LUCKY ESCAPE

By MICHELLE SLATER

A MOUNTAIN bike rider was lucky to walk away with minor injuries after he fell off a 12-metre cliff and clung to a tree near Walhalla, causing emergency services to spend five hours rescuing him. The Warragul man, 64, was riding along the Great Alpine walking track when he lost control, rolled off the track and then fell five metres off the edge near Happy Creek, about three kilometres out of town just before 1pm on Tuesday. Emergency services responded and located the man at about 2:35pm. A VICSES spokeswoman said SES units worked in tandem with the CFA in what was a “difficult rescue that

required a high level of expertise and resources in an area with no vehicular access. She said rescuers had to cut a path through steep terrain, dense bush and blackberries to get him out. The man was assessed for minor injuries, but not taken to hospital. The incident sparked the ire of Walhalla Mountain Rivers Tourism Association president Russell Wright, who said the cyclist should have been heeding COVID-19 restrictions and stayed at home. “The question should be asked what was this guy doing out bike riding when he should’ve been at home? This is not essential travel, Mr Wright said. “We have been actively asking people

not to come to town, please stay at home. Walhalla is essentially closed. Nothing is open apart from the mail run three days a week for locals. Mr Wright said all public facilities including campgrounds, toilets and day shelters had been closed off. He said he was disappointed there were still “dribs and drabs of visitors coming into the heritage tourist town, putting locals’ health at risk. Mr Wright said one local had even stuck up some signs coming into town saying “Walhalla is closed. “It’s sad that it’s come to this as people should be listening to the government’s advice. People should not have to put up signs to keep people out, he said. “We’ve even had people knocking on

doors asking for accommodation or good fishing spots, but they are not meant to be here. We don’t want your germs and this is putting it politely. Mr Wright urged visitors to return to Walhalla once the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. In the meantime, Mr Wright encouraged prospective visitors to take a gander at the town’s autumn colours on virtual walks posted to the Walhalla Facebook page. “This is having a massive impact on our small owner operated businesses, they rely on tourism as there is no other industry here, he said. “We will love to have you back when this is over, we will need you to come back.

Falling down: One of the boilers at Energy Brix is being collapsed as part of demolition works.

photograph supplied

Boiler comes down By MICHELLE SLATER

THE first boiler was collapsed at the old Morwell Power Station late last month as demolition continues on-site with all known friable asbestos safely removed. Energy Brix Australia Corporation remediation manager Barry Dungey said more than 5200 square metres of asbestos was removed “with no incident. “It’s all been very good, we’ve done 12 months of asbestos removal and there was no positive readings, this was an excellent result, Mr Dungey said. “We had monitoring within 50 metres of the boiler collapse and also around the boundary, in some cases a kilometre away and we picked up no fibres in the monitoring. Mr Dungey said the asbestos removal was completed in January, but there could still be some contained material in

boiler gaskets wedged between steel, which would be cut out encased in the steel. “We still don’t know how much asbestos is inside the boiler, in the 50s it was a standard product. We went through all the original drawings and we will go through the fallen boiler to verify there is no other asbestos, Mr Dungey said. “We will treat it as an asbestos zone until we complete this. Mr Dungey said he understood community concerns surrounding asbestos removal, as this was the first major asbestos removal project in the Latrobe Valley. He said the asbestos was sealed into large plastic bags and put into secure 44 gallon drums to be transported to a licensed asbestos station near Sunbury. Mr Dungey said there was “significant preparation carriedout before the first of the eight boilers was brought down, with the others to be collapsed every fortnight until the end of June.

The boiler collapse was not publicly advertised as no part of the work could be seen from public vantage points. Mr Dungey said preparation included bracing and strengthening the boiler house and cutting out structures to free up the boiler for collapse so it would not hit anything. “This, combined with a large number of mist machines during the collapse, meant that everything possible had been done to minimise dust during the collapse, Mr Dungey said. He said once all the boilers were brought down, they would collapse the boiler house with the remaining two chimneys to be brought down in September. Mr Dungey said Gippsland Infrastructure was in the process of purchasing the site. “We are hopeful we can see some new businesses established on the site, this will be great for the Latrobe Valley, he said.

