‘THIS IS THE FIRST STEP’ By GREGOR MACTAGGART and KATE WITHERS

VICTORIAN Premier Daniel Andrews (pictured) has introduced “step one of restrictions to halt the spread of coronavirus. Speaking this morning, Mr Andrews announced a raft of businesses impacted by bans effective from noon and in place until midnight on April 13. “These bans, this shutdown, includes pubs, clubs, nightclubs, crown, licensed venues, gyms, indoor sporting venues, places of worship, cinemas, entertainment venues, wedding and funerals, Mr Andrews said. “This list represents a very big step, a massive step that is essential. “This is painful, but it is absolutely appropriate. “This is step one, there is almost certainly a step two and maybe beyond that. “We needed to take a big step and that’s exactly what we have done. “I apologise for that, this is the only way we can keep people safe by flattening the curve, keeping people safe from coronavirus.

BACK THE VALLEY

NOW more than any time in the Latrobe Valley’s proud history we need to stick together. The impact of the coronavirus is being felt worldwide and our great part of Australia is not immune. Everyone is affected. It is important we support one another, especially the small businesses who form the backbone of the Valley’s economy. By supporting them, where we can, we will have them around when this all passes and it will. It is also vital that we all respect the current guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19, especially after the region’s first case was confirmed on Thursday, so we can protect those who are the most vulnerable. Yes times are tough, but we as a community are tougher. The time is now to back the Valley!

FACTS ABOUT

CORONAVIRUS E T A UPD

If you suspect you may have coronavirus disease (COVID-19) call the dedicated HOTLINE - open 24 hours, 7 days on 1800 675 398.

What is Coronavirus

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause respiratory infections. These can range from the common cold to more serious diseases.

You are most at risk if you:

Travelled or transited through Iran, mainland China, Italy or South Korea • Anyone who has been in Iran, mainland China, Italy or South Korea in the past 14 days or is a close or casual contact of a confirmed case of COVID-19 is at the highest risk of infection. • If you have been in Iran, mainland China (excluding Hong Kong SAR, Macau and Taiwan) Italy or South Korea in the past 14 days you are required to: - stay at home (self-quarantine) - avoid public settings - this means you should not attend work, school, childcare or university or go to other public places such as restaurants, cinemas or shopping centres and should not use public transport or taxis - do this for 14 days after leaving mainland China, South Korea, Italy or Iran (other than when seeking medical care) - only people who usually live in the household should be in the home. Do not allow visitors into the home. - you should stay in a different room to other people as much as possible.

Had close contact with a confirmed case

• If you have been in close contact with someone who has coronavirus disease (COVID-19) stay at home (self-quarantine).

International travel

Travellers returning from any country outside Australia are now considered at risk of COVID-19. If you’re travelling or returning to Australia and arrive from 12am on 16 March, you will be required to selfisolate (Coronavirus COVID-19 isolation guidance) for 14 days. This applies to all travellers, including Australian citizens. For details see the Australian Border Force website. All Australians are advised to NOT travel overseas indefinately. If you have returned from international travel in the last 14 days and begin to feel unwell and develop a fever or shortness of breath, a cough or respiratory illness, you should call the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398 for advice.

If you feel unwell

• If you are in any of these risk categories and begin to feel unwell and develop a fever or shortness of breath, a cough or respiratory illness either during your period of isolation (self-quarantine), or in the 14 days since arriving home from international travel, you should seek immediate medical attention. • Call ahead to your GP or emergency department and mention your overseas travel before you arrive at the doctor’s office so they can prepare appropriate infection control measures. • If you have serious symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, call 000 and ask for an ambulance and tell the operator your recent travel history.

Elderly or have pre-existing medical conditions

Many people will suffer only mild symptoms, however, early indications are that the elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart and lung disease are more at risk of experiencing severe symptoms. Read the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) factsheet for people aged over 65 years for more information.

Residential Aged Care Facilities

Anyone wishing to visit a resident of an Aged Care Facility should contact the facility first to receive advise on their current arrangements.

What to do if asked to self-isolate

A document has been developed to support Australians who have been asked to self-isolate due to COVID-19. If you are concerned please call the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398.

How the infection is spread

COVID-19 spreads through close contact with an infected person; mostly face-to-face or within a household. It cannot jump across a room or be carried for long distances in the air so we should all go about our lives as normal. Close contact means greater than 15 minutes face-to-face or the sharing of a closed space for more than two hours with a confirmed case. A close contact could include any person meeting any of the following criteria: • living in the same household or household-like setting (for example, a boarding school or hostel) • direct contact with the body fluids or laboratory specimens of a confirmed case • a person who spent two hours or longer in the same room • face-to-face contact for more than 15 minutes with the case in any other setting not listed above.

