ROKUNI: MORE THAN JUST A RESTAURANT

A new sushi bar is set to make its debut this season too, featuring tastings and other special events.

But to focus entirely on the gastronomic goodies would be to do Rokuni a disservice. There’s more to this venue than meets the eye.

Its fabulous c liffside pool and deck space has been renovated and revamped for the new season to cater to larger groups and more guests. Day passes are available in the form of packages for couples, families and friends, allowing guests to experience all that Rokuni has to offer.

FROM RATS TO RICHES

It’s been described as the Caribbean’s greatest rebirth story. The incredible transformation of Redonda from a barren hulk of rock to a thriving wildlife haven captured the hearts and minds of naturalists and nature lovers the world over.

Antigua and Barbuda’s lesser known third island has no resorts, no amenities and no beaches. What makes this milelong volcanic isle so special is its status as a key nesting site for migrating birds and the home of wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.

Redonda’s status as a sanctum for everything from red-footed boobies to critically endangered reptiles now looks set to be preserved by law.

The uninhabited tiny islet is to be officially designated as a protected area by the government, safeguarding it for generations to come.

W hen environmentalists first raised the idea of entirely removing thousands of invasive black rats and a herd of feral goats threatening its wildlife, it seemed ambitious at best.

Work began in 2016 to relocate around 75 long-horned goats - introduced by early colonists 300 years ago – which had steadily eaten almost all of the vegetation that once attracted nesting birds. The absence of most of the island’s plants had also left the goats with very little food.

They were corralled and flown by helicopter to farmers in Antigua keen to breed them for their drought-hardy genes.

The most challenging part of the project was the eradication of 6,000 invasive black rats that had arrived with a 19th century guano mining community and were preying on reptiles and eating rare birds’ eggs.

Bait laced with a pesticide irresistible to rats but unpalatable to other creatures was laboriously laid in nooks and crannies across the landscape.

The work was undertaken by the country’s Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) in sync with international partners including Fauna & Flora International (FFI).

FFI has successfully eliminated nonnative mammals from around 25 islands since 1995, but Redonda’s unforgiving topography presented special obstacles.

Severe erosion caused by deforestation had left it dangerously unstable with crumbling precipices and frequent rock falls.

Redonda was officially declared rat and goat-free in July 2018. The team made regular trips back to monitor progress before transportation problems were exacerbated by the Covid pandemic.

Brown boobies with chicks, red-billed tropicbirds, frigates and peregrine falcons were among the sights which greeted them on their return in late 2020.

The EAG’s Shanna Challenger described it as an “emotional moment”.

“It was such a stark contrast to what I saw the first time I went over there in 2016 when the island was literally crumbling into the sea,” she said.

The resurgence of trees and plants

has spawned new populations of wildlife. Numbers of the island’s endemic tree lizard have tripled, while the ground lizard population has soared six-fold.

The island ’s erstwhile 17 plant species have also skyrocketed to 88, including a new ficus tree, cactus and fern, while more than a dozen species of land birds have reappeared.

“It was a very exciting, humbling and amazing moment to see the impacts of our conservation work so obviously and visually displayed,” Challenger recalled.

Last summer, a movie documenting Redonda’s journey from rats to riches was released by the EAG. ‘Redonda: The Road to Recovery’ played at Caribbean Cinemas in Friars Hill Road, preceded by a red carpet premiere.

FFI’s Dr Jenny Daltry said Redonda is today “a model” for how other Caribbean islands where invasive species have devastated indigenous wildlife can be brought back to life.

“Redonda has transformed, right before our eyes and quicker than we’d believed possible, from bare rock into a green jewel of an island,” she said.

“At a time when so much of the news about the state of our planet is understandably downbeat, the rebirth of this island shows that if we give nature a chance, it can and will bounce back.” n

GOING THE DISTANCE FOR ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

Ask any national athlete what it feels like to represent their country on a major international stage and they will likely tell you it’s exhilarating.

For those from a small state like Antigua and Barbuda with limited access to the world class facilities and funding opportunities their counterparts from larger nations take for granted it means even more.

In summer 2022, 13 sportsmen and women from the twin islands got the chance to travel to Birmingham in England to compete in the 2022 Commonwealth Games - and fly the ‘golden sun’ flag 4,000 miles from home.

Despite c laiming no medals, the team recorded several triumphs in the form of new national records and new personal bests, while some made it as far as the semi-finals.

From the colossal mechanical bull that played a starring role in the opening

ceremony to becoming the first large multi-sport event in history to award more medals to women than men, the Games were certainly not short of highlights for those watching.

For sprinter Cejhae Greene, walking into the arena to race in the 100m is an experience he will never forget.

“As we entered the stadium, the crowd went ballistic,” he recalls. “There was just this huge roar. The cheering, the smoke, the lights and the atmosphere were incredible.”

As a professional athlete, Greene is well accustomed to large-scale international meets. But the ambience in Birmingham, he says, surpassed even Rio during the 2016 Summer Olympics.

And he almost didn’t make it.

Greene was one of three of the Antigua and Barbuda team to test positive for Covid upon arrival at the Games.

Af ter months of torturous training

and a gruelling regimen of early nights and a strict diet, the prospect of missing out was galling.

“I could not believe it; I had just had a negative test because I was coming from the World Athletics Championships so when I got a positive result I was shocked. We did another test and that was positive too,” Greene says.

“ We had to be isolated but Birmingham did a really good job of covering all bases, keeping us calm and making sure we could stay on form and still practice as much as possible.”

Mercifully, he tested negative in time to compete. Triple jumper Taeco O’Garro and boxer Kagra Ryan had also returned positive tests upon arrival. While O’Garro was able to compete, Ryan’s event was sadly too soon and she was unable to participate in her first Commonwealth Games.

