To Seek Emptiness of Space As the Silence in Music

this is the Museum of Silence rather than calling it a museum a processer might be more appropriate where humans are the input data may one find its unique serenity by the output

‘Silence’ is a relative term to describe a state where is no sound, voice, nor noise. Yet the existence of this state in our material world is impossible. Therefore ‘Silence’ is in fact an absolute concept describing one certain state by itself. To observe ‘Silence’ requires us to find a way to observe a non-existent being, which may leads us to an unprecedented way of observing the world. The idea of this ‘Silence’ state is already widely seem in Eastern cultures, included well-known concept of Taoism philosophy, ‘Wu’, translated as emptiness and nothingness; Japanese concept of ‘Ma’, the interval between space and time and the awareness of force of field; ‘Nothingness’ of Kyoto School, the absolute and pure state of being nothing; Samsāra in Buddhism suggested another reality underlying material world. The state of ‘Silence’ is given a variety of names in different places from ancient times. It also comes in different forms, mutative and still, balanced and chaotic. How would the state of ‘Silence’ emerge and be expressed? Facing silence is like throwing a pebble into a lake with a still surface. Making a decision when there are no options, like Alma did in Bergman’s Persona. ‘To analyse the idea of silence is to analyse his various alternatives within this essentially unalterable situation.’ The uniqueness of individual has long been expressed by Existentialism, through the choice one is making. The state of ‘Silence’ to each individual is never the same. Thus it is impossible to give definition to the state of ‘Silence’. Although is impossible to present ‘Silence’ itself, it is still worth trying to simulate the process of one approaching the state of ‘Silence’. In Taoism, to achieve ‘Silence’ is to find the essence. To empty out the material world is Nothingness, to empty out oneself is Silence. Approaching ‘Silence’ is a process of reveal the hidden, while one endures its inner struggle.

The breif asked for a small museum that conveythe meaning of emptiness and silence to your own understanding. The musuem should contain a civic space: a courtyard or atrium, two galleries: one temporary exhibition space and one permanent exhibition space, an auditorium with 100 seatings principally devoted to music, a cafe or restaurant, and a book store or library.

Moments are created in significant places of the design to simulate different ways of approaching ‘Silence’. The whole architecture acts as a processer, or a ‘field’, trying to present and reveal the ‘Silence’ of oneself. The narrative created in individual spaces would allow one to experience different senses, and have their own perception. Translating literal definition to abstract senses.

The site sits on the Constitution Hill, 5 mins walk away from uni, with a total area around ten thousand square meters. The design ought to be linked to the context, with minimal tree removal.

Methodology is, firstly, to pick up words and descriptions, and express the atmosphere by sketching with charcoal. Secondly, trying to link the drawing with an actual space with function, while making physical models using plaster to express 3-diamensional aesthetics and explore how it could be applied spatially.

The site has a high percentage of greenery coverage. A peaceful quiet spot sitting in the upper CBD area, next to Universities. Houses around the site is more clustered in the west than in the east. Main considerable buildings are mostly on the west and the north. Southeast of the site is facing outside CBD area, next to Parnell. Cars have access to all four boundaries of the site. Travel speed of cars are faster on Symond st and Alten rd since they are the major traffic channels. Symond st connecting university with downtown, while Alten rd leads to State Highway 1. By comparison, the ramp on the north is a cul-de-sac which gives access to private propoerties, and the carpark on southeast with lower utilization are less busy and more quiescent. There are existing pedestrian pathways within the park, connecting to an external road that leads to uni on the west. The whole site is a slope stepping down from Symond st. An extreme slope shown in contour had cut the site into half, rapidly reducing the available area.

Keeping the original pedestrian path from Symond st, the atrium is facing the main street, appear as a grand staircase down the slope, decending, with a griant panel blocking the line of sight. By the boundary of the musuem, it acts as a ritual sculpture signifying the entrance. Behind the atrium is the temporary exhibition, with open, free flow of space, suitable for exhibition setups. Bypass the outside of library, through an external space with a tree perforating two floors, then down to B1, the entrance of permanent exhibition is hiding behind the root of the tree. Permanent exhibition located at the most quiet side of the site, blocking away from other spaces. Down the slope, it exits to a black monolith referenced to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Back at the main building, walking pass the windows of Confusion and Epiphany, arrived at the foyer of auditorium. Another level below, library is hiding opposite the staircase, behind the concrete wall. External wall of the library is visiable all the time, however, the library itself is detached from the main structure, with an only entrance at the very bottom of the building.