Symptoms of coronavirus

Many people who contract COVID–19 will suffer only mild symptoms. However early indications are that the elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions are more at risk of experiencing severe symptoms. The most common symptoms reported include: • Fever • Breathing difficulties such as breathlessness • Cough • Sore throat • Fatigue or tiredness. For further information on the coronavirus go to: www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus or www.health.gov.au

Ten ways to reduce your risk of Coronavirus 1

Wash hands often with soap and running water, for at least 20 seconds. Dry with paper towel or hand dryer. 2. Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth. 3. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow. 4. Isolate yourself at home if you feel sick. If you take medication ensure you have adequate supplies. 5. Phone your GP first if you need medical attention. They will tell you what to do. 6. Continue healthy habits: exercise, drink water, get plenty of sleep, and now is the time to quit smoking. Call the Quitline 137 848. 7. Don’t wear a face mask if you are well. 8. Buy an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with over 60 per cent alcohol. 9. Keep a distance of 4 metres square between you and other people whenever possible. 10. No more handshakes

Premier announces new restrictions in state’s bid to combat coronavirus Continued from page 1

Mr Andrews said the school holidays have been brought forward to tomorrow with the support of the state’s chief health officer Brett Sutton. “These are not ordinary school holidays,” he said. “Every Australian has been advised not to undertake non-essential travel and I’m advising every family that school holidays where kids might be staying at friends places, going to shopping malls … that is not appropriate. “If we don’t start taking these things seriously then we will be talking about quite amazing tragedy. I’m comfortable with the decision I’ve made.”

Mr Andrews said common sense applied for companies that are not on the list of “closed” businesses, including enforcing social distancing and working from home when possible. He added decisions regarding whether trades such as hairdressers, barbers and dentists should continue trading would be made down the track. Mr Andrews confirmed the borders would remain open, pointing to the example of Albury-Wodonga a key reason why Victoria would not follow in the footsteps of South Australia,Western Australia and Northern Territory. He also announced a 500-strong Victoria Police taskforce. “(The) taskforce is all about enforcing

the coronavirus rules that have been put in place,” he said. “It is disappointing that it has come to this. It’s unacceptable, it will cost lives. No matter what you call it, no matter what motivates you, do the right thing for everybody.” Mr Andrews said Victoria had an additional 59 confirmed cases, lifting the total to 355 and stressed the importance of personal responsibility. “If we have a situation where this virus fundamentally gets away from us, we will have thousands of people that will only be able to breathe with a machine, and we will not have enough beds, nurses and doctors to provide that care,” he said.

“There are many Victorians who are acting selfishly they are not taking this seriously, they are doing the wrong thing and if that continues then people will die. “It is easy to do the right thing for you family and people you’ve never met. “Whether you call it mateship … civic duty… just do it. “You won’t be able to go to the pub and you won’t be able to get on the beers with your mates at home. It will spread the virus.” Mr Andrews said business owners could visit www.coronavirus.vic.gov. au to get information on whether their business needs to change under the newly-introduced restrictions. Victoria’s restrictions followed the

COVID-19 spread ‘inevitable’

By CHER JIMENEZ

THE Rural Doctors Association of Australia said the spread of coronavirus in Latrobe Valley is now “inevitable” after the region registered its first confirmed case last week. “It will spread in the community, that’s inevitable,” RDAA president Dr John Hall told The Express. Dr Hall urged residents to practice social distancing and avoid physical contact such as kissing and hugging to slow the spread of the virus. He said the question now is not whether people in the community would contract the virus, but how to slow the spread to avoid overburdening healthcare services. “The purpose of social distancing is not necessarily about protecting people from getting infected but to slow down the spread of the virus and reduce the burden on our healthcare services and the capacity of our hospitals and intensive care services,” he said. Dr Hall said the virus was highly contagious and could stay on hard surfaces for up to seven days, however washing hands with soap and water, using a hand sanitiser or a rubbing alcohol could kill it. “If you wash your hands with soap and water, use hand sanitiser or an alcohol-based solution, those deactivate the virus,” he said. Dr Hall also urged residents to avoid unnecessary use of public

transport and observe social distancing when using them. The Victorian health department confirmed the Latrobe Valley’s first COVID-19 case on Thursday, March 19. The Express understands the person remains in self-isolation after presenting at Latrobe Regional Hospital’s emergency department on March 13 and was not admitted. The person had returned from overseas and had not long arrived home from the airport. A spokesperson from the health department said it had notified close contacts and public exposure sites where the person had been. Close contacts were asked to observe self-isolation for 14 days. “As part of our contract tracing, all close contacts of the case are notified and monitored by the department and any public exposure sites are contacted and provided with advice about the transmission risks and any cleaning that may be required,” the spokesman said. He said the department would not provide further information in response to comments on The Express’ Facebook page where people had asked which town the person lived in. “We can’t provide any further details out of respect for the privacy of the patient,” the spokesperson said.

announcement by Prime Minister Scott Morrison last night. Earlier in the day, the federal government revealed a $66 billion ‘survival package’ aimed squarely at keeping the economy afloat. It follows the first $17.6 billion announced more than a week ago and takes the total economic assistance package to about $189 billion. Under the package, small businesses are set to receive cash payments of up to $100,000, while the jobseeker payment (previously called Newstart) will temporarily double. People will be allowed to access $10,000 per year from their superannuation in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 financial years.

