JOE JACKSON

THE MAN IN THE MIRROR

FATHER OF THE FIRST ROYAL FAMILY OF MUSIC

BY TRISH GERAN

www .LVH media . com

T

he last time I sat down to interview Joe Jackson was in July 2003. He was a little nervous with just a hint of excitement about the birthday party to be held in Neverland Ranch the home of his son Michael Jackson hosted at that time by Las Vegas Hollywood Magazine and Reflexivity Capital Group in his honor. The party would take place in two weeks and what was supposed to be a guest list of 500 somehow turned into 2,240 with about 265 Celebrities and Dignitaries many of the family’s associates invited themselves to Celebrate Joe Jackson’s Birthday party and to show support for Michael and the Jackson Family. Michael surrounded himself with people he “heavily” relied on, lawyers, and adoring fans. But the shoulders he always leaned on, were those that belonged to the man who instructed him, helped him through his young years to become the King of Pop and the creator of the Jackson Five and Father for the First Royal Family of music the man he grew to respect later in life, the father he called, Joseph. During Michael’s trials period, Joe planted himself by Michael’s side. The moment he entered and exited the courts he was there, a true protector. The first week of the trial, Joe found out that the record stores in Europe pulled Michael’s music off the shelves. He made sure this bitter news never got back to Michael “because it would have killed him”, Joe said. On June 13, 2005, Michael was acquitted on all counts. For the man who created America’s most successful family in the music industry, why are there so many misconceptions and so little credit given? Who is Joseph “Joe” Jackson? “Is he the man in the movie or the man in the courtroom?” I decided to begin our discussion with some of the events that caused his matriarch image to slowly dissolve. Q: In the 1992 movie, The Jacksons: An American Dream, you are portrayed as a father who was strict and overly abusive to your kids. Who was in charge of the script and why would the family approve of it knowing there would be damaging repercussions? A: Jermaine was supposed to handle the script for the family. I think he left it in the hands of someone else and didn’t watch the story lines close enough. That’s funny how I was the bad guy in the movie. I worked two jobs so I didn’t have time to do much. Katherine gave some spankings and you would too if you had to raise nine kids. I love my family and I did my best to support and protect them and to make sure they stayed out of the streets. Q: The executive producer of the movie was Suzanne de Passe. The word in the industry was that she couldn’t produce her way out of a paper bag. Is that true and how did she manage to stay in the business that long if that was remotely true? A: You said that I didn’t. I have no idea. She is a nice lady. I did request that she be removed off our tour. I didn’t like some of the things that were going down and that is as far as I can go with that one. Q: What about your relationship with Berry Gordy. Is

Q: Coming from you – yes it makes a lot of sense. When the Jackson Five’s contract with Motown expired, you suggested they leave Berry and sign with Epic records because they offered more creative freedom. Was the package that much more lucrative that it was worth jeopardizing your future with Mr. Gordy? A: Yes that is correct. If Motown would have matched the offer we would have stayed with the label. Once we signed with Epic, we never looked back. I thought about our future, our ability to grow and more impor-

it strained or in the past? Did you leave Motown for Epic because you were jealous of Michael and Berry’s close bond? A: I have no beef with Berry. Look he did something nobody in that period thought could be done; he brought black music into millions of white homes. I give him that credit. We talk when we see each other. We’re not friends but we aren’t enemies either. Does that make sense?

12

tant, to keep the group together. It wasn’t a question of whether we liked Motown or Berry it was a business decision regardless of how the media twisted it. The media is about divide and conquer, always remember that. Q: The original name of the group was the Jackson Brothers. Who renamed the group? A: A lady back in Gary, Indiana named, Evelynn Layhee. She said she thought Five should replace brothers.

Q: How did you know your kids had talent? A: I feel that every kid has talent. It’s just a matter of pulling it out of them. Q: When did you know you and the “Five” were on your way to the top? A: When we won the Apollo Theater contest. I was getting them ready by entering as many talent shows as possible so when we got to New York we were ready. It’s an old saying that if you can make it at the Apollo, you can make it anywhere. That is true. Q: When did you feel you reached the highest in your journey of success? A: When I chartered a plane and took the entire family to England. We visited Liverpool and hung out with the Beatles. And the time we brought Lionel Ritchie and the Commodores on board to be our opening act. Another high moment was when we sold out at the MGM hotel in Las Vegas. Vegas is another ‘if you can make it there’ cities. It was then I started to look at the entire picture and say to myself wow look what I’ve done. Q: You were responsible for planning the Victory tour back in 1984. How did Michael respond when you first broke the news to him? It has been stated that he did not want to do it.

www .LVH media . com

13

A: He was okay with it. How come he didn’t want to do it. He didn’t tell me that. He went on tour with his brothers like old times. The only problems I had were with lawyers and accountants. It was a big headache. Q: The tour reportedly grossed a record $175 million. Was it true that the promoters were just out for the money requesting that people buy blocks of four with US Post Office money orders. A: We had to be sure we had the money to cover the costs. Michael donated all of his proceeds, approximately $5 million, to charities. Q: Was that because he didn’t want to be ridiculed as being a performer who demanded money orders from his fans? A: Probably. That sounds like him. He was very sensitive when it came to his fans. I was very sensitive

14

when it came to handing money because I knew that one false move and I would be ousted. Q: Weeks before the tour kicked off, while filming a commercial, Michael’s hair caught on fire. Did he still want to go on tour after his tragic accident? A: Michael was reluctant but still was looking forward to being with his brothers. Q: He burned a great deal of his hair and was in great pain. Did he ever blame you for the start of what some feel was his drug addiction? A: No way. He never mentioned any remorse to me. He was a great performer not a complainer. I guess that is why I had a hard time knowing if he was doing okay or masking his concerns. That we have in common. I did, however, start to see a change in him around that time.

www .LVH media . com

Q: In what way? A: He was a little distant, his behavior slowed down a little. He wasn’t the hyper kid anymore. Q: Back then, you decided to take a chance and contract with a new promoter who later became famous as a boxing promoter named, Don King.

promoters. I wanted to give Don a chance because I didn’t think Blacks ever got a break in that field. The other guy I brought along to assist in the promotions of the Jackson Five tours was former New England Patriots’ owner, "Billy" Sullivan. Q: I remember when we last talked in 2003 you hired about 10 actors, dressed them up like mobsters and attended a meeting with your accountants. This was a scare tactic used to stop Jewish record execs from stealing from your family. I believe your accountant said there was approximately $1 million missing.

A: I always had problems with

A: I said that then and now I am going to say that you are saying it, not me.

A: I didn’t say a name you did. Q: Okay I will assume the promoters were AEG.

Q: For Michael’s last tour, This Is It, you wanted the promoters AEG to pay him in Euros not in American currency.

A: I did some checking and found that Michael would get a lot more if they paid him in Euros. The

www .LVH media . com

15

Euro has always been more valuable than the US currency. I think they didn’t want to do that because they were going to take the cherry off the money and pocket it. Also, the merchandising was not discussed. Another move was to take control of all of those sales without Michael’s knowledge but then again he didn’t want to get involved with

the globe on Wednesday October 28th. It was reported that Sony paid $60 million to use the rights of the film, a decision that was made by the Jackson Estate and concert promoter AEG. That is a large chunk of cash. Have you seen the film? A: No. Nobody showed me a chunk of nothing.

ONE THING THAT HE SAID SEVERAL TIMES WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE TOUR WAS HOW MUCH MORE VALUABLE HE WOULD BE DEAD all of the talks required to put the vending contracts together. Q: At the press conference, Michael announced he was going on tour for 10 concerts. Where did the 50 show commitment come from? A: I have no idea. Michael told me 10 he never mentioned 50. He wanted to do the 10. He wanted his kids to travel with him so they could get a chance to see their father perform. One thing that he said several times when we were talking about the tour was how much more valuable he would be dead. Those words swirled in my head everyday. I kept wondering were in the world was that coming from? Q: The This Is It documentary will be aired across

16

Remember the executors of his estate are two lawyers who Michael let go a while ago. They are making the decisions for the family. We haven’t been asked which is why Katherine is trying to serve on the board. Don’t think that it’s a coincidence that the Beatles album is being released this month, a little time after Michael’s death. A decision made by the executors; more money for them. Q: The Jackson Estate owns 50 percent of the Beatles catalogue. John G. Branca, an entertainment lawyer who helped Jackson buy the catalogue, is an executor of the estate. The catalogue is said to be worth $500 million. Michael bought it back in 1985 for $47.5m after advice from Beatles legend Sir. Paul McCartney. A: I never understood how a lawyer could get tied

up in the deal that he is trying to broker for you. That never made sense to me. Q: There was a pattern of Michael letting people go and then rehiring them. A: That he did not get from me. He was very trusting and I absolutely do not trust anybody. Q: Since we are on that subject. How do you think

