BEANIES FOR A SPECIAL CAUSE Devastation for Josie Ruyg’s family has not dampened her passion and spirit to raise funds for a good cause close to her heart. With the help of her school, Traralgon South Primary, local community, family and friends, the nine-year-old (pictured with younger brother Bowie) continued her fundraising efforts amid the coronavirus outbreak. Even when lockdown thwarted her original idea of a school disco, Josie turned to Plan B with great effect.

Op Shop volunteers left heartbroken by dumping

VOLUNTEERS at the St Luke’s Op Shop in Morwell were left shattered on Friday after discovering a truckload of rubbish dumped outside their shed. It is the latest in a series of hammer blows for the Uniting Church, which temporarily closed the store on Princes Drive for a second time last week due to changes in coronavirus restrictions. Spokesperson Martin Carruthers said the dumping of rubbish is a regular headache for the small band of volunteers, but the volume of this current load was unprecedented. “There was broken gym equipment, broken down furniture, cabinets, a series of miscellaneous items and children’s toys which were dirty, he told The Express.

Funding relief now available

REGIONAL accommodation businesses affected by the lockdown on some metropolitan suburbs will now be eligible for relief funding. Victorian Industry Support and Recover Minister Martin Pakula announced on Thursday the government would move to assist operators who will lose income due to cancelled bookings. It comes as more than 300,000 Melburnians MARTIN PAKULA living in 12 postcodes are placed under stay-at-home orders July 29, meaning many have been forced to cancel holidays booked at locations across the state. A $5 million fund will be made available to regional businesses including motels, caravan parks and short-term rentals which can demonstrate losses due to the new restrictions. Payments of up to $225 per cancelled booked night will be paid, with conditions including that full refunds are provided and no cancellation fees are levied. Businesses in 48 regional local government areas will be covered for eligible bookings that were received from hot zone postcodes. “We know that the last thing that regional accommodation houses and caravan parks needed was more obstacles after six months of struggle due to bushfires and coronavirus,” Mr Pakula said. “Lockdowns bring no joy to anyone, but we’re standing with businesses in the regions and the suburbs as we navigate a path to the other side of this crisis.” Businesses that have received payroll tax refunds and waivers or $10,000 Business Support Fund grants are eligible for the further $5,000 grants. Businesses can register for the $5,000 local lockdowns grant and the regional accommodation support fund at www.business.vic.gov.au.

Grace’s Gold-en glory On the job: Fallen director Grace Griffith on the set with actor Daniel Cosgrove. By TESSA RANDELLO

TRARALGON-BASED Grace Griffith won a Gold Remi award at WorldFest Houston International Film Festival last week for her short film Fallen. The 24-year-old joins worldfamous directors like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and David Lynch on the list of Gold Remi winners. Fallen is set in Mont St Quentin in France during World War I, and captures discussions between a wounded Captain and soldier in the trenches of the war. Ms Griffith started creating the film four years ago as part of a

final year project in her Bachelor of Film and Television at Swinburne University. “The project just grew into something so much bigger than it started as,” she said. “Most of the filming for Fallen was done at my parents’ property in my hometown of Wandiligong in north-east Victoria where we dug a trench to film in, and some filming was also done in Melbourne.” “Most of the post production work was done in Gippsland, I moved here about 18 months ago. During the post-production stage I met a lot of Gippsland creatives who came on board to help finish the project. “There is so much work that goes

into filming a movie, behind the scenes there is pre-production, script revisions and we were working with flares so we needed permits, we needed the police on board and a safety supervisor just for that part of it. “There was also lots of effort that went into making sure that everything in the film was as authentic to the period as possible.” Ms Griffith said it was “pretty full on” to organise the 40 cast and crew over three sets to create the film. “It is definitely like my baby, I wrote, directed and produced the film and just to be announced as a finalist in such a prestigious award was a dream come true, I hadn’t

even thought about winning at that point,” she said. “Winning a Gold Remi is a testament to the hard work that everyone has put into Fallen. I’m over the moon. It’s rewarding to have mine and my team’s hard work over the last four years recognised.” Ms Griffith funded most of the film herself, but a few sponsors joined the project once filming was complete. “Fallen is doing the festival circuit for the next 12 months now and I already have some more projects in the works to hopefully announce soon,” Ms Griffith said.

THE Latrobe Valley GovHub in Morwell received a major facelift last week when the world’s largest light gauge facade modules were hoisted onto the Church Street building front. Castlerock Property assistant development manager Harriett Sestak said the installation signalled a milestone moment in construction of the $300 million building. “This was a year’s worth of planning and design to reach today’s milestone, it’s a fine engineering feat,” Ms Sestak said. “This facade brings the building to life, there had been copious amounts of hours organising it. This is an incredible world-class building here in Morwell.” Ms Sestak said construction was a month ahead of schedule with completion expected in September and occupancy to start in January 2021. The 18 prefabricated steel façade modules were manufactured in Dandenong and assembled on-site before they were hitched onto the building with a crane. Each module weighs four tonnes measuring 14.5 metres high and eight metres wide, containing 2.2. kilometres of steel, making them the largest light gauge steel facade modules in the world. The modules form a key architectural feature of the three-storey building’s facade and roofline, which represents the Latrobe Valley’s industrial history by forming the shape of bucket wheel dredgers. Ms Sestak said the building would contain 75 per cent locally procured materials, services and trades, and construction was expected to provide 100 jobs. The completed project is forecast to generate an annual $15 million economic boost for the Latrobe Valley.

Tax toolkit to help out small business

THE Australian Taxation Office has released a tax time toolkit designed to help small businesses and their tax advisers. The toolkit packages up a series of easy-to-understand fact sheets on topics that small businesses need to know this tax time, especially given the tax implications of COVID-19. “As we all continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, we completely appreciate that it’s a really tough time for many small businesses,” ATO Assistant Commissioner Andrew Watson said. “Our job is to continue to support businesses who need help with their tax and super obligations, in partnership with the tax profession. “Many small businesses have had a really difficult few months, and we fully acknowledge this. “From bushfires to floods to COVID-19, we know times are tough. Small businesses have a long to-do list, and tax obligations are just one of many items that need to be done. “We also know that many small businesses rely on and trust the advice of their tax professional. Whether you use a registered tax professional, or lodge your own tax return, we hope our toolkit will be helpful when the time is right to sit down and consider lodging your income tax return.” The toolkit includes a set of fact sheets to help you understand a range of tax time topics, including: ■ home-based business expenses - if as a business owner, you’re claiming deductions for the costs of using your home as your main place of business. ■ pausing or permanently closing your business - if you’ve had to pause or permanently close your business due to COVID-19. ■ motor vehicle expenses - if you’re claiming a deduction for motor vehicle expenses for your business. ■ travel expenses - if you’re claiming a deduction for expenses you incur when travelling for your business. ■ using your company’s money or assets - if you’re a director or shareholder of a company that operates a small business, and you take money out of your company or use its assets. “Don’t forget, it’s best to ask for help with your tax if you need it,” Mr Watson said. “And it’s never too late to speak with us or a registered tax professional if you aren’t sure about something or need a helping hand.” The tax time 2020 toolkit for small business is available at ato.gov.au/ SBtaxtimetoolkit

