ngineers, marketing consultants, biochemists all use the design process. It is time honoured. Design incorporates philosophical discussion and scientific enquiry. Design includes time for research and reflection and the reabsorption of new data and ideas. Design can also embody the spirit of an age and cultural values. At its best it can improve the world and it can make things robust, easy to use and a pleasure, be that a building, a city or a spoon. It can provide those timeless ideas of Firmness, Commodity and Delight. And, I would add, a standard of excellence that no other process can match.

Design can also not only respond to context but has the magical ability to create context, by making objects, buildings and places that are really good of their sort. It can invent narrative and character and interest. Which, we might all subjectively agree, are good things because they make you feel better. With a little money and when imagination and human energy are in relative abundance, design can do this extremely well. Which means it has the ability to make a contribution to the sense of a place, which in turn

can enrich our experience of being in a place and lead us to spend time there and respect it. These are fundamental requirements of good ‘social’ sustainability.’ I’ve always instinctively felt and publicly maintained that good design – be it an AppleMac laptop, a great spoon or a great building – makes you feel like a better human being. But can a building go further? Can it make you a better citizen? Can it make you healthier? Or happier? By Kevin McCloud

Having owned holiday homes in this region for a number of years, our clients knew this is where they wanted to retire and enjoy quality time with their extensive family & friends. Purchasing a prime substantial plot within one of the many golf resorts of this region, our clients embarked on their dream project, designing and specify was with a renowned local Architect. Our clients had renovated their Alderley Edge property several years earlier with SieMatic. Loving the quality and design of SieMatic so much that they decided to create a true home from home for their kitchen and open plan living space in Portugal. As a design brief the clients approached Chris with a substantial large room as a blank canvas, allowing for complete design freedom. We designed a room within a room using the SieMatic Side-slide door to conceal a secret hidden walk-in pantry store and cool room. The pantry proved to be an invaluable addition to the design; housing additional storage, secondary worksurface space and a back-up microwave. The outside

walls of the pantry were designed to contain state of the art Gaggenau Vario cool fridge, freezer and wine chillers. The Wine store alone consists of 3 Vario cool wine chillers facing outwards to the landscaped poolside; providing storage for not only the finest wines but practical for refreshments by day and a stunning visual feature lit by night. The large Spekva timber breakfast table incorporated within the central island forms a prominent feature to the room and projects towards the pool area; catering for our clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desire to cook together as a whole family, making it functional, sociable and fun. The extensive Gaggenau hob combination provides a mix of Induction hobs with downdraft extractors and a specialist work surface steamer which was a specific request from the client. The outside kitchen adjacent to the poolside area further extends the entertaining space. From both practical to sociable aspects, our clients love how the overall design concept works.
