Dear Friends: It is a great pleasure to welcome everyone as the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation hosts its 2016 Empire Ball. Nothing is more important to our administration than protecting the health and wellness of all our residents. As the largest and most comprehensive research center devoted to finding a cure for diabetes, DRI is a terrific partner in our efforts to ensure the wellbeing of all New Yorkers. The Institute has already made great progress in achieving its mission, developing a groundbreaking cell-based therapy to combat this disease and continuing to persevere in its endeavors to produce even more cutting-edge treatments. I applaud the Foundation and its Real Estate Division for their significant contributions to the field of diabetes research and for their inspiring philosophy of teamwork and collaboration. I join together with all those gathered in celebrating this organization, whose commitment to improving health and helping those in need resonates so deeply with New Yorkers. On behalf of our great city, congratulations to tonight’s honorees. I offer my best wishes for an enjoyable event and continued success.

Sincerely,

Bill de Blasio Mayor

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIABETES RESEARCH INSTITUTE

CAMILLO RICORDI, M.D. & JOSHUA W. REDNIK December 14, 2016 Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2016 Empire Ball. This signature event, organized and attended by New York City’s real estate and construction industries, has been going strong for 33 years. We can’t thank you enough for your continued support. To date, thanks to your generosity and dedication, we have raised more than $36 million for diabetes research! Camillo Ricordi, M.D.

Tonight, we recognize three outstanding individuals – our honorees Paul J. Amrich, Bert Rahm, and Lucy G. Carter – as well as our event co-chairs, committee, and sponsors, who have gone above and beyond to support the mission of the Diabetes Research Institute. Together, all of our efforts will help “Unlock the Cure” for diabetes. As is the tradition, many amongst this group recently traveled to the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) in Miami to get a firsthand look at how your fundraising efforts are paying off. They toured the laboratories and spoke with the scientists, learning first-hand about the DRI’s pioneering work in islet cell transplantation. They also had the unique opportunity to meet a transplant recipient who has been free from insulin injections for more than six years. Joshua W. Rednik

As we continue our progress on developing the DRI BioHub, a bioengineered mini organ that mimics the native pancreas, your ongoing support through extraordinary events like the Empire Ball is more important than ever. We extend our deepest appreciation to all of you here tonight who have helped to make this event a tremendous success. Enjoy your evening! Sincerely,

Camillo Ricordi, M.D. Stacy Joy Goodman Professor of Surgery Distinguished Professor of Medicine Foundation Director, Diabetes Research Institute Chief, Division of Cellular Transplantation University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

Joshua W. Rednik President and CEO Diabetes Research Institute

LEADERSHIP HONOREE

PAUL J. AMRICH Vice Chairman CBRE, Inc. An undisputed leader in the industry, Paul J. Amrich, Vice Chairman in the New York City Brokerage Services Group, combines marketing intelligence and an incisive understanding of his clients’ goals to consistently achieve outstanding success in leasing and repositioning properties. With 20 years in the business, Mr. Amrich joined CBRE in 2006, after beginning his career at Cushman & Wakefield in 1996. Mr. Amrich’s expertise lies in forging and nurturing alliances with the many landlords and financial institutions he serves. He has completed more than 15 million square feet of leasing transactions, and currently successfully represents more than 13 million square feet of Class A office space on behalf of New York’s premier landlords. Mr. Amrich was promoted to Vice Chairman in January 2012, making him the youngest Vice Chairman in the firm’s history. He has been included in the prestigious Colbert Coldwell Circle—the Top 100 Global Producing Professionals—every year since his arrival at CBRE in 2006. In the last seven years, he has been one of the top 25 producers nationally at CBRE. A few of Mr. Amrich’s recently completed deals include the 389,500-sq.-ft. 30-year lease for New York University on behalf of Columbia Property Trust and the 99,000-sq.-ft. 15-year lease for Palantir Technologies in the Meatpacking District on behalf of Rockpoint Group and Atlas Capital—a unique opportunity in that the property was a functioning parking garage until 2014, when the space was developed into a premier office building. Mr. Amrich and his team toured the client through the site prior to the redevelopment, securing Palantir as the anchor tenant for the entire asset. Additionally, since 2012, he has been an integral part of the repositioning of 1411 Broadway on behalf of Callahan Capital Properties and Ivanhoé Cambridge. The project was recently completed with great success, driven by the implementation of a large capital improvement program and more than 250,000 sq. ft. of new leases. While at Cushman & Wakefield, Mr. Amrich was named one of New York City’s 2005 CoStar Power Brokers for office leasing. In 2005, for the third time in four years, he received the company’s Strategic Agency of the Year Award for leasing more than 700,000 rentable sq. ft. within nine months at Grand Central Square (485 Lexington Avenue/750 Third Avenue) for SL Green Realty Corp. In 2004, he received the award for leasing more than 400,000 rentable sq. ft. within 18 months at 2 Grand Central Tower on behalf of Macklowe Properties; this achievement exceeded Ownership’s expectations and resulted in savings of $12 million, due in part to 30% of the transactions being in-house deals. He first received the citation in 2002 for being the lead broker in the successful lease-up at 1370 Avenue of the Americas, a 350,000-sq.-ft. Class A office tower, which led to the disposition of the property and resulted in a 150% return on investment to Ownership. In addition, he was awarded a client commitment award in 2001 for successfully brokering 700,000 sq. ft. of 9/11 disaster recovery space on behalf of The Bank of New York. Mr. Amrich is often tapped by the media, including Bloomberg and the New York Times, to offer his unique insight on the commercial real estate market. He regularly lends his expertise to industry panel discussions, including the CBRE New York Office’s quarterly media updates, and has been profiled in leading industry publications such as the Commercial Observer and The Real Deal, most recently in June 2016.

