Personal Statement

Design

| P o r t f o| l iRoe s u m e / / A b o u t M e

From a very young age, I have always been fascinated by the idea of community, form & structure and believe that these ideas continue to propel my love for the built environment. As a young professional, I am pro-active and keen to learn, with aspirations to positively contribute towards innovative and meaningful architecture.

03

Coming from a dynamic family of 6 siblings has greatly taught him that everyone has a story, and we all have the responsibility of claiming our power by channeling these hurdles into a successful future. I enjoy & appreciate working in a team, thus recognising and considering the work, opinions and contributions of others; as I believe this is one of the major keys in having a productive working environment. Through my academic & practice career I have had the opportunity to work in different multifaceted teams which has exposed me to different multi-scaled projects. This has encouraged me to explore spheres that I previously drowned self-doubt with the discovery of the inherent unique talents and abilities that I, like everyone else possess. It has strengthened my belief that we DEVELOP talents, we UNLOCK potential – it is not freely given or received. Passion is very important to me, and has always driven me to pursue excellence in every task. However, I have grown to understand that passion, motivation, or inspiration, is not always present – ‘it must find you working’. And so consistent hard work and dedication are principles that are inherent to me “Compromise; Synthesis, Humility - the secret to working fruitfully with others” - G Stephens ‘17

Third Year Project | 2017 Delta Park, Randburg, johannesburg DESCRIPTION

ADAPTING A HERITAGE BUILDING “Throughout time, people have used visual devices to capture stories. Visual storytelling displays a history of the past, an identity for the present, and a story for the future to compare and appreciate. “ The proposed “Farmers Market Restaurant” celebrates the historical essence of the Delta building & park. The proposed self-sustaining restaurant, fully opens-up to its surroundings allowing the building to express itself as part of the greater Delta Park fabric. The patrons harvest the fresh produce of their desired meal from the vertical garden. The transformative architecture of the building is an ever-present form of visual storytelling as it captures the history of a Delta and tells that story through space. Every building has a storey…

TOWRADS AN ARCHITECTURE OF INCLUSIVITY THAT CELEBRATES THE IDEA OF COMMUNITY

or

Eb ad

Ro

The building fabric communicates both of MEMORY and CULTURE – of place, space, placelessness and lostspace. The notion of IN-BETWEEN speaks of tangible and intangible. The opportunity of the project is firstly in an attempt to find lostspace; Secondly to establish a connection in-between the diversity of both MEMORY and CULTURE.

CONCEPTS IN-BETWEEN: that which is found rather than defined. CULTURE: an expression of a community of people. MEMORY: that which provides a connection with people and place and time.

Towards the open, the green, the warm light, the clean air, learning has become public –part of the

system of living things. While the park breathes public life, a place has been chosen which lies among distinct public realities – the intervention is placed to be a construct amid the system of ‘living things’.

The different spaces learn to work togather to form and address the needs of the community at large. Therefore the building is open and inclusive, gently encountering the ground, while above she shelters. Learning has become open, no longer introverted.

As the building stretches its self across the site, it is anchored by a series of courtyards which

inturn form or act act as breakout and gathering spaces in-between the buildings...furthermore as these green court yard spaces bloom with greenery they help to naturally ventilate by keeping the buildings cool during summers and relatively warm during winters.

The focus of this design seeks to reduce and minimise the negative impact of buildings and construction on our ecsystem. This is achieved through efficient and moderate use of materials, the form and spatial design of the Community Centre.

Preface. Getting started The lense of initiating_As I take the first steps towards my m.arch design dissertation, this paper serves as a framework for what is to unfold later, and thus as an entry point I would like to reflect on the journey that has led to this very moment. This reflection allows me to surface various some critical and relevant moments and perhaps moments that may seem irrelevant to the study. As I intend to thread and curate the arguments of this paper as a story of discovery, they do not only form part of theoretical, technical discoveries but they also a means of discovering one's self. And with that said, it is without a doubt that all these moments (mentioned below) are all key in fueling this research inquiry. Why_My interests in architecture have largely been influenced by my past experiences (both the good & the bad), and the hope for a better future…

Community & resilience_Coming from the dusty roads of a tribal village located in a small town known as Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early 2000’s my parents embarked on their first journey to search for ‘greener pastures’ in the inner city of Durban. Having 6 children meant that they faced many challenges along the way, and so from a young age we had to develop resilience as we learned to compromise, to share, and care for one another.

1

Now it goes without saying that this was my first encounter of the community as and it was through this family structure that I developed my interests to see how these aspects of compromise, share, and care exists in the extended greater public community - what role do people (as individuals) and the built environment have in the making and sustaining our communities. As I reflect, I got to understand that it's not buildings that make community, but people who inhabit space. And therefore, buildings simply become the platforms in which the livelihoods of the community exist and are performed.

(Papanicolaou 2019)

[Set]backs turn to discoveries_Having started my primary education at a Zulu medium school, then later enrolling at an English medium school (Grade 2) meant I was met by a language barrier. At this early stage of my education, I struggled in conducting basic communication, and so it was at this point that I developed “another language” to help me communicate better - an expression of ‘the artists’ hand that meets the paper’. This is when I learnt how to communicate my ideas through drawing and effectively developed my English alongside my art as mediums of communication. Opportunities_During my Honours year as part of Studio Adapt! (2019), we were invited to partake in a nine-day International Forum held in Rwanda focusing around the development of Cultural Spaces for Kigali. This initiative organized by the Rwanda Arts Initiative (RAI), with the assistance of the African Architecture Matters and Bozar Brussels allowed us to engage with and transform abandoned sites which will form “precincts for the production, exhibition and preservation of the work of artists represented by the Rwanda Arts Initiative. These range from painters, sculptors, movie makers, theatre directors, actors, musicians and comedians, amongst others”.1 However, in emerging African contexts, ‘arts’ in the broader term needs to be reimagined in its quest for relevance. Conclude_These reflections on different moments and experiences have given rise to the question of the relevance of art (performance and visual arts) in a contemporary post-colonial and post-apartheid context. In preceding a Design dissertation, this investigation also explores the question; how can architecture facilitate a symbiotic and cross-disciplinary space for innovation & development of new artforms? With that, setting forth the possibilities of an interdisciplinary and experimental Pan-African performative arts center within the context of South Africa. This inquiry is also an extension to a call for the development of such spaces within our South African context by Dr Ricardo Peach (director of the Vryfees in Bloemfontein).

Lwazi | Ncanana _06: Meaning in complexity: This sketch depicts a system of complexities that are represented through organic forms. Similar complex patterns also exist within our bodies, and in their variations can be understood at different scale. When analyzing these natural structures, they can help us to understand a set of principles that can be adopted in generating meaningful design. Which will allow an exploration of the relationship between form and function. (Sketch by Author).

13. Illustration Series Understanding through Analysis by Author

Understanding through analysis and generate forms & spatial: This section presents a series of illustrations done by the author. These illustrations are an analysis of a basic body position in motion as a performance occurs, and different illustrations look at different outcomes (fluidity, structure, core – stability and proposition). This analysis is an initial entry point into a design process, it seeks understand how the movement of the body can be analyzed through motion - as the body challenges the many lateral forces of gravity (Illustrations by Author).
