Dear Friends: It is a great pleasure to welcome everyone as the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation hosts its 2018 Empire Ball. Nothing is more important to our administration than protecting the health and wellness of all our residents. As the largest and most comprehensive research center devoted to finding a cure for diabetes, DRI is a terrific partner in our efforts to ensure the wellbeing of all New Yorkers. The Institute has already made great progress in achieving its mission, developing a groundbreaking cell-based therapy to combat this disease and continuing to persevere in its endeavors to produce even more cutting-edge treatments. I applaud the Foundation and its Real Estate Division for their significant contributions to the field of diabetes research and for their inspiring philosophy of teamwork and collaboration. I join together with all those gathered in celebrating this organization, whose commitment to improving health and helping those in need resonates so deeply with New Yorkers. On behalf of our great city, congratulations to tonight’s honorees. I offer my best wishes for an enjoyable event and continued success. Sincerely,

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIABETES RESEARCH INSTITUTE
CAMILLO RICORDI, M.D. & STEVE K. ORR December 12, 2018
Welcome to the 2018 Empire Ball. This signature event, organized and attended by New York City’s real estate, finance and construction industries, has been going strong for 35 years. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support. To date, thanks to your generosity and dedication, we have raised more than $38 million for diabetes research!
Camillo Ricordi, M.D.
Tonight, we recognize three outstanding individuals – our honorees Glen J. Weiss, Joel M. Brenner and Robert Cuzzi – as well as our event co-chairs, committee, and sponsors, who have gone above and beyond to support the mission of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) and the Foundation. This evening, many buildings along the NYC skyline were illuminated in sparkling blue to celebrate our collective efforts to “Unlock the Cure.” Special thanks to the following partners for being involved in this one-of-a-kind celebration: Empire State Realty Trust: The Empire State Building; The Durst Organization: One Bryant Park, 151 West 42nd Street and One World Trade Center; The Equity Office: The Pyramid at 65 East 55th; Vornado Realty Trust: The Bloomberg Tower at 731 Lexington Avenue. Another special component (and tradition) of the Ball found many amongst this group traveling to the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami to get a firsthand look at how your contributions are being invested. They learned how DRI scientists have been able to advance a number of promising initiatives to the clinical phase of testing and that the DRI is gearing up for several new patient studies that will address the unique challenges posed by the immune system.
Stephen K. Orr
You can have confidence that your support is going to the organization that leads the world in cure-focused research. As one of the largest and most comprehensive research centers dedicated to curing diabetes, the DRI is aggressively working to develop a biological cure by restoring natural insulin production and normalizing blood sugar levels without imposing other risks. As we continue our progress on finding a cure, your ongoing support through extraordinary events like the Empire Ball is more important than ever. We extend our deepest appreciation to all of you here tonight who have helped to make this event a tremendous success. Sincerely,
Camillo Ricordi, M.D. Stacy Joy Goodman Professor of Surgery Distinguished Professor of Medicine Director, Diabetes Research Institute Chief, Division of Cellular Transplantation University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

CAMILLO RICORDI HUMANITARIAN HONOREE
JOEL M. BRENNER, AIA
Vice President, Head of Global Project Management WarnerMedia Joel joined Time Warner in 2013 as the Vice President and Head of Global Project Management after a 30-year career in architecture, construction, and project management, in which he has specialized in development of corporate office buildings, corporate interiors, and hospitality. Joel’s background and professional path has perfectly prepared him for a senior-level career in commercial real estate development. As a young teen, he followed his parents’ participation in a rebuilding volunteer organization that took them across the country working with Habitat for Humanity and Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) to rebuild homes, parks, schools, and other community assets for deeply impoverished communities. That first-hand experience in what it takes to build communities brought him to architecture school. Joel earned his Bachelor of Architecture & Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1985. After earning his degree, he became a licensed architect in 1988 and worked at several firms specializing in architectural design. Joel joined the corporate world of project management at Goldman Sachs in 1993. With a 10-year career at Goldman Sachs culminating in his management of Goldman’s high-rise office Tower in Jersey City, Joel went on to manage many project teams at Soros Fund Management, Citigroup, and Deloitte, as well as in private real estate development. Since joining Time Warner, Joel has led the project team for 30 Hudson Yards. He joined the company not long after the Board approved making a move to a new headquarters for its Manhattan-based operations, and he has directed all aspects of the 1.4 million square foot project – including base building coordination with Related and interior design and construction with Gensler, Structure Tone, and a myriad of consulting partners, including owner’s rep Turner & Townsend. Joel’s project leadership has paved the way for Time Warner’s successful occupancy, which entails moving 5,000 employees to 30 Hudson Yards beginning in March 2019.