18

the stain on your image started? Wasn’t the damaging information taken directly from Michael’s interviews? He even said with fright that he was afraid of you. A: The media started this controversy. Michael responded like a kid who was disciplined and the media stretched it way out of proportion to a point that I didn’t even know who they were talking about. Again, there is that divide and conquer.

www .LVH media . com

Q: Are you saying that the accusations against you by the family were not damaging, that the media took a little mole and made it into a mountain sort of thing? A: Yes. During the times when this was taking place, a few decades ago, I was close with the family not estranged. We either spoke on the phone or spent time at our homes in Las Vegas or Encino. Q: How do you think the investigation of the cause of Michael’s death is going? A: It’s going. There are about 15 lawyers on this case and they are after a lot of everybody not just doctors. Q: Speaking of doctors. Dr. Charles Murray? A: Why did he run? I can’t understand why a doctor would leave his patient during an emergency. What kind of doctor was he? Q: In our last interview, you stated that the number one advice you would give to someone just starting

would have done that before retaining Murray. A: I feel it is crucial to do this, number one. Michael was caught up and he trusted too many people first of all. I can say “if I could of would of” as well. I have one regret. I wish I would have driven through the gates of his home in Las Vegas when the guards wouldn’t let me see him. I would have run over them if they got in the way. This happened a few weeks before he died. I had a knot in my stomach that something was terribly wrong. I needed to see him. He was looking bad. I even told Katherine to go and see about her boy because I didn’t think he was going to be with us long. Q: What was her response? A: She said to stay out of grown folks business. Now and then I look over and I see her crying. I know she wished she would have taken a chance to talk to him when I alerted her. Q: Michael’s financial problems were getting really out of control. Were you worried about what you were hearing and the fact he lost Neverland Ranch? A: Michael didn’t know the value of money. I was never worried about how he was handling his money, I was, however, very worried about his health. Michael would blow money like it was nothing. That was him. Q: And the media are you at peace with what they are covering lately on Michael’s case? A: When Michael died they were reporting things that was not even remotely true. They said he had needle marks all over his arms. I called Prince and asked did he see his father with his shirt off? He said plenty of times. I asked how many needle marks did he see on his arms? He said, “Two, one on each arm.” And

I WISH I WOULD HAVE DRIVEN THROUGH THE GATES... ...RUN OVER THEM IF THEY GOT IN THE WAY out in the music industry would be to check the person of interest’s background. Just think if Michael

they were more like “plug-ins” because Michael was afraid of needles. He hated taking shots. My son

was the biggest entertainer in show biz history. He holds records for giving to charities. That is what the media should have been reporting. Q: What would you like to do in his memory? A: I would like to preserve the Jackson’s legacy. I am proud to see how his fans embraced his memory. Heck they were the ones who called me to say Michael was on his way to the hospital and they were going to follow the ambulance to the hospital. I would feel better when justice prevails then we can all rest. Q: Michael was in the process of buying land to build a home in Las Vegas. Would he be proud to hear the talks about the possibility of Neverland to come to Vegas? A: Yes but only if it is done right. I don’t like the fact that the executors make these decisions without discussing it with any of us. Q: So you are hesitant about this possibility? That’s

20

www .LVH media . com

funny, I could have swore I heard “Headline News” announce that you were all for it. A: That’s the old divide and conquers again. Nobody has asked me anything about the Ranch. When Joe Jackson said he was up to launching his

record label, he was serious. In one week, he traveled to New York, Germany, and Los Angeles, and back to Las Vegas to accept Brenden Celebrity Star Presented by Johnny Brenden the owner of all the Brenden Theaters, for his contribution to the Entertainment Industry and to his remarkable talent he manages. A star will be placed at the walk Of Fame at the Brenden theaters in Las Vegas.

Joe’s list of talents include: songstress and actress, Crystal; Russian pop and R & B singer, actress, and writer, Zika; Latin songstress, Taina; and French rap-

ted. I wish Michael was here to produce the videos. That is what he really wanted to do you know, to produce movies. He would have been re-

THAT IS WHAT HE REALLY WANTED TO DO YOU KNOW, TO PRODUCE MOVIES per, Nicoleo. “Nicoleo’s sound and style reminds me so much of Tupak,” Joe said. “He is extremely talen-

that their love, support and letters have really mattered during these trying and difficult days. I don’t know what we would have done without the constant outpour they gave us. They have been more than I ever would have imagined. I have been well received and I appreciate that. Joe picks up his dark Prada sunglasses and begins to leave his chair.

Q: Any final thoughts Mr. Jackson? Q: Wait I have one more question. A: Yes. I would like to say to the fans

www .LVH media . com

23

He sits down and sighs. A: You said 40 minutes and it’s been a little over an hour. Q: Sit…..one more. A: Okay shoot. Q: I am sure many are wondering where was Diana Ross? She didn’t attend the memorial or the funeral yet she was named the “second” guardian of the children in the estate? Joe slowly places his sunglasses on and begins to walk towards the bathroom. A: Look I have to go pay the water bill.

24

Interesting how the media failed to emphasize the closeness of father and son. Instead, the stories reported were those that fed into Joe’s abusive character which was so cleverly depicted in the 1992 ABC miniseries, The Jacksons: An American Dream. In a 2006 interview with Geraldo Rivera, Michael expressed gratitude and respect for his parents and surprisingly admitted, “In many ways Joseph and I are a lot alike.” In a Special Tribute July 2009 issue, Ebony magazine published, Michael in His Own Words and Notes from Those Who Loved Him. In the first section, Michael stated so eloquently, “My father was a genius when it came to the way he taught us staging, how to work an audience, anticipating what to do next, or never to let the audience know if you are suffering or if something’s wrong. He was amazing like that.”

www .LVH media . com

It was quite clear that Joe is mourning the loss of his son and misses him terribly but because he doesn’t show his pains in the traditional way he is perceived as cold and calculating. The day after Michael left us (June 25, 2009), it was reported Joe was promoting his record label on national te-

about his son in the past tense. I remember he once said, “With all that we’ve been through, the gossip, betrayal and 1,500 lawsuits, we have become so much closer. If all of this had to happen to achieve this closeness so be it. I accept it.”

I SAW A MAN WHO GRASPED FOR WORDS WHILE FORCING HIMSELF TO TALK ABOUT HIS SON IN THE PAST TENSE levision. I asked him about that accusation and he said, “The guy asked me what was I up to and I told him about my record label. That is what I was up to.” During my discussion with Joe, I saw a man who grasped for words while forcing himself to talk

Each time I sit down to talk with Joe one-on-one about receiving national awards, international travel, money, and fame, I still can’t help but conclude that his proudest achievement was his family. He is a man of few words and unbreakable strength and Michael was his biggest fan.

J O E JAC K S O N T H E L E G AC Y C O N T I N U E S In his song History, Michael Jackson chose powerful and poignant words, then laid down a foot tapping beat to create one of his most inspirational songs this world has ever had the pleasure of listening to. This masterpiece was his vision of what matters the most in life and its true meaning. The question is… does it represent his legacy? In other words, do we the people really know what the heart felt message was that Michael wanted to leave behind, or are the images and accusations displayed in the tabloids the major source of your knowledge? I recently sat down with Joe Jackson, the founding father of the Jackson 5, America’s First Family of music, Michael’s Dad. This marks my third interview (2006 & 2009). I was confident that the next time I saw Mr. Jackson I would be able to speak with the both of them, but now it’s just a passing thought. It would have been my gift to the readers to discover how much alike they were and how much Joe helped to set the foundation for Michael. It was Joe who taught Michael how to give to others without them knowing; it was Joe who taught Michael to never hate others; and, it was Joe who Michael called when the load got too heavy. When I walked in his home, he was sitting comfortably on the couch watching an old western movie. There was obviously a shift in his demeanor and atmosphere when I walked in. He was not in a hurry, the cell phone wasn’t ringing and there wasn’t an entourage swarming around him. It was just Joe. Joseph “Joe” Jackson was 84 years old on July 26th this year; he says he would like to take it easy, start to enjoy life a little. I wasn’t taken by his submission because it’s only natural for a shift to occur after a personal tragedy. Joe Jackson is only human.