W hile Greene, who had been slated to reach the finals in the 100m, admits to some disappointment to not making it past the semis, he’s philosophical about it.

“ That’s just sport,” he says. “It doesn’t always go the way you want but it wasn’t due to lack of preparation.

“It was such a great experience going out on the track and the way the crowd reacted. At this level, most of us are professionals so to make the semi-finals was nothing short of incredible.”

For many athletes, events like the Commonwealth Games also afford the opportunity to visit a new city and catch up with friends from the sporting circuit. Also racing was fellow sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, the fastest British woman on record and a close pal of Greene.

He adds: “I’m really grateful to have been able to compete in Birmingham and I’m looking forward to competing there again one day.

“ The whole trip was absolutely amazing. The people in Birmingham were so friendly and welcoming, especially when we told them we were there for the Games.”

Swimmer Mitchell created a new national record in the men’s 100m freestyle after recording a time of 51.42 seconds to win his heat.

Cheering him on from the stands were the Antigua and Barbuda runners. There was elation as Mitchell finished first and the TV cameras whipped round to capture his teammates brandishing the national flag.

His feat was all the more impressive as the Games came weeks after Mitchell graduated from the University of Plymouth with a 2:1 in business management.

“ The last year at university interfered a lot with training so I only had six weeks to get ready for the Games. My performance was good but not the best,” he says.

Mitchell finished 17th overall in the 50m and 27th in the 100m.

Like Greene, he testifies to the event’s intoxicating atmosphere.

“It was 110 percent the whole time. The crowd was totally sold out at the pool, and also the opening ceremony which was amazing. The mechanical bull was incredible to see in person.

“I also got the opportunity to be a flag bearer which was a great honour.”

For sprinter Cejhae Greene, walking into the arena to race in the 100m is an experience he will never forget.

Boxer Alston Ryan put in an impressive performance too, winning his two fights convincingly before narrowly missing out on a bronze medal. And Wuilliez made history by becoming the first Antiguan and Barbudan swimmer to advance to the semi-finals of an international swim meet.

Sprinter Darion Skerritt also reached the semi-finals in the 200m in his first ever Commonwealth Games, while simultaneously recording a new personal best. And O’Garro finished 11th overall in the triple jump.

Lloyd, who holds the national record in both the 100m and 200m sprints, says

one aspect that set the Games apart from other major events, like the 2020 Summer Olympics in which she also participated, was the large number of athletes from the Caribbean.

“It gave it a different feel,” she says. “It was a great melting pot.”

That was an image reflected on the streets of Birmingham too.

“ When we did go into the city there were Caribbean vibes; you could hear it when people were talking,” she smiles.

“I loved the vibes in Birmingham; you could really tell they are into their track. The stadium was full at 8am and that makes you compete even harder.”

Lloyd says she was “really proud” to reach the semi-finals after what had been a “long season”. Like Greene, she also competed in the World Athletics Championships in the US shortly before heading to England.

And there’s little sign of that intensity abating just yet. Lloyd is now in the throes of rigorous pre-season training from her Tennessee base where she is at university.

She also has high hopes for her compatriots at future sporting events.

“I just really hope more of our athletes get the chance to compete,” she adds.

“ We have a lot of talent in Antigua and Barbuda and I hope we can take an even bigger team next time.” n

ECLECTIC BEATS, VINTAGE VIBES

ONE OF ANTIGUA’S MOST ELECTRIFYING BANDS, THE STRAYS TALK ROOTS, REGGAE –AND WHY THEY NEVER RUN WITH THE PACK

Interviewing The Strays feels a bit like being invited onto the hip kids’ table at high school.

In addition to the fact they ooze cool, the plaintiff riffs and ruminative lyrics of early 90s bangers like Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ and Chili Peppers’ ‘Under The Bridge’ are enough to transport you straight back to the days of teenage angst and lumpy mashed potato.

In actual fact, the tunes they perform are as eclectic as the band members themselves. And collectively – like today on the beach at Catherine’s Café - they’re a tour de force, not least because they’re quite unlike any other band on Antigua’s entertainment scene.

The Strays may have their roots in rock but these days the vibes include reggae, soca, blues, jazz and funk too; their diversity is linked to the multifarious musical backgrounds of each of the six members.

The band ’s name has a double meaning, with nods to both the convergence of musicians from other groups and The Strays’ very first performance in 2016 at a fundraiser for a local animal charity.

The event in aid of Parham-based dog and cat shelter PAAWS had been organised by singer Adam Kirby’s brother Adrian. ‘The Strays’ was a last-minute moniker invented by Adrian as the original ensemble prepared to walk on stage.

Most of those erstwhile members have since strayed off again. Today the band includes Adam, who’s a personal

trainer when he’s not on the mic’, and manager and guitarist Hani Hechme, a sound engineer whose Irie Fire studio in Hodges Bay is a favoured haunt for some of the region’s biggest names.

In late 2017, the band were rehearsing shortly after Hurricane Irma devastated Barbuda.

“Some of the guys took a smoke break, and I think it may have been Ed [George, former member] or Hani who started playing a Bob Marley song so I started singing it,” Adam recalls. “We kind of looked at each other for a second as if to say, this actually sounds really good, maybe we should sing some more reggae.”

One of Adam’s clients was helping organise the Caribbean Strong concert in October that year to raise money for Barbuda. An informal conversation later and The Strays were booked to open for Shaggy and soca legend Machel Montano.

There’s also fellow sound engineer, recording artist and beat producer Javan Murdoch, bassist Tony Mayers and drummer Nathan Dinard, who both work in banking, and keyboardist Khadijah Simon, a photographer.

