Perspective View of Regla Terminal
Inspired by Coco-Taxi’s originality, affordability, flexibility, and its unique shape, we designed a cable-car system aiming to improve the public transportation condition in Havana, and we’d like to call it Coco-Cable Project. Due to the lagging economy over decades, Havana now desperately needs a comprehensive public transportation system, which could not only provide the existing metropolitan region an efficient service but also improve the developments around the Havana Bay in the future. Ironically the lack of development also benefited Havana by preventing her from the devastating madness of highway construction that happened to many developing countries in the last half century. Thus there
is an opportunity for Havana to have a less car-dependent and more environment friendly transportation system. Cable-car system, with its advantages in adaptability and sustainability, is more promising to fit the requirements of the particular geographical and eco-social conditions of Havana. The Coco-Cable travels above the water jointing the important nodes along the coasts of Havana Bay so that the distance between Havana central city and Regla would be shortened from almost 5 miles to less than 1 mile. The latest Gondola Lift Technogy accelerates cable-car speed to 22 mph meaning that it could transmit passengers from Regla to Casablanca in only 6 minutes. Combined with the other transportations.

Coco-Cable Project also helps to create a three-dimensional transportation. By lifting the traffic up to 180 feet (60 meters) above the ground, Coco-Cable allows even the largest cruise ship traveling underneath, therefore the entire water surface of Havana Bay has been liberated to flourish water based transportation and recreational activities. Unlike bridge or tunnel, the construction of Coco-Cable minimizes the invasion of the existing urban fabric with its superior in light infrastructure, and no waiting area required by cable-car terminal since no waiting time needed. In terms of economy, the construction of cable-car system only costs 1/4 of the subway with the same length. Even more ideal Coco-Cable is driven by electric motors so there is no fossil fuel consumption or carbon dioxide emission at all.

Moreover, traveling in the air brought by Coco-Cable will change Havana in some other ways. The Caracas Metro Cable system proved the simple fact that people can now see everything from the air has made a big difference in terms of security. “Urban safety comes not from police but from the eyes of the community.� This was something Jane Jacobs used to say about community building. Also the experience of flying over Havana Bay will strongly attract the tourists therefore improve the tourism of Cuba. The psychological map of Havana will be significantly altered by Coco-Cable Project. Coco-Cable also could serves as a legible symbol of the future developments of Havana.

Transformation Process based on Daily Solar Path
Because of its particularity in methodology, most curves and surfaces in the design are originated from geometrical pattern formed by solar path and its radiation angle in Vienne throughout the year. With the help of softwares such as Geco, EcoTech and GrassHopper, the designer developed a program to analyze the relation between the architectural mass and the solar path, which after iterations formed the overall shape: this is the general strategy. These above-mentioned geometrical patterns created a canyon-like shape and creases on its surface by “cutting” directly on the building. This kind of cutting brought about a rich inner space as well as radial layout of the space – both horizontally and vertically. Smooth louvers wrapped the whole building: these louvers correspond with solar paths in Vienne every day so that one can tell that at a certain time of a day, which room the sun will be shining on and through which louver. This design brings time, an abstract notion, into the designing process and makes it a co-determinant. It is an energy-conserving design: solar path in the winter months divides this building into two parts: a two-storied fitness center and apartments above it. During the severe cold, the sun shines through the glass into public spaces down in the building: not only does it illuminate the inside of the building, but also gives heat to the public space – this heat will then go upwards through light wells and increase the interior temperature. Its façade employs a hingeless and continuously adjustable flapping mechanism on the basis of biomimetic principles. Every louver is controlled by an Arduino box; residents of this building can by adjusting the louver decide the amount of sunlight and brightness in the room as well as ambient privacy. Due to this continuously louver-shape, the overall appearance is of Moire pattern which at the same time has an Op-art visual effect and a subtle yet vivid change of view without sacrificing its integrity. In term of urban space, the lower space of this building is friendly to communal space, creating an open entrance in the western alley connecting Mariahilfer Street and Naschmarkt in the south. As the angle of sunshine gradually turns from vertical to horizontal as it goes from winter to summer, vertical walls turn to sloping ones, stairs, and then to the roof of the fitness center. This kind of gradual change from vertical to horizontal also happens to facades of the apartments to the south of Mariahilfer Street.

We call our proposal for Shanghai Natural History Museum “Pangaea”. Pangaea was a hypothetical super continent of the remote geologic past 250 milions years ago. Our concept is symbolizing this continental drift which created the richness and diversity of flora and fauna in the history of nature. Our approach to the architecture is “from inside out”. After understanding the best way to attach the buidling to the surrounding area we started to consider how to tell the story line best possible way. We decided that the most illustrative and exciting way is to start the story from the bottom of the building. With this system the second underground floor gets automatically great importance. Instead of being just a basement we have created space filled with interesting light and view
connections to the upper world. From the seconde underground floor the exhibition story line circulates up until one is in the second floor and further on the roof where the modern world with the Shanghai skyline can be seen. An important idea is to introduce light cuts into the exhibition loop which indicate a change of topic. Levels are always changed with expressive staircases where one sees the exhibition from interesting angles while climbing up. Connectiong the levels visually helps the orientation and understanding of the circulation route. The space for temporary exhibitions is located to the first underground floor so that it is possible to visit it without visiting to the regular exhibition loop.