$1.3 billion boost to health

THOUSANDS of extra intensive care beds will be established throughout Victoria as the state government spends another $1.3 billion to help the health system cope with an expected surge in sick coronavirus patients. Premier Daniel Andrews made the announcement yesterday as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Victoria hit 968 - an increase of 51 from the previous day. There are 31 people in hospital, including six in intensive care. There are currently about 450 intensive care beds in Victoria. The new package is set to create about 4000 more to help hospitals cope with any rise in infected people.

Close to $1.2 billion will go towards equipment and resources, while $65 million will be spent on capital works and workforce training. The money will also pay for more protective equipment, including 551 million gloves, 100 million masks and 14.5 million gowns. Between the cracks: Kiwi man Jason Clough is not able to claim any government support after he lost his hospitality job in Moe due to COVID-19 restrictions. photograph michelle slater

Moe resident now finds himself in no man’s land By MICHELLE SLATER

A NEW Zealand man living in Moe fears he is being left penniless after he was terminated from his hospitality job and does not fit the criteria for any federal government assistance. Jason Clough moved to Moe about seven weeks ago to take up a new job in hospitality, but was let go more than a week ago when COVID-19 regulations came into place. Mr Clough is calling on the federal government to help Kiwis living here in limbo due to coronavirus. The former Rotorua local moved to Australia to be with his family three years ago and is here on a special category subclass 444 visa, which allows New Zealand citizens to work and study in Australia. He fears he has fallen between the cracks for any assistance available from either the Australian or New Zealand governments - including the JobKeeper package which is available to Kiwis in 444 visas. Mr Clough fears he cannot access this support as he is unemployed with no job to return to, but stressed he was still actively looking for work. He told The Express that it was “not possible to move back to New Zealand as he would return to no job or any family and he

‘‘

It’s been incredibly difficult and it’s come down to the point where I’m borrowing money to keep me going, I’ve reached out to support services but they said I don’t meet the criteria. JASON CLOUGH had invested his life in Australia. Mr Clough had even brought his dog over from New Zealand and just signed a 12-month lease on a property in Moe. “It’s been incredibly difficult and it’s come down to the point where I’m borrowing money to keep me going, I’ve reached out to support services, but they said I don’t meet the criteria, Mr Clough said. “What’s the alternative, we become homeless and potentially

become a COVID-19 statistic. Because that’s the reality if there aren’t some sensible changes made to legislation, even just temporary. Mr Clough had contacted a swag of state and federal Members of Parliament, including Social Services Minister Anne Ruston, calling for help for his fellow Kiwis in his situation. A spokeswoman for Senator Ruston said New Zealanders living in Australia on a 444 visa could access a range of payments “depending on their circumstances. The spokeswoman also said there were no restrictions on foreigners departing Australia and encouraged people to contact their consulate for advice on arrangements to return home. “Those who came to Australia before February 2001 generally have protected status and have the same access to Australian payments as permanent residents and Australian citizens including the Coronavirus supplement and waiting period waivers, she said. “If you arrived in Australia after February 2001 and have been in Australia for at least 10 years, SCV holders can access JobSeeker payment or Youth Allowance (jobseeker) for a oneoff period of up to six months.

MP: New subsidy will protect region’s jobs

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S $130 BILLION PLAN

Businesses will be eligible to receive the subsidy if they: ■ Have a turnover of less than $1 billion and their turnover will be reduced by more than 30 per cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month); ■ Have a turnover of $1 billion or more and their turnover will be reduced by more than 50 per cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month); and ■ Are not subject to the major bank levy. Not-for-profit entities, including charities, and self-employed individuals that meet the turnover tests that apply for businesses are also eligible to apply for JobKeeper payments. For more information, including about the application process and the criteria for

eligible employees, visit https://treasury.gov.au/ coronavirus. The federal government also announced it would temporarily expand access to income support payments over the next six months and establish a Coronavirus Supplement of $550 per fortnight. JobSeeker payment is subject to a partner income test. This income test has been temporarily relaxed to ensure an eligible person can receive the JobSeeker Payment, and the associated Coronavirus Supplement, provided their partner earns less than $3068 per fortnight, or around $79,762 a year. The personal income test for individuals on the JobSeeker Payment will still apply. For more details, visit www.australia.gov.au.

DARREN CHESTER

MEMBER for Gippsland Darren Chester has welcomed a $130 billion federal government plan to protect the jobs of thousands of workers across the region impacted by the coronavirus. Mr Chester said the ‘JobKeeper’ announcement was designed to keep as many people in work as possible and help businesses to resume operations quickly once restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic were lifted. “The JobKeeper wage subsidy will provide eligible employees with a flat payment of $1500 per fortnight through their employer, before tax, for the next six months to help retain staff members,” Mr Chester said. “This new subsidy is for businesses significantly affected

No new coronavirus cases in the Valley By GREGOR MACTAGGART

MAACG Medical would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the commitment the Doctors, Nursing Staff and Receptionist have to their community.

