Welcome to...
A special thanks to The Well Planning Team: Beth Fowler - Penny Heilman - Joanne Hilliard Travis Thompson - Jutta Stallman - deAnn Roe And a special thanks to those from the Infused Arts ministry who assisted with the installation and the tear down. This project would not happen if it weren’t for your heart to serve the church with love and excellence. Thank you to Pastor Brian Rice for providing guidance for this project. The Well is a sacred space experience imagined and implemented by the Infused Arts Ministry.
The Well, Living Word’s sacred space experience, is designed to provide you with a meaningful, prayerful, and Presence-filled environment that allows you to hear God’s voice and respond to Him in love. There are twelve stations that are designed to be experienced in order. This booklet is meant to be a working guide, providing the context for each station and questions to help you engage with the experience.
Each new installation of The Well (January, April, July, October) will have a different theme that will offer you a unique prayer experience. If there is a stirring in your heart and you’d like to speak with someone or would be encouraged by prayer, please contact deAnn Roe at droe@lwccyork.com or 717.755.0089 x 126. She’s available to speak/pray with you or refer you to someone else on staff at Living Word.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Experience at The Well The Well experience has been designed for adults and those
who are able to spend time in quiet reflection and prayer. If there are children with you, please pay attention to their experiences (while still attending to your own). If a child is unable to maintain the quiet needed for The Well, you may need to move through this experience a little more quickly for his or her needs.
[station twelve] Reflection Because of deep love, grace, and forgiveness, you may enter into a richer, more intimate relationship with Jesus. You are invited to meditate on His life, His death,
His resurrection.
As you experienced The Well today, what resonated with you?
The further you move through The Well, the more you will
experience the interconnectedness of themes and reflections. Each space prepares you for the next and every new space gives more perspective on the previous ones. Feel free to return and revisit previous parts of The Well. Using our imagination engages our heart. As you go through
the stations, be intentional to imagine this story as it unfolds.
What did you hear God say to you?
What does He want you to take away from this time?
May you have a special encounter with Jesus at The Well... PAGE 4

[station eleven] Brightest Sunday Jesus promises resurrection. Jesus will resurrect all that is decaying, dying, dead, and gone in your life. What needs to be resurrected? See Jesus raising to life what has died in your life. How do you feel? What do you say to Jesus? What response of worship and love do you offer to the resurrected Christ?
Even to the disciple who denied Him, even to Peter, Jesus brings resurrection and renewal; pardon and forgiveness; a fresh start, second chance, and new beginning. Peter is challenged AND reinstated to a place of intimacy as the lead missional friend of Jesus. (You can read all about this in John 21:15-19).
Now, receive that same resurrection life, love, forgiveness, restoration, hope, power, faith, joy, and so much more. See yourself being filled with the resurrection life of Christ.
Drawing In Here are some thoughts to begin your reflection and meditations. Read, reflect, pray, listen… This is the preparation space. You may come to The Well with many cares and distractions. Your life is filled with responsibilities and busyness. Your mind may be cluttered with the “remnants of a jam-packed day.” Perhaps your heart is burdened and weighed down with hurt and disappointment. This is the time to begin letting those things go and direct your focus to… Christ, His deep love and grace, and all the spiritual blessings He has for you.
Quiet down before God, be prayerful before Him. Psalm 37:7 (The Message) When we are quiet, alert, and aware, we know the deep down longing for a more intimate relationship with Jesus. Often, He is squeezed to the margins of life. This is the time to allow Him to move from the periphery to the center. Jesus misses you when you are not present with Him. He wants to be with you. You bring joy to His heart by carving out time to be in His loving presence… to sit at His feet… to drink deeply from the well of Living Water that He freely offers you.
Just receive… worship… and rejoice. Jesus is alive. And you are alive in Jesus. In Jesus life has triumphed over death. Hallelujah! Glory to God. Blessed be the name of the Lord. Receive… worship… rejoice.
Give your burdens to the Lord. He will carry them.