MP: Access to products and services is vital

MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe has called for Premier Daniel Andrews to intervene and ensure local residents have access to essential products and health services during the COVID-19 outbreak. “In Question Time I have put to the Premier that Latrobe Valley residents are feeling the strain and impacts of COVID-19,” Mr Northe said from Spring Street. “It is well-known our region has a significant shortage of GPs before COVID-19, so it gives some concern as to how well prepared we are from a health response perspective. “I constantly hear from local residents that it can take weeks to be able to get an appointment with a doctor and this is not good enough. “We currently have over 40 vacancies for doctors in the Gippsland region including at Morwell, Churchill and Traralgon clinics, and many of these are long-term vacancies.” Mr Northe said his office had also been inundated with concerns from a vast range of people who are upset and angry at their inability to

obtain essential items from supermarket shelves. “The measures that are in place at the moment are simply not working for many, many individuals, families and businesses and governments and the supermarkets must step in to fix the mess that has been partly created by a cohort of persons through their selfish bulk purchase of essential goods and items,” he said. “Our business community has been hit terribly hard and whilst some measures have been announced by the federal government, more practical measures need to be implemented urgently. “Financial support and taxation relief is a must if we are going to help so many small and medium businesses survive this crisis, and that is why I have also raised these matters in parliament this week.” In response, Premier Daniel Andrews said “the system is going to change”. “Things are going to be very different, I think, in the next six months than they have been,” he said.

Manny’s busy due to demand increasing

By MONIQUE PRESTON

MEAT and groceries are in such high demand at one Morwell business that they are driving to Melbourne most days a week to pick up stock. Manny’s Deli and Liquor and Butcher Shop in Morwell owner George Labros said the business’ eight-tonne truck was making the regular trip to Melbourne to ensure the store could remain stocked as regular deliveries were now being held up because of the coronavirus crisis. Normally the business would only take the truck to Melbourne once a week, and rely on deliveries other days, but these normal deliveries are now being delayed by one or two days. “It’s not an issue of finding the stock. But the issue is transport,” Mr Labros said. “It’s all logistics, Australia’s got food - it’s just problems with transport.” Among the good being brought back from Melbourne are flour, pasta, pasta sauce and beans which have been flying off the shelf. “The grocery section and the butcher is getting smashed,” Mr Labros said. “We are trying to keep everything nice and full.” Flour has been one of the big sellers in the store at the moment, with a ton of flour being sold every day in 12.5kg bag. Mr Labros said sales at his business were huge at the moment and people scramble to find food. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said. “Every two days (worth of sales) is what you take in Christmas week.” Morwell’s Valley Poultry has also been flat out for the past week as people rush to stock up on chicken. Owner Chris Pap said business had been normal a week ago, but from March 16 it had been a case of “bang out of the gates” and it had become very busy. Valley Poultry has also had supply issues, only able to get less than one third of normal stock in each day. Mr Pap said as well as his regular customers, he had also seen lots of new faces as the supermarkets were running out of meat. “There are a lot of new customers,” he said. The times people shop have also changed, with more people going shopping earlier in the day. “It’s hard for the people who work and can’t get in until after work,” he said.

Not happy: Willow Grove farmers James and Julie Hill have had eggs stolen from their farm gate.

Poached eggs leave sour taste

By MICHELLE SLATER

A WILLOW Grove free-range egg producer has been forced to close his farm gate honesty box due to a spate of increased thefts which he has linked to panic buying, stripping supermarket shelves of eggs. Gippsland Free Range Eggs owners James and Julie Hill were “disappointed” when they went to re-stock their honesty box to find it all stock had been poached. “The whole fridge was cleared-out, they took the whole lot. I was pretty upset,” Mr Hill said. Mr Hill said they noticed thefts had increased to once a day in the past week, after usually noticing the odd carton taken in the past three years

since they established the honesty box. The pastured egg farmers supply customers from Warragul to Traralgon including supermarkets, cafes and farmers markets. Mr Hill said customer orders had jumped five-fold in the past fortnight since COVID-19 had sparked panic purchasing. “Some shops who normally order one box are now asking for three, four or five boxes. One customer even wanted 10 boxes,” he said. “But our chooks only lay one egg a day, they don’t know there is an increase in demand, we can only do, what we can do.” The couple run more than 2000 hens out at pasture pasture on their 73

hectare property where they produce “delicious free range pastured eggs” and also graze beef cattle. Mr Hill said he was unable to speculate if the trend would continue, but would consider re-opening the honesty box in time, and asked the public to consider the impact of these thefts on small farmers. “We are trying to make it fair for everyone and give them some eggs so no one runs out. When they are stolen it makes it harder to keep up, and we are already struggling to keep up with demand,” he said. “We work hard and it’s good to have an honesty box in a small country town, most people are still honest and leave the right money,” Mr Hill said.

Emptied: James Hill shows the fridge left bare by egg thefts.

GIPPSLAND patients will be able to access PET scans locally rather than travel for them after the installation of the first scanner in the region. The positron emission tomography (PET) scanner is located in Traralgon at I-MED Radiology’s Latrobe Regional Hospital clinic. PET scanners are important for diagnosis and ongoing monitoring and management of most cancer, heart disease and many other diseases.

