E very New Mexican should make it a personal goal to explore and discover our magnificent state with their family and friends. And what better place to begin an adventure into our state than to schedule a trip through the Golden Triangle Tour and northern New Mexico! There is a reason why the Golden Triangle is referred to as New Mexico’s “backyard playground.” It is so abundant with a diversity of resources. The rich history, the deep rooted culture, values and traditions, combined with the beautiful natural environment are just a handful of qualities that make this northern region so appealing for residents and visitors. Santa Fe, Taos and Las Vegas are three landmark destinations in the triangle that distinctly showcase Indian, Spanish and Old West influences. These towns are anchored by national historic treasures including the San Miguel Mission in Santa Fe, the Pecos National Historic Park, Montezuma Castle, Fort Union National Monument in Mora and San Francisco de Asis Mission Church in Ranchos de Taos. Visitors will appreciate how the villages and towns in the Golden Triangle have evolved...determined to preserve their natural environment and history, yet building communities that reflect their unique sense of place. The Village of Pecos is a good example.
While the Pecos National Historic Park is a prime attraction, Pecos has become a nature and recreation lovers mecca with fly fishing lodges, cabins, guided wilderness trecks and other popular outdoor activities. Then there is the city of Las Vegas which is New Mexico’s largest outdoor architectural museum with 900 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is now a small college town and growing artist community that is the commercial center for the region. The stretch of farming and ranching country side leading to the Mora Valley and Fort Union National Monument are reminders of this areas history as the “bread basket” of Northern New Mexico and the importance of trade on the Santa Fe Trail. Today, visitors will experience an energized Mora that is cultivating its agrarian, recreational, artistic and cultural opportunities with renewed vigor. There is so much to discover in our own backyard! So pack your bags and experience a Golden Triangle adventure into the heart of Northern New Mexico. Bienvenidos! Lavinia C. Fenzi Executive Director and Editor LVSM Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitor’s Bureau