Chester slams Bunnings decision

FEDERAL Member for Gippsland Darren Chester slammed last week’s decision by Bunnings to stop sourcing timber from VicForests. “It is extraordinary that Bunnings would make this premature decision without any genuine consultation with its local suppliers and jeopardise the financial futures of dozens of timber workers and their families in Gippsland,” Mr Chester said. “At a time when all jobs are at a premium and Gippsland is recovering from the combined impacts of drought, bushfires and the coronavirus, Bunnings

management is demonstrating no respect for working class families. “Management should reconsider its decision, particularly while legal challenges are still pending in relation to the case involving VicForests that Bunnings is concerned about. “We have a world-class timber industry in Victoria where 94% of forest is protected and a small proportion of native forests are harvested each year under VicForests’ control, then forests are allowed to regenerate in a sustainable cycle over 80 years. “It’s the ultimate renewable industry

with young growing trees absorbing more carbon dioxide, compared to mature forests, and timber harvested according to the strictest standards in the world. “Gippsland timber mills have invested in new technology to add value to the trees harvested with manufactured products that are in high demand. Wood that used to end up as waste or low value wood chips, is now joined and glued to make high value products that are available for home handymen and the construction sector to purchase. “Bunnings has shown complete

contempt for their suppliers and hardworking timber industry families with a premature decision which is all about virtue signalling and nothing about the environmental sustainability of the industry.

“The VicForests issue is still subject to appeal in the courts system and I fear that Bunnings will replace the Australian-made product on those shelves with imported timber which is harvested with less environmental scrutiny.”

Milestone: Morwell’s Bernie Formaran studies at home. June 11 marked the one year since Bernie sustained life-threatening injuries in a car accident on the Monash Freeway in Melbourne. photograph hayley mills

Home is where courageous Bernie’s heart is

By CHER JIMENEZ

JUNE 11, 2019 will forever be a date etched in the memory of the Formaran family. At around 12.15am, the family was on its way to Melbourne Airport when its SUV hit a concrete pillar on the Monash Freeway. Four members of the family were inside the car - mum Aileen, dad Ronald and siblings Nicole and Bernie. Bernie, then a Year 7 student at Lavalla Catholic College, had just turned 13 and celebrated her birthday with family members two days prior. She sustained life-threatening injuries with doctors performing multiple

surgeries in Melbourne to save her life. A year on, everyone has recovered from their injuries except Bernie. She is now using a wheelchair, some of her memories have been lost due to the impact of the crash and she had to work hard on her fine motor skills to be able to do the activities that she liked such as drawing. “My 14-year-old is my new one-yearold,” Mrs Formaran said. Mrs Formaran told The Express she had “accepted the fact that this is the new Bernie” and that she felt like being brought back to the time when her daughter was still a toddler. “It was like having a one-year-old child

House built before the 1990s?

she’s asking heaps of questions - where do fruits come from, she’s very curious,” she said. Mrs Formaran said the journey to recovery was not easy for the family especially for Bernie who was placed in an induced coma for two weeks while doctors performed a couple of surgeries. Mrs Formaran said Bernie continues to make “baby steps” in her recovery 12 months on from the accident. “She’s now gone back to drawing which she really loves, she can tie her shoes independently and move herself from the wheelchair to her bed, peel carrots, her speech has improved as well as her memory and she can send text

messages on her phone,” Mrs Formaran said, acknowledging all the therapists supporting her daughter. Bernie is also going back to Lavalla when Term 3 begins as a Year 8 student. Mrs Formaran said her daughter would be doing shorter hours of study in school and will be attending with a carer for two to three days a week. She said it was the family’s religious faith that kept them going throughout this whole ordeal. “Don’t lose hope. You may feel that you’re being pushed to the edge but you won’t find yourself alone,” she said, adding she also believes her daughter will walk again.

Schnitz Traralgon owners are celebrating their first year of ownership. Renee Gore, husband Ross Gore and his brother Matthew Clough purchased the store on July 1, 2019 and despite challenges of last 12 months, they have loved every minute of running Schnitz Traralgon. It is an independent complaint service for people with a disability. photograph supplied Disability Commission is an independent and free service it allows for further capacity to ensure the rights of people with disabilities are upheld,” he said. “(It) can investigate support workers who put people with disabilities safety and risk in jeopardy and take subsequent action.” Mr Terranova told The Express as a disability advocate service, the complaints GDAI hears from people with disabilities “can be wide and varied from poor service, to not being treated with dignity and respect”. He said they recently worked

with a NDIS participant, who for the past 12 months had been billed for invoices rounded off to the nearest hour, however the actual work undertaken was less than the time being charged. “Essentially 40 to 45 minutes of support work undertaken, but the family / NDIS billed for one hour,” he said. “Times this by two to three times a week and very quickly the individual with a disability is incredibly disadvantaged.” Mr Terranova said there are a total of 4715 people with disabilities in Gippsland, who have NDIS plans.

AN independent complaint service where people with disability can seek grievance against a disability worker was launched in Victoria this month. The new Victorian Disability Worker Commission aims to protect the safety of people with disability by acting on complaints against the conduct of workers in the disability sector. The commission, led by Victorian Disability Worker Commissioner Dan Stubbs, has the power to ban any worker found unfit to deliver disability services. “At a time when people with disability are more isolated and vulnerable than ever, we will support and protect people’s basic right to safety - and their right to live free from harm and abuse,” Mr Stubbs said. The free service offers a ‘no wrong door’ approach with the commission working with other regulators such as the Disability Services Commissioner who takes complaints involving some service providers and National Disability Insurance Scheme which investigates service providers and workers funded by the NDIS. A commission spokesperson said the complaint system would protect people with disability from all groups “regardless of the type of impairment whether physical or psychosocial”. Under the scheme, people can complain against a disability worker’s standard of work, the client’s knowledge, skill or judgement of the worker, their capacity to provide a safe service or an alleged breach of the Disability Service Safeguards Act 2018. Gippsland Disability Advocacy Inc chief executive officer Adrian Terranova welcomed the establishment of the commission saying people with disabilities will now have “greater opportunities” to share their concerns about a worker. “Given the Victorian Worker

Plan B-eanie is a winner at school By HAYLEY MILLS

Beanies for brain cancer: Siblings Josie and Bowie Ruyg raised funds for brain cancer at Traralgon South Primary School.