Incidence of Diabetes complications • Diabetes can affect many parts of the body and is associated with serious complications, such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-limb amputation, among other conditions. • heart Disease, heart attack and stroke • In 2003-2006, after adjusting for population age differences, cardiovascular disease death rates were about 1.7 times higher among adults aged 18 years or older with diagnosed diabetes than among adults without diagnosed diabetes. • In 2010, after adjusting for population age differences, hospitalization rates for heart attack were 1.8 times higher among adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes than among adults without diagnosed diabetes. • In 2010, after adjusting for population age differences, hospitalization rates for stroke were 1.5 times higher among adults with diagnosed diabetes aged 20 years or older compared to those without diagnosed diabetes. • blindness and Eye Problems • In 2005-2008, of adults with diabetes aged 40 years or older, 4.2 million (28.5%) people had diabetic retinopathy, damage to the small blood vessels in the retina that may result in loss of vision. • In 2005-2008, of adults with diabetes aged 40 years or older, 655,000 (4.4%) had advanced diabetes retinopathy that could lead to severe vision loss. • kidney Disease • Diabetes was listed as the primary cause of kidney failure in 44% of all new cases in 2011. • In 2011, 49,677 people of all ages began treatment for kidney failure due to diabetes; and a total of 228,924 people of all ages with kidney failure were living on chronic dialysis or with a kidney transplant.

• amputations • In 2010, about 73,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed in adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes. • About 60% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations among people aged 20 years or older occur in people with diagnosed diabetes. • hypoglycemia and hyperglycemic crisis • In 2011, about 282,000 emergency room visits for adults aged 18 years or older had hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) as the first-listed diagnosis and diabetes as another diagnosis. • In 2011, about 175,000 emergency room visits for people of all ages had hyperglycemic (high blood sugar levels) crisis as the first-listed diagnosis.

Diabetes is a Deadly Disease • Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2010 based on the 69,071 death certificates in which diabetes was listed as the underlying cause of death. In 2010, diabetes was mentioned as a cause of death in a total of 234,051 death certificates. • Diabetes may be underreported as a cause of death. Studies have found that only about 35% to 40% of people with diabetes who died had diabetes listed anywhere on the death certificate and about 10% to 15% had it listed as the underlying cause of death.

The cost of Diabetes • In 2012, the total cost of diabetes in the U.S. was $245 billion. • Of that, $176 billion accounted for direct medical costs. After adjusting for age and sex differences, average medical expenditures among people with diagnosed diabetes were 2.3 times higher than people without diabetes. • $69 billion was attributed to indirect costs (disability, work loss, premature death).

more about Diabetes • Diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to create or effectively use its own insulin, which is produced by islet cells found in the pancreas. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels – providing energy to body cells and tissues. • Without insulin, the body’s cells would be starved, causing dehydration and destruction of body tissue. • People with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump to survive. • Many people with type 2 diabetes can control their blood glucose by following a healthy meal plan and a program of regular physical activity, losing excess weight, and taking medications. Medications for each individual with diabetes will often change during the course of the disease. Insulin also is commonly used to control blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes.

the Diabetes research Institute Foundation is the organization of choice for those who are serious, passionate and committed to curing diabetes. Its mission – to provide the Diabetes research Institute with the funding necessary to cure diabetes now – is a testament to the belief that tomorrow is not soon enough to cure those living with diabetes. the Diabetes research Institute at the university of miami miller school of medicine leads the world in curefocused research. As the largest and most comprehensive research center dedicated to curing diabetes, the DrI is working vigorously to develop a biological cure by restoring natural insulin production and normalizing blood sugar levels without imposing other risks. researchers have already shown that transplanted islet cells allow patients to live without the need for insulin therapy. some study participants have maintained insulin independence for more than 10 years. the DrI is now building upon these promising outcomes by developing a DrI Biohub, a bioengineered “mini organ” that mimics the native pancreas. while various Biohub platforms are being tested in preclinical and clinical studies, the DrI is also developing strategies to eliminate the need for anti-rejection drugs and reset the immune system to block autoimmunity. the Diabetes research Institute and Foundation were created for one reason – to cure diabetes – which is and will continue to be the singular focus until that goal is reached. For the millions of children and adults affected by diabetes, the Diabetes research Institute is the best hope for a cure.