If you can stay home, stay home: Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton. The Department of Health and Human Services follows up and monitors all close contacts of confirmed cases and provides them with information and support. All close contacts must self-isolate for 14 days. Under restrictions agreed by National Cabinet, gatherings of more than two people are now banned, except for members of your immediate household and for work or education purposes. All people arriving from any international destination must also self-isolate for 14 days as per federal government direction. All travellers returning to Victoria from overseas will be placed in enforced quarantine for the self-isolation period of 14 days. The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services’ has a hotline for public information on COVID-19 which is 1800 675 398.

THERE was no change to the number of coronavirus cases in the Latrobe Valley as of luncthime yesterday. Data released by Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton stated five cases have been identified in this region. One of the cases, who has now been given the all-clear by medical professionals after completing 14 days in self-isolation, is an employee of the Newborough Bowling Club. Manager Alan Grubb said the club, which has been closed since March 17 due to restrictions imposed by the state and federal governments, responded swiftly as soon as the employee’s positive diagnosis was confirmed. “We got on the front foot straight away,” he told The Express. “We sent out a message to all the people on our mailing list letting them know that one of our employees, who last worked on Saturday, March 14, had tested positive to the coronavirus. “With our elderly membership we also said in the message that if anyone felt unwell and required to be tested to inform medical staff you have had possible contact with a confirmed case. “To the best of our knowledge no-one else has got the virus.” Across the state, the total number of COVID-19 cases as of yesterday was 968, including 183 in regional Victoria. Professor Sutton again stressed these were unprecedented times. “Everyone who’s unwell must isolate themselves and everyone who’s been told they’re in quarantine either as a returned traveller or close contact must do so,” Professor Sutton said. “Social distancing will save lives. Everyone needs to comply with restrictions in place to keep yourself, your loved ones and the whole community safe. “Our message is clear: if you can stay home, you must stay home.”

RUSSELL NORTHE Member for Morwell

From a health perspective, it is imperative that we all heed the health advice that is being handed down by the experts because COVID-19 is real, and it is extremely serious. The State Government has recently established a Coronavirus website which contains a variety of health and other information, supports and advice. I encourage people to view this website on a regular basis to receive updates on the situation as it evolves. https://www.vic.gov.au/ coronavirus The reality is people are hurting in a variety of ways at present. Restriction measures have been put in place to minimise the spread of this virus, which has changed dramatically the way we go about our daily lives. Subsequently businesses and their employees have endured substantial pain and our thoughts are with

everyone who has been impacted negatively in this regard. The health and well-being of our community is paramount, but the economic hurt can’t be ignored given so many have invested their lives and livelihoods into their business or enterprise. In this context, State and Federal Governments have announced respective economic packages for employers and assistance initiatives for employees. These include: • Victorian Business Hotline: 13 22 15 • Business Victoria Website: https://www.business.vic.gov.au/ • Employees impacted by the loss of work during this period should contact Centrelink directly or visit the following website: https:// www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/ subjects/affected-coronavirus-covid-19 In the Latrobe Valley we have experienced many significant challenges over previous years, and we have proved to be a resilient bunch through those same battles. This virus is a different beast and it will take time and all our strength to get through as unscathed as possible. This has to be complimented by good decision-making and the provision of adequate supports and assistance by all levels

of Government. I havee been able to raise through the Premier’ss office a number of local issues, questionss and initiatives that have arisen in recent weeks and will continue to do so on behalf of our community. To those working on the frontline we say ou are doing. Whether thank you for what you rgency service workers, it be police and emergency those working in the healthcare sector, aged ucation along with so care, child-care or education mend you for your many others we commend dication at this commitment and dedication difficult time. These extraordinary dinary times call for extraordinary care and generosity for those around us. Call up or check in on family, friends and neighbours to make sure rt local they are okay. Support businesses, where wee can, as they are going to need our support. And justt as er importantly, look after d you during this period of time.

GP1606005

The impacts of Coronavirus are being felt heavily right across the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland region. These are unprecedented, unfamiliar and uncertain times for individuals, families, employees, employers, organisations and communities. There are so many valid concerns, issues and questions that have arisen, which is understandable given the circumstances we are contending with.