Face to face they’re refreshingly down to earth, amiable, and eager to chat. They’ll even give considered answers to admittedly trite questions like, if you could perform with any musician living or dead… (We couldn’t resist. If you’re interested: Jimi Hendrix, Bruno Mars, Bono and – closer to home – Antiguan jazz guitarist Roland Prince.)

Their foray into reggae from rock came about as organically as their union.

“Meanwhile, I hadn’t been on a big stage since way back when I sang for [iconic Antiguan band] Burning Flames. I figured hey, we got two weeks, let’s just throw caution to the wind and do it.

“I put together a really nice reggae medley with the band that would fill our set for that evening perfectly. We rehearsed and rehearsed, but we were all still pretty nervous I think; I know I was. I was either going to make a complete a*s of myself, or die trying not to.

“ This show was to be broadcast all over the world, live. I don’t think I could have chosen a higher pressured event for our debut if I tried.”

Happily, things went smoothly.

“ The night went really well, we got a lot of great feedback, and two weeks later we were asked to open for Wyclef Jean at a private event on Jumby Bay. The

rest is history - we have been performing together ever since,” Adam says.

Despite their sundr y origins, The Strays’ esprit de corps just might be the secret to their musical alchemy.

“I absolutely love playing with the guys and girl in the band; there is, like, zero egos flying around, we all just love music and thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the gift of being able to play it,” Adam continues.

Tony concurs.

“I love the chemistry and camaraderie. We feel each other’s energy; playing with the band is the best high you can get,” he says.

There’s an “unspoken communication that happens” on stage, explains Hani. “That’s what I enjoy the most - the group just knows how to play with each other.

“ The connection with the crowd is also a big part of it; when they’re really into it, it’s a shared experience.”

For Nathan, the sweeping setlists give him a chance to challenge himself.

“I enjoy executing the music. Plus, you don’t hear that kind of music anywhere else in Antigua. ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is something you would hear on American radio. To get the opportunity to play that here is great,” he smiles.

As proud Antiguans, The Strays are some of the country’s biggest ambassadors.

Throughout the season, music lovers can catch The Strays fortnightly at Catherine’s Café on Pigeon Beach, among other venues. Songs guaranteed to get people up and dancing range from 80s classics ‘Tainted Love’ – a richer, bassier version than the original – to Jamiroquai’s ‘Cosmic Girl’ and The Verve’s ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’, the latter another unexpected addition to their heterogeneous repertoire.

Hani ’s favourites to perform include Chris Isaak’s haunting ‘Wicked Game’ and the eminently nostalgic 1985 hit

‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ by Tears for Fears.

For Khadijah, it’s the irresistibly funky groove of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition’. Her enthusiasm for the industry is palpable.

“ When I’m not playing music I’m listening to it,” she grins. “Seeing the crowd enjoying our music is the biggest thing for me. We are helping them to make memories.”

The Strays attract a solid local following wherever they go but for the tourists lucky enough to catch a gig, it’s a holiday highlight.

“ When the tourism season is really kicking, the island’s social aspect is hard to beat,” Tony says. “Antigua has a real personality for that kind of stuff.”

As proud Antiguans, The Strays are some of the country’s biggest ambassadors.

“I just love how laidback it is here. The pace of life is much slower than other countries – you can have your bubble,” says Hani.

“It’s a good place to be disconnected from the worries of larger scale modern life,” picks up Javan. “Because things move at a slower pace we miss some of the more frantic or hectic energy from world events. We are kind of tucked away

in a corner and no one is really paying attention to us,” he adds.

The countr y’s beaches undoubtedly garner more press than its rhythmical offerings. But as music buffs will testify, the twin island nation is something of a pioneer in the sector.

“Antigua is a really special place when it comes to music. This is the land of Burning Flames for goodness sakes, the best calypso/soca music ever made in the Caribbean,” Adam says.

“ They were the first band to use a drum machine, which took traditional calypso music and turned it on its head, paving the way for what is now known as soca.”

Getting the chance to step in as lead singer when main man Onyan left, after growing up listening to them, was a moment of “shock and awe”, he recalls, followed by some “amazing memories”.

“I’ve always been a bit of a loner and singing has always been my company, my friend, my peace,” Adam adds.

“I honestly feel so grateful for the gift I’ve been given and I never take it for granted, and I never take The Strays for granted.

“ We are so lucky to be able to go out there and play for people.” n

ART GALLERY: A WHOLE EXPERIENCE

Gilly Gobinet’s enchanting space stirs the senses and captivates the soul

Set among tropical gardens, Gilly Gobinet’s working Art Gallery offers scenes as pretty as a picture. And that’s before one even begins to browse the delightful paintings on display.

Inside the entrance, one wall is devoted to nudes, another to semiabstract paintings of boats. Further on, an effervescent collection of acrylics and watercolours, mostly inspired by natureflowers, fruit, birds etc… adorn the walls.

In the kitchen, cartoons vie for position among pineapples, local veggie produce and classic yachts. And in the bathroom, a papier maché clown offers visitors lavatory paper with one tiny scarlet hand.

In the background, the effortless timbre of Mozart adds one final whimsical flourish.

Barely a square foot of Gilly’s Gallery, on the banks of Fitches Creek – a short drive from the international airport – has been excluded from this bacchanalia of colour and canvas. Hand-painted murals adorn exterior walls and even the periphery of the swimming pool.

“Inspiration is never lacking when you’re surrounded by all of this,” she says brightly, gesturing towards the sea and the pots of brilliant bougainvillea and other vibrant tropical flora; at least seven species of tropical birds, the numerous

bananaquits being the most shrill, feed from the dishes on the veranda.

Anyone visiting the Gallery will be treated to a full tour of the property, beginning with the delightful Courtyard at the entrance right down to the dock with its painted table and comfy chairs at the water’s edge, shaded by an enormous mangrove tree: a whole experience not to be missed!