[station eleven] Drawing In
Whatever weighs you down, use a prayer similar to what follows as a way to offer these burdens to God. Lord, I release ___________________ to You. I hand this over. (Repeat this as often as needed to name as many things as necessary.) I am tired of carrying it. Give me ears to hear You and eyes to see You in this sacred space. I long to be with You, but make that longing even stronger. In Christ’s name. Amen. Gaze upon the face of Jesus. Picture Him in your mind and heart. Feel His presence with you. See the joy in His face; the love, the peace He has for you. You are deeply loved by God. He cares for you...about your day, your circumstances, your relationships, your needs, your struggles. He wants to give you rest; He wants you to be filled with His Spirit; He wants to revive your soul so you can go forth, carrying His love to others.
Take a few moments and draw near to Jesus.
In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly. Psalm 5:3 Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings. Hebrews 10:22a Jesus, I am here to spend time with You, to listen for Your voice, to feel Your touch. May I encounter your love today as I seek you at The Well.
Brightest Sunday As dark was the Friday of crucifixion, that is how BRIGHT is the Sunday of resurrection. Glorious, beautiful, amazing, wondrous, spectacular - these words are not sufficient to do justice to that day.
Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to see the tomb. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, because an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and rolled aside the stone and sat on it. Matthew 28:1-2 (NLT) Then the angel spoke to the women, “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He has been raised from the dead, just as He said it would happen.” Matthew 28:5-6a (NLT) Resurrection Life. Take a few moments and just imagine how blinding and brilliant the light of that day must have been. What are the words you would use to describe that day and the experiences of the disciples on that day?

Triumphant Entry
Now What? Space for personal reflection...
The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. Many in the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of Him. They shouted, “Praise God! Blessings on the One who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said: “Don’t be afraid, people of Jerusalem. Look, your King is coming, riding on a donkey’s colt.”* John 12:12-15 (NLT) & Mark 11:8 (NLT)

[station ten] Triumphant Entry
Things aren't always as they appear. Jesus is King, but a very different king than what the people expected. He enters the holy city, not on a magnificent stallion, but on a young donkey. Not at the head of a powerful military, but with the rag-tag band of disciples.
Now What? There are times when we clearly hear and sense God leading us. Then there are times when it seems wintry cold and dark. These are the times when the GREATEST FAITH and HOPE are needed. How strong is your faith, hope, and love as you wait?
At times we have distorted images and misguided expectations of Jesus. The ways of King Jesus are not always our ways. Above all, the way of Jesus is humility, love, sacrifice, and peace. What images and expectations do you have of Jesus? Not what images should you have, but what images/expectations do you really have? Name them and examine them.
What are you sensing now as you wonder - Now What?
Ask God for an infusion of faith and hope, if you need it, in this season of waiting. Now, reflect on what it means for Jesus to be the Humble King, the Prince of Peace, the Suffering Servant, the Lord of Love. For this is the Jesus who wants to make a triumphant entry into your life‌ this day and every day.

[station three] Now What?
Jesus their Rabbi/teacher, friend, Lord, Healer, King is dead and gone. They cannot fathom what is about to happen on Sunday. Hard things, very hard things happen to all of us. Lingering seasons of difficulty are the immediate world for some of us. Read over the following questions and pick a few to process deeply. Waiting. What are the things for which you are now waiting?
How are you doing with this “waiting thing?”
Last Supper
When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table. Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.” Luke 22:14-16 (NLT) So He got up from the supper table, set aside His robe, and put on an apron. Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash

the feet of the disciples, drying them with His apron.” John 13:4-5 (The Message)
Or is your waiting a more troubled kind of waiting?
"The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is My body, which is for you; do this in

remembrance of Me.' In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in

remembrance of Me. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes'" 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NIV)

[station three]
[station ten] Last Supper
A meal together with his closest friends… The basin and towel… The bread and cup… These are the symbols and signs of our faith. A meal together… Jesus invites you into a relationship of friendship and intimacy. Consider how much you are “wanted” by Jesus. He wants to be your friend. He wants you to be His friend. How would you describe the friendship you have experienced in recent weeks with Jesus?
Now What?
Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus at night, came now in broad daylight carrying a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. They took Jesus’ body and, following the Jewish burial custom, wrapped it in linen with the spices. There was a garden near the place He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been placed. So, because it was Sabbath preparation for the Jews and the tomb was convenient, they placed Jesus in it. John 19:41-42 (The Message)
The basin and towel… The signs of humble service. Jesus is willing to serve you in the most humble of ways. As you look at the basin and towel, imagine Jesus washing your feet. What do you feel as Jesus does this? What do you say to Jesus? What does Jesus say to you?
The bread and cup… The heart of Christianity. Jesus is willing to die for you. More than willing - he is EAGER. First he is friend. Then he is servant. Now Savior. No wonder the old hymn simply says, “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and grief to bear…” Jesus is a friend beyond all others. He is a friend who can save you from all that is wrong. Right now, position yourself in His love. Be grateful, thankful, “awe-full,” wonderfilled.
PAGE 10
The ancient creed reminds us - On the third day He arose from the dead… Jesus died Friday and was buried that evening. The next day was Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath, when no work could be done. So everyone rested. The third day will be Resurrection Sunday. But it is NOT YET Sunday. It is that long day of Sabbath rest. A Sabbath rest unlike any they would have had. A day of heavy hearts. A day of weeping. A day of confusion and doubt. A day (for some of them) of anxiety and fear. Now what? What's next? What lies ahead? What will life be like? These are the questions we have in the face of unexpected tragedy… those times when life turns out VASTLY different than we expected. PAGE 25