photograph hayley mills

DEVASTATION for one young girl’s family has not dampened her passion and spirit to raise funds for a good cause close to her heart. With the help of her school, Traralgon South Primary, local community, family and friends, Josie Ruyg, 9, continued her fundraising efforts amid the coronavirus outbreak. Even when lockdown thwarted her idea of a school disco, Josie turned to Plan B with the help of her mum Renee Paulet. “Our original idea was we were going to do a disco, but the silly corona came and destroyed that plan so that’s on hold for now, Josie said. Josie’s passion for fundraising comes after her dad was diagnosed with brain cancer last year. “I don’t want anyone else to feel the pain like I do, she told The Express. Ms Paulet said her daughter remained optimistic that she could make a donation to a charitable organisation this year. “We rang (school principal) Mr (Joel) Blythman and asked could we do a design a beanie competition and donate the money to Carrie’s Beanies for Brain Cancer because she wanted to help the brain cancer scientists, Ms Paulet said. Mr Blythman said the school community had been eager to play their part in the fundraiser. “From our perspective we’re

really keen to support our students contribution beyond the school and to the community, and support a local family with a cause that is close to our hearts, Mr Blythman said. Josie and student leaders developed the beanie templates with as little adult input as possible. “They had a little bit of adult intervention and support but this is the end result of all the kids involved in this, Mr Blythman said. A multitude of different and colorful creations came out of the woodwork with each entry donating $2 to the cause. “We had one hundred entries and in our school we have 118 students, Josie said. “We also had a little kid who was like three or so who wanted to enter. Students then had the opportunity to vote for their favourite design. “We had the grades come out with each of their classroom teachers and sit in front of the beanies and we talked about what they look like, Mr Blythman said. “If they were to allocate a vote with a sticker, how would they allocate that? Were they looking for colour, something unique? Something that is very individual? “We also had a good conversation about it and what the purpose was for. “Students were then all given an orange sticker and they were free to choose which one they wanted to vote for. Mr Blythman was then

given the final votes and left to decide first, second and third with prizes donated from the Ruyg family and local business Shaky Spear Milk Bar in Traralgon. A staff member from the school, who is a member of a local crafting group is hoping that some the winning designs may come to life. This is not the first attempt at fundraising for the Grade 3 student, although the day didn’t quite go to plan. “Last year she did a wear a beanie to school day but the day ended up being 30 degrees. Ms Paulet said. Warmer temperatures didn’t stop the kindness of people digging deep to raise money for Peace of Mind, an organisation that gives support to brain cancer patients, their carers, family and loved ones. Josie managed to raise just shy of $1000 during the past two years. This year Josie has managed to raise $562. Ms Paulet said Josie’s fundraising efforts had rubbed off on her younger brother Bowie, 6. “We ended up with a total of $289 from the beanie fundraiser, she said. “Josie and Bowie then, in isolation, made apple sauce from apples on our tree and sold them at the local shop, making $163 plus $110 from family and friends.

Victoria’s COVID-19 cases rising THE total number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Victoria is 2536 with 74 new cases reported yesterday. The overall total has increased by 67, with seven cases reclassified. Within Victoria, 16 new cases are linked to outbreaks, four new cases have been identified through routine testing and 53 cases are under investigation. One new case has been detected in a returned traveller in hotel quarantine. There have been no new deaths reported. To date, 20 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria. There have been 401 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria acquired through unknown transmission. There are currently 543 active cases in Victoria, including one in Latrobe City. The region’s total number of cases remains at nine. With two separate outbreaks in public housing towers the state government announced new measures to slow the spread of the virus amongst these communities. The nine towers involved are now closed and residents are required to stay in their homes at all times. The number of hotspot postcodes was expanded yesterday to include 3031 and 3051. They join the already restricted postcodes of 3012, 3021, 3032, 3038, 3042, 3046, 3047, 3055, 3060 and 3064. “Victorians in these locked down suburbs are being urged to do their bit in the fight against coronavirus - stick to the rules and get to a testing station,”Victoria’s chief health officer, Professor Brett Sutton said. “This virus is not selective, it will impact anyone it encounters, and personal contact is the clear source of its transmission. “More than 300,000 people live across these suburbs. We need everyone to do their part and ensure it is stopped in its tracks. “There is no excuse for not getting tested. “We have people knocking on your door, coming to your neighbourhood - we are bringing the testing to you. “There are also several drive-through and fixed sites where people can go. “And no matter where you live, it remains critical to practice good hygiene in and outside the home - wash your hands regularly, cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow and try to avoid touching your face, “Stay 1.5 metres away from anyone you don’t live with and avoid crowds, especially indoors. “If you can keep working from home - you must keep working from home. “We have made some great progress in slowing the spread of coronavirus, but we are still seeing new cases in the community. “Don’t take this disease lightly.”

Op Shop volunters left shattered By GREGOR MACTAGGART

VOLUNTEERS at the St Luke’s Op Shop in Morwell were left shattered on Friday after discovering a truckload of rubbish dumped outside their shed. It is the latest in a series of hammer blows for the Uniting Church, which temporarily closed the store on Princes Drive for a second time last week due to changes in coronavirus restrictions. Spokesperson Martin Carruthers said the dumping of rubbish is a regular headache for the small band of volunteers, but the volume of this current load was unprecedented. “There was broken gym equipment, broken down furniture, cabinets, a series of miscellaneous items and children’s toys which were dirty,” he told The Express. “We believe it is a truckload worth

of rubbish, certainly too much for a tandem trailer. “We’ve never had as much (rubbish) like this - it is just heartbreaking.” Mr Carruthers said it is likely that the Uniting Church would need to book a private contractor to come and take the rubbish to the tip. “We look like we’ll have to wear the cost of getting the rubbish by a private person to come in their truck and take it to the tip,” he said. “It could cost hundreds, which is probably a week’s takings for the Op Shop. “We use the funds raised by the Op Shop for the Church community primarily, but it is also there to help out people in need. “The items are a fraction of the price you would normally pay.” Mr Carruthers said the incident would be reported to the Morwell Police.

WE’RE HERE TO HELP!

A NEW partnership designed to enhance services on offer for the most vulnerable members of the community was launched last week. Morwell Neighbourhood House and St Vincent de Paul Society in Morwell have joined forces to cross-pollinate, with Vinnies now providing the financial support for the House’s food bank. House manager Tracie Lund said the new partnership was a “win-win” for both organisations and would allow them to focus their respective efforts where they are needed most. “Emergency food relief is critical support for our community, so we’re really grateful that this in-the-trenches work can continue,” Ms Lund said. “It’s about us working to our strengths, what it’s going to cost Vinnies to input to the food bank is a lot less than what they would normally spend on food cards and that sort of thing. “It’s a win-win for both of us so they’ll refer people to us but we can continue to service the community. “Anyone seeking assistance for food from Vinnies will be referred to us and the food bank is still open to anybody.” St Vincent de Paul Society Morwell president Kevin Hutchinson said he was “really excited” by what the partnership meant for both organisations. “For us, food provision is different because we home visit, so if there’s 10 people needing food you can’t always get to them in one day,” Mr Hutchinson said. “When you’re utilising the food bank it’s a lot cheaper to provide food to people in need. “Our role will be to fund the food bank component, and in return Tracie will be able to offer people our services like clothing, bedding, furniture and things like that. “That then frees up money for us to spend on things like domestic violence support, medication, all those sorts of things. It’s not just cost-saving for us, we spend it in other areas where it’s really needed.”