EVERY DAY CREATE YOUR HISTORY EVERY PATH YOU TAKE YOU'RE LEAVING YOUR LEGACY EVERY SOLDIER DIES IN HIS GLORY

I wanted to know what Joe was doing these days, what his life was like after Michael and what better way to find out than to simply ask. 28

THE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW Q: Joe, how have you been doing since we last talked? It was a month after Michael passed, how has your life changed? A: My life has changed to a certain extent because I am pursuing justice for my son. Michael trusted a lot of people. The people who have been surrounding him for a long time are now in question. Q: Has this tragedy brought your family closer together? A: We’ve always been close regardless of what the media prints or reports. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about Michael. It seems everywhere I go his song would be playing on the airwaves or I could hear his voice. It happened so many times it was starting to get a little scary. I would go in a store and wonder if they programmed the song to come on the second I walked in the door. We are all grieving about Michael and that is as close as any family could possibly get.

Q: Do you think Michael would want you to fight for justice or as he wrote in his song History “Every soldier dies in glory” and simply let the controversy and legal confusion rest? A: Yes absolutely. He knows that a lot of the artists’ representation is getting away with a lot of wrong doings. Today’s artists do not have proper representation and they don’t take the time to learn

the business. Even if they did a lot of them would not understand what they are involved in, at least not right away. Sometimes it takes getting taken for millions to learn your lesson and then more than likely it’s too late. Many artists never reach that high peak again. My advice is to don’t trust nobody and try to learn as much as you can. Michael trusted too many people. Q: You read LaToya’s autobiographical book “Starting Over,” what did you think about her findings and accusations? A: LaToya is dead on the money in her book. She is a lot like me. She won’t give up until justice is served for the sake of her brother’s name. Michael told his Mom, Katherine, “They are going to try to kill me.” LaToya does a great job of indirectly naming people who were corrupt and disloyal to Michael and were long-time staff members of his entourage.

FALSE ACCUSATIONS

found dead in his high rise apartment from a self inflicted gun shot wound was ironic and sad. It was too late. Michael was already gone (June 25, 2009). I raised all of my kids to love everyone, to not hate.

THAT HURT HIM SOMETHING TERRIBLE Q: What do you think broke Michael’s heart the most, disloyalty from his staff or the false accusations of being a child molester? A: False accusations - that hurt him something terrible. When one of the boys (Jordan) admitted that his father (Evan) forced him into confessing that Michael molested him and then five months after Michael’s passing (November 5, 2009) the father was

Michael’s people knew that and they took advantage of him. Q: How did the media handle this surprising discovery? A: They hardly covered it. I don’t really remember seeing it on the news. I found out because somebody told me about it. Q: What is the controversy behind the purchase of the Beatles Catalogue? A: A lot of people thought Paul McCartney should have had first rights. John Lennon did but when he died Michael purchased it by outbidding other potential investors. I know Paul was not pleased about it but eventually he and Michael worked it out. Another example of how the media can twist things. Instead of being patted on the back for making a courageous and smart business move they focused more on Paul McCartney’s feelings of being disrespected. Q: How do you think the media has handled Michael’s legacy? A: It’s been great. However, I wish they would have done these spectacular stories and shows when he was alive. They were too caught up into

portraying him as Jacko. He was never given his just do. Q: How do you feel about Janet’s career? A: I am proud of Janet. I started her career. I sold my half of the house in Southern California to help jump start her career. She is doing great now. Q: How did you like her role in the movie “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf?” A: She was excellent. I always told her that she should do dramatic roles not comedy ones. I knew she had it in her. Q: At the beginning of our interview you mentioned that you are going to start taking it easy? A: I have been busy all of my life. At my age (84) I should be taking it easy. I am kind of glad that I am active instead of being in a wheelchair. I said I was going to start enjoying life a little more. Katherine can’t believe it. She is more laid back - now it’s my turn. I look forward to doing more fishing. Q: On August 2011, the Jackson Family Foundation announced the development of the Jackson Family Center, which will include a Jackson Family Museum, Michael Jackson Performing Arts and

A: I will play very little. I may go down once in a while and then offer advice but that is the extent. I want the fans to feel that they are a part of these projects. They are the ones who have been loyal and respectful of Michael’s legacy, especially when he was alive. Q: The Center is located a few miles from the house where you raised your family? A: Yes it is. We own the house and Katherine stays there when she is in town. The fans donated an eight foot black marble statue with various pictures of Michael on the front. It weighs a ton. They had their names carved on it. There must be about 400 names of fans listed. I hope that the Center helps the surrounding community, which still remains a high unemployment area.

Joe Jackson’s version of slowing down is a little different from the common man. For example, in 2011, he attended the Cannes Film Festival where he launched a (him/her) line of fragrances called, “Legend “ at a private party, which was given on his behalf. His soft drink JoCola will be available at the Happyland resort and he swears it is ten times better than Dr. Pepper, Coca-Cola and Pepsi. His vodka “Precious” will be distributed through a company in Canada called Jewel Line. Encapsulated inside the top of the tear-dropped shaped, crystal bottle of this smooth tasting vodka is a small blue Sapphire. He said the only change the company would like to make is to add his picture on the front of the box. His champagne, “Joe” was made in Italy and is scheduled to hit the shelves soon. These are just some of Joe Jackson’s business ventures he has launched within the last two years.

His recent travels included a business trip to Japan, China and Russia. He also attended a musical concert in Spain called, Forever King of Pop where he received a standing ovation before and during the two hour show. With water filled eyes he said that it was the best reenactment of Michael that he has ever had the pleasure of experiencing. At the Barbados Music Awards, he was given the “Icon Award” and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” (In Memoriam) of Michael Jackson, and at the Pocono Mountains Film Festival he received “The Humanitarian Award.” As he awaits the completion of his new home, he decided to place his awards and pictures all over his temporary residence. Peeking out from a corner was a framed picture of Janet’s album cover, which sat boldly in front of awards, plaques and proclamations. Lying nearby were platinum and gold records of various family members and large sized pictures and drawings of Michael. Clearly they symbolized moments of pride not just to him, but to the legacy of his family. One major point I must add. I noticed how much Joe Jackson is loved and welcomed in other countries. How excited foreign dignitaries are just to have an opportunity to do business with him. In Germany, the state officials had the airport shut down when he arrived, in Vietnam, a celebration was planned, but here in the United States it’s a different story. The tabloids love to exploit him. Michael loved his Dad, LaToya talks to him often and Janet is still his baby girl. So how much longer will the image of Joe Jackson be distorted and for what reason? Have we not learned what the words of Michael’s songs were trying to tell us or more importantly trying to teach us? Joe will always be the founding father of one of the greatest entertainment families in the world and without him Michael and all the other members of the family would not have existed. He is a soldier who has fought to pave the way for many and will forever be part of American history. His legacy is timeless. www .LVH media . com

PHOENIX EYRE BY LVH STAFF

Phoenix Eyre is a 28 year old impact technologist. He received his Masters in Social Entrepreneurship from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California and has dedicated his career to creating profitable, large-scale solutions for global human development. His research began in the creation of self-sustaining and self-replicating communities for at-risk populations (orphans, widows and refugees). Once the crisis in Syria became more complex, he shifted his research towards creating a stable virtual reality city that would provide universal education, digital employment and rapid collaboration on global issues. He formed the for-profit tech company, The Genesis Development Collaborative, or GenDev, to be a social enterprise that used its technology to create substantial profit that would in-part benefit sustainable human development globally. Phoenix partnered with a series of game developers, defense contractors, scientists, investors and philanthropists to gather the necessary technology over the past three years to create and stabilize this digital city of impact, utilizing defense technology that can handle 200x more data than the public software can process. They began calling the new virtual city, Terra Prime, the first digital city of human development that is for all people – and is without one singular language, generation, government, religion or race. Terra Prime beta will be releasing in the coming months. Phoenix then began partnering with various movie studios, universities and foundations to create the platform for rapid human development that was financially powered by for-profit entertainment rather than government budgets or grants. Holographic concerts, travel and games so realistic that you feel you’re living in a movie are now technologically achievable. GenDev is currently working on a large joint-venture to release the most immersive mixed reality entertainment experience to date with a major movie studio in Los Angeles where 25% of the profits will fund GenDev’s three primary impact programs: Universal Education, Digital Employment, and The Human Development Prize. GenDev’s Universal Education initiative is in collaboration with UCLA, IBM Watson and several UN departments to help provide individualized and adaptive education for all people worldwide with access to the internet or GenDev’s impact server hubs. The beta will release in mid-2018. The Digital Employment initiative is in collaboration with Red Eye and Community Centers, Inc. in Los Angeles, CA (specifically Watts and Compton) where new jobs in the virtual world are being created for teens in mentoring programs and their parents as they are exiting the justice system into the new impact employment program. The beta will release in mid-2018 but then be opened to the refugee population and the under-employed populations globally after beta testing has completed. GenDev’s Human Development Prize utilizes the repurposed defense software to allow individual researchers, engineers and businessmen and women around the world to join together in holographic laboratories to collaborate on new prototypes and businesses to profitably provide rapid global solutions for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The first prize will launch in early 2018 in Terra Prime’s Human Development Forum. Phoenix and GenDev are always looking for collaborators of a certain pedigree that understand the complexities of the global issues being engaged, the combined for-profit and philanthropic mindsets of GenDev and its global partners, and have an active willingness and ability to amplify either the for-profit entertainment or philanthropic rapid human development initiatives. JOSEPH JACKSON VICTORIOUS FIGHTER WITHIN BY C. MERCEDES MONTGOMERY