Inside are hundreds more original works, in all shapes and sizes, mainly in acrylic on canvas or wood, and watercolours, large and small, mounted in standard frame sizes. Nearly all are suitcase-friendly or can be shipped internationally.

Because of Gilly’s training as a biologist, she is very curious about how every plant or animal she paints is made before painting it. This may also explain her love of nature. She also strongly feels that a balanced composition is one of the most important aspects of any work of art.

W hile most of the pieces exhibited are the result of her own impulse, much of Gilly’s work is commissioned, particularly her portraits of pet dogs and cats for which she donates 10 percent to local animal charity Dogs and Cats of Antigua. Her love of animals includes her own five pet dogs! n

ANTIGUA CARNIVAL: THE RETURN OF THE CARIBBEAN’S GREATEST SUMMER FESTIVAL

Little encapsulates the spirit of the Caribbean like carnival.

Last summer, the country’s indefatigable, revelry-loving residents proved pandemic-related pauses on the festivities had done nothing to dampen their ardour.

Late July and early August saw the welcome return of the hip-wiggling, joyous jamboree that remains an integral part of local culture.

A couple of prime events were absent this year, such as the much-loved ‘Panorama’ steelpan contest, which was replaced by a series of smaller performances staged in backyards and other informal venues island-wide.

But initial plans to move the parades

out of the city centre to ease traffic congestion were later overturned and the vibrant spectacle of T-Shirt Mas’, along with the main Carnival Monday and Tuesday parades, once again transformed the streets of St John’s into a kaleidoscopic display of colour and pageantry.

Hallmark shows such as Party Monarch and Calypso Monarch – which see the nation’s musical stars compete for the crowns – also returned in all their upbeat glory.

The ear liest Carnival celebrations in Antigua and Barbuda took place almost 200 years ago to celebrate freedom from slavery. The festivities in their current form date back to 1957 when costumes

were – ahem – significantly less skimpy. Back then, plantation-style dresses, witches and skeletons, soldiers and majorettes were among the themes seen on the road.

These days, despite the evolution to feathers, sequins and bikinis tiny enough to make your grandmother faint in shock, many of the costumes are still painstakingly stitched by hand, setting Antigua Carnival apart from many of its Caribbean counterparts.

Traditional ensembles like the ‘moko jumbie’ – a ghost or spirit that has its roots in Africa – could also be seen letting off steam along the route. n

SO TEAK: QUALITY FURNITURE THAT LASTS A LIFETIME

There’s no doubt Antigua’s abundant sunshine can reap dividends for your health and wellbeing. Unfortunately the sun, coupled with high humidity and tropical showers, can wreak havoc on your furniture.

W hen decking out a new home, or renovating an existing one, it pays to ensure your prized pieces are tough enough to stand up to the unforgiving Caribbean climes. Not only is it ultimately more cost-effective to choose items that guarantee longevity, it’s better for the environment too.

Two years ago, Danish couple Tom and Camilla Barnes gathered up their possessions, and a dollop of Covidinspired laissez-faire, and swapped the vibrant urban scenes of Singapore for the halcyon lifestyle of Antigua and Barbuda.

Happily for the twin island nation’s residents, another thing they brought with them was a Singaporean-based outdoor living furniture business which has been in operation for more than 25 years.

The company’s Antiguan offshoot SOTEAK is now in its second season and is already proving a hit with islanders nationwide.

Luxury Locations Magazine caught up with Tom to tell us more about SOTEAK’s high quality teak and wicker

pieces – and why they’re ideal for our sun-soaked environs.

First things first, how did the name SOTEAK come about?

‘SO stands for Scandinavian Oriental because the design is modern Danish but built with Indonesian-Oriental quality.

“From living in Singapore we have strong links with designers there who have 25 years’ experience in the furniture business. They manufacture in Indonesia and export their items across the world.

“In Singapore, their pieces can be found in many private houses and condominiums, as well as hotels including the Mandarin Oriental, the Four Seasons and the Fairmont, plus a host of restaurants, because they last so well.

“ While the company has been going for many years, it is completely new to Antigua.”

What kind of items do you provide?

“One of our flagship products is a chunky live-edge solid teak table which we can do in almost any size and with a range of different table leg styles.

“ We do outdoor living products, like sofas, loungers and large dining tables with chairs as well as bar stools and side tables. We also have some homeware

pieces, such as lanterns and teak cutting boards. We sell single items straight from our studio on island as well as bespoke and larger custom orders for villas, refurbishments, hotels and restaurants.

“ We first brought a few pieces here six years ago when my in-laws bought a family holiday home in Turtle Bay. We have personally used these products in our own homes in Singapore and Denmark as well as Antigua, so we know personally how well they last in harsh environments.

“ We wanted furniture that would last forever. We realised that if we had those concerns, everybody else probably did too - and SOTEAK was born.”

What makes SOTEAK pieces so durable?

“We use teak because it lasts forever – or at least way longer than you will need it for – and it is termite-resistant.

“ The wicker is also very durable. People don’t believe me when I say it will last for decades. While other types of wicker get eaten alive in the sun and only last two seasons, ours is polyethylenebased and is completely UV-resistant. You can leave it outside all year round, even in the rain; we personally do and it still looks like new.”

What about maintenance?

“Teak naturally greys so to maintain its new look it can be cleaned seasonally with a teak cleaner which we supply, before putting another coat of sealant on it.

“But even without doing that, the wood will still last. You can leave it outside for 10 years and still easily bring it back to its former glory.”

Who are your clients?

“The reaction since we set up business has been great. We have been working with a number of large private villas,

Ah yes, the prices. Expensive, right? “They’re actually more affordable than you might think. Because we bring everything in directly from the suppliers (who are also family friends) there are no middle men.