I-MED Gippsland Regional Manager Wendy Stanway said the new service demonstrates I-MED Radiology’s commitments to provide the latest technology to regional communities. “Having a PET service located in Traralgon provides our community with the best diagnostic imaging technology right on their doorstep,” Ms Stanway said. “Patients requiring PET scans are often older and

undergoing a very stressful time in their lives; having to travel to Melbourne just adds to the anxiety and stress. “Now they will have easy access to this service in familiar, relaxed surroundings. Our new PET service will deliver exceptional image quality and advanced accuracy leading to improved patient outcomes.” The PET service is now available and requires a referral from a specialist.

almost impossible to get up that time in the morning. These people can’t go out on their own and it’s too early to get a support worker in your home to accompany you to the shop,” she told The Express. Gippsland Disability Advocacy Incorporated chief executive Adrian Terranova said the epidemic of panic buying was causing a huge stress to people with disabilities. “As a disability advocacy service we are well aware that for many people

with a disability attending the local supermarket takes considerable planning and preparation, seldom at the drop of a hat, and quite often involves carers,” he said. “To be left with no items on our supermarket shelves due to others stockpiling causes considerable angst, worry and serious fear to many people in our region with disabilities.” Voices of the Valley vice-president Ron Ipsen, who also lives with a disability, said online shopping

Hotline for small businesses can help is by giving them access to the information they need to make key decisions,” Premier Daniel Andrews said. “This dedicated hotline will help businesses of all sizes get the facts and connect them with support services so they can best weather this storm.” Businesses across the state can now access information on dealing with COVID-19 by contacting the Business Victoria hotline on 13 22 15. Operators calling the hotline will be able to get information about support services, including those available through Business Victoria, which offers mentoring to help operators develop business continuity and recovery plans. The hotline will provide the latest information on the

response to COVID-19 and how this affects businesses, including how to access financial support available through the national stimulus package. In addition to calling the Business Victoria hotline, business operators can also find information at business.vic.gov. au. “Small businesses make an enormous contribution to the economy and to the communities they serve,” Small Business Minister Adam Somyurek said. “We are listening to small businesses and I will be meeting with my small business advisory council and multicultural business council to gain further insights into the challenges at hand.”

PHARMACISTS will be enforcing federal government direction to limit dispensing and sales of prescriptions and certain over the counter medicines for the benefit of all Australians. These limits will apply to particular classes of medicines for which unavailability would result in significant health impacts for patients should treatment be interrupted or delayed. Pharmaceutical Society of Australia national president Associate Professor Chris Freeman said limiting the dispensing of prescription and over-the-counter products to one month’s supply was necessary to address the issue of people stockpiling medicines due to the COVID19 pandemic. “The (federal) government has made it clear to the public that it is critical to stop stockpiling medicine to protect the access of medicines to all Australians,” he said. “Demand for medicines has increased considerably in response to the COVID-19 pandemic which has the potential for numerous product lines to be out of stock and some pharmacists are being pressured and abused to provide unsafe quantities of medicine. “There is currently no anticipation of widespread national medicine shortages, however if current levels of demand through excessive purchasing continue, supply interruptions will occur which is why these measures have been put in place. “We need to put the brakes on selfish buying, some members of the community, who are stockpiling medicines, are abusing pharmacists and this clearly needs to stop. “A bold decision has been made to start putting a limit on the sale of certain medicines.” Pharmacists will be asked to limit dispensing of certain prescription products to one month’s supply at the prescribed dose, and sales of certain over-the-counter medicines to a maximum of one unit per purchase.

THE state government launched a hotline on Thursday for businesses dealing with the significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak. The pandemic is creating issues for businesses large and small who are facing a downturn in trade, bans on events and restrictions on indoor gatherings, as well as challenges in dealing with employee safety and entitlements. Given the rapidly changing nature of the crisis, businesses need quick access to accurate information on how to keep their workplace safe, and advice on how to plan to deal with the current situation and anticipate likely developments. “The COVID-19 outbreak is hurting Victorian businesses and an important way that we

would be the best course of action for vulnerable people in the community. Mr Ipsen said it may not be wise to put people who are vulnerable to coronavirus such as the elderly all in one place. “It’s not only the coronavirus that they can spread but it’s the flu season by looking at one solution you’re creating another problem,” he said. Mr Ipsen urged community members to be mindful of other people when they do their shopping.

BEFORE you grab an item of something you know you have enough stock of, you might want to think twice. People living with disability in Latrobe Valley have been struggling to find food and other essential items since shoppers started panic buying as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Morwell mum Fiona Doller at times has gone to three different shops to buy food and milk because stores have set a limit on some items. Ms Doller lives with a degenerative neurological condition and walks with a cane. Two of her three children have complex medical issues including one that requires a continued supply of fresh milk for his nutrition. “I have a son who’s 18 (years old) but is severely underweight,” she said. Ms Doller said her son is taking a type of food supplement that is mixed with fresh milk and has it twice a day to help with his nutritional requirements. “I normally buy six litres of milk that lasts us for four days and I would have a spare of two litres of UHT milk because they last longer,” she said. However the limits set on milk products mean she can only buy one of each item. This means that Ms Doller has two options - make another trip to the same shop or move to the next store. “I had been to three different shops just to get what we needed because I’m pushing myself. And I still haven’t got toilet paper,” she said. “It’s taking a toll on us.” Ms Doller said supermarkets’ decision to open shop early in the morning was a good idea, however it may not be the perfect solution for many people with disabilities. “For most people with disability it’s

Mask shortage is being assessed by key health officials

Chaise’s rare disease

By CHER JIMENEZ

Awareness: Chaise Hicks-Lowjen, 6, and his mum Lisa Hicks are highlighting Cyclic Vomit Syndrome. By MICHELLE SLATER