Joe Jackson, simply stated was born to win. Growing up in the 1950’s as a young black male, “a man of color,” at age 30 and raising a family of nine with Katherine Esther -- was not only incredibly exhausting, it was life as he knew it, his reality. Widespread segregation still existed in this time period of an unjust environment and dark days casted its gloomy shadows upon many men who often abandoned their families. Unlike Mr. Joe Jackson, his life was his FAMILY. He did everything in his power to keep them safe and under one roof. A will of a former boxer, Joe was determined to fight instead of giving up and giving in to life’s fate and set of demands. He worked lengthy hours at two jobs as a crane operator, barely bringing home enough to get by and though the thought of living the “American Dream” was appealing, it was definitely a farfetched at the time; living any dream for that matter was plainly unimaginable. However, one fine day when it “hit him,” being the “victorious fighter within,” Joe took action and punched life’s challenges right between the eyes, changing the outcome of his life, his families’ life – forever. With faith and hope of achieving significant and appreciable success, Joe intuitively knew that he was the only one who could change the destiny of his family, the Jackson Family, now known today as the First Royal Family of Music. 36

The Jackson 5 is one of the most legend-filled stories, about Michael and his brothers and who discovered them and when. In 1963, Jackie, Tito and Jermaine formed The Jackson Brothers with Mr. Jackson heading the show as the group’s manager. As the trio kept performing in the local talent competitions, they gained attention and recognition. By 1965, Marlon and Michael joined the group and got heavily involved. Truth be told, on August 4th, 1965, Joe answered an audition talent ad placed by Evelyn Lahaie in the Gary Post Tribune newspaper. “On August 14, 1965, as number 55, they auditioned for me, signing in as Michael age 6, Jermaine, 10, Jackie, 14, Toriano, 11 and Marlon, age 8,” said Evelyn. With Ms. Lahaie’s influence and suggestion, Joe Jackson changed the name of the band from “The Jackson Brothers” to “Jackson 5” in no time flat; giving the name more zip and pizzazz! As time went on, the Jackson 5 landed a spot at a respectable venue called the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Repeatedly, the Jackson 5 gave outstanding performances and the group won an amateur night contest, ultimately earning them a Motown record contract that led them to immediate www .LVH media . com

encountered and went through with his family and how he got his children, these “stars” to be who they are. We each have our own story to tell and oftentimes we walk alone in the “shoes of life,” so, it is with much appreciation and anticipation that I await for his book to appear in stores. For all those who shed tears rather easily, prepare some coffee and curl up with a pile of tissues as this book will surely be compelling, profound and quite an emotional ride, as its undertone suggests.

success, becoming the first American group to have four hit singles go straight to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. There is much to be said about each and every child -- Joe and Katherine brought into the world and although by public selection some children received more attention, all of the Jackson children were deeply loved by their devoted parents.

The day in the life of Mr. Joe Jackson isn’t coming to a halt, it is just beginning. In May 2014, he will be at the forefront of excitement and extraordinary entertainment venues as he escapes the glimmering lights of Sin City and soars across the deep blue ocean floors to Cannes, France. Joe Jackson, creator of the Jackson Five and the father of the late Michael Jackson will not only be attending “Jackson Family Foundation Week,” with festivities beginning on Wednesday, May 21st, 2014, he will be honored throughout “Jackson Family Foundation Week” as the heart and nucleus of all the magnificent celebrations. Apparently, what stays in Vegas is supposed to stay in Vegas. Well, it’s quite the opposite in Cannes. Case in point, what will be happening in Cannes already went global as Simon Sahouri, President of the Jackson Family Foundation recently announced to the world that HRH Chief Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandla Mandela, the grandson of the late President Nelson Mandela, heir to his Legacy, will accompany Mr. Joe Jackson at the kickoff ceremonies and attend all celebrations in support of “Jackson Family Foundation Week,” 5th Anniversary at the

Fast forward to 2014, Joe Jackson is an extremely busy man. His company, 7 Seas LLC is involved with a plethora of business transactions. As a successful multi-preneur, Mr. Jackson is currently creating his own beverage called “Joe Cola” and a “Vodka” that will surely wet your whistle. He is also venturing more into the boxing world and movie realm and is getting ready to publish his own book. In his latest quest, “A Journey ~ In My Shoes” is a book depicting his life story – about Joe himself and all the problems he 38

exclusive Villa Oxygene and Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort. This Exclusive VIP Gala Event is to pay tribute and commemorate the life achievements of those that have and continue to make a difference in our World for Peace, Education, Love & Unity between all Cultures and People. This year, through The Jackson Family Foundation Week celebrations and UNESCO’s iSing for Change program, we will honour the legendary, Nelson Mandela, Michael Jackson, and John Lennon during this fantastic “PEACE DAY” Event! In 2009, Joe Jackson officially started the Jackson Family Foundation with himself as Chairman, Katherine Jackson, Vice Chairman and Simon Sahouri, President – collaborating together in their joint efforts and selfless mission to preserve the epic Legacy of Michael Jackson and the First Royal Family of Music, the Jacksons. The Foundation’s desire is to not only build upon, but establish a Jackson Family Museum, Performing Arts and Culture Center in their hometown, Gary, Indiana and abroad. The Jackson Family Foundation continues to expand their efforts to support other charitable partnerships around the world that are beneficial to humanity, as they focus on Youth Advocacy Missions in order to “Help Improve the Academic Performance & Graduation Rates of Global Students of All Cultures,” which essentially transpired into the establishment of The Jackson Family Academy.

Despite media controversy and a multitude of biased opinions, unless something is witnessed firsthand, the portrayal of the “truth” is precisely that; a portrayal, judge not lest ye be judged. Until Joe Jackson takes his last breath, he will undoubtedly continue to live out his legacy, protecting his life’s achievements. If there’s one thing I believe in its giving credit where credit is due, so, with that being said, a sincere “thank you” goes out to you both -Mr. Joe and Katherine Jackson for believing in your dreams and standing your ground through the toughest moments in your lives. For without your sacrifice, the world would have been exempt of your talented children and their love for music, song, and dance. I couldn’t imagine a world without all of you.

THE HAWK!

KEEP A LOW PROFILE AND HIT HARD 42

www .LVH media . com

It was the 50’s, and African Americans were still suffering from widespread segregation. To them, the “American dream,” remained but only a figment of their imagination. At the time there was an unwritten law of death to any black man caught looking at a white woman. Thus he was forced to walk with his eyes cast downward, and consequently, most advertisements targeting black individuals were placed near the ground. In the midst of this unjust atmosphere, we encounter a thirty year old African American man with a family of nine children. To try to make ends meet, he struggles with a full time crane operator job, while juggling two further side jobs. He comes home daily with barely enough to get by. Imagine Joe arriving home to a tiny house after a hard day’s work with groundnuts and bread. “The groundnuts and bread would be devoured by us in less than twenty minutes” is a direct quote taken from Michael Jackson’s authorized biography Moonwalker.

Granted that people Generally acquire fixed habits early in life, a man’s end may therefore be foreseen at midlife. Granted that people generally acquire fixed habits early in life, a man’s end may therefore be foreseen at midlife. Unless you are a dreamer, you can predict how your life will turn out based on the path you are currently on. You know that it is just a matter of time before you start losing your capacities and the things that matter to you. You lose friends and if you are lucky, your parents will die of old age. Your teeth begin to decay and your receding hairline progresses into full blown baldness. Finally your health deteriorates drastically as proof of the hard and poor life you’ve lived. The hopes, dreams and aspirations that burnt deep within you have been chiseled away by the excess baggage society has placed on you. At such times, the Greek phrase rings true: “If the gods love you, you die at birth.” BY SHAWN, RUTT AND CHARLES

Many black men took the only Faustian trade available by abandoning their family for a new life. In return, they gave up their soul for they could never again look at themselves the same way. Left to fend for themselves, most single mothers struggled with their frustrated sons who, for want of opportunity, ended up in prisons, ultimately uttering the euphemistic mea culpa, “I made an error in judgment. Within this context, we meet our protagonist Joseph Jackson. Day in and day out, he is cracking his brains to escape the straitjacket life that surrounds him. However, life seems to be a Manichean devil, always throwing a curve ball when he least expects it. He needs escapism and resorts to playing in a music band called The Falcons.