“ You also have to bear in mind that the cost of shipping and taxes are already accounted for, so the prices in the catalogue are final. Taking all the extras into account, SOTEAK works out to 3050 percent cheaper than importing - plus we will deliver anywhere on island.”

How long after placing an order can we expect to receive it?

“We have some items already in stock which can be bought directly from our studio. But we give a four to five-month lead time for big custom orders. The pieces take 45-60 days to make and roughly the same time again to ship here. Of course, the longer we have the better we can do.”

“It makes more sense, when spending all that time and money building something really fantastic, to put the exact furniture on the floor plan to start with.

“In our own house, we are completely blurring indoor-outdoor living so the breeze flows straight through, which makes SOTEAK pieces perfect.

“I am happy to work with architects too, so if a client is building a house I can help them plan the furniture around it. I need at least five to six months to get exactly what they want. I love that part of the business and I do that for free to ensure we get it right.”

Business aside, what made you choose Antigua to live?

and homeowners from all around the island who are looking to replace some particular items or even upgrade an entire living space. There have been orders from a few high-end resorts and restaurants too.

“ We are also doing an entire new luxury house in Barbuda, creating everything including custom beds.”

Do you work with existing homes as well as those under construction?

“Absolutely! We really have a passion for what we do and spending time with clients, helping them choose the ideal pieces to complement their home –whether they’re building or just buying new furniture – is what we do best.

“We had been coming here on holiday for more than 10 years. Covid accelerated our plans to do something totally different, so we moved straight from Singapore to here.

“ The outdoor lifestyle is ideal for kids. But more than anything we liked the ambience. We have been expats for a long time; we have also lived in Japan, Australia and the UK. Settling in all those places was nice but there’s a real intimate sense of community here, so we’re here for the long term now!” n

‘LOVE SHOULD NEVER BE A CRIME’

LGBTQ CAMPAIGNERS HAIL VICTORY IN LANDMARK COURT RULING

Local laws that criminalised samesex acts between consenting adults may have been unenforced in modern times, but their effect was no less insidious.

As long as they remained on the statute books they sent a clear message to LGBTQ people that they were wrong, their relationships unacceptable, their way of life depraved. For vulnerable young people struggling with feelings of identity, the ramifications were particularly acute.

In July 2022, campaigners emerged victorious in a long-running battle to overturn sections of the Sexual Offences Act 1995 when Antigua and Barbuda’s High Court of Justice ruled that they contravened constitutionally guaranteed rights to liberty, freedom of expression and protection of personal privacy.

The case was brought by an openly gay Antiguan man in sync with local lobby group Women Against Rape and the Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality (ECADE).

The judgement was a “clear statement that we must stop the stigma and discrimination against our community,” claimant Orden David said.

The lobbyists had argued that the act contributed to hostile healthcare settings

where LGBTQ people often face verbal abuse and confidentiality breaches.

“I have seen first-hand the pain, frustration and anger that the LGBT community experiences when trying to access services,” said WAR’s executive director Alexandrina Wong.

Hopes are now high that the ruling will pave the way for similar moves in neighbouring islands.

ECADE has been fighting to overturn legislation in several of them. In August, the group also saw success in St Kitts and Nevis when the High Court ruled that laws criminalising gay sex violated the right to privacy and freedom of expression.

Seven countries in the Caribbean still criminalise same-sex relations through statutes which have their roots in British colonial-era legislation, namely Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

W hile rarely enforced, the laws marginalise LGBTQ people, while tacitly sanctioning violence and discrimination against them.

In Antigua and Barbuda, on paper at least, gay intimacy could have technically incurred a 15-year prison sentence, while

in Barbados the penalty is cited as life imprisonment.

ECADE’s executive director Kenita Placide said anti-gay laws “legitimise hate speech, discrimination and violence and tear at the fabric of society”.

The group said such legislation had been “weaponised, based on unfounded and unproven fears, against LGBTQ+ people”.

The Caribbean’s strong Christian leanings have long exacerbated gay people’s struggle for equality. Still, the region has experienced a tangible shift in recent years with the rise of a vibrant gay rights movement, including the staging of Pride parades in Barbados and Guyana.

November 2018 saw a centuryold ban on ‘cross-dressing’ in Guyana struck out, while in the same year laws prohibiting homosexuality in Trinidad were also overturned.

Attorney Andrew O’Kola, who played an integral role in the Antigua and Barbuda case, said the court victory brought efforts to end discrimination on the grounds of sexual preference a step closer.

He said the twin island nation was a leader in the Eastern Caribbean for “recognising the illegality of punishing a person for who they love”.

O’Kola told Luxury Locations Magazine the cause was one he felt passionately about.

“If I never achieve anything else as a barrister, I will always hail this victory,” he said, adding: “Consensual love should never be a crime.” n

There was a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on when 10 of the country’s most inventive bartenders went head to head with their jiggers, strainers and muddlers in the local leg of the 2022 Mount Gay International Bartending Competition.

The upbeat event - which placed the world’s oldest distilled rum under the spotlight - played out among the chic surrounds of Catherine’s Café on Pigeon Beach.

Mixologists from restaurants and resorts nationwide showed off their skills in the hope of winning the chance to represent Antigua and Barbuda at the finals in Barbados.

In the end, the flavours, fruits and flowers of Antigua proved the perfect recipe for Jumby Bay’s Kanto George who

was declared the winner with his ‘Paradis’ cocktail.

George expertly blended the Antigua black pineapple – the national fruit – with a syrup infused with hibiscus, a beautiful scarlet flower that, like the pineapple, appears on the country’s coat of arms. They were paired with Mount Gay XO Rum, balanced with fresh lime juice and topped off with a dash of orange bitters.