Darkest Friday

Sin lost its power Death was defeated
Gethsemane prayer Jesus and His disciples finished eating the Passover meal, then He took them to the olive grove called Gethsemane.
Jesus said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”
Through Jesus' death… We are forgiven, reconciled, renewed, adopted, made alive, set free, given purpose, filled with hope..
Matthew 26:36 (NLT)
The cross is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John,
Three great signs were given:
and He became anguished and distressed. He told them,
The massive curtain that kept EVERYONE away from the Holy of Holies was torn in two. The way to God is open. The earth shook. A sign of God's presence and power. Tombs were opened. Showing death has lost its sting. Truly, Jesus was and is and will forever be the Son of God, Savior of the World, Lord of Life. Sit, listen, pray, draw near to Jesus. Consider ALL that Jesus has done for you through His death.
“My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.” Matthew 26:37(NLT) He went on a little farther and bowed with His face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from Me. Yet I want Your will to be done, not Mine.” Matthew 26:39 (NLT)
What are your deepest thoughts and feelings as you reflect on that Darkest Friday?
Jesus knew what was coming. He knew the suffering set before Him. He struggled with the cost He was about to pay. He had a simple choice to make: avoid the cross or do the will of His Father. My will or THY will? While simple, it is always a struggle.

Darkest Friday
In the midst of anguish, distress, a soul crushed with grief, to the point of death, face to the ground, Jesus shows us the way—to be honest, humble, and draw near to God with this pain. When have you felt this way?
When Jesus gave up His spirit, the curtain in the Temple
Not to run from God. Or hide from God. Not to push down the pain. Nor ignore the confusion. Instead - draw near.
The earth shook, rocks split apart and tombs opened.
Be real

Wrestle with God
What struggle have you had in recent times?
What pain do you bring with you to this sacred space?
What confusion… what burdens… what resistance? For each area of struggle, confusion, resistance, and hurt - can you pray “Thy will be done… Thy will be done… Thy will be done…”? Jesus’ heart was to do His Father’s will. God wants you to desire Him above all else. To say YES to His will. To yield… surrender… trust… Father, Thy Will Be Done. Do you desire God?
How strong is your desire for God and His beautiful will?

was torn in two, from top to bottom. The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, “Truly, this was the Son of God!” Matthew 27:51-54 He took His own blood, and with it He secured our salvation forever. Hebrews 9:12 Jesus said, “I am the way, the Truth, and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6 Through Jesus’ death our relationship with God has been restored. Once Christ has been received and accepted as Savior, we have full and complete access to our Heavenly Father. Anytime. Anywhere. Always. PAGE 23

[station five] It is Finished
Kiss of Death
For this reflection, we want you to move to an intimate understanding of the FULL PRICE Jesus paid for your deep redemption. The physical suffering, as unspeakably horrible as it was, was not the worst thing Jesus experienced.
In the midst of a beautiful olive grove, as Jesus’ prayers rose to meet the Father’s ear, the end had begun.
Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with

which One to arrest when I greet Him with a kiss.”
This is spiritual destruction and personal devastation.
So Judas came straight to Jesus.
Jesus endured this so you will never have to.
“Greetings, Rabbi!” he exclaimed and gave Him the kiss.
By afternoon, He did what He came to do.
Jesus said, “My friend, go ahead and do what you have come for.”

Jesus says to His betrayer, Judas, “My friend….” Jesus died.
Incredible. Powerful.
Jesus is BETRAYED by His friend. A disciple who has been with Him for three years, one with whom He has “done life together,” a person in whom Jesus invested His love, His energy, His wisdom, His ways, and His kingdom purposes. They did life together.
Space for personal reflection...
Now, Judas BETRAYS Jesus. And sets the terrible suffering in motion.