MOE six-year-old Chaise Hicks-Lowjen would sporadically vomit for days on end for no apparent reason to the point he was almost comatose, leaving doctors scratching their heads searching for answers. The Grade 1 student was recently diagnosed with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, a condition so rare it took doctors two years to diagnose after multiple tests and stints in hospital. Mum Lisa Hicks wanted to highlight the condition for CVS International Awareness Day, which was on March 5, to let other people know what to do if they suffered similar symptoms. Ms Hicks said she was going “crazy” trying to find out what was bringing on

the unpredictable vomiting sessions that could sometimes last four days. “It broke my heart. He wouldn’t eat. He would vomit out of the blue for no reason, he was so nauseated he couldn’t move,” Ms Hicks said. CMS often starts in childhood and is marked by spells of vomiting several times an hour over a period of hours or days, no one knows what causes it or how to cure it. Symptoms can be coupled with abdominal migraines, diarrhoea and dehydration. Ms Hicks said a paediatrician in Warragul detected CMS after everything else was ruled out, but said other doctors had no idea the condition existed. The mum of six children searched for online support networks and websites, but said there was very little information

photograph hayley mills

about it in Australia. Ms Hicks said Chaise was now on daily medication which has stopped the vomiting, but he still suffered from crushing abdominal pains, anxiety and blood in the stool. “He finds that eating an apple in a hot shower or heat packs relieves his abdominal pains,” she said. “It made things very hard.” Last year he missed a lot of school but he now has a health plan and has rests at school. “He knows when something is not right and the teachers are supportive,” she said. “When he is well he runs around and fights with his brother, he is active and loves football. “He is like any other child, he is happy and caring.”

GIPPSLAND Primary Health Network said there was currently a shortage of surgical masks across Australia and that it was working hard to get them to local GP practices. GPHN chief executive officer Amanda Proposch made the statement following a Traralgon GP clinic’s decision to set-up a mobile coronavirus testing centre to address a shortage in essential medical supplies such as face masks. “Currently, there is a national shortage (of surgical masks) and we are prioritising deliveries until new deliveries arrive,” Ms Proposch said. “Be assured, Gippsland PHN is keeping general practices informed around this issue.” On Wednesday, St Luke’s Medical Centre announced that they would run a mobile clinic to attend to patients who present with high-risk coronavirus infection as a way to minimise exposure on staff and other patients. Dr Justin Kang said the Traralgon-based clinic was down to a box of 50 surgical masks with no assurance as to when they would receive their next supply. He said the clinic had seen a spike in the number of high-risk patients that came to the practice with family members also given masks for protection.

Busy: Gippsland PHN chief executive officer Amanda Proposch. “I think we really like to advise our patients in this particular time to limit the number of people coming in to the clinic for this reason,” Dr Kang said. “Firstly it keeps the consultation short and certainly it reduces that distraction that happens during traffic in the clinic and reduces risks to us as well.” Latrobe City Council on Wednesday approved the practice’s request for permission to save 10 parking spots at the back of the clinic to be used for the mobile testing centre.

Program a glimpse of the real thing By TESSA RANDELLO

Doctor, doctor: Simulated patients Paul and Irene Taylor with Charmaine Han-Menz, a 4C student at Monash School of Rural Health. Mr and Mrs Taylor both thoroughly enjoy the work they do at Monash School of Rural Health. “We love doing it, it is particularly rewarding because you see these people later on in their life and they have made it, they are a doctor now and you had something to do with that,” Mrs Taylor said. Mr Taylor said the briefs even detail how the patients should dress or act toward the doctors in the scenario. “Some of the scenarios can be quite confronting, I do a particular teaching role once a year where I turn up on a

motorcycle with my leathers and I say ‘I want Viagra, I want it now or I will go somewhere else’, and it turns out that I have not been to the doctor for 40 years,” Mr Taylor said. “So, (in that simulation) I have a number of disgusting social habits that they have to work their way through and for some students it is very confronting. “That particular simulation also gives the student doctors an ethical dilemma that tests their knowledge and even little things like when to ask for help.” Mr Taylor said being a simulated patient can be quite difficult sometimes,

because everything they say and do during the examination has to be perfect. “Sometimes the hardest part can be not laughing ... and sometimes trying to remember the date of birth can be very hard,” Mr Taylor said. Monash School of Rural Health director (Gippsland) Cathy Haigh said when the simulated patient program started at Monash it was one of the first globally. “What we used to do was test students by taking them out to meet real patients and you might have a man who is tired and in pain who really is not in the mood to talk to students, whether it

is a high-stakes examination for the students or not,” Ms Haigh said. “Whereas this way of doing it standardises the tests for everybody and you know that everyone was tested on the same calibre of station, with the same set of underlying skills and knowledge to pass it.” “We also do psychiatric situations and it could be someone coming in with a complaint that they feel tired and that could be any number of things and the student might not even get to the bottom of it, but as long as they are on the right track.”

little longer than usual as they were working in the January extreme heat when the Valley was shrouded in bushfire smoke. Yinnar and District Historical Society president Phillip Williams said the mural marked Yinnar’s history along a rail route that ran from the 1880s to the 1970s. Mr Williams said the historical society was located in the original Yinnar rail shed which was only one of a few buildings of its kind left in Victoria. “Squizzy Taylor came here on the train for the Boolarra races, when they ran a race train from Flinders Street,” he said.