What if you slept ? And What if, In your sleep You dreamed ? And what if, In your dream, You went to heaven And there plucked A strange and Beautiful flower ? And what if, When you awoke, You had the flower in your hand? What if? This was the flower Joe found upon returning from work one day. The children had broken the strings to his guitar and shrugged in horror. Hoping after hope that he would not discover it. We make plans, but it is life that writes the best stories. He found the guitar. He had them play for him and right there it hit him. This was it. The odds were stacked up against them. Society had predicted, but Joe knew that only he could write his family’s destiny. He grabbed for that flower like a drowning man struggling for that last elusive breath of air. Once asked what differentiated him from most traders, the legendary George Soros commented that when he liked something, he took on a meaningful position. When he shorted the British pound he made sure that the position was large enough so that the winnings would make a difference. He made over a billion dollars in profits for himself within a week. Those are heady numbers! Even if Soros had been wrong and the trade had gone against him, his firm thanks to his shrewed money management would have stood to lose a maximum of 10% of their assets under management. They would be able to carry on and stay open for business. 44

www .LVH media . com

The trade Joseph Jackson took on was beyond money management. His significant position was his entire life savings and his job. And quit his job he did. The Bible says, “Have faith as small as a mustard seed and you can move mountains.” He bet the farm, buying a call option on his family. As we all know, options have another element of risk: time. There was no room for games, child play or second best. Here I stand! To prepare for the big stage, they played every conceivable place Joe could book them: strip joints, brothels, night clubs and bars—pretty much anywhere they could get a gig. In his authorized biography Moonwalker, Michael recalls picking up the coins on the floor that the audience would throw while they were on stage.

the bible says, “have faith as small as a mustard seed and you can move mountains.” Imagine the tension Joe had to hold within his gut, watching the crowd as his children sang. He was not there to enjoy the performance. He couldn’t! The prize of the night determined whether they would have money to pay for a motel room and enough leftover to buy food. Every twitch in the crowd would catch Joe’s attention. His stomach tightening, a chill down his spine and he is holding his breath. When the family had finished performing, Joe was in a worse shape than they were but he never showed it. Night after night, day in and day out, he pushed on.

As the years flew by, Joe hardly had any time to smell the roses. He was too preoccupied with making sure that the family never reverted back to where they started. Then it dawned on him. The year was 1977. He looked over at his sons as they stood in line to meet the Queen of England in London. He had to pinch himself to be sure that he was not dreaming. Just a decade prior to this meeting, he would have been beaten just for looking at a white woman. In those early days, he was struggling to give his children a better life, and now they were being recognized by the Queen of England! He has revealed to me that he never cried when his father passed on, but at that proud moment with his sons, he did fight back his tears. The journey had been difficult, the climb steep, and the sacrifice enormous, but it wasn’t a pyrrhic victory. He had sacrificed his entire middle age life for his children, and yes, he had freed them from a life of poverty planned out for them. Joe repeatedly bet the farm whenever it came to his kids. He believed in them. When Janet wanted to go into music, Joe at that time owned half of the Encino home. He sold his half and used those funds to promote her. He paid for an office in Los Angeles, employed staff and pushed diligently to get Janet into the business. The double bind of this world is rigor and imagination. Too much imagination and you are considered a heretic. Too much rigor and you are confined to the rules of society and all that is considered “normal.” You never achieve much. It is one of Joe’s traits to believe only in big things. He reminds me a lot of Soros www .LVH media . com

who commented to Byron Wien, “Why don’t you go to work only on the days that really count?” Byron replied, “The problem is I do not know when those days will turn up, so I have to go every day. You on the other hand have a knack of picking turning points and can enjoy the luxury of coming to work only on those important days.” In the 80’s, Joe wanted his late son Michael to not deal with Pepsi or Coke but to have his own soft drink. “You are big enough to buy Pepsi!” Joe would tell his son. He wanted Michael to not work for Sony but to own Sony! People consider Joe too much of a dreamer. “Think rationally,” lawyers and advisors would tell his son in the years that followed. “All of Joe’s deals are too lofty. Pipe dreams!” they would say. Well, tell this to a former steel worker who handed each of his sons a briefcase with a million dollars on each of their 18th birthdays! When I first met the Jackson family over a decade ago, I was a huge fan and more intrigued with meeting the children. I too grew up listening and dancing to their music. When I first met Joe, I had initially been influenced by the negative press about him and consequently I too, had a skewed opinion of him.

IF I DON’T HAVE FUN NOW, THEN WHEN WILL I HAVE IT?

The difference between art and entertainment is that with entertainment you like it right away but it sort of leaves you feeling dead at the end. With art on the other hand, you initially do not like it, it is an uphill struggle, an acquired taste, but it leaves you feeling rich and good about yourself at the end. We see this in the movies, like the good guy/bad guy shoot out. As we leave the theater, the scene is out of sight, out of mind. Then with movies like A Beautiful Mind, The Pursuit of Happyness or The Pianist, you leave the theater in deep contemplation and feel enriched about the event. Such has been my experiences with Joseph Jackson. As the years go by, I have grown to appreciate, respect and like him more and more. All the teaching and books of systems theory, behavioral, emergent systems, recursive feedback loops, etc., could never replace the one to one firsthand lessons I have learned from this man. Joe is built of brick. I mean this literally. Brick by brick, and callous hand by callous hand. He has been tried and tested and risen by his own bootstraps. The man has bestowed street smarts I could have never picked up: How to size up a person in five minutes and who to trust; how to bet big and have the guts to pull the trigger on those leveraged trades; how to run so as to live and fight another day; how to impress; how to break away from people who are wasting your time and will make you fail; how to be ruthless. Last but not least, pearls of wisdom beyond the ages. His words, “Always make them believe that they are smarter than you are. Never let them know how you know what their game is! It takes a great man to admit he is wrong! But it takes a greater man to keep quiet even when he knows he is right! Always remember that.” It has been over two decades since our paths first crossed. As I sat across him in Las Vegas while he relaxed in the foyer, his favorite spot of his home, he slowly mutters. “It was a hard, steep climb, look what it did to me healthwise.” Shawn, Rutt and Charles wish you a wonderful 89th birthday celebration ! 46

JOE JACKSON‘S DIARY ABOUT HIS WIFE, CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN

KATHERINE

DAY 1-11

DAY 1 “What I can say about Katherine, is she has the gentlest soul of any one I have ever met. And she loved her children. She was really a very good mother to the children. She knew where every single one of them was at all times while she was also working. She did keep them off the street. Many don’t know this but she helped me a lot rehearsing the kids. Although she does not celebrate birthdays she knows all their birthday’s by heart. We’ve been through a lot together”

Her unique character-when Katherine and I argue as couples sometimes do, I am not worried at all if she is loud, shouts or screams at me. But when she gets really quiet, ooh that is when I know to be very very careful around her. Still water runs deep. There is so much of Michael in her.

REBBIE

DAY 2

What can I say about Rebbie? She is my eldest child and as most first borns do, she carried the weight of responsibility to look after her brothers and sisters. She is a good daughter, 100% Jehovah Witness. She raised all her children as Jehovah witnesses. As Katherine had to work, the responsibility fell on her to cook and look after my other kids. She helped Katherine a lot in raising the kids, and I do have much to thank her for how she carried herself through the years. 48

JACKIE

DAY 3

About Jackie... He has a very strong will and does not like being told what to do. A story comes to mind during his growing up years. I bought Jackie a brand new saxophone because I wanted him to play some type of instrument besides just dancing and singing. He looked at the instrument, took it with him to school, came back home and told me as a matter of fact that he did not want it. One day, years later he came into my office and asked me “How come I am not playing any instruments. I replied, “You said you did not want it and you put it down”. He inquired why I never forced him as it would have been good for him. I never told him why not, but I knew his will was to strong back then to be forced into doing something he never wanted to do. That was why I never tried.