Each of the entries was unique, featuring unexpected flavour combinations, eye-catching garnishes and inventive use of the iconic Mount Gay Rum.

Altino Spencer, of the Cocobay resort, captured second place with his creation called ‘The Butterfly Effect’ incorporating butterfly pea tea, lavender tea, elderflower liqueur and an egg white to create a pretty presentation with rich colour and

Ashley Henry, the lone female bartender representing Rokuni, was third with her ‘Montar Passion’. Henry gave new life to conventional ingredients, from grapefruit to jalapeños, matched to perfection with Mount Gay XO Rum and her own homemade syrup.

The cocktails were judged by a panel of four experts including Food and Beverage Manager at the Cocobay resort Nigel Martin, USA Marketing Director at the country’s Tourism Authority Dean Fenton, and visiting mixologist from St Maarten Ludovica Telese. Telese also showed off some of her own skills by later whipping up a few Mount Gay cocktails for guests.

occasions claiming runner-up spots, told local media it had been a “tough fight” and it felt great to finally win.

He has almost two decades’ experience in bartending after receiving his first break in the industry many years while working at Big Banana restaurant. When the regular bartender failed to show up for work, George was asked to step in and, despite his limited experience, proved a success.

He has since worked at various venues across Antigua and entered his first mixology contest in 2012, claiming second prize.

George didn’t win the finals in Barbados, attended by bartenders from 10 Caribbean islands, which would have granted him an all-expenses paid trip to England for the London Rum Festival in October. But he retains national bragging rights and the incentive to further perfect his craft.

TECH FIRM MISTIFY IS CREATING SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS AND GIVING LOCAL ANTIGUANS A LEG-UP IN ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST PROFITABLE INDUSTRIES

“ You probably noticed we have a facial recognition system,” Charles Sullivan says cheerily, opening the door to Mistify software development firm of which he is CEO.

In addition to Vermont-born Sullivan, Mistify’s tripartite leadership also includes CFO Alex Badaoui, an Aussie with a background in finance, and US-based chief design officer Shenoa Lawrence.

“ The interesting thing is that while we have brain drain here in Antigua, Silicon Valley is a brain magnet whereby all the people who do software development get sucked in and can’t leave because they get paid so much money there,” Badaoui explains.

“Companies end up outsourcing lower-end projects like web design to places like Antigua because we can deliver at a much lower cost to the client.

Ahem nope. But then not much at this small entity tucked away in a corner of Twist Mall in Redcliffe Street – home to phone repairs shop and a Western Union – is conventional by small Caribbean island standards.

The entr y door technology is just one example of how Mistify is quite unlike anything else found in the twin island nation.

Another is the décor, which frankly is worth a feature of its own. Its industrial ambience with exposed metal, intermittent concrete and splashes of bold colour give it a warehouse-you-couldlive-in vibe.

And that’s entirely intentional for this savvy enterprise which has positioned

“ They need to see the office on the other side and feel they’re working in the same kind of space - like they deserve to be there.”

Mistify, which launched operations in November 2021, currently employs nine full-time staff – none of whom had any previous experience in the industry.

“ They’re delivering a project for Amazon and our developers are writing code for that. So basically we have hired people who previously couldn’t get a job in the industry who are now developing for Amazon,” Badaoui adds.

F inding the right candidates in a 108 square mile island wasn’t without its

challenges.

“A technology generation is considered to be two years, so anything you learned two years ago is almost considered no longer relevant,” Sullivan explains.

“ We had to find employees who seemed like they would be the best learners.”

Junior sof tware development engineer Shaquille Harrigan, from Falmouth, has been with Mistify from the outset.

“I was doing network engineering in the hardware sector before,” he says. “But software was something I was always interested in.

“Getting this opportunity was very, very good. I came with no experience and have learned an incredible amount; I don’t think a school would have been able to give me that level of knowledge and experience. It’s been life-changing.”

Another draw for Mistify’s new recruits is its employee-ownership scheme. Giving them automatic shares in the company – so that they ultimately benefit from the profits – won’t just reap pecuniary rewards but gives staff a vested interest in the business while fostering a

sense of agency.

As fair ly recent expats, Sullivan and Badaoui encountered their fair share of headaches associated with setting up business in a country not their own. (Don’t get them started on the vexations of local banking.)

D uring the peak of the pandemic, Sullivan began researching ‘digital nomad’ programmes, launched by nations from Anguilla to the Seychelles, enabling foreign nationals able to work remotely to do so in a more scenic location.

The lack of a language barrier, along with the time zone, put Antigua immediately in the running.

“Being from Vermont I had always lived among mountains. Mountains were important to me – so the Bahamas was out of the question.

But the advantages of a life in Antigua far outweigh the drawbacks.

Like so many before him, Badaoui’s first brush with the island was on vacation.

“I came for a holiday in 2016 and when I got back to Sydney I found myself wondering why I was paying so much in rent for a shoebox when I can work online, so I came back to Antigua,” he says.

“Everyone is really friendly here, Antigua has easy access to everywhere

“Barbados seemed too overbuilt, other places were underbuilt, but Antigua with 100,000 people and some variety in things to do seemed like the right balance,” he recalls.

“I had never been to the Caribbean before I came. I’ve lived in a lot of places where the people are really nice but here they are even nicer,” he smiles.

“And that matters a lot because this society works on personal connections.” n

PAAWS ANTIGUA: GIVING HOPE FOR A BETTER TOMORROW

For animal lovers visiting Antigua and Barbuda, the large number of roaming dogs and cats – some not in the best of health – can be tough to witness.

Things like regular grooming, trips to the vet, quality food and adequate medication that are par for the course in other parts of the world, are often not part of the average island dog’s existence in a country where many families struggle to feed themselves.

