Zermatt, with creative international dishes using seasonal and regional ingredients.

Le Gitan – Highly recommended by many who know the resort well. Whilst it is less formal than other restaurants, the interior is very cosy, with an open fireplace and room for no more than 50 diners. With a wide selection of Swiss and regional specialties available, grilled meats are the house specialty. The grilled beef, veal, game, and pork dishes are all richly garnished and impressively presented. Whymperstube – This is the place in Zermatt for fondue and raclette. Situated in one of Zermatt’s

oldest hotels, with the glorious Edwardian-style dining room named after Edward Whymper, the first person to climb the Matterhorn, this is the most evocative spot to savour top Swiss specialities.

Schaeferstubli – Underneath the Hotel Julen, this is a superb spot for traditional alpine dining, with a stübli-style atmosphere, and a perfect place for traditional fondue, raclette and local meat dishes. Lamb is the speciality, selected from Paul Julen’s flocks.

® Luxury Hotel Publications - Novembre 2020

After Seven – 2 Michelin Stars with Chefs Ivo Adam and Florian Neubauer and their team. Their gourmet cuisine has received many accolades and consists of a creative mix of native and cosmopolitan, sometimes exotically inspired, though always market fresh and seasonal.

Sunlit Dinner at Klein Matterhorn – If you have not had your fill of the mountains in the daytime, every Thursday, enjoy the experience of Dining at 3,883m with Asian Cuisine at the Matterhorn Glacial Paradise. Warm clothes are essential as you view the sunset from the highest observation platform in Europe. The night-time Cable ride back down to Zermatt is a treat in itself.

Restaurants & Bars…

Bars & Après Elsie’s Bar – Spiritual home to snails, oysters and mountains of champagne, Elsie’s Bar is one of the most famous après-ski haunts in the Alps. The Hennu Stall – Situated on the piste down from Furi, this is one of the liveliest après-ski bars in Zermatt. With music on the terrace and a live band inside playing all the old favourites, there is something for everyone. CERVO – Trendy après ski bar located on the Valley run from the Sunnegga - Rothorn ski area. Daily live music, DJs, food and drinks. This is a popular end to everyone’s ski day.

The Papperla Pub – Reporters rate the Papperla as one of the trendiest après ski spots in town and one of most popular meeting points in Zermatt – be prepared for some loud music and little space to move! Hotel Post – The Brown Cow and Papa Caesar’s can be guaranteed to provide some fun and frolics after a hard day on the slopes. Snowboat – Near the Sunnegga lift, the Snowboat offers lively après ski with local bands, as well as

areas to sit out on the fore-deck to rest those weary legs. Later in the evening, venture into the small discreet downstair venue for special cocktails.

Harry’s Bar – Located in the centre of the village by the riverside, this is a popular bar with a heated outdoor area and a lively crowd!

The Broken – The name says it all. Situated underneath the Hotel Post, popular with young and old alike, for dancing on the barrels, laughing and staying up far too late! Loft Lounge – Clubbing for the over 25s - the best mix of the 80ies, 90ies and today’s chart music

ensures a filled dance floor and a cheerful party mood. The Loft Lounge is our club for the young and the young at heart.