Lifeline is hear to help A NEW service has been established in Gippsland to assist people who may be experiencing increased levels of uncertainty and anxiety. In times of personal and community challenges, people may have difficulty coping and experience feelings of being overwhelmed. The CATCH program has been launched to provide a dedicated confidential call and text service to anyone who would like to access the support of a trained

FACTS ABOUT

CORONAVIRUS If you suspect you may have coronavirus disease (COVID-19) call the dedicated HOTLINE - open 24 hours, 7 days on 1800 675 398.

What is Coronavirus

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause respiratory infections. These can range from the common cold to more serious diseases.

Updated guidelines

conditions, such as those returning to Australia from Medical Treatment Overseas Program.

If you feel unwell

• If you are in any of these risk categories and begin to feel unwell and develop a fever or shortness of breath, a cough or respiratory illness either during your period of isolation (self-quarantine), or in the 14 days since arriving home from international travel, you should seek immediate medical attention. • Call ahead to your GP or emergency department and mention your overseas travel before you arrive at the doctor’s office so they can prepare appropriate infection control measures. • If you have serious symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, call 000 and ask for an ambulance and tell the operator your recent travel history.

• Gatherings of more than two people in public are now banned except for members of your immediate household and for work or education purposes • People aged over 70 or 60-plus with chronic illness are discouraged from leaving their homes unless essential for medical care. • Still open: Supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, public transport, some schools, hairdressers, petrol stations, postal and freight services, bottle shops, newsagents, retail shops. Restaurants restricted to take-away/ delivery in most states. • Funerals are limited to no more than 10 people, but states can provide exemptions; weddings restricted to the couple, celebrant and two witnesses. • All elective surgery in public facilities put on hold. • All patients will be able to access Medicare-funded online consultations from next week. • Testing extended to include anyone with a fever or acute respiratory infection who works in health care or aged care, lives in areas with an elevated risk of community transmission, or where there are two or more plausibly linked cases.

Anyone wishing to visit a resident of an Aged Care Facility should contact the facility first to receive advise on their current arrangements.

Had close contact with a confirmed case

What to do if asked to self-isolate

• If you have been in close contact with someone who has coronavirus disease (COVID-19) stay at home (self-quarantine).

Ban on Australians travelling overseas

This will help avoid travellers returning to Australia with coronavirus and the risks of spreading coronavirus to other countries. Exemptions will be managed by the Australian Border Force.

International travel

All people arriving from any international destination must also self isolate for 14 days as per Commonwealth Government direction. All travellers returning from overseas to Victoria will be placed in enforced quarantine for the self isolatiion period of 14 days.

Quarantine arrangements for vulnerable travellers

National Cabinet agreed that state and territory governments can consider exceptional circumstance exemptions to the requirement to serve the mandatory 14 day self isolation in a hotel or other facility, so as to enable vulnerable or at-risk individuals to self isolate (for 14 days) at home - including for minors or those with medical

Elderly or have pre-existing medical conditions

Many people will suffer only mild symptoms, however, early indications are that the elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart and lung disease are more at risk of experiencing severe symptoms. Read the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) factsheet for people aged over 65 years for more information.

Residential Aged Care Facilities

A document has been developed to support Australians who have been asked to self-isolate due to COVID-19. If you are concerned please call the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398. Home Isolation Guidance - Australian Federal Government

How the infection is spread

COVID-19 spreads through close contact with an infected person; mostly face-to-face or within a household. It cannot jump across a room or be carried for long distances in the air so we should all go about our lives as normal. Close contact means greater than 15 minutes face-to-face or the sharing of a closed space for more than two hours with a confirmed case. A close contact could include any person meeting any of the following criteria: • living in the same household or household-like setting (for example, a boarding school or hostel) • direct contact with the body fluids or laboratory specimens of a confirmed case • a person who spent two hours or longer in the same room • face-to-face contact for more than 15 minutes with the case in any other setting not listed above.

Symptoms of coronavirus

Many people who contract COVID–19 will suffer only mild symptoms. However early indications are that the elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions are more at risk of experiencing severe symptoms. The most common symptoms reported include: • Fever • Breathing difficulties such as breathlessness • Cough • Sore throat • Fatigue or tiredness. For further information on the coronavirus go to: www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus or www.health.gov.au

Ten ways to reduce your risk of Coronavirus 1.