YINNAR’S past has been given a spruce up with a reworked mural on the side of the town’s historical society celebrating the region’s rail history. Community and school groups came to the official unveiling on Wednesday, March 11 after the mural was given a new lick of paint courtesy of a $2000 Mirboo North and District Community Association grant. Local artists Pip Nikodemski and Marie Ward spent about a week giving the old mural a going over, working from a photograph of goods train number 132. Mr Nikodemski said the job took a

PAUL and Irene Taylor are spending their retirement educating medical students in an unorthodox way. The couple has turned to hypochondria and work as simulated patients for Monash School of Rural Health. The simulated patient program involves participants acting out scripts, prepared by the school, and pretending to have various ailments to assist hopeful doctors practice face-to-face examinations. Mr and Mrs Taylor are part of a small group which works with the university’s lecturers to present an authentic doctorclient interaction for students of the school. “We had all been part of the Light Opera Society locally and a friend of ours asked if we would like to do it,” Mrs Taylor said. “She roughly explained what it was and we thought it sounded just like acting and being on the stage, and then she told us you get paid for it, and that sounded even better. “What happens initially was they gathered a group together and we all have the same scenario, imagine you all have a broken arm, but you have to get our stories the same as one another. “You go through it with the lecturer and you have to discuss what you are going to say and what you are going to do and how you will react, that in effect is the training.” The scripts for simulated patients extend to more than just the words, and also include characters they have to adopt. “I think you have to remember it is like a play, your speech has to be what is written there otherwise your fellow actors are not able to do their part,” Mrs Taylor said. “At one point I had to be a Hungarian woman so I modeled myself on that and put on an accent for the day, it really has to be very authentic.”

Elbow bumps and foot taps all round THERE was one topic at the forefront of most people’s minds when Gippsland MP Darren Chester visited Heyfield Primary School last week. Mr Chester was invited to the school’s Monday morning assembly to present achievement certificates to the school’s student leadership team. With the school community’s high level of awareness of the coronavirus and how it can be spread, Mr Chester took a novel approach to

congratulating each of the students. Instead of shaking their hands as he presented their certificates, Mr Chester and the students chose to do a gentle foot tap or an elbow bump, or both. The new approach generated lots of smiles and a few laughs among the students, teachers, parents and Mr Chester. During his visit, Mr Chester also took the opportunity to present a new Australian flag for the school’s flagpole.

Teamwork abounds at school camp Farm fun: Elly, Ruby, Bun, Daisy, Chiara, Aleksandra, Will, Jake, Layla, Lucas and Hunter at St Michael’s Grade 5 camp. THE St Michael’s Grade 5 students attended Camp Coolamatong for four days of teamwork, fun and learning. Camp Coolamatong is located on the Banksia Peninsula near Paynesville. The goals for the camp were; to spend quality time with classmates and teachers in a setting that is natural and uncluttered and to also promote unselfishness and consideration for others through cooperation and teamwork. The students also experienced new activities in an unfamiliar environment and

developed independence and self-reliance. There were many activities for the students to experience such as canoeing, abseiling, a night hike, low ropes, archery, feeding the farm animals, a boat cruise, cycling and games at the beach. The boat trip was a popular activity, the first stop was Grange Beach where the students played games on the beach and enjoyed eating lunch together. Students then sailed to Raymond Island to participate in a koala walk, with one group sighting 25

koalas. Canoeing was also a favourite with some children choosing to capsize their vessels under supervision. Two of the highlights of the camp were the disco which had a ‘80s and Neon’ theme and ‘St Michael’s Got Talent’, where everyone was entertained by some very impressive singing, dancing and comedy routines. “It was a lovely camp, everyone had a great time and the children thoroughly enjoyed this experience,” St Michael’s principal Jodie Ware said

Lifestyle Choices

It used to be said that you only entered an aged care facility if you were unable to look after yourself. However, this is certainly not the case in the twentieth century. Now over 50’s are opting for the freedom of NO housework, NO lawns to mow and NO home maintenance. Choosing to downsize to a new home and taking the opportunity to relax or go on an adventure or two. For those who do need a little extra care assisted living facilities have had a makeover, often providing residents with modern amenities, beautiful furnishings, libraries, craft rooms, cafes and a community bus for day trips. However, with many people unaware of the options available there is still a need to promote these new lifestyle choices. Page 4 — The Latrobe Valley Express, TV

Moe Dance Eisteddfod has been cancelled Located in the heart of town, the courthouse is set to become a thriving community hub that links the past and the future in a landmark building that all can enjoy.

Community Corner with Gregor Mactaggart

THE Moe Dance Eisteddfod has been cancelled because of the coronavirus. Vice-president Shirley Weir said the decision to cancel the event was not taken lightly. “In order for us to have run the Moe Dance Eisteddfod we would have had very tight restrictions, it would have taken the love of our Eisteddfod out of it,” she said. Ms Weir said the Moe Dance Eisteddfod would be back in 2021.

Chess round-up PETER Bakker secured victory in the March series overshadowing second placed Eddie Wagner. Unable to take full advantage of their good positions were Matt Bolding and Ian Hamilton. Cliff Thornton found some strong threats but he had trouble forcing the win. There some positive tries by Steve Ahern, but the opponents’ attacks caused too much trouble. Some awkward scenarios for Bob Cooper left him chasing the leaders. For more information on chess or to join, contact Cliff Thornton on 0413 330 458 or Ian Hamilton on 5134 1971.