HYPER HYPER SPACE SPACE xx

An Urban Experienment Revolutionary To Daily Living Pattern

In order to resolve the issues, the experiment tends to break the large scale of the city into smaller, medium scales. In that case, creating more central public space for smaller communities. By making the public spaces more efficient and compact the city may achieve better in both environmental and psychological health for the inhabitant. The new model of the city is to have public facilities on the ground level connects the streets together, creating a more diverse, flexible space, increasing the circulation, also to create more possibilities. Where as the residential buildings, constructed in vertial, midrised, instead of horizontally spread out. Giving more sense of private, and decreasing the waste of rural land. In this new model of urban planning, in each smaller area, there will be a structure that has more proportion of public area than its residential area, and it will be the center of this community. Hyber Space x attempts to construct this center piece of the community in order to spur buildings around it. Hyber Space x is reviewed as an urban experienment, discussing and attempt to solve the issues of urban sprawl in modernity. Current state of Auckland city fabric is having concentrated high rise public buildings at CBD area surrounded by suburban low rise residentials, just as many other cities in western countries. The city is highly car dependent, which leads to a various of unsustainable results. The lack of development in trasportation and infrastructure have caused unpleasant living experiences, for example, traffic problems in peak hours in CBD area, and the inconvenience of everyday shopping in residential areas.

The architecture is ought to be a mix-used building. Programmes within considered the residential population in the area, which mostly are students from fine arts and applied arts department in university, are set to be cultural education-orientated, included both the old handcrafting media and the new technology of projection and holographic. In order to use the public space more efficiently and bring more diversity into the site, different functions are grouped together, performing in the same space. This idea of mixuse is delivering in larger and smaller scale of the architecture.

SUNSET SUNSET SURF SURF CLUB CLUB Group Project: Standing in Erosion

Sunset Beach Surf Club is committing a new facility for its members and the public at Port Waikato. The surf club is a long established organization in Waikato city. The original facility is too small due to the growth of the club and the increasing tourists. Foreshore erosion had caused a considerable lost of carparks and forced the patrol tower to be relocated. Therefore a new facility which contains updated functions within is in needed. Particular programmes that are designated are function rooms for classrooms or media room, bunk rooms for contestants when theres a surfing competition or club members, special storage for equipments such as kayaks and trailers, changing rooms, kitchen, club member lounge, kiosk for visitors, and patrol tower. The site suffers from a serious erosion and prevailing wind. The building is designed to block the prevailing wind and to survive from the erosion, to apply material wisely showing unique tectonic within limited budget. The project is carry out as a group project.

1984: Utopia & Dystopia

set designs from movie scriptment: space driving narrative narrative recount by space

In 2803, human have defeated natural death, body parts can be updated and renewed, one can almost achieve immortal. Time is unlimited for each individual. In their timeless life, humanity and emotions slowly faded. Known is more than unknown, people lost their desires and became unconcerned with everything. Boundary between human and AI is ambiguous. The world is in a utopian state where everyone is equal, hierarchy is erased. Minds all over the world are connected to the Ultimate Cloud 24/7, infinite data stream is accessible to everyone. Technology has overcome all geographical difficulties and life is the same everywhere on earth.

Four scenes were selected from the whole scriptment. The design for each scene is based on the atmosphere required, aim of the scene in the whole story, and the reasonable deduction of future. The outcome then translated and performed in architectural languages such as scales, materials, and styles...

[ 01 ] The Clock Maker [ 02 ] End of Dream [ 03 ] The Ultimate Cloud [ 04 ] Museum Cemetry

[ 01 ] The Clockmaker

While Orwell is walking towards home, he noticed an error detailing of decoration on the building beside him. Orwell thought he had fixed it yesterday, but that doesn’t matter, he can check the code again. Orwell puts down the beer he had in his hand right next to the decoration, and keep roams forward. The old cat was sitting on the shoe cabinet jumped down and keep rubbing its head against Orwell’s trousers. His wife has already made his meal. Orwell puts down the bread he bought from bakery, ‘It’s fresh out of the oven.’ He called out to his wife, ‘Enjoy it while you still can.’ He just came back from a friend’s funeral. In the simulation, Orwell is a clockmaker living in a small house with his wife and their cat. Aim of this scene is to make his life in simulation convincing. The atmosphere would be warm and cozy, every little thing ought to be expressing the sense of daily life. The style of architecture it’s referring to is Tudor architecture. Exposing timber frame, stone chimney and Tudor arch are the main characteristics. Combination of different material gave more vitality to the space. The hearth act as kitchen is the gathering place of the house and a key element. Scale of the house is reasonably small, to literally shorten the distance between people. Objects, decorations and furniture in the house represented the life state of Orwell in the simulation, reflected his personality and taste. A trick in the scene was a round window beside the hearth, which should never show up in a Tudor architecture, this act as a hint to suggest the life Orwell had is not real.