Stay Home if you can stay home, you must stay home.

2.

Wash hands often with soap and running water, for at least 20 seconds. Dry with paper towel or hand dryer. 3. Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth. 4. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow. 5. Isolate yourself at home if you feel sick. If you take medication ensure you have adequate supplies. 6. Phone your GP first if you need medical attention. They will tell you what to do. 7. Continue healthy habits: exercise, drink water, get plenty of sleep, and now is the time to quit smoking. Call the Quitline 137 848. 8. Don’t wear a face mask if you are well. 9. Buy an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with over 60 per cent alcohol. 10. Keep a distance of 4 metres square between you and other people whenever possible.

A FUNERAL will be held today for Richard Neville-Smith. Mr Neville-Smith, who died at the age of 82 in hospital in Melbourne on March 24, formerly owned the Heyfield timber mill. “My father has left an amazing legacy, son James Neville-Smith told the ABC. “His father’s father started the business in 1924. He was a terrific community person, very caring and very generous, he really loved the forest industry and he really loved the relationship, as a family, we had with Gippsland for so long. Due to coronavirus restrictions, only members of the Neville-Smith family will attend the service, with a memorial and wake held later this year.

MIRBOO North and district residents will receive the snapshot of their local community with a new Vital Signs report that is being delivered to local households. The Mirboo North and District’s Vital Signs Report contains local data covering the district’s health and wellbeing, economy, education, environment and community belonging. It also features a special Village of 100 section, breaking down local demographics and issues on a simple scale. Vital Signs was first developed in Canada and is the first of its kind to be produced in rural Australia, backed by the Mirboo North and

District Community Foundation and Mirboo North and District Community Bank. The easy-to-read snapshot was put together with input from community representatives from Yinnar, Boolarra, Mirboo North and Thorpdale. Mirboo North and District Community Foundation executive officer Ruth Rogan said they also held community forums in each township to gather local feedback. “The communities in our small district are located in three different shires, so they do identify with different sets of data and local experiences, Ms Rogan said. “Therefore we have actually created

four separate reports tailored to Mirboo North,Thorpdale,Yinnar and Boolarra, so each area will receive their very own report. Ms Rogan said she hoped it would open up discussions on how and where to make changes in the community. “We do hope that local people will identify what issues are important to them, and acknowledge what surprised them about the report, she said. “We encourage them to reach out and engage with us so they can participate in future discussion and action in their community. Mirboo North and District Community Bank executive officer

Anne Marie Dieperink said the report would help decide where to roll out community grant programs. “As a granting organisation, having this information at our fingertips ensures that our community continues to be a great place to live, now and into the future, Ms Dieperink said. “By having this information on hand, we can begin to have real grass-roots conversations around how we can overcome obstacles and celebrate opportunities together. This is just the beginning. The Mirboo North and District’s Vital Signs Report can also be picked up from local post offices and public buildings in each locality.

Providing services and staying safe GIPPSLAND Water said it will continue to provide essential water and wastewater services and its priority was keeping employees and community safe. Managing director Sarah Cumming said while community members may see Gippsland Water employees out and about, additional precautionary measures had been put in place.

“As an essential service provider, it’s important that we continue with our work, Ms Cumming said. “Customers may see our employees and contractors on the street carrying out repairs or upgrades to water and wastewater services. “We may need to enter customers’ properties to access assets such as the manhole or water meter to

complete inspections or repairs so that we can restore essential water and wastewater services. “We assure you that we’re following all recommended hygiene and social distancing practices - and we ask our customers to do the same. Ms Cumming added Gippsland Water employees were following all recommendations issued by the

Activity still the key for every dog owner

RSPCA Victoria is encouraging dog owners to keep their beloved pooches stimulated during this time of lockdowns and uncertainty. Self isolation and quarantine provide challenges for regular exercise regimes however there are creative ways to ensure your dog is exercised and happy within these constraints. “Our relationship with dogs will become even more important as we deal with the coronavirus and the long-lasting implications it may have for Australians. During this period of isolation, pets can provide an antidote to