Federation University and Latrobe City sign collaborative agreement FEDERATION University and Latrobe City Council have strengthened their commitment to a successful economic transition of the Latrobe region by signing a Memorandum of Understanding. The MoU builds on their history of collaboration and aims to further establish Latrobe City as a regional city with a strong university offering. Through the formalised agreed partnership, the two organisations will work together to: ■ Identify and address local workforce skills shortages. ■ Collaborate to seek government support for the up-skilling and re-skilling of Latrobe’s workforce through free or subsidised short courses. ■ Advocate to support the region’s economic and

social growth, health outcomes and educational attainment. Both organisations have joined forces to position the municipality as a ‘hub of excellence’ in the areas of health, aged care, carbon innovation, renewable technologies, food and fibre, the visitor economy and advanced manufacturing/engineering. This will occur through joint advocacy, research partnerships, workforce training and education opportunities, and the promotion of research and development for key sectors. “Universities have an important role to play in the transition of their local communities,” Federation University vice-chancellor and president, Professor Helen Bartlett said. “By building on the strong existing partnership

between Federation University and Latrobe City, we can help raise the profile of education, training, research and innovation and generate meaningful outcomes for the region.” Latrobe City said the partnership was pivotal. “We all understand the value of education and training and having Federation University here in our city places us at the forefront of research and education in Regional Victoria,” a council spokesperson said. “A valued partnership and a shared understanding is beneficial to the future of our region. “Innovation and research are an absolute must in any developing area, as our community continues to transition, education and training will become more imperative.”

Hyland Highway upgrade work set to get underway THE next stage of a $10 million upgrade of the Hyland Highway will get underway soon with realignment of the major intersection between the Highway and Grand Ridge Road at Willung South. Nationals Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien said he had been campaigning consistently for improvement to the Hyland Highway which carries significant volumes of traffic between the Latrobe Valley and Yarram. Through the work of Federal Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester, the federal and state governments are contributing $10 million to the upgrade. “I’m pleased that the next stage of these works will get underway soon with a $2.19 million contract being awarded in late May for improvements to the Grand Ridge Road intersection,” O’Brien said. “The Hyland Highway is a difficult and dangerous road and the intersections along it have often been the scenes of fatal accidents. “I would like to see much more realignment and elimination of curves as part of the upgrade but at the very least we are getting significant improvements.” The new contract will convert the existing Y-intersection to a T-intersection, install new turning lanes, widen the road and seal some of the shoulders as well as upgrading the existing bus stop. Mr O’Brien said this will improve one of the busier intersections on the highway and follows works to improve the camber on the curve at the Carrajung Lower Road intersection where new safety barriers have also been installed. “There is still a lot of work to do on the Hyland Highway and the prospect of the Star of the South Wind Farm construction coming up would increase the need for shoulder sealing, widening of the road and reducing the number of curves where possible,” he said. “The road takes a significant volume of boats and caravans as well as log trucks and milk tankers and the terrain makes it difficult to deliver a safe drive.”

Livestock webinar

THE Victorian Farmers Federation is holding a free webinar for all livestock farmers to inform them of the options available for livestock pain relief and says producers need to consider the best fit for their operation to achieve the best results. VFF Livestock Group president Leonard Vallance said the number of pain relief product choices in the market has risen dramatically in the last few years and it can be difficult for livestock farmers when choosing the best product for their stock. “We’ve seen an explosion in the number and availability of pain relief products in Australia, partly due to the increased interest in the use of these products from farmers,” Mr Vallance said. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to pain relief products. Farmers need to be aware of both the advantages and disadvantages of each product and consider the type of pain relief they are after,” Mr Vallance said. Victorian farmers have the opportunity to register for a free online webinar run in conjunction with the VFF on Thursday, July 9 hosted by Dr Andrew Whale from Livestock Logic that will cover the options available to dairy, beef and sheep farmers and the best fit for their operation. THE Rotary Club of Moe donated $5000 to Gippsland Rotary Centenary House and Latrobe Regional Hospital last week. The club held a golf day in March to raise funds and luckily were able to go ahead with the event just before coronavirus restrictions tightened in Victoria. Rotary Club of Moe president Helen Morrison said the club were elated to be able to donate some of the proceeds to worthy causes in the community. “We were lucky that our golf day was moved forward by a week and it went ahead just before the restrictions were imposed,” she said. “We are grateful to everyone who donated and were very happy to donate to two great local causes.” The donation to Gippsland Rotary Centenary House will be used for security upgrades to the building. Deputy chair Diane Wilkinson said donations was essential for continued operation of the facility. “We are very grateful for the donation, the feel of this place is warm and friendly and we love to be able to continue the work that we do,” she said. “The reason we are able to do all of this is down to the amazing volunteers, I am also a member of the Rotary Club of Moe so being a part of this supportive community environment is fantastic.” Gippsland Rotary Centenary House operations manager Carol Crewe said when you are “dealing with the house day-to-day you can see exactly where this money goes, it is great to be able to help people with whatever they need.” The donation to LRH will go towards the Support Life Appeal, raising money to replace defibrillators at the hospital. The appeal stared in December of last year and Moe Rotary’s donation takes the appeal to $91,000 of its $125,000 goal to replace 14 defibrillators

LRH critical services general manager and Support Life Appeal ambassador Claire Kent said the donation means a lot to the hospital. “It is a two way relationship between a hospital like LRH and the community, that engagement both ways is very important,” she said. “All staff in the hospital are trained with these defibrillators so standard machines across the hospital are important to reduce any chance in error, these machines are especially important because they are so varied they can even be used for monitoring. “In areas like critical care it is important to have these machines on hand to give help with any cardiac issues, not just for the cath lab.”

MP: Subsidised telehealth should stay

FEDERAL Member for Gippsland Darren Chester says subsidised telehealth services introduced during the coronavirus pandemic should continue to be funded through Medicare. The federal government expanded Medicare-subsidised telehealth services for all Australians in March to limit unnecessary exposure of patients and health professionals to the virus whenever treatment could be safely delivered over the phone or online. Mr Chester said appointments using video or telephone calls had benefited many people, particularly

those for whom travelling to appointments was difficult. “It is well-known that people in regional and rural areas have poorer health outcomes than people living in the city,” Mr Chester said. “One barrier to good health that many face is trouble accessing services. “Telehealth has been a valuable tool in our country’s fight against the coronavirus and many patients have valued the convenience and savings in time and money that it has brought. “There is a place for subsidised

Before the pandemic, the federal government had been working with GPs and GP groups on longer term arrangements for telehealth through the development of the Primary Care Plan, and to implement recommendations of the MBS Review Taskforce. Paying homage: Trafalgar Holden Museum president Neil Joiner with Peter Brock’s famous Torana.