Happily, there are a handful of NGOs working tirelessly to unite those most in need with loving permanent homes. Friendly society PAAWS was born in 1996 out of a desire to curtail the number of strays seen on streets nationwide – and an inability to turn a blind eye to suffering.

Today, the donation-dependent entity runs a rescue and rehoming shelter in Parham – currently home to around 50 dogs and 25 cats – and has successfully rehomed almost 3,000 animals over the years.

How do animals end up in PAAWS’ care?

Just a brief jaunt around the island will reveal we have our work cut out. As much as we wish we could help them all, we just don’t have the funds or the facilities. We prioritise those who have been injured, abandoned or abused. Some are surrendered by people who can no longer keep them. The Covid pandemic saw an influx of dogs into our care by families who had to make the heart-breaking decision to let them go when their finances took a hit.

Why should I adopt a pet from PAAWS?

All pets that are old enough are spayed/ neutered and fully vaccinated before being rehomed. Taking action to prevent them from breeding is especially important to reduce the number of strays that end up on the streets. Adopting from us also means avoiding many common illnesses, like parvo which can be deadly for unjabbed puppies.

How do we get to the root of the issue?

PAAWS works closely with the Antigua Spay & Neuter Clinic which performs dozens of low-cost procedures a month. Not only does it offer people on limited means the chance to stop their pets breeding at a rate that’s heavily discounted, sometimes free, the clinic also carries out educational campaigns, providing medical advice to local residents and teaching children how to care for animals.

Our canine residents love to be taken for walks, which in turn enhances their social skills and leash training, and improves their chance of finding a forever home. Volunteers are also needed to help clean out the pens, and socialise shy new intakes.

Can I board my pet with you when I go on vacation?

Yes! We offer both short-term and longterm boarding services at very affordable rates. Your pet will get a shared or single pen which is regularly cleaned, plus meals, daily exercise and lots of love.

HOW THE HALO FOUNDATION SPREADS ITS ‘WINGS OF CHARITY’ TO HELP THE LESS FORTUNATE IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

With our easygoing lifestyle, amiable people and idyllic landscapes, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s perfect in paradise. In fact, around one in five people across the Caribbean lives below the poverty line of US$5.50 a day – and the pandemic has exacerbated that further with a sharp rise in unemployment.

One organisation working assiduously to turn things around in Antigua and Barbuda is the Halo Foundation. The non-profit body was founded in December 2014 by Governor General

Sir Rodney Williams and Lady Williams to bring greater attention to the social welfare needs of less fortunate citizens.

Its mission is to “turn suffering into smiles, pain into perseverance and hunger into health”

Today, it supports 37 local charities, acting as an umbrella entity to those dedicated to helping young people, the environment, the arts, and civic and community initiatives, among others.

Last June, more than 400 people turned out for the fifth edition of the Wings of Charity event held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. Under the banner ‘a global call for caring’, wellwishers from Antigua, Europe and the USA travelled especially to London to lend their support.

Lady Williams, the Halo Foundation’s president, said it had been an honour to welcome representatives from several charities under the organisation’s patronage.

The event featured a vibrant showcase of art and literature from Antigua and Barbuda. A painting entitled ‘Woman of the Soil’, created by Antigua State College art lecturer Mark Brown – the winning entry in an art competition organised by the foundation – was put up for auction.

Entertainment was provided by 70s American R&B group the O’Jays, behind 1973 hit ‘Love Train’. There were also appearances by Antiguan and Barbudan singers including Daina Barnes, and Jamie Lou Stenzel, aka Au/Ra, who is currently taking the international music scene by storm with a series of collaborations with big names including CamelPhat and Jax Jones.

Au/Ra performed an acoustic version of her 2018 smash hit ‘Panic Room’. The 20-year-old was also one of two internationally recognised musicians to be presented with Halo Hero Humanitarian Awards on the night. She, along with violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason, have been heavily involved in giving back through sharing their talents with fellow young people.

Music is something close to Sir Rodney and Lady Williams’ hearts; the Halo Foundation’s other principal fundraiser is its Music for a Cause concert staged annually in Antigua.

W hile in London, Sir Rodney and Lady Williams also joined other heads of state from the Caribbean and Commonwealth for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, which would become all the more poignant three months later with her passing.

STEP 2: VIEWING PROPERTIES

The next stage is for us to determine your specific requirements: is your dream home beachfront or hillside? Does it have a pool or garden? How many bedrooms should it have? And what is your investment range? We will then suggest various properties for you to look at online and arrange a time to take you to see them.

STEP 3: FINDING THE ONE YOU LOVE

With an extensive portfolio from snug holiday hideaways to plush palatial estates, we’re confident it won’t be long before you’re head over heels in real estate love. You can then submit an offer and we will negotiate on your behalf, ensuring you the best possible deal for your money. Once the offer is accepted, a deposit will be needed to reserve the property; usually this is five per cent of the property price.

STEP 4: THE LEGAL PROCESS

Now come the all-important legalities

for which we can put you in touch with a reputable lawyer. Their fee is between one and two per cent of the purchase price, half of which will be required upfront. The seller’s lawyer will then draw up a draft contract. Once both parties are happy with the fine print, a 10 per cent deposit of the property price is due (minus the reservation deposit already paid). That will be held safely in an escrow account.

STEP 5: NON-CITIZEN’S LICENCE

Non-nationals buying a home need a non-citizen’s licence which our recommended lawyers can handle for you. It costs seven per cent of the purchase price and can take up to three months to acquire but it’s a pretty seamless process and 99 per cent of applicants are approved. Stamp Duty of two point five per cent is paid on closing.