Page 16 — The Latrobe Valley Express, Thursday, 2 April, 2020

loneliness and provide important and comforting companionship for many people, RSPCA Victoria chief executive Dr Liz Walker said. “If you are in quarantine or self isolation, I recommend providing enrichment and exercising your dog from the comfort of your own home by playing games that keep their minds and body stimulated. These include hide and seek using food or toys, agility courses using furniture or scent work. Scent work involves dogs using their noses to sniff out treats which releases dopamine and keeps them physically

moving. You could even use this to replace normal feeding times. The psychological and physical health benefits of caring for pets has been well documented. Research has shown that pet owners have higher self-esteem, less depression and more resilience to cope with grief and stress. Additionally, pet owners have increased cardiovascular health. “Pets are excellent caregivers who keep us company when we’re sick or feeling low. They bring joy and happiness and can make us feel safe while we’re home alone, Dr Walker said.

state and federal governments, particularly around social distancing. “We’re washing our hands regularly, disinfecting surfaces and maintaining a distance of at least 1.5 metres from others. “We’re well prepared and we’ll continue to supply safe drinking water and wastewater services to homes and businesses.

How Locals Can Help Locals! Dear Readers, These are challenging times for our local community, as they are for all local communities around the world. Many of us are anxious, and unsure about many things, but one thing we know for certain is that we need to work together as a community to overcome the challenges this global pandemic has created. ISOLATE AND AVOID INFECTION The Coronavirus is first and foremost a health crisis, and keeping our community safe and healthy is the number one priority. Please follow the government protocols and do all you can to avoid infection.

STAY INFORMED

For over 50 years, the Latrobe Valley Express has been the trusted source of local news, and we take our responsibility to inform the local community very seriously. For the latest government advice regarding COVID-19, see www.health.gov.au, and please beware that ‘news’ on social media is not regulated and many false and dangerous theories are being shared online.

PLEASE BUY LOCAL This health crisis has caused an economic crisis, and we need to do all we can as a community to save local jobs, and livelihoods in the long term. The best thing we can do (in addition to staying well) is buying from local businesses whenever possible. Buying locally has an amazingly positive multiplier effect on the local community because your money keeps being reinvested with other local businesses and employees. This is critical to keeping locals in jobs. A NOTE TO OUR ADVERTISERS We understand these are very tough times for business – as we are also the feeling the impact. We are ready to assist you to change your advertising copy to keep the local community updated about any changes to your business operations, safety protocols, new service delivery models, messages of thanks/ support or other important news. We are also in the process of developing programs for our loyal advertisers to assist through these tough times, and we look forward to working together to see this through. Our readership is up, as people seek trusted news in a crisis.

THANKS TO OUR READERS We can’t thank you enough for your loyal support over the past 50 years, and we look forward to keeping you informed in the decades to come. Our journalists are doing an outstanding job, in very tough conditions. Private view on schools now public

EACH week I read in The Express about school activities in the region. I note that the private (i.e. “religious) schools receive consistently more publicity than state schools, even though there are many more state schools and state school students among your readership. As an example, in the issue of Thursday, March 26, there are seven articles spread over four pages, six of them concerning private schools, and only one about a state school. The stories involved St Mary’s Primary and St Michael’s Primary (p.20); St Kieran’s Primary (p.21); Morwell Central Primary (p.22); and two articles about St Paul’s (one each from the Senior and Junior schools) and one about St Joseph’s Primary, Trafalgar (p.23). I realise that private schools, which depend on attracting students for their income, probably have a designated person who sends in articles to the newspapers regularly, but a few phone calls from your journalists would surely elicit

fresh pork and other meats to choose from to create healthy, family-friendly meals. Pork producers are proud to be part of Australian agriculture and now is as good a time as any for all Australians to share in the pride of what our country’s farmers, across all commodities, have to offer. Margo Andrae, Australian Pork Limited chief executive Canberra

stories from a more representative sample of schools, all of whom involve their students in a similar range of activities as the private schools. In the same edition, a similar bias might be assumed from the range of schools whose principals were quoted in the p.10 article headlined “Schools react to coronavirus. Michael Haynes, Traralgon

Support for local butchers crucial

SOME very encouraging news amid the COVID-19 pandemic is that butchers remain open for business. In exceptional times like these, our national food supply is a fundamental priority and Australians know that butchers aren’t just an important service, they’re an essential service. When retail support is so critical, there’s no easier way to help a small business than to stop by your local butcher and pick up something for dinner. You’ll be helping a small business operator, their employees