THE King of the Mountain lives on at the Trafalgar Holden Museum with a display of cars that were driven by the late and great motoring champion Peter Brock. The museum is borrowing a selection of five classic cars driven by the nine-time Bathurst legend, which are on loan from the collection of motoring fan Terry Dowel. Trafalgar Holden Museum president Neil Joiner said the collection represented a “nice snapshot” of Brocky’s motoring history. “These cars hold a lot of significance and we are pleased to have been offered them,” Mr Joiner said. “It makes for an interesting collection and an important part of motoring history. He was such an Australian icon.” The display includes Brock’s first-ever “paddock

which took him around to win the 1974 Australian Touring Car Championship is on show. Mr Joiner said one of the more significant items was an FX Holden, which Brocky raced at Goodwood in England in 2006, the same year he was killed in a car crash, as well as the EH Holden that he had planned to race in the UK the following year. “The fact he was a Holden man adds so much more significance for us here at the Holden Museum,” Mr Joiner said. “And the fact Peter Brock and Holden are no longer with us is a sad state of affairs, and it adds so much more interest to the collection now that Holden is no longer.” Mr Joiner said he hoped the Brock collection would be at the Trafalgar Holden Museum for the next six months.

Digging deep: Pictured on site of the St Paul’s Traralgon Campus Early Learning Centre are Cameron Herbert (St Paul’s principal), Fiona McDonald (St Paul’s ELC director and Pre-Prep educator) and Tracey King (Head of St Paul’s Traralgon Junior School).

Hard at work on new playground

ST Paul’s Anglican Grammar School’s early learning centre has started work on a new playground. St Paul’s received a $200,000 grant from the state government’s Inclusive Kindergarten Facilities Program Buildings and Playgrounds program. The new area has been designed to encourage children of all abilities to use their imagination and explore the outdoor play areas, and includes a water play area with water pump and mud pit,

climbing areas, sandpit, raised ramp, an indigenous food garden, and vegetable and herb garden. The redevelopment of the playground will allow students to experience loose play, a play area based around exploration through play in a natural environment. The playground will give the school an area for students, parents, teachers and the wider community to gather, play and socialise.

Familiar face appointed as principal

DESCRIBED as a small school with a big heart, Sacred Heart Primary School in Morwell is about to start a new chapter. The school’s current deputy principal, Anne-Marie Robb will become principal at the start of Term 3. Ms Robb has worked in Catholic education across both the Melbourne Archdiocese and the Diocese of Sale for more than 21 years and says she is grateful for the opportunity to take on her first principalship. “I love working in Catholic Education because it gives every teacher the opportunity to teach the whole child,” she said. “Students are provided with a faithbased understanding of the dignity of the human person, which empowers academic and social development. “For me, it is both a privilege and a joy to be part of a community-minded

Catholic education leadership team.” Justin Greenwood has been principal at Sacred Heart since 2019. He will now begin a new role, as foundation principal of St Angela of the Cross Primary School, which will open in Warragul in 2021. Ms Robb said she was excited to honour Mr Greenwood’s legacy by empowering every student to reach their full potential. “We offer a warm and vibrant environment to enable a personalised learning approach for our students so they can thrive,” she said. “The staff and I are devoted to meeting the social and emotional needs of each child in our care. “Along with the students, we are committed to working together to create a dynamic learning environment for everyone in our community.”

Mr Greenwood said he is pleased to see an experienced and enthusiastic educator guiding the school. “Anne-Marie is a dynamic leader who will ensure Sacred Heart Primary School continues to be a welcoming community that is looking towards the future,” he said. The director of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Sale, Maria Kirkwood, congratulated Ms Robb on her appointment. “We are committed to nurturing staff, and harmonising the learning experience of our students,” she said. “Anne-Marie is dedicated to expert teaching practice and takes a holistic approach to education. “Her approach reflects the aspirations of our Catholic communities, as we work together to inspire faith and inspire learning.”

THE Gippsland Acoustic Music Club has decided to cancel the Acapella Festival and all club nights for the rest of 2020. Regional Arts Victoria and the Victorian Association of Performing Arts Centres have been doing a great deal of work in getting some guidelines for venues. At the current time they are too restrictive (and constantly changing) to allow the club to start again. The GAMC hopes by February that things will be better and life can get back to normal. The club’s ukulele lessons are also a casualty of COVID-19. All participants will be contacted later in the year to see if they are interested in continuing in 2021 and the club will roll over lesson fees.

REMEMBER WHEN TRARALGON HARRIERS By BARRY HIGGINS

MARY Edwards in 1989 was the first to complete the remarkable streak of four Traralgon Marathon victories in a row, after giving the men almost twenty years start. It still took the men another few years before Morgan Tucker equalled Mary’s feat with four straight from 1991 to 1994. A young Morgan Tucker attended Traralgon Technical School and in the 1977 school cross country run, to his surprise, finished outright second, behind, he thinks, Shane McLachlan. His teacher, Harriers founder Barry Thompson, motivated him and Harriers legend Richard Jeffery, who Morgan also knew, encouraged Morgan to join the Club. Other teenage friends Shane McLachlan and Len Rumble were also outstanding junior Harriers. Morgan enjoyed the friendships made at the Harriers, and took part in triathlons with Ian Cornthwaite and Keith Tomholt. Morgan said, “My first marathon in 1986 was the hardest - I hadn’t trained enough, and I was unaware of what was ahead of me. It was windy and cold, and I ran 3:31, when the finish was at Tyers”. Harriers coach Laurie Edmondstone gave him some training, and Morgan steadily improved his times.

Legend: Morgan Tucker crosses the finish line in third place in 2013, 27 years after his first Traralgon Marathon.

IN 1987, the year the Traralgon Marathon turned twenty, Rob Gilfillan, running for Glenhuntly, won the first of his three consecutive titles. Morwell triathlete Rob Zwierlein was the first Latrobe Valley runner to finish, in eighth place. Moe’s John Briet, a 24-hour record holder was eleventh. Also inside the magic three-hour mark in twelfth position was the first Harrier home, Harriers’ coach Laurie Edmondstone, then Bob Knight, followed by Bruce Salisbury and Ian Heafield. And a young Morgan Tucker, beginning his steady ascent to his ultimate top ranking, also broke the three-hour barrier. Sandy Drummond finished in just over three hours while Richard Jeffery and and Allambee resident Ian Cornthwaite crossed the line together eleven seconds later. Other locals to finish were Ray Sutton, Bernd Ritzer, Ross Simpson, Bill Caddy and Lance Thomas, all well-known Traralgon Harrier members from across the Valley. Legendary Australian ultramarathoner George Perdon ran in the 60-plus age group. And fifteen years after his first of two Traralgon Marathon wins, Melbourne runner Phil Lear still finished in the top dozen, breaking three hours. In later years when asked about his two victories, Phil Lear jokingly said, “I was able to do what Derek Clayton didn’t do - win two Traralgon Marathons!”