STEP 6: COMPLETION

The remaining 90 per cent of the property price is owed upon completion of the deal. Finally, there’s the transfer of the title deeds making you the official owner. Now all that’s left for you to do is settle in and enjoy your new home. Or, for maximum return on your investment, enter it into the rental programme and allow our sister company Villa Management to take care of it for you.

One avenue for gaining an Antigua & Barbuda passport is a minimum US$400,000 purchase in a governmentapproved real estate project. Successful applicants are not required to sacrifice their current citizenship. PROPERTY MARKET: WHAT MIGHT 2023 BRING?

As the world reopened to travellers in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, we saw an explosion in property sales and vacation rentals across the Caribbean. As 2022 draws to a close however, we appear to be seeing a slightly more conservative approach to the market and sales.

W ith the immediate relief of seeing the worst of the pandemic behind us, the world was ready to rejoice together and begin enjoying life and vacations once again as travel became the next big thing on our to-do lists.

Such trends can be seen in the property market all across the Caribbean where estate agents and real estate brokers are seeing a steady stream of investors looking to purchase property in the sun.

One slight change we have seen over the past six months is that the initial eagerness which accompanied the release from lockdowns across the world has

The British pound reaching an alltime low since 1985 against the US dollar does mean that there are some who can take advantage of the situation. With US dollars being the primary currency of real estate purchases in Antigua, British owners of Antiguan property will be very keen to offload while the pound is weak.

But it seems that our troubles are not behind us yet; the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has forecast the weakest economic growth in the past two decades for 2023. Although this is a rather gloomy outlook, the IMF does also predict that the global economy is set to continue to grow, rather than contract.

So what does this mean for the property market in Antigua and Barbuda? As is well known by those in the trade, markets such as our twin island nation, particularly with respect to touristic properties, are often considered to be a law unto themselves and don’t necessarily follow typical economic trends.

It is very rare that we see a property price has been reduced in Antigua. Although we may see house prices drop in other parts of the world such as New York and London, over short-term periods we generally do not see the same thing occur in Antigua.

D ue to the majority of properties being non-primary residences, as well as being predominantly purchased without mortgages or loans, most owners do not

FROM THE TOWNSHIP OF POINT TO THE TUSSLES OF POLITICS: MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE HEADLINES

Attorney, ambassador and diplomat are just some of the hats he’s worn over the last five decades. Since 2014, Lionel Hurst – known to most simply as ‘Max’ – has been the Prime Minister’s chief of staff and the government’s official spokesman. Known for his flamboyant use of the English language, the affable septuagenarian from Point in Antigua’s north-west is both unashamedly partisan and an island institution.

How did you get involved in politics?

My father was the representative of what is now St John’s City West. I grew up in a household in which politics was an everyday experience.

Your father played a leading role in steering the country towards independence. What are your memories of that time?

We had been gearing up for independence since our status changed in 1967, when Antigua and Barbuda began to command its own domestic affairs but external affairs and defence remained under British control. In 1960, the United Nations had adopted a resolution which declared colonialism to be unlawful and demanded that all colonial powers disgorged themselves of their colonies.

W hen we entered full independence in 1981, I knew that Antigua and Barbuda would require diplomats to represent it abroad, especially at the UN. I had a love for the UN; my first college degree completed in 1979 was in international politics.

And you’re also a trained lawyer?

I did a Master’s in business administration in 1981 and moved onto law school in 1982 in New York City. After that I worked for a law firm on Wall Street; I was one of 110 lawyers at the company.

But I didn’t go to New York to become a lawyer, rather to acquire learning that would allow me to play a significant role in Antigua and Barbuda’s diplomacy. In 1985, when I had completed my studies, the Honourable Lester Bird who was then Minister of Foreign Affairs saw it fit to bring me into government. I worked in his ministry

with responsibility for a little bit of everything; I wrote papers mostly and designed a foreign policy for the country.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Study hard - and not be distracted by the goodies on offer. In New York, there were plenty! (laughs)

Proudest achievement?

When I was named ambassador to the UN in 1988. I was 37 at the time. I felt self-fulfilled at that moment. I spent seven or eight years in that role.

How do you spend your downtime?

I learned to swim on Fort James Beach so I still embrace it as my favourite beach. I used to be a voracious reader but I now find Facebook and YouTube are easier to watch for hours than to sit and read a book. My eyesight has begun to fail a little. I recently had a cataract removed but I still struggle to read.

I also have a 43-year-old Volkswagen which I know how to repair.

Ah yes, tell us about the car.

I bought it new in 1980 from the US for less than US$5,000 and I’ve kept it going for more than four decades. It’s a 1980 Volkswagen Jetta; that was the first Volkswagen that was not air-cooled. I call it the ‘Hurst First automobile’ and it’s still my only car; in fact, I drove it to work this morning.

I have had it repainted twice and each time it cost me about EC$8,000.

I stopped doing that because I made 10 children all together – I have been married three times – so I no longer spend my money on such things.

Do you have a favourite song?

It’s a calypso song by Short Shirt [legendary Antiguan singer] called ‘Raycan’. It’s about a character who wears dirty clothing and might even have been a drunkard but somehow manages to win the hearts of women. Short Shirt asks that he be treated as Raycan is treated, winning the hearts of women.

All-time favourite movie?

I grew up during the Elvis Presley era and ‘Jailhouse Rock’ remains one of my favourites.

Why should people visit Antigua?

When we were little there was a song; it may have been a calypso. We used to sing it around 1957 when Carnival first began and it would go – (sings) ‘the Antiguans treat people nicely, don’t mind their colour or class, you won’t find us unfriendly’. The Antiguan people over the years have always been welcoming of strangers. We don’t see the Earth as ours only; the Earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, so we share our piece of Earth with anyone who wants to have it. n