Landscape is a fundamental element in the design. With the roof we integrate the compact volume as an artificial landscape. The strategy is learning grom the Nature, the roof garden shape is inspired by shapes form nature. The landscape topography is constructed by using layers. These 200mm layers can be seen as artificial geological sediments, or tranditional terraced rice fields. The cuts in the volume lets in the natural light into the building. The roof of the building is made of completely glass including th frame. Because of the need to avoid direct lighting, the walls of the cuts are covered with frosted glass, between the glass surface there is a steel structure which pattern can seen through the glass. The compound glass wall can give soft indirect light into the interior during daytime and glowing mysteriously at night. The idea of glass is to give an impression of being under water or ice.

Garden of Genesis is the land we borrowed from the nature for living, thinking, and prayer. Here we arrange these activities strickly in accordance with the daily movement of the sun, making the whole building works like a clock and calendar, using the unique forms of building to optimize the gains of light and heat that the sun offers. The seamless integration of natural landscape and artificial structure intends to remind us that we are after all part of nature. intend to create a design for “moving”, which responds not only to the spatial but also to the temporary, not only physically but also psychologically. Walking pass the various green areas, plazas, sunken gardens, exterior stairs, sidewalks, and transparent entrance halls interconnected by views to one another, travel is not through physical spaces but the overwhelming history “the landscape of time”.

Chang’an Temple Commercial Complex is a compound planning and architectural concept design for mainly commercial use. What I mainly focus on the design are in what way we could realize the full commercial value of this place, how we could deal with the relations to the surrounding areas and how we could guide people with various needs by applying the spaces. Designing such a large commercial space is like performing symphonies. Various spaces, factors, people are like notes of the movements, interacting each other. a good commercial area should be arranged in order for people could find their destination quickly. a good commercial area
should be full of interesting contents which attract various people coming inside. The total area has been divided into 3 parts from south to north. The south part is like a prelude, a sunken plaza connected with a subway exit, leads to three public squares in ascending order. People could gather here for some activities and then go through the passages to the center of the plaza from each square. The center part is the crescendo of the symphony. Different traffic passages crisscross in the space. The main attractive pedestrian street is designed to parallel with Dongshuncheng Street.

We call our proposal the Musical Box. The musical box refers to an item, a case, which when opened starts playing music. We conceive this theatre to have a very similar function. During the day the building seems to be calm with all the elements inside the building frame resting peacefully. At night the interior illuminates and the theatres seem to come alive to the outside world. This musical box is configured to be transparent without parent outside boundary. All elements of the program and function are placed within this imaginery boundary of a box or a cube. The cantilevered roof acts as an opened lid to reveal all the moving parts inside.
The rectangular form of the building is also related to the surrounding building’s architectural forms. Functional concept is to open the building’s main direction towards the lake and to create a visual ending for the plaza on the west side.The building’s program consists of two theaters, two cinemas, a hotel, two large rehearsal rooms and all the ancillary functions for the actors, musicians, staff and the public. Offices and other functions are located around the halls.The front of the house is visually integrated in the lake space, whereas the entry side of the building is designed to act as an ending for the plaza. Nevertheless the visual connection remains on the ground floor.

The buildings function is based on an idea of two lobbies and two public areas. This is achieved via raising the theatre halls ten meters above street level. These two lobbies are connected via grand staircase from the entry level to second floor grand foyer. The staircase bisects between the two theatres making orientation easy to grasp and enabling both of them to have a separated foyer areas. Stairs and elevators in the upper foyer lead to the different levels of the theatre hall. The theatres can run simultaneously without disturbing each other. The first floor houses the two cinemas and the restaurant facilities being a more public area. The restaurant areas and the two foyers all have great views of the lake and the surrounding areas of the art centre. Another important aspect we considered was to create a public platform under the big cantilevered roof. This deck will serve as a viewing deck of the surroundings and as an outside exhibition and recreational area. From the terrace on the top floor there is a 180 degree view of the art centre. Two large rehearsal halls are located on top of the side stage of the main theatre hall. This enables both of them to have access to the cargo elevators. The hotel is located on the highest level with individual roof gardens and views over the lake and the surroundings.

INSPIRATION: RATIO AND GRID CASE STUDY OF UNBUILT DANTE MUSEUM
The study of Giuseppe Terragni’s Dante Museum is the most interesting and fruitful architecture lectures. We were excited about the great architect Giuseppe Terragni but with premature death, Italy Rationalism, the monument to the greatest work of Italian poet Dante Alighieri “Divine Comedy” and the related history, politics, ideology and religious background. Trough the research to the Dante Museum, we learn about two legendary ages and two legendary persons: Renaissance and the World War II, architect Giuseppe Terragni and poet Dante Alighieri. What we have gained from the lecture is not only the skills on architectural design but also reconsideration to the concept of architecture, and recognition to the rapport between architecture and human society.

As a matter of fact, what could offer seats to people contains much more concepts than chairs. Primitive man never sat on a chair but on the ground or on the rock or in the tree. Furthermore, people from lots of nations are not seated on chairs in many circumstances. For instance, Japanese people and some Arab peoples seat themselves on Tatami or cushions. Chairs are invented and connected with the behavior of sitting to make people feel more comfortable and become healthier. Designers and architects created various chairs. The values of those chairs are realized in the application of different materials, and in the consideration of human engineering and esthetics.

Test Tube Chair consists 64 pieces of wooden cylinder in white, 64 pieces of springs, 64 pieces of acrylic tubes and an acrylic bottom. It showed no sense to people at the first sight. No one could figure out it was a chair or stool. When you sat on it, cylinders were pressed to push the springs in those acrylic tubes. A seat was shaped at the place of your buttocks while other higher cylinders became arms. Then, no sense Test Tubes turned to an armchair. Consequently, the chair was formed by Test Tubes, people’s behavior, and the gravity together which realize my concept of Design for sitting.