The Harriers perform well

OF the twenty Harriers who finished the 1988 marathon, ten were among the first thirty finishers - the club could rightfully feel pleased. Rob Gilfillan won his second Traralgon in a row, and a young Ian Cornthwaite again fell despairingly short of his first win, finishing 59 seconds behind Gilfillan, now listed as a Harrier. Mary Edwards won her third straight, while Morgan shaved one minute from his time to move up from 25th to 23rd. In 1989, giving the men a twenty-year start, Mary Edwards returned to win her fourth Traralgon Marathon - the first streak of four Traralgon Marathon wins in a row - not thought possible until then. The newspaper report overlooked Rob Gilfillan’s third consecutive outright victory. This time he finished almost two minutes ahead of Ian Cornthwaite, runner-up two years in a row and for the third time. And Morgan Tucker, learning from experience and with much hard work, improved by around 18 minutes and jumped up to fourth. Former world featherweight boxing champion Johnny Famechon, in his mid-forties, ran 3:28:31.

MARK Sinclair out-kicked Morgan in the last 1500 metres to win the 1990 Marathon and took another step toward reaching his ultimate goal - the 1991 Hawaii Iron-man triathlon. Morgan was ahead in the final kilometre but Sinclair passed the tiring leader, who ran second. “I should have run to survive . . Laurie (Edmondstone, Morgan’s coach) told me I went too hard, I should have let Mark lead (some of the way) and have a rest,” Morgan said. As a consolation prize, his second placing, a mere 90 seconds behind Sinclair, gave Morgan the Victorian country marathon championship.

Morgan begins his streak

After moving up from the midtwenties to fourth in 1989 and second in 1990, Morgan began his incredible sequence of Traralgon Marathon wins in 1991. After running alongside Robin Tullett at the halfway mark Morgan dropped him off to finish five minutes clear, with local David Laws third. Morgan said, “I didn’t feel any pressure, and felt good”. After winning at Traralgon for the first time he was second in the South Melbourne Marathon two months later before winning an Adelaide, a South Melbourne and three Traralgon Marathons in the next three years.

A close finish in 1992

IN a tight finish Morgan won for the second consecutive year, less than a minute clear of Peter Fuller with Ian Cornthwaite 30 seconds further back in third. Morgan, still the current country marathon champion, improved more than four minutes on his PB to win in 2:23:56, a time second only to Derek Clayton’s 2:13 record in 1970. Ian Cornthwaite, fifth in the Kuala Lumpur Marathon three weeks earlier, began aggressively and led by 100 metres after the first kilometre. Morgan was in a group close behind. Ian reached the 5-kilometre mark in just 16 minutes, and had increased his lead to 50 seconds. He continued to lead by two minutes at the 15-kilometre mark. Morgan became anxious about the lead established by his Traralgon Harrier club mate and gradually increased his tempo. At the 30 km mark Morgan had reduced Ian’s margin to 37 seconds. Running smoothly Morgan overtook Ian at 38 km and went on to score by 58 seconds from Peter Fuller, who had also passed the tiring Cornthwaite with 500 metres to go. Morgan said, “Corny was in front, on about 2:16 pace, but (Peter) and I passed him up the Marshalls Road

hill”. Morgan took the lead and kept it, clipping nearly seven minutes off his 1991 winning time. “I ran my own race,” he said. Four months later Morgan travelled to Sydney to tackle the iconic City to Surf race from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach, a 14 km hard and hilly slog, running shoulder to shoulder with 38,000 other runners in 30-degrees heat. About 60 metres from the finish line and in tenth place, just astern of the ultimate winner and future Olympian Julian Paynter, Morgan collapsed with dehydration. The ABC TV footage of the race shows him staggering to the side of the course before a St John’s Ambulance man rushes to his aid. Morgan recalls, “I spent a few hours in hospital on a drip, and was only allowed to leave when a fellow runner from the Valley arranged to take me back to my accommodation in Sydney”. Around this time, along with fellow Harrier Ian Cornthwaite, Morgan was selected to run the Otway Classic Road Relays - the running equivalent of the Tour de France and regarded as the toughest team race in Australia - competing with his fellow team members Pat Carrol and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sean Quilty against opponents of the calibre of Steve Moneghetti and Malcolm Norwood. Morgan and Ian each ran the event on three or more occasions.

1993 - three in a row

MORGAN was a late entry in 1993, still recovering from the recent Otway Classic where he was part of the seven-man team alongside champion Australian and Kenyan runners. Ian Cornthwaite was absent following a knee operation and Morgan ran with a severe ear infection. His team finished in sixth place, only 16 minutes behind Mal Norwood’s winning team. Morgan ran one 9.5 km stage in 30 minutes 50 seconds, over hilly terrain - the second fastest time. And with a number of fast Melbourne and interstate runners expected to compete at Traralgon, Morgan’s chances were under the radar. But he recalled, “I got back to feeling no pressure . .” Unsurprisingly, Morgan ran almost ten minutes slower than the previous year, but won his third in a row, comfortably ahead of local triathletes Ray Sutton and Phil Magee. With three in a row for Morgan the question was asked - what would the next year bring?

Morgan makes it four

MORGAN again cruised home in 1994. The spectators had time for a coffee before second-placed Graeme Alford, who later became a Melbourne Marathon Spartan, finished more than a quarter of an hour behind Morgan. Still in the top three, Ray Sutton was third ahead of Jeff Visser and Australian ultra-marathon legend Kelvin Marshall, who has run many Harriers endurance events. Tony Arrowsmith, still running exceptional times with the Harriers in 2020, was sixth, ahead of Peter Armistead and Bruce Salisbury - all under the three-hour pace. 1994 was Morgan’s final marathon performance for almost two decades. He was the first male to win four in a row.

In memory of a friend

IN 2013 Morgan ran his first marathon in almost 20 years for third spot outright in 2:53:02, winning the 50-59 male age group and again, 20 years on, the Victorian country marathon championship. In her Express Sports post-race report Lynda McRae explained that “ . . the end of his 19-year hiatus from marathon running was in honour of his close friend and former running partner Duncan Orr”. “Before Duncan died tragically in a road accident in February he had recruited the support of (Morgan) to help him break his own marathon personal best this year”, Lynda wrote. Morgan credited Duncan with getting him back into running, and was happy to help. Although he was not able to stay with the eventual winner, Cameron Hall, at age 50-plus Morgan placed third in a sub-3 hour 2:53:02.

Looking back through the archives at memorable sporƟng moments in the Latrobe Valley.