[station five] Kiss of Death BETRAYAL. Most of us know what this is like. We have been let down by those we trusted. We have been disappointed by those we needed. We have been wounded by those we loved. We have been hurt by those closest to us.
It is Finished It was nine o’clock in the morning when the crucifixion began. Nails through each hand and both feet, high in the air, He hung alongside two condemned criminals. Innocence among the guilty. Jesus knew that the physical pain He was enduring was about to end. However, the spiritual pain He sweated blood over was about to begin...
We have been BETRAYED and life has become harder, much harder.
At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. Then, at that time, Jesus called out with a loud voice, Who has hurt you? Who have been your betrayers? Even though this is a painful reflection, it is a needed one.
“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Name those who have hurt/betrayed you.
Mark 15:33-34 A sponge soaked in sour wine was lifted to Jesus’ mouth.
Consider how hard life has become because of that hurt.
When He tasted it, He said, “It is finished.” Then He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. John 19:29-30

[station five] Beaten and Mocked
As you are able, use your imagination to see what happened to Jesus. Flinch as you imagine it. Recoil from it. But please, do not minimize or avoid it. For Jesus does this for you. For the joy set before Him, Jesus would endure the total suffering of the trial, the torture and the execution on the cross. The JOY Jesus saw, was your salvation, your redemption, your restoration back to the heart of God.
Kiss of Death And consider this: Have you become hard because of those betrayals? What does Jesus want to do in you?
What is Jesus asking of you?
In the time of His agony, Jesus saw that great joy. Forgive? What His mother, family, and disciples saw in the moment was brutality and imminent death. What they experienced in those few hours was unspeakable grief and unbearable loss. Sit, Imagine Remember Feel Understand The sacrifice of His Love So Amazing.

Write out a prayer of love and gratitude to Jesus for all He’s done for you.

And you must do one more reflection that will be even more painful. For not only have you been betrayed by others, you also have been a “betrayer.” And you have betrayed Jesus as well. Sit in silence. Humility. Sorrow. Repentance.
Jesus is always full of grace toward you.
Beaten and Mocked Jesus saw many people before this dark night was over. The council of religious leaders bound Jesus and took him to Pilate. Pilate was anxious to please the crowds who were yelling, “Crucify Him!!” He ordered Jesus to be flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned Him over to the Roman soldiers.
The Roman solders took Him into their headquarters and called out the entire battalion.
But that grace becomes even more precious when you understand - it is grace given to a betrayer.
They dressed Him in a purple robe and made a crown of long, sharp thorns and put it on His head. Then they saluted, yelling, “Hail! King of the Jews!” And they beat Him on the head with a stick, spit on Him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship. Mark 15:15-19 Now comes the hardest part of the story. It goes on and on. Jesus is beaten, mocked, punished, brutalized by the soldiers. Most of us cannot emotionally handle what it was really like for Jesus. So we sanitize the scene, clean it up, shorten it, keep it at a distance.

[station six] Peter’s Denial Like Peter, we too have been afraid… afraid of what others think about our faith. Jesus knows you won’t always be strong enough to follow Him. Jesus knows you will be afraid. Jesus knows you will deny knowing Him. Jesus knows you will go along with the world to fit in. Jesus knows you will compromise with what is wrong to get ahead. He knows you will experience shame and guilt as you do this. He knows you will rationalize and make excuses. He knows you will do all of this.
Peter’s Denial In the darkness of pre-dawn, the flickering light of a warm campfire lit up Peter’s face just enough for one of the high priest’s servant girls to say,
“You were one of those with Jesus, the Nazarene.” Peter said, “I don’t know what you are talking about.” The rooster crowed. “That man is definitely one of them!” Peter denied it again. A bit later some others said to Peter,
Jesus knows. Despite Peter’s many failures, Jesus loved Peter just as He loves you despite your failure.
So talk to Jesus about your failures, weaknesses, fears, compromises, and denials. He knows them already. He is waiting to talk to you about them….
“You must be one of them because you are from Galilee.” Peter said, “I swear by God, I don’t know this Man you’re talking about.” And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And Peter broke down and cried. Mark 14:66-72 One friend betrayed Him. Now an even closer friend denies knowing Him! Betrayed. Denied. Abandoned.

Be real
Pray

Anytime. Anywhere. Always. PAGE 23

Darkest Friday
With Jesus' sacrifice: Satan was conquered

PAGE 25
[station ten]