TITO

DAY 4

What can I say about Tito. He would have been a good diplomatic political leader. He raised his boys the right way and taught them all the good stuff. I am very very proud of the way he raised his sons, the 3T’s. What made the 3T’s so good is they copied after their father. Tito had the patience to teach them. Some of them sleep with keyboards right by their bedside, so if they get up in the middle of the night with a tune in their head, they write it down, practice as not to forget it. They are excellent writers, good producers and good entertainers. He always had cool way about him and my hat goes off to him for the great job he has done with raising my incredible grandsons. www .LVH media . com

JERMAINE

DAY 5

Jermaine is the type of Kid who is very sensitive and extremely good at playing the base guitar. I have not met anyone who can play the base better than him. He loved to play the base. He taught some of his kids to play the guitar too! Actually one of his kids a few years ago was playing the lead guitar with him on stage. I have always felt that no one can sing a ballad song better than Jermaine. He has a God given talent to sing ballads better than anyone in this world. I am not saying this simply because he is my son. I have been around the block and know quality when I hear it. I only wish he sang them more often than he does.

LATOYA

DAY 6

Latoya: Latoya is the type of young lady who loves to Entertain. I think she would have been a great interior and fashion designer. She is very particular and likes the finer things in life. She has her show going on now with the OWN Network and is engaged to someone I like, Jeffre. She has invited me on her show multiple times and makes certain to attend any of my events. I have grown very close to her over the years. She has surprised me in a very positive way. Never in my dreams did I imagine her showing me this much appreciation and love. She calls me all the time and is one of the few who went on TV and said “My father had a stroke. I am proud to call her my daughter and wish nothing but the best for her. 50

MARLON

DAY 7

Marlon I can say is a determined soul. He might not have been as quick at getting something right away as Michael did, but he would work at it until he got it. He could put his mind to something and stay focused. He did learn a lot from Michael as they were both very close in age. He is a great dancer, but was in Michael’s shadow so the public never go to discover how talented he as a solo artist could be. I recently watched him perform on stage with his brothers, and I could see the moves flow naturally out of him. I am happy to see him get the recognition he deserves.

MICHAEL

DAY 8 Michael was like this. He was the type of kid who loved kids. I remember, .. a long time ago, when I used to give him his allowance after the shows. He would use it all up to buy a lot of candy. He would get the children in the neighbourhood to sit down with him in a circle, and he would keep feeding them candy, laughing and having the time of his life. I would look at him and it was beyond me, how in the world he got the most pleasure watching other kids eat candy.

Another thing, he was so fast. That boy was quick. Once we had a very mean dog in the yard, a black doberman. This dog was so mean and fierce, we called him by a dictator’s name (I can’t mention the name). Now every Sunday, Michael would practise his dancing for about 2 to 3 hours. He had just got done doing his routine and was out walking with Randy his little brother. They did not notice that the dog had got out of the yard and it came chasing after them. Michael was so fast, dashing out of the dog’s way in the split of a second and jumping on top of the car. The dog did however get Randy, biting Randy on his back leg. I rushed after the dog and was able to set Randy free. It was very dangerous because Randy might never have been able to walk again, had the dog continued its bite. Years have gone by and I can still see it all happening like a movie. How Michael was able to outrun the dog that fast, and still have the presence of mind to Jump is beyond me. What else … Let me see, He was also a master at imitation. He could see something once, and would be able to www .LVH media . com

51

imitate it. The songs he did, he did at home, so when he went into the studio, he knew exactly what he wanted. Somehow he knew how to think ahead. He did save my life once. During the early days, there was this gang who would come to shows without paying and take our instruments which we had paid dearly for with the little money we had. My boys and I were getting ready to do a show, when this group showed up. I was not having it anymore this time and I stood up to fight them by myself. I was putting up a fight, when one of them knocked me in the back of my head with a microphone, knocking me out cold. As I lay unconscious, bleeding, little did I know, but Michael had run into the street to pay phone. He called out to people walking by if they could carry him, as he was unable to reach the phone because of his height. They did lift him up, and he called 9-1-1. After the ambulance got to the show and worked on me, I was barely able to get up. I remember Michael and the boys looking at me with their youthful eyes, full of confusion as if asking “What do we do know?”. I looked straight at them and without any hesitation said “You go on stage and do the show, like nothing has happened. The show must always go on!” Michael internalized that lesson and over the years, even in pain, stress, sadness, he would never let the public see it. He was a professional till the end. In my eyes “The Greatest Entertainer that ever lived”.

RANDY

DAY 9

Randy can play almost anything on stage. Because he was too young at the time to join the group, and us keeping him in all the time (looking after him), he got to spend most of his time playing around in the studio with almost all the various instruments. As he grew older he became more the percussionist. He is an extremely good producer and song writer. He is the one who wrote that famous song on the Jackson’s album, you know… the one… Well you get this way as you get older. He put together a group “Randy and Gypsy’s”. I loved that album. I think it would have done much better if they had given it a little more promotion. 52

JANET

DAY 10

Janet, the youngest in the family is very very smart. She was more like a tough kid. She was real rough. I mean she was rough. What do they call them… yes … tomboy. She was a tomboy. She could whop all the girls. She was really rough and really really smart. She is really easy nowadays. She has mellowed. She is now married and living a good life with her husband. I always felt that she was a natural when it came to acting. She did that movie, with the late Tupac Shakur. I thought it was a very good movie, and I was very proud of her performance. As great and known as a singer as she is, I think the world has yet to recognize her extremely great talent as an actress that surpasses her singing. She wants to have a good part in a strong action movie. I can’t wait to see her in one. She did surprise me once, picking me as her date to the premiere of the movie she did with Eddie Murphy. Now Eddie is a great friend and I consider him one of this generation’s greatest comedians, but right in the middle of watching the movie, as proud as I was of Janet, I never let her know that. She asked me what I thought and I remember telling her “You should be bigger than this. You should be the lead actor in the movie and carrying it”. I know the comment upset her, because she became quiet and I knew it. But i know her so well; that I knew she was going to channel that anger to prove that she could do better and was right. She came back even stronger with greater movies. And you have not seen the best of her yet. That’s my girl. When I suffered 4 strokes last year, and was in the hospital recovering, only two people in my family traveled all the way to see in the hospital. My granddaughter Brandi, (Jackie’s daughter and my baby girl Janet) sat right next to me as I lay in bed, spent time with me, talking about a lot together. It meant a lot to me. I lay there listening to her as she talked about how she was going to get married. I am happy for her and wish her nothing but the best! I never tell you this, but I am proud of you Janet.

GRANDCHILDREN

DAY 11

I would like to thank everyone for the heartfelt messages of best wishes on my Birthday. I’m 86 years old and still going strong. I spent the full week of my birthday between Tokyo, Barcelona and I am on my way right now to New York via London. I want to thank the fans who continue to be loyal and kind to me. Everywhere I have gone, I have been shown much love. I would like a few words on my 86th Birthday for all my grandkids. You are so many! The three pictures are all of me. I never listened to society when it told me, that my life was destined for the steel mill. That my offspring to a life of hardship. I never listened when it judged us by our race. I never listened when it said our music could not transcend race, culture, boarders or religion. I never listened when I was laughed at for dreaming I would make my family (Your uncles) into a music group. I did not care when I heard the laughter of the neighbors and the mockery and sinister comments. I never listened when it called my late son names, ridiculed and joked about him. Society would not have cared had we been on welfare in Gary Indiana, nor would it have come with a helping hand. It had no chicken in that fight. Why would I care what it thinks, writes or says about me, now! Why? Why would I?? Why in the world would I??? All it takes is to believe in you. But you cannot be able to believe in yourself if at the same time you listen to all the negative comments of others. The two do not go together. Let others spend their time writing and talking negatively about you. Let them talk, you go and do it! Belief comes with experience. So do not be afraid to feel scared. It is o.k. Your uncles were scared too. Society may predict, but only you will determine your destiny. I remember at the Apollo theater, they had heard that if you can perform there and they accept you, you can perform anywhere in the world. But they also heard that if they did not accept you, they would throw things at you on stage. That scared them like crazy. I remember watching them touch a little stump on the stage for good luck. After they got through that show, I could see the belief in their eyes and I knew nothing could stop us. Stevana: I would travel all over for you. I remember flying back to Boston for your graduation. I would not miss it for anything in the world. It was a great day to watch you graduate. I look forward always to your calls and visits, the little notes and touching birthday wishes. You never fail to send me. Stay focused, the world is yours. Brandi: You have grown up so quickly. Seems only yesterday you were a baby. Your actions are true. Coming to the hospital when I suffered 4 strokes and staying by my bedside. Prince: I know your father Michael raised you right and you will never forget him. I know you loved him dearly. You are only finding out now how big he was. I enjoy your calls all the time. “Hi Grandpa, I am just checking on you”: I can hear that sentence even as I dictate this.