Teenager Templeton kicks a ton

KELVIN Templeton was acclaimed as the best footballer in Australia when he won the 1980 Brownlow Medal. The Footscray ace, who had won the VFL goalkicking award in 1978 and 1979, polled 23 votes to claim ‘Charlie’ ahead of Essendon wingman Merv Neagle. The win would prove the pinnacle of Templeton’s career that started in Traralgon. His Brownlow triumph arrived seven years after he burst onto the Latrobe Valley Football League scene as a fresh-faced 16-year-old. The year was 1973. Traralgon went into the season as defending LVFL premiers, but the Maroons still had room to introduce a tall and talented teenager into the senior side. Templeton had turned heads the previous season when he booted more than 80 goals for Traralgon’s thirds team. He debuted with two goals in the opening round as Sale scored an impressive 23-point win. Writing in The Express after Round 1, Tom Carter predicted champion goalkicker Ian Jennings could have some challengers for his crown in 1973. He would be proven correct as Templeton grew at senior level. Templeton’s first major haul came in Round 4 with a 12-goal haul in a 97-point demolition of Yallourn. Tom Carter from The Express, May 9, 1973. Traralgon’s Kelvin Templeton nearly broke the long-standing Ian Jennings’ record of 14 goals in one match on Saturday. Kelvin had enough shots, but the young fellow’s 12 for the day was grand. He is leading Ian by four goals on the senior list at present, but the way Jennings got his eight against Morwell, Templeton will need to break Jennings’ 112 goals for a season record if he is to take out the award. Templeton had shot to the top of the goalkicking charts with 23, four ahead of Jennings with Leongatha’s Ivan Rasmussen third on 17. After just four games at senior level, Templeton was named in the Latrobe Valley Football League squad for the VCFL championships, coached by Graham Gahan. Back-to-back efforts of 10 goals against Heyfield in Round 6 and Bairnsdale in Round 7 had Carter contemplating whether we would see another century goalkicker. Can Kelvin Templeton break Ian Jennings’ two goalkicking records this season? Jennings holds the record for the most goals kicked in a season (126) and the highest tally in one match (14). After seven matches, he has 49 goals to his credit, an average of seven a match. 1973 was also a notable one for The Express, which introduced a Friday edition to complement the Wednesday paper. Known as The Express Weekender, among its features was expanded sports coverage. The inaugural edition included an interview and back page photo with the young star who was fast gathering a big reputation. If dedication and level headed thinking are ingredients for a top VFL footballer, Traralgon’s Kelvin Templeton has got it made. Kelvin, 16, who leads the Latrobe Valley Football League goalkicking list after seven rounds, is likely to line-up at full-forward with the LVFL at Seymour tomorrow. He has kicked 49 goals and leads Moe’s Ian Jennings by 16. But Kelvin isn’t getting carried away with his performances and is sure things are going to get tougher

Mobbed: Supporters stormed onto the ground after Kelvin Templeton Templeton, then aged just 16, became the youngest player in the Latrobe Valley Football League history to boot a century of goals. His record still remains today.

T This is how you do it: Kelvin Templeton shows some youngsters the finer points of handball for a photo that appeared in the first-ever Friday edition of The Express in 1973.

Sensational: Traralgon’s Kelvin Templeton kicks truly to seal his 100th goal in 1973. as the year goes on. As for kicking the magical 100 goals, he thinks it’s going to be a very tough job. “It’s getting harder all the time and the second round will be a lot more difficult,” he said. He attributes some of his success this year to extensive pre-season training. “All the players at Traralgon have been a great help, too, especially in the first few games. “I like playing in the seniors as the ball is delivered better and other players look after you,” he said. He has had approaches from Footscray, but has decided he needs more experience before he goes to Melbourne. Kelvin has come up through the Traralgon juniors and last year kicked ‘’about 85 goals’’ with the third eighteen team. Just days later Templeton played for the LVFL in a 71-point interleague win against Waranga North-East at Seymour, where he was hit heavily during the match, but withstood the attention to boot some telling goals. The LVFL side included some other notable names such as Jeff Gieschen, Barry Rowlings and Traralgon champion Terry Hunter. How to curb Templeton’s brilliance

Page 18 — The Latrobe Valley Express, Monday, 6 July, 2020

was central in the thoughts of many opposing coaches. In Round 8, Traralgon took on Moe and while Templeton slotted eight majors, the Lions won the match by 13 points. Tom Carter posed the question whether Moe coach Ron Haeberle put an insulating ring around Templeton or were those Lions converging accidentally? The loss left Traralgon in fourth spot, trailing Leongatha, Moe and Sale. Templeton bagged hauls of two, four, five and six to take his tally to 74 by Round 12. He again showcased that bigger things were ahead when the Latrobe Valley took on powerhouse Goulburn Valley in an interleague blockbuster. Templeton booted eight goals as the LVFL prevailed 16.10 (106) to 14.12 (96). The Express, July 18, 1973. Kelvin Templeton and Charlie Healey gave their Goulburn Valley opponents no chance. Templeton took freak marks all day to finish with eight goals and was responsible for a couple more. Healey was ever elusive around the half-forward line and his two drop kick goals were superb. Templeton named third best behind Ernie Hug and Brian ‘Doc’ Rowlings. The young gun continued on his merry way, slamming seven goals in an 81-point win against Yallourn that lifted Traralgon up to second. The Maroons owned a 9-4 record, trailing Sale (11-2). The century was looming large, especially after Templeton took his tally to 89 thanks to an eight-goal effort against Warragul in Round 14. He was 20 goals clear of Jennings

despite the Moe champion booting 12 goals against Yallourn. The Traralgon and Templeton juggernaut was derailed somewhat in Round 15 by Heyfield, who recorded a famous 8.20 (68) to 7.17 (59). The defeat saw Traralgon tumble to fourth spot, trailing Sale, Moe and Leongatha. That set the scene for August 11, 1973 when Kelvin Templeton became the youngest footballer to boot a century of goals at Latrobe Valley senior level, a record he still holds today. Here’s how The Express reported the milestone occasion. Latrobe Valley football’s schoolboy goalkicking sensation Kelvin Templeton of Traralgon on Saturday became the youngest LVFL player ever to kick 100 goals in a season. When Kelvin booted his 10th goal against Bairnsdale last in the last quarter on Saturday, he joined Moe’s Ian Jennings in the LVFL 100 club. With two rounds remaining, Templeton has a great chance to break Jennings’ record of 112. Templeton started the game on Saturday in brilliant style and at half time booted eight of his team’s 10 goals. But after the interval he didn’t find things so easy and late in the last quarter, it seemed he might have to wait another week to pass the milestone. However, five minutes before full time, he kicked truly and the 100 was his. Footscray Football Club officials were at the game on Saturday and they must have been impressed with the young full-forward. Footscray beat Hawthorn in the race for Templeton’s services by the fraction of a mile. They would like to see him in Melbourne next year, but they might

