ID 150: MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS
GIVEN A FLOORPLAN AND SPACE PLAN, STUDENTS WERE INSTRUCTED TO DESIGN A COSMOPOLITAN CLUB. THE SPACE INCLUDED A RESTAURANT, HEALTH AND DIETICIAN OFFICES AND A MANAGER’S APARTMENT. THE MAIN TASK WAS TO SUCCESSFULY SELECT APPROPRIATE MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS FOR ANY OF THE SPACES. ALL MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS SELECTED WERE TO DERIVE FROM A COHERENT DESIGN AND ALL SPACES NEEDED TO BE LINKED WITH AN UNDERLINING “THEME.” THE MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES FROM THIS ASSIGNMENT WERE: 1) REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE WHEN CONTACTING REPS FOR SAMPLES, 2) PRODUCING ACCURATE AND USEFUL SPECIFICATION SHEETS FOR EACH ITEM, 3) INCREASED AWARENESS OF MATERIALS APPROPRIATE FOR RESIDENTIAL OR COMMERCIAL SPACES.
THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS COSMOPOLITAN CLUB CAME FROM THE JUXTAPOSITION OF THE OLD AND NEW. AS NEW ARCHITECTURE GIVES RISE TO GLASS AND STEEL BUILDINGS, OLD STRUCTURES REMAIN A STANDARD OF BEAUTY AND ENDURANCE. LIMESTONE BUILDINGS HAVE WITHSTOOD THE TEST OF TIME REMINDING US OF THE GREAT POWER OF TRUE CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ARTISTRY. WHILE TECHNOLOGY IS RAPIDLY CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE OF DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE, WE MUST NOT FORGET THAT TECHNOLOGY IS ONLY A TOOL AND CAN NEVER REPLACE HUMAN SKILL. WHETHER YOU CROSS A STEEL BRIDGE TO GET TO A CATHEDRAL IN GERMANY OR WALK AROUND GLASS PYRAMIDS AT THE LOUVRE IN FRANCE, THE COMPOSITION BETWEEN OLD AND NEW STRUCTURES COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE BEAUTIFUL.