[ 02 ] End of Dream

‘The simulation has ended’, warning sounded. Orwell sits up on a lying chair in his compartment, takes off the helmet and let out a deep sigh. It’s time to work. He puts away the helmet, installs his left foot that he just got last week. It’s a special order that had superior hiking function. He wouldn’t say he is fond of hiking, people don’t have feelings like that these days, you know, to be obsessed with something. This scene is a strong contrast to the first one, the dynamic and sense of daily life collapse immediately, cold and emptiness takes over. Comparing to the previous house, space of reality is clean and pale. Matter of most structure is the same, every architecture every furniture, interior and exterior. The private compartments in future are all the same, sphere with a diameter of 7.2 meters, it act as both residence and transportation. People rarely step out of the compartment. The sphere appearance is the most efficient shape for transporting, no fancy technology is needed. Inside the Sphere, visual reality to simulating surroundings is much easier to project on walls than inside a cubic space, due to the edgeless form. The shape is also a hint for equality. The scale of public architectures in future is designated in the scale of the residential compartment other than scale of human. Therefore the distance between people is literally pulled apart.

In 2803, the ‘Ultimate Cloud’ is using iconic architectures as server, trans land, Sky Tower is the server of the Cloud, it is also a carrier of power, an ty. Like the Stalinist architecture, the Cloud Sky Tower should be symme symbol of absolute power. It should be an enormous object or monolit indication, it was never meant to be serving the people. ULTIMATE OCC

[ 03 ] The Ultimate Cloud Orwell cleared his head, it’s time for work. It only took minutes to get to Skytower from Bucklands Beach. The local iconic building in every city or town is a large server, transmitting and receiving every data. The Ultimate Cloud is connecting everyone’s mind. Orwell’s work is to maintain it.

Sky Tower now serves as the server of the Ultimate Cloud in New Zealand. The Ultimate Cloud to some extend act as a surveillance of the society. Everything of everybody is recorded in the data stream, transparently accessible to everyone. Like the Panopticism of Michel Foucault, only more advanced, the Ultimate Cloud is a numerous replica of panopticon. The style of the Cloud is referring to Stalinist architecture, monumental in an inhuman scale. Organic shapes are abandoned, more controlled and efficient straight lines are applied on the appearance, expressed the lack of diversity. Main structure of the Cloud would be pale white, made from same matter with the residential Sphere. The periphery of the architecture is surrounded by signal enhancing devices, marking the border of former Ultimate Cloud, before the singularity, suggesting the timelessness of the structure. Part of Sky Tower preserves in the core of the Cloud due to heritage protection consideration.

“They used to be museums these buildings here.” “Have no idea what they were exhibiting back then.” “But that doesn’t bothers me.” “I use them to keep track on time.” “Time is precious when it’s limited. It’s what makes you you.” “Things you been through, memories you hold, people you know.” “They differ you from others, so you are unique.” “Not much human are unique now are they?”

[ 04 ] Museum Cemetry

Still he is, special in a way that attracts Orwell, feeling like he has something Orwell always seeking. ‘I couldn’t understand his/her way of living, it is just too strange in these days. Though I felt our minds are closer than anyone else who connected to The Cloud somehow…’ They landed on a hill, Orwell saw some structures hiding in the bush below. “There will be a bit of walking to do, with your legs if they’re still yours.” Says the heathen, trying to make a joke maybe. They walking down the hill following a narrow path, in front of them is serval abandoned buildings, some were left with only facades. The Heathen brought Orwell to a mysterious ruin, showing Orwell his collections of clocks, expressing his opinion on time and individuality. Walk path the Heathen leading Orwell pass through is between two façades of abandoned museums, weeds and wild plants invaded, alienated place in an artificial utopian. The scene response to the uncertainty of Orwell. The museum on the left was a classical museum used to hold exhibits from ancient times. The architectural language used are solid walls and columns, concrete and masonry were used. Museum on the right was a more recent transportation museum, held cars, trains, planes etc. Truss is mainly used as structure, differentiate from classical museum. The in-between space was then used as a basecamp for resisters, truss on top as signal blockers were assembled. Different elements and languages interlace in one scene performing dynamic of space and trace of changes through the elapsing of time, contrasting the timeless Cloud.

Arc : Sec At the University of Auckland, we are encouraged to explore unique ways of thinking about our life and the space we are encompassed by. Currently we are faced with a task to come up with new ways to exploit the technology we are provided with. Technology is constantly progressing, trying to blend the lines between the digital and physical realities. Arc/sec is an ongoing research project that integrates the exploration of concepts for a new condition of buildings and cities. Digital Information will be given physical form and physical spatial appearance. The aim is to make data ‘touchable’ in space. Using 3D projection technology and spatial tracking systems we wish to develop and utilize a large-scale interactive installation that explores and communicates new dimensions in architectural space. With this we want to expand architectural understanding of the design of responsive environments and its user interaction. We aim to give architecture depth in full scale and inhabitable environments. We will seamlessly zoom between scales: from micro details to mega urban structures. http://anaglyph-instillation.com