I NAMED THE

JACKSON FIVE BY EVELYN L AHAIE

My name is Evelyn Lahaie. To me it is an HONOR to be part of the HISTORY of MICHAEL JACKSON THE WORLD’S GREATEST ENTERTAINER Here is how it all began: While still in high school, I entered a contest sponsored by RKO Studios of Hollywood and a Chicago modeling school and won a modeling school scholarship, completed the training program, modeled professionally in Chicago and opened my own modeling school in Gary, Indiana called Evelyn’s School of Charm & Modeling. I became very active in producing fashion shows in Northwest Indiana and Chicago, and scouting for talent. A Gary department store, Big Top, at Broadway at 53rd in Gary, contacted me to coordinate a Tiny Tots Back-to-School Jamboree Fashion &Talent Show for their late summer-fall season 1965. On August 4th, 1965, I ran a classified ad for the talent in the Gary Post Tribune newspaper and 200 musicians, singers, pianists, dancers, bands, and wide variety of talent of all ages called to audition. Joe Jackson answered the ad and that was when I first met Michael, Jermaine, Toriano (Tito), Jackie and Marlon.

her, Joe Jackson, still had his popular band, “The Falcons,” and still worked as a crane man in the mills as he guided & developed the natural talent he and Katherine saw in their children! On August 14, 1965, as number 55, they auditioned for me, signing in as Michael age 6, Jermaine, 10, Jackie, 14, Toriano, 11, and Marlon, 8. They stole the show! All 5 boys showed exceptional talent; Michael, being the youngest and the smallest and the most brilliantly talented child I had ever seen at the age of 6. Michael had great moves,

The auditions were held at the then Hotel Gary, on the corner of 6th and Broadway, Gary, Indiana, August 1965. This audition with me was part of the beginning of their show-business career their great success, before Motown before superstardom, before baby sister Janet was born while their fat60

great voice and fantastic showmanship and was pure magic!! I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. I KNEW then that they would be successful in show business and Michael would be a super-star! He wasn’t born to be ordinary. He was put on planet earth to be a bright shining star for his music to live forever throughout the world. That little boy had it all. On Aug. 14th, 1965 day, I definitely selected them to appear in the Big Top stores Tiny Tots Back-to-School Jamboree, but I felt the Jackson Brothers name they auditioned under needed to be changed. They were far above ordinary talent, and needed a name with more zip, zing, pizzazz! And I suggested to Joe to change their name to Jackson Five and Joe thought it was a good idea, and that is how the Jackson Five name came about for

these fabulous entertainers. The very first time the Jackson Five name was ever published was in the large ad for the BIG TOP SHOW I booked them for. The ad ran in the Gary Post Tribune on Thursday, August 26th, 1965, with a photo of the Jackson Five included, promoting the show for August 29th, 1965. On August 29th, 1965, Michael, Jermaine, Jackie, Toriano & Marlon wowed the audience as the Jackson Five. I didn’t know THEN that it was Michael’s birthday on that day, both of my children shared the stage with the Jackson Five, with Lauren modeling the children’s fashions, and Terri, age 4, on stage refused to relinquish her Tiny Tot crown & trophy to the new winner. Every year, my student models & I brought entertainment to patients in hospitals & nursing homes, and Joe Jackson

all my models photographs that burned & many albums of my career & my models, The AUDITION SHEETS FROM THE 1965 HOTEL GARY AUDITION were also in the FIRE that destroyed everything! Days later, a fireman went down into the big, black charcoaled hole in the ground where two ladies and a dog died in the fire & brought me some burned papers. Miraculously, the 1965 audition sheets with Michael, Jermaine, Jackie, Toriano, & Marlon’s names & my personal notations SURVIVED the fire with burned edges. That part of JACKSON FIVE HISTORY LIVES ON! It was meant to be, just as the Jackson Five were meant to be successful & Michael meant to be a SUPER STAR!

"MOST OUTSTANDING SCHOOL OF THE YEAR" AWARDED TO EVELYN L AHAIE BY WILHELMINA MODEL AGENCY OF N.Y. 1977

brought the talented JACKSON FIVE along to bring holiday cheer to patients! One of the shows was at the Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Dyer, Indiana Christmas show, and everyone raved about Michael & the Jackson Five, who put smiles upon their faces & brought joy! In appreciation, the nuns presented me with a beautiful ceramic plaque they handmade for me for bringing the shows. I treasured it and the memories for years until the plaque was destroyed when my modeling school building burned down to the ground into ashes in 1977.

Through the years, my name would appear in magazines and newspapers through interviews with Joe Jackson when asked HOW THE JACKSON FIVE name came about. Joe always credited me in Right On Magazine in 1973 & Rap Magazine, Jan. 1973 issue, & in the book Michael Jackson, the Magic & the Madness where my name is misspelled. What a joy and a thrill it was for Michael & I to meet again in Gary, Indiana June 12, 2003 at Roosevelt High School where Michael was presented an honorary diploma & dozen red roses. I happily shot pictures of him on & off-stage and am happy to have pictures with us together and another group

Speaking of my school fire: my modeling students and I had just returned from winning many honors at the Wilhemina of New York City models competition, where I won the MOST OUTSTANDING SCHOOL OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT.When we returned to Indiana, my models & I were still flying high & so happy. Instead of working in class, we sat at my school planning greater things to accomplish. Unknowing to us, that night after we left, arsens BURNED DOWN THE ENTIRE BUILDING TO THE GROUND. EVERYTHING WAS GONE!! I had no insurance. I sobbed because so much was lost, but the next day when I saw them pull up the charcoaled body of one of the two ladies that lived in the above apartments, I realized my loss was inconsequential to their loss….Besides 62

shot we’re both in. Little did I know THEN – THAT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME WE WOULD MEET? On June 25, 2009, I was totally devastated hearing the announcement of Michael’s death. I sat on the floor in front of the TV sobbing and was numb for days and did not want to believe that he was gone. The whole world mourns his death, but his memory, his music lives on forever. His spirit lives on. His gentle loving, caring heart lives on and we must carry on his philosophy of each of us making the whole world a better place. In memory of Michael Jackson through an enormous amount of tears, I’ve made seven quick sketches of Michael to share with others.

YOUR MONEY MINDSET COACHES MICHAEL AND ROBBIE MATHEWS BY RENE WATSON

“We can show you how to Totally Change Your Life, Financially, so you can Stay Debt-Free, Spend Guilt-Free and Live Financially-Free.” Michael and Robbie are successful global entrepreneurs, engaging international speakers, money mindset coaches, certified life accountability coaches, real estate investors, and authors of their self-published book titled Financially Speaking: The Best Improvement Starts with Self-Improvement-Create Your Own Economic Stimulus Plan. They are the co-founders of THE MATHEWS ENTREPRENEUR GROUP (TMEG), a company established in 2007 in the United States. It is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. TMEG specializes in personal financial literacy education, coaching and accountability. Michael is the CEO and Robbie is the President. They believe their role in this world is to “motivate, inspire and empower people to Totally Change Their Life, Financially. We want to change how people “Think, Act and Feel” about their money and to provide them with the knowledge and skills needed to take control of their personal finances.”They developed seven “You Can Be W.E.A.L.T.H.Y.©” principles that are designed to inspire and teach their clients how to “Stay Debt-Free, Spend GuiltFree and Live Financially-Free. So, they can achieve and maintain lifelong financial stability through responsible and educated financial decision making and consumer spending. We want them to build a legacy for their future generations as well as for society at large.” Early in life, Michael enrolled in the University of Hard Knocks where he failed financially. He spent his hard-earned money on his lifestyle. He filed bankruptcy, had his car repossessed, bank accounts drained, you name it, he experienced it. He decided to graduate from the University of Hard Knocks around the age of 40, took personal financial literacy education seriously and never looked back. After changing how he was negatively thinking, feeling, and acting about money, he began building wealth. His philanthropic journey began as he started giving back to educational causes. On the collegiate level, he supported 66

HBCU`s (i.e. Historically Black Colleges) and Universities in the United States. Michael says that, “most people in my field have degrees; however, I have actual real-life experiences that have allowed me to be successful.” The most exciting part of his role as CEO, Michael says, “is creating new products and services from a single idea that has the capacity to positively impact the lives of others.” Michael also has 30+ years’ experience in the private and public transportation sector of Chicago. He is retired from the Chicago Transit Authority. He began playing basketball in high school, moved on to college and entered in the Pro/Amateur League in Chicago and the Professional European League, based in Salzburg Austria. Robbie has 40 years of Information Technology development and management experience within the retail and financial services industry. During these years, she served as a diversity and inclusion advocate and global mentor. She is retired from a Chicago based Fortune 500 international financial services firm. She is also an advocate for giving back both time and money to the community as she believes becoming successful comes with a greater responsibility to help others. Robbie demonstrated her commitment to the community through 30+ years of donating time and money to the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago and other charitable organizations. Says Robbie: “I am very confident in my ability to accomplish any goal I set my mind to. I can be a little stubborn and controlling at times which adds a touch of “spice” to my personality. I live by the financial literacy principles that we preach/teach. I know first-hand that educating yourself is critical to making sound

down to the next generation. During the U.S., economic downturn in 2007, overnight, people lost hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars. They decided to revisit our own personal portfolio. They discovered that they were in the same boat as others when it came to losses. They acquired more knowledge and understanding on how to manage their personal finances. They restructured their personal financial options and began to see a positive resurgence in their cash flow. They invested in real estate which grew their passive investments.