Economy taking a hit

Back local butchers: Australian Pork Limited chief executive Margo Andrae has written a Letter to the Editor encouraging people to support their local butcher during these times of uncertainty. file photograph and their suppliers, including the 35,000 people working in Australia’s $5.3 billion pork industry. Butchers share our industry’s priority to protect the ongoing wellbeing of staff and customers, and to ensure a consistent supply of quality Australian produce. At the farmgate, our producers are doing their bit by

maintaining the supply of high quality, locally grown pork. That continuity is ensuring supply chain jobs are retained and means we’re delivering affordable, fresh pork to retailers right around the country. Even at a time when household budgets might be stretched, there’s a wide range of versatile cuts of

IN the face of COVID-19 and unemployment rising to 11 per cent and upward overnight we need to question our economic system and who it benefits most. If small business cannot sustain even a month of lockdown and people suffer rent and mortgage stress after only a few weeks of unemployment, we need to question the distribution of Australia’s great first world wealth and the system which governs it. We must demand a decent social contract in light of

COVID-19. People matter, not stockmarkets, not ideologies. We need well staffed, well equipped hospitals in every town, we need housing security and financial equity, we need public amenities, social services and peace of mind. Kate Zizys, Churchill

Coronavirus shows our true colours

THE public response to the coronavirus pandemic in this country does not show our society in a favourable light. Irrational panic and the hoarding of food and other products when there is simply no need to do so. Demonstrating that a significant proportion of our population is utterly selfish, bordering on anti social, if not asocial. That we very much live in a “dog eat dog world. Every man and woman for him or herself. Michael J Gamble, Belmont

PUBLIC GATHERINGS RESTRICTED TO TWO PEOPLE Gippsland Celebrant Services: Weddings remain at 5, funerals remain at 10. It’s a tough time for all but politics aside these measures are in place for all our sakes. If people followed the advice and didn’t attend mass gatherings at beach and other places then maybe we wouldn’t have these extra restrictions. A lot of people and businesses are hurting. Let’s just get through this together. Ken Kerslake: But can I go to work? Trent Williams: Yes.You can go to work. Ken Kerslake: Ok, good. TRARALGON ACCIDENT ON CORNER OF CHURCH AND GREY STREETS Monica Calabrese MacGregor: Worst

It must of happened about two minutes after I had just driven around the same roundabout. Ashlee Kemp: Third accident in the CBD in three days. What the hell! Joslyn Edebohls: Stay safe. Lisa Atlee: Hope everyone is OK. MP’S FRUSTRATION OVER ‘INACTION’ AT TRARALGON INTERSECTION Ash Heyfron: Seriously think there’s far greater things to be worrying about right now ... the roads are going to get very quiet soon enough anyway. Plus anyone who suggests the bypass I cannot see that happening for a very long time with the amount of debt the coronavirus is causing and the last thing we would want to do after all this is have the Valley go off the radar completely after what is going to be one of the hardest times to ever hit the region. Geoff Stolk: The solution to all of Traralgon’s highway traffic problems has been planned,

discussed, and generally stuffed around with for about 30 years. Get on with building it and stop wasting money on all these band aid solutions. Anne Foster: This intersection is fine, just need patience to wait till it’s safe to turn, something which is sadly lacking in today’s society. Shirley Van Heurck: What about Kosciusko Street in a morning before school, we received a letter years ago saying the intersection would be made safe!! Nothing has happened, it is a hazard turning right into the highway. Cindy Shanahan: Would a bypass help ease this situation? Christine Lake: People are always in a hurry at this intersection ... give way is a big problem with road users here. HAIRDRESSER TIME LIMIT GIVEN THE CHOP Amanda Kellett: Close everything other than essential services. Lockdown has to happen. We should have learnt from the places who have been through this already. The faster we go into total lockdown the quicker we can control this and come out the other end.

Siddle’s interstate interest

Smith is on a magical run

CRICKET

GREYHOUNDS

MORWELL export Peter Siddle looks poised for a surprise move interstate. The Age reported Siddle has told Cricket Victoria he has fielded interest from Tasmania and Western Australia. The paceman, who retired in December after playing 67 Tests, is ‘up for grabs’ as he is no longer on Cricket Australia’s contract list. Siddle, 35, is understood to have not shut the door on talks from Victoria, but has indicated his willingness to talk to both the Tigers and Warriors. The Latrobe Cricket Club product finished fifth in the Sheffield Shield player of the year award after taking 32 wickets at 19.87 for the summer. He was the leading wickettaker for the Bushrangers and his season highlighted by a haul of 5/49 against NSW at the SCG in February. Tasmania has a long and successful track record of luring interstate bowlers to the Apple Isle. The list includes the likes of Jackson Bird, Nathan Ellis, Mark Ridgway, Gerard Denton, Greg Rowell, Chris Matthews and Damian Wright.