Tanjil Valley Art Show cancelled DUE to the recent Federal Government’s announcement regarding gatherings of 100 or more, the Art Show committee has with great sadness, decided to cancel this year’s show. Speaking to their sponsors, they have all unanimously agreed to return for next year’s show and as most have said, it will be a bigger and better “Greatest Little Art Show in Gippsland”. The committee hope you will support all the Art Shows sponsors and raffle donors in the tough times that are ahead for them. Perhaps it is easier, but it is not always a good thing to go on line. “Shop Local” is definitely a must in these strange times. A birthday or anniversary present most of our sponsors can help with, others, perhaps they may be closed, but offer other services. It could be worth checking. There is a full list on the Tanjil Valley Art Show Facebook and web pages. Until next year, take care, stay safe and ‘Haste ye back’.

Bass Valley Camping Ground closed SOUTH Gippsland Shire Council has revealed the Bass Valley Camping Ground near Loch has been permanently closed due to public health concerns. Due to the failure of the septic system the camp ground already had restrictions in place which intended to limit the use of the area to fully self-contained RV vehicles only. Unfortunately, the area has continued to be used by campers and vehicles without contained bathroom facilities. This has resulted in human waste being incorrectly disposed of and the need to close the camp ground in the interest of health and public safety.

Stepping back in time at school camp

ON Wednesday, March 11 the Grade 5/6 students at St Joseph’s Primary School travelled to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat to partake in a team building and history learning experience. It was like stepping back in time. A horse and buggy passed me sending a sweep of dust into my face, blocking the view of all of the wonderful shops. My favourite part was the Aura light and sound show. It was scary, exhilarating, exciting, tense, sorrowful and full of mystery. At told the

story of the Eureka Stockade, the battle that left a mark on Australian mining forever. It was an experience to remember. Written by Ciele Towb. MY favourite experience was panning because we got to try and find gold ourselves. I was very excited when I found my first speck of gold but then I realised it was just a hole in my pan! By then end of camp I had eight specks of gold. Written by Amelia Tunks.

WE took a tour of the Secret Chamber Mine. In the tour we watched a video which told the story of two Chinese brothers who decided to travel to Ballarat to find gold. They worked hard and did eventually find gold. Unfortunately, soon after the they found gold the mine collapsed due to the explosives they used and only one brother survived. The brother that survived went on to have a family and become a prosperous miner. Written by Ruby Francis.

Leadership training for Grade 6 students

Hard work: Grade 6 students Angad and Gabrielle trek through the mud during their leadership training day.

ST Paul’s Anglican Grammar School Grade 6 students recently enhanced their leadership and teamwork skills at their recent leadership training day held at The Summit. Students were pushed out of their comfort zones. They took part in a series of physical and mental challenges that were designed to develop confidence, resilience and stimulate proactive encouragement and support to other people.

Page 12 — The Latrobe Valley Express, Monday, 23 March, 2020

The students went forth with determination and persistence through many activities such as climbing walls, laser tag, giant puzzles, rope climbing up embankments, carrying tyres through mud, and a commando mud crawl under barbed wire. At the end of the day, although tired, the students had developed a deeper understanding of the meaning of teamwork and leadership.

On a mission: St Paul’s Grade 6 student Asmi in the ‘monster course’ at the school’s leadership training day.

Fun: Gabrielle is about to launch into the ball pit on one of the challenging courses during leadership training day.

Football and netball clubs encouraged to apply now Thanks mate: GERF secretary Robyn Dossett and Dane Roy with the cheque presented after the University of Houston punter’s fundraising efforts stateside.

HOUSTON may be a long way from Gippsland, but thanks to Dane Roy the spirit of mateship has extended across the Pacific. Former Gippsland Power player Roy was in his final year playing as a punter at the University of Houston when the East Gippsland bushfires struck during the Christmas-New Year period. “I was in Houston when Hurricane Harvey struck and I saw how the community dug deep to support each other during their hour of need,” Roy told The Express. Roy adopted fundraising mode, auctioning off some of his University of Houston team clothing, before the efforts ramped right up. “I sold the spare clothes that I had from UH and raised about $1000, but then I talked to Mike Pede who works for the UH Alumni Association. “They had seen the coverage of the bushfires and asked whether they could help out.” A raft of goods and experiences, including two tickets to a Houston Rockets and LA Lakers NBA game, were auctioned off to raise funds. “We got a lot of support from distillers, football team, I had a basketball signed by James Harden, UH jerseys thanks to the Alumni Association, Freddy’s, a big burger place in Houston as well as Hooters (Restaurant) got on board.” The fundraising efforts raised more than $13,000, with half going to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund and the other half to Lakes Entrance-based Benny Clark. “I wanted to help indigenous Australians with some funds and Benny does a great job in that space,” he said. “My sister Bec suggested GERF because they distribute funds to people who need it the most.” GERF secretary Robyn Dossett was on hand to accept the donation from Roy, 30, during a flying visit back to Australia. “To get international support like this is just fantastic,” she said. “Houston has had its own problems in recent years and we are grateful that people over there thought enough to help us out. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of many who have shown their support for the people of Gippsland.” More than $10 million has been raised by GERF, which is distributed directly to people in need. Roy, who married fiancee Chiara on March 7, is set for tryouts stateside ahead of the NFL draft in April. He enjoyed a stellar final college season, lifting his punting average from 42 yards in 2018 to 46.9 yards in 2019 due to some calculated gameplan changes. “The coach said instead of kicking it high, kick it away from the punt returner and open up the field,” he said.