68

Michael was inspired to share his newfound knowledge on how to improve your personal finances with others. In 2006, Michael turned his past financial adversity into his third and most satisfying career as a writer. Michael self-published his first book, the first edition of Financially Speaking: The Best Improvement Starts with Self-Improvement in 2008. After the economic collapse, Michael and Robbie were compelled to enhance and expand the content of his first book. His goal was to further help educate and motivate the millions of people that loss their homes, jobs and savings and take back control of their personal finances. Through Michael and Robbie’s own personal financial adversities and philanthropic efforts, they saw firsthand the benefits of helping others improve their lives. This experience, coupled with seeing family and friends experience economic turmoil without any knowledge of how to get themselves out inspired them to take up the mantle of financial education. They are actual proof that “Financially Speaking: The Best Improvement Starts with Self-Improvement.” They self-published the second edition of “Financially Speaking: The Best Improvement Starts with SelfImprovement-Create Your Own Economic Stimulus Plan in 2016, which became the cornerstone that formed the company’s financial education wings.” Using their book “Financially Speaking: The Best Improvement Starts with Self-Improvement-Create Your Own Economic Stimulus Plan,” they developed 7 principles that they live by. The principles are designed to help you achieve life-long financial security through financial literacy education. “People should believe that “You Can Be Wealthy©”. One can accomplish anything with the proper mindset and plan.” Michael and Robbie, practice what they preach: “Even though we started late in life, we worked together and

made a plan that allowed us to be able to retire early, 8-9 years before being officially eligible for government retirement benefits at age 66. We now live financially secure and travel the world, enjoying life on our own terms.” They also made the decision to speak publicly in the United States and internationally about Financial Literacy Education. “Financial Literacy education is not a priority in our school systems. So, it is important that the issue be addressed by all of us and at all levels of society.” In Chicago, Michael interviewed Mike Ditka, the Coach of 1985 NFL Chicago Bears Super Bowl Champions. He asked Coach Ditka; “Because several athletes have lost over one hundred million dollars, what advice would you give young professional athletes about how to best manage their personal finances?” Coach Ditka stated that “the league should have a financial literacy program for rookies.” In Los Angeles, Michael also interviewed Actor Al Pacino. Michael asked Mr. Pacino “by you experiencing both poverty and a high level of success, what advice would you give young actors and the public at large about how to manage their money?” Mr. Pacino said; “If you come from poverty like me, you must deal with your money, if you don`t they (accountants) will take it from you.” GLOBAL IMPACT In February of 2017, Michael and Robbie shared the stage with one of their business coaches, JT Foxx, while speaking in Johannesburg South Africa at the JT Foxx Tycoons of Wealth weekend. They spoke in front of a crowd of over 1,200+ attendees from 20+ countries. During their speech, Michael and Robbie shared their global message about personal financial literacy education and the need for change. Michael says, “Bad money habits are destroying the dreams and futures of individuals across the globe. It doesn’t matter what currency you use – US Dollars, South African Rand, Euro, or the British Pound, it`s safe to say, and we all can agree that debt is a global problem.”

Michael and Robbie also spoke directly to the South African people on live television, on radio and via local newspaper articles. Their message is direct, straight-forward and tells it like it is: “If you have money to spend, you have money to save. STOP buying items when you are depressed. STOP falling for the buy-one-get-one-free promotions. STOP buying all the shining objects being constantly waived in your face. And most importantly, the Mathews couple preaches, STOP keeping debt when you have extra cash to pay it off.” Robbie also stressed that “You can’t get wealthy working a 9 to 5 job. Don’t make the mistake of working 40 hours a week for 40 years just to end up living off 40% of your income when you retire. Think outside the box… Start a business, learn to generate passive income.” These are all lessons that they personally had to learn the hard way. In addition to Michael and Robbie delivering an empowering financial literacy education speech in Johannesburg, Robbie personally interviewed Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Ndaba Mandela live on stage. She asked him, “What advice would he give the people of South Africa to help them change from a culture of spending to a culture of saving for their financial future?” Mr. Mandela, responded, “You must make your family a priority and save for your future. My inspiration is my children and the children across the world.” While in South Africa, Michael and Robbie took a walk

on the “wild side” and stepped outside of their comfort zone. They jumped into a pit to cuddle with some “lions” albeit baby ones!! Despite Robbie’s, fear of heights, they went to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town and to the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai! There is a special quote that they both subscribe to that states, “Being courageous doesn’t mean that you aren’t afraid. To be courageous, means that you have the inner strength to embrace being afraid and still move forward.” THE IMPORTANCE OF COACHING Michael and Robbie are Financial Literacy Educators and Money Mindset Coaches. According to Michael, “in every aspect of your life from birth to death, we all experience some level of coaching; it starts with our parents teaching us how to walk and talk, right from wrong, followed by the teachers who taught us reading, writing and math. The difference between teaching and coaching is that teachers provide you with core educational systems that are designed to help you function within society.

Mike and Robbie on top of Table Mountain/SA

Coaches provides strategies and accountability for you to persevere far beyond the words I can`t or I quit! As a former American and European Basketball player, the difference in winning championships is the will of the coach. The coach identifies all the strengths and weaknesses of the team members, and that of their opponents. They then outline systems for success that is powered by the desire of the team to win, while holding each member accountable. A coach, after careful assessment, will tell you what you don`t want to hear, but knowing that you need to hear it! The coach will help you create the roadmap for your journey, give you advice and hold you accountable for reaching each step along the way to ensure you reach your next destination. But it is up to you to stay the course and follow the plan.

MARIACHI IMPERIAL AZTECA BY EVE GÓMEZ

Mariachi Imperial Azteca was founded in 2009 by Alejandro Ortega and a group of friends all with the same passion for the music of mariachi. Mariachi Imperial Azteca was born in the city of South Chicago, IL. There are not many Mariachi instructors in this area, so we first began to learn music by ear and a few months later we were able to read the music as well. During these years we have met very good musicians that have been supportive to us by sharing their knowledge and wisdom of the mariachi music, since mariachi music is learned by inheritance, it has been a little more difficult but not impossible to learn. Some of our influences have been: Mariachi Vargas, Mariachi Los Camperos, Mariachi Sol De Mexico, Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán, José Alfredo Jimenez, and Vicente Fernandez... Today we are proud to be able to bring happiness and joy to people by playing the melodies of what the mariachi music is. We are currently servicing the Chicago land and Indiana areas. Our clientele is currently made of school events, carnivals, festivals, and all types of social events. Our goal is to continue growing in this industry and to be able to teach new generations the beauty of mariachi music. Today we have students that take classes with us and it is our joy and pleasure to be able to share this experience with them. When we perform for an event we always put our hearts and passion into every song we deliver because our goal is that every one of our clients remembers how beautiful the music of mariachi is. Mariachi Imperial Azteca is here to stay and we hope very soon to be part of your event. www .LVH media . com

CHI-LITES · MARSHALL THOMPSON

The legendary Chi-Lites formed in 1959 in Chicago, Illinois, with the soulful blues melodies of the band with their leader, Marshall Thompson, and the remaining Chi-Lites, their songwriter and lead singer Eugene Record, Robert „Squirrel“ Lester and Creadel „Red“ Jones. Known first in the early ‚60‘s as the „Hi-Lites,“ they changed the name to the „Chi-Lites“ in 1964 to pay tribute to their hometown - Chicago. Sweeping the nation with #1 hits, „Oh Girl“ and „Have You Seen Her,“ the Chi-Lites became an instant sensation on the R&B, Pop and Soul charts. Marshall Thompson, The Last Man Standing, tells his personal story from childhood to the bands origination, its rise to fame, and the many struggles along the way. „With the good times, came the misery,“ recalls Marshall. Losing a member of the band, his best friend, and beloved wife in a terrible automobile accident. This is the story of the personal side of a man who sang about love, romance, and dreams. It will have you laughing out loud one moment and tear at your heartstrings the very next. Last Man Standing, like the songs the legendary Chi-Lites delivered, will keep your pulse beating from the first rhythmic verse until the final note.