THE good times keep rolling for Nambrok trainer Lyn Smith. Smith’s charge Earn The Magic produced a tough performance to win the WWR Sawdust Grade 6/7 Final (400m) at Warragul on Tuesday night. The classy son of Barcia Bale took his impeccable record to four wins from as many starts when he denied odds-on favourite Paua of Oscar. Earn The Magic won in a time of 22.59 seconds. Rosedale trainer Sharon-Lee Chignell’s excellent week continued when Shantelle Rose landed a boilover victory in the second heat of the GRV Vic Bred Grade 5 Series (450m). Shantelle Rose ($29.40) led from box six and never looked back, powering away to win like an odds-on pop in a solid time of 25.85 seconds. The success came less than 72 hours after Chignell won a feature maiden final at Sale on Sunday with William Rose, the full-brother of Shantelle Rose. Gippsland racing action is at Sale today (Tier 3), then Warragul tomorrow and Sale on Sunday.

Busy time for Moe trainer HORSE RACING

MOE trainer Peter Gelagotis is set for a busy few days. Gelagotis launches a two-pronged assault on today’s Geelong meeting with key contenders Pegazeus and Grey Khan. Pegazeus, a four-year-old son of Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente, will look to make it two wins on the trot when he tackles the Roderick Insurance Brokers Benchmark 58 Handicap (1750m). The emerging type broke his maiden status in good style at Cranbourne over 1500m on March 17. Jockey Daniel Stackhouse retains the ride on Pegazeus and will also be in the saddle aboard Grey Khan. Grey Khan, a four-year-old son of Dalakhani, is entered for a 1750m Benchmark 64 Handicap. The flashy gelding has not quite fired on all cylinders in his two runs this preparation, running ninth at Bendigo and fifth at Pakenham at shorter distances. Having won his lone race in 15 starts at this track and trip, Grey Khan does look one of the leading hopes on paper. Gelagotis has nominated Precious Armour for a maiden at Cranbourne on Friday night, but he also holds an entry for a race at Werribee on Saturday. The three-year-old filly by Helmet is yet to make her debut. Last-start Mornington winner Nudge Bar is entered in a 2000m Benchmark 90 event at Caulfield on Saturday. It looms as the first try at the 10 furlongs for the son of Bullbars, who has won four races.

Suspension of play tipped to continue

SOCCER

FOOTBALL Victoria has announced plans to scale back its operations with the aim of securing the financial viability of the organisation and its member clubs through the evolving COVID-19 health crisis. It follows the recent suspension of football activity across Australia until at least April 14. Effective immediately, the state football’s governing body will invoke an average 40 per cent pay reduction across its five-member executive team. In addition, it will stand down more than half of its workforce for a period of one month starting yesterday, with affected staff to have access to annual leave and long service leave entitlements for the duration of the shutdown. Football Victoria anticipates that Stage 3 government restrictions

‘‘

It’s gut-wrenching for everyone involved in the game, and I’m acutely aware of the impact that stand downs will have on the lives of our people. PETER FILOPOULOS

are likely to restrict non-essential services, including football activity, including the Latrobe Valley Soccer League’s competitions and Gippsland FC’s participation in the National Premier Leagues, beyond the suspension period initially imposed by the sport. This is currently being considered by FFA and Member Federations with the view of extending the suspension of football activity beyond the current suspension period. Football Victoria chief executive Peter Filopoulos described the situation facing the game as one of the most difficult in its long history in Australia. “These are extraordinary times, which call for extraordinary action to ensure the financial viability and long-term sustainability of our game across Victoria. It’s gut-wrenching for everyone involved in the game, and I’m acutely aware of the impact that

stand downs will have on the lives of our people,” he said. “However, it’s vital that the organisation is fit-for-purpose during this period, and remains agile and responsive so that we’re in a position to get through the significant challenges facing us right now and be able to resume football activities down the track.” Mr Filopoulos said Football Victoria was working closely with FFA, Member Federations, and government agencies as it seeks the best advice on a path forward. He said the governing body was also engaging with the federal and state government in relation to financial support during this difficult period. The LVSL said on its Facebook page that it would provide an update on our competitions post April 14 once they had further information.