have a struggle on their hands. He would miss the Round 17 clash with Moe due to illness and Traralgon were soundly beaten by Moe, 19.13 (127) to 5.7 (37). Jennings slotted nine goals to move to 96 for the season, cutting the gap to just four going into the final home and away round. Templeton returned to kick four goals as Traralgon defeated Leongatha by 20 points, although the Maroons had to be content with fourth on the ladder. Jennings booted six as Moe defeated Yallourn by 67 points, but it was Templeton who had done enough to finish top of the charts 104 to 102. Tom Carter reporting in The Express, August 29, 1973. Congratulations go to Kel Templeton on two counts. Firstly for winning the LVFL goalkicking award in the seniors and secondly for being the first player to win it in his first senior year. Congratulations also to Ian Jennings, who finished the season well and is the first LVFL player to score a century of goals twice, 1971 and this year. By finishing fourth, Traralgon found themselves in an elimination final against Heyfield and not for the first time in 1973, the Roos sealed a famous victory. Templeton was held goalless as Heyfield prevailed 10.11 (71) to 7.10 (52), a result that marked the end of the road for Traralgon’s season. Sale would go onto win the flag after defeating Moe by one point, 13.15 (93) to 13.14 (92). Templeton topped Traralgon’s votes in the Trood Award and Rodda Medal with 14, but well adrift of that year’s winner Barry Rowlings. The brilliant forward moved to Footscray for 1974 and proved an immediate sensation, booting six goals in his first game against Collingwood as a 17-year-old. Templeton became a star for the Bulldogs, kicking 494 goals in 143 games in nine seasons. Against St Kilda in 1978, he booted 15.9 as Footscray kicked a club record 33.15 (213). He finished the year with 118 goals, sealing the first of two Coleman Medal wins. Templeton made a sensational move to Melbourne in 1983, kicking 99 goals in 34 games, but nagging injuries took their toll and he retired before the age of 30.

Done for 2020: The Latrobe Valley Soccer League senior season was abandoned on Friday night. SOCCER By GREGOR MACTAGGART

THE Latrobe Valley Soccer League senior season has been abandoned. The axe finally fell on the aborted 2020 campaign following a meeting of the LVSL board on Friday night. One round was played at senior level in March before the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic reverberated across the country. Ultimately the lack of answers on 10 key points submitted by the LVSL to Sport and Recreation Victoria and Football Victoria proved decisive. “As a board and clubs we felt the answers to these points were necessary to allow our member clubs to make an informed decision around

a return to competition in a safe, sustainable and financially viable manner for our senior and miniroos competitions,” the LVSL said in a statement. “It is with regret we wish to inform the Latrobe Valley soccer community that we have not received all the answers we required ... notably, we still have no ‘Return to Play’ guidelines for our senior competitions. “As such the LVSL board regrettably wishes to advise that the 2020 senior men’s, senior women’s, reserve men’s and second division competitions will be abandoned for the 2020 season.” The LVSL pinpointed a start date for junior competitions (Under-12 and up) of Saturday, July 25, subject to any further announcements around

community sport and dependent on team entries from member clubs. The league has pushed back a potential start date for the Miniroos (ages 4-11) competitions until spring at the earliest. Soccer is the third major sport to pull the pin at senior level in the Gippsland region following Australian Rules football and netball. The LVSL said that while the decision was a difficult one to make, they were heartened by the support of its clubs. “The LVSL board has always maintained the position that the welfare and safety of our players, coaches, referees, volunteers and spectators was, and is paramount,” the league said. “We would like to acknowledge

Playing a complete season the aim of hockey officials

and offer our thanks to all players, coaches and volunteers who have put in a significant amount of work at club level over the last 3-4 months in incredibly challenging circumstances. “The majority of our member clubs were firmly of the opinion that they could not 100 per cent guarantee that they could ensure there was zero risk to our football community, and that of the wider community if we were to proceed with a senior season. “But out of the current adversity we see opportunities. “The LVSL board will used the downtime from competitions to plan and develop for the 2021 season and ensure that we are in the best position possible to come back stronger and bigger than before.”

Blandford Lad salutes at Bendigo HORSE RACING

MOE trainer Peter Gelagotis had a spring in his step after Blandford Lad returned to winning ways at Bendigo on Friday. The talented four-year-old relished the soft conditions to outstay Like The Clappers for a length and a quarter victory in the bet365 Racing Refunds

of the week for the Gelagotis stable. Moss ‘N’ Dale finished down the track in the $129,000 Winter Championship Final (1600m) at Flemington won by Sircconi on Saturday. Racing in Gippsland this coming week is at Sale on Thursday and Moe on Saturday.

HOCKEY By TESSA RANDELLO

THE Latrobe Valley Hockey Association will still run a full season this year despite a delayed start date. Seniors will start the season on Saturday, July 25 and hold 12 games, excluding finals, which will finish in late November. Juniors will also start on Saturday, July 25 with the grand final in late October. LVHA press secretary and junior coordinator Ash Vuillermin said due to the nature of the sport restrictions have been easy to follow for the association. “We were only really impacted by restrictions around the starting date of our season,” she told The Express. “Hockey does not have some of the same risks that other sports have because players are not close to one another and don’t touch the same ball.” Ms Vuillermin said the association would be able to comfortably run the full season because of the lights at the court and synthetic oval that will make it easier to manage hockey in the warmer months. “We started training as soon as we could, so have been training for about six weeks now... we are just trying to play as much

THE Sale greyhounds meeting on June 28 was a good one for Sharon-Lee and Jeff Chignell with the Rosedale trainers returning home with three winners. Seve Rose, prepared by Sharon-Lee, won the Gippsland’s Gold 98.3 Grade 5 (520m) in a time of 29.83 seconds. Seve Rose sprinted passed Airly Pablo, trained by Lesley Russell at Sale, to win by half a length. Kingfisher Rose, prepared by Jeff, won the GJ Gardner Homes Mixed 3/4 (520m) in a handy 29.49 seconds. The dog was coming off a success at Warragul five days earlier and extended the winning streak to claim the 13th win of his 46-start career. The Chignells produced the quinella in the second heat of the 440m series restricted to dogs with three to six wins. Leo Rose ($11.30) upstaged his more fancied kennelmate Nicholas Rose ($2fav) by a half-length in 25.23 seconds. The quinella paid $8.20 on Super TAB. Sandown Park was a happy hunting ground for Willow Grove trainer Kate Gorman on June 28. Mercurial chaser Stirling Lights justified his $1.60 quote by romping home in the fourth heat of the GRV Vic Bred Series Grade 5 (515m). The son of Aston Bolero pinged the lids from box four and never looked back, winning in a smart 29.63 seconds. Stirling Lights is no stranger to performing on metropolitan tracks, having saluted at The Meadows on June 16 and at Sandown Park in February. He has now won eight of 23 career starts and beat home Moe greyhound Impending in that heat. Rosedale trainer Paul Galea also enjoyed success when Flinders took down odds-on favourite Dani Thrills in the Giddy Up Grade 5 (515m). Flinders franked the form of his previous win at Warragul with the length success in a time of 29.57 seconds.

To celebrate the start of the season, Latrobe Valley Hockey Association will hold a gala day on July 18. “We are still in the planning phase of the gala but it will most importantly be a come and try day,” Ms Vuillermin said.

“There will be equipment for players to use, a barbecue and canteen will be open and it will just be a really fun day. We are also going to run a mini junior and senior competition with juniors starting at 10am and seniors at 1pm.” Training runs for juniors and seniors on Thursday nights.