Valley’s striking win TENPIN BOWLING

MORWELL ended a 16-year title drought with an impressive victory at the recent Country Cup played in Mildura. The Latrobe Va lley side scored 177 points across the three-day tournament featuring 10 teams in total. That score was enough to claim the prestigious annual prize from Shepparton (154) with Bendigo rounding out the top three on 152 points. The 14-strong Morwell team

delivered the high games for men and women. Clinton Monds bowled the men’s high game with a superb score of 280, while Jodie Tindall recorded the top women’s game of 277. It was a big tournament for Tindall, who was inducted into the Country Hall of Fame. Three Latrobe Valley bowlers Bruce Mason, Nathan Luke (men) and Nicky Monds (women) earned selection in the All-Star teams named at the end of the tournament.

Wyncity Morwell venue manager Warren Stewart said it was an excellent result for the local side. “It was great to see the Latrobe Valley bring home the bacon for the first time since 2004,” Stewart said. “The Country Cup has been played since 1981 and is one of the biggest events on the tenpin bowling calendar. “To beat Shepparton, Mildura, Warrnambool, Colac, Horsham, Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and Wodonga is a fantastic achievement.”

FOOTBALL and netball clubs across Gippsland are being encouraged to apply for funding up to $10,000 for projects that keep their participants safe on the road. Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, said the grants were available to all clubs affiliated with AFL Victoria. “In the last round of funding, one club used a Towards Zero Club grant to purchase an electronic scoreboard that will play TAC road safety ads during matches,” Mr O’Brien said. Road safety experts and personnel from AFL Victoria and TAC will judge clubs on their commitment to keep their participants safe on roads and decide which clubs will receive the funding. Applications open on April 1. More details, including selection criteria, can be found at www. towardszeroclubgrants.com Mr O’Brien said football and netball clubs were the lifeblood of regional communities and could play an important role in encouraging players, families and supporters to drive safely on our roads. “I encourage clubs to review the criteria and look at ways they can help to promote road safety and potentially help to reduce road trauma,” Mr O’Brien said. “Less than one-third of all Australians live in regional areas, but regional Australians make up more than two-thirds of road trauma statistics. “Sporting clubs, together with community leaders, have an opportunity to help lead a safety-first culture for all drivers, particularly for young drivers, and assist to reduce road trauma in our community.”

Coach backs postponement decision Sport in brief MORWELL A Grade netball coach Rachael Paterson has backed the decision by officials to postpone the Gippsland League season. Football and netball competitions throughout country Victoria will be off until at least May 2 following recommendations issued by the AFL in response to the coronavirus crisis. “It’s not ideal for us to be saying the season is to be postponed, but the health and safety of our players is what’s important,” Paterson told The Express. “We understand the importance the role sport has in the community and we’ll just work together with our players and have them remain engaged and supported at this unknown time. “Only a week or so ago we were counting down the day until round one, but now we’ll work really closely and support each other from A grade down to the Under-13s.” - HAYLEY MILLS

St Michael’s Badminton is off due students make a to coronavirus fears splash at carnival ANOTHER sport affected by the coronavirus pandemic is badminton. Latrobe Valley Badminton Association officials made the decision last week to postpone it’s season. “We will not be starting the seasons as planned and advertised, as we have had to suspend the season due

A TEAM of students represented St. Michael’s School at the Regional Swimming Carnival in Warragul. The team was very successful with one student Max, going on to compete in the State Swimming Carnival later in the year. Grade 3/4 teacher Sharon Dortmans commented on the

athletes’ great sportsmanship, enthusiasm and camaraderie with all other swimmers.

Delays in sport have happened before WITH leagues and associations in Gippsland shutting down to coronavirus, questions have been asked whether this is the first time that a disease has stopped football and other sports. In 1919 the finals series of the Morwell/Mirboo FA was deferred for two weeks because of the flu epidemic. The government banned all sporting and other gatherings to stop the spread of the flu.

In 1937 all children up to age 18 were banned from attending the South Gippsland FA grand final because of the potential threat of infantile paralysis (polio). Police were stationed at the gate to turn children away. In 1914, the Omeo DFA cancelled three rounds of football due to an outbreak of diphtheria, affecting three teams. In 1921, the flu epidemic hit Gippsland with the Glenmaggie team having 12 players come down with the flu. More than 100 workers at the Glenmaggie Weir contracted the flu and were taken to Sale, Heyfield and Traralgon hospitals. - LAURIE WILLIAMS

Barney seals second medal triumph CRICKET LVDCL By GREGOR MACTAGGART

MORWELL all-rounder Robert ‘Barney’ Webber has won his second Byrne/James Medal. The Tigers ace polled 19 votes to be crowned Latrobe Valley District Cricket Association Premier A Grade’s best player in the 2019/20 season. The accolade comes a decade after Webber won it for the first time as a Newborough Bulldogs player in the old Central Gippsland Cricket Association competition. He now joins the likes of Robert Phoenix (five), Anthony Bloomfield (five), Davin Charleston (four), Andrew Philip (three) and Kaushik Aphale (two) as multiple winners in the past 25 years. Holdsworth, a joint-winner of the Byrne/James Medal in 2013/14, also sealed the batting average (405 runs at 57.86), but Moe