According to the CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control) National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2014, cases of diabetes have increased almost 13% over the last four years (29.1 million in 2012 vs. 25.8 million in 2010). Below is a summary of the latest diabetes statistics included in the CDC’s report. You can view the full report at http://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/pubs/statsreport14/national-diabetes-report-web.pdf. How Many People Have Diabetes?
• Amputations • In 2010, about 73,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed in adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes. • About 60% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations among people aged 20 years or older occur in people with diagnosed diabetes.
New Cases of Diabetes in Adults and Children
• Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemic Crisis • In 2011, about 282,000 emergency room visits for adults aged 18 years or older had hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) as the first-listed diagnosis and diabetes as another diagnosis. • In 2011, about 175,000 emergency room visits for people of all ages had hyperglycemic (high blood sugar levels) crisis as the first-listed diagnosis.
• 29.1 million people, or 9.3% of the U.S. population, have diabetes, including 8.1 million people who have diabetes but have not yet been diagnosed (All ages, 2012). • Diabetes impacts all social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds. • Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 5% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes, affecting approximately 1.5 million people. • Among people 20 years or older, 1.7 million were newly-diagnosed with diabetes (2012) – approximately 4,657 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed each day. • About 208,000 people younger than 20 years of age have been diagnosed with diabetes (type 1 or type 2). This represents 0.25% of all people in this age group (2012). • The incidence of type 1 diabetes is significantly higher in people under age 20. According to a 2008-2009 study of 23,525 youths with diabetes, 78% were newly-diagnosed with type 1 diabetes vs. 22% who were newly-diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.*
Incidence of Diabetes Complications
• Diabetes can affect many parts of the body and is associated with serious complications, such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-limb amputation, among other conditions. • Heart Disease, Heart Attack and Stroke • In 2003-2006, after adjusting for population age differences, cardiovascular disease death rates were about 1.7 times higher among adults aged 18 years or older with diagnosed diabetes than among adults without diagnosed diabetes. • In 2010, after adjusting for population age differences, hospitalization rates for heart attack were 1.8 times higher among adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes than among adults without diagnosed diabetes. • In 2010, after adjusting for population age differences, hospitalization rates for stroke were 1.5 times higher among adults with diagnosed diabetes aged 20 years or older compared to those without diagnosed diabetes. • Blindness and Eye Problems • In 2005-2008, of adults with diabetes aged 40 years or older, 4.2 million (28.5%) people had diabetic retinopathy, damage to the small blood vessels in the retina that may result in loss of vision. • In 2005-2008, of adults with diabetes aged 40 years or older, 655,000 (4.4%) had advanced diabetes retinopathy that could lead to severe vision loss. • Kidney Disease • Diabetes was listed as the primary cause of kidney failure in 44% of all new cases in 2011. • In 2011, 49,677 people of all ages began treatment for kidney failure due to diabetes; and a total of 228,924 people of all ages with kidney failure were living on chronic dialysis or with a kidney transplant.
Diabetes is a Deadly Disease
• Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2010 based on the 69,071 death certificates in which diabetes was listed as the underlying cause of death. In 2010, diabetes was mentioned as a cause of death in a total of 234,051 death certificates. • Diabetes may be underreported as a cause of death. Studies have found that only about 35% to 40% of people with diabetes who died had diabetes listed anywhere on the death certificate and about 10% to 15% had it listed as the underlying cause of death.
The Cost of Diabetes
• In 2012, the total cost of diabetes in the U.S. was $245 billion. •O f that, $176 billion accounted for direct medical costs. After adjusting for age and sex differences, average medical expenditures among people with diagnosed diabetes were 2.3 times higher than people without diabetes. • $69 billion was attributed to indirect costs (disability, work loss, premature death).
More About Diabetes
• Diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to create or effectively use its own insulin, which is produced by islet cells found in the pancreas. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels – providing energy to body cells and tissues. • Without insulin, the body’s cells would be starved, causing dehydration and destruction of body tissue. • People with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump to survive. • Many people with type 2 diabetes can control their blood glucose by following a healthy meal plan and a program of regular physical activity, losing excess weight, and taking medications. Medications for each individual with diabetes will often change during the course of the disease. Insulin also is commonly used to control blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes.

The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation is the organization of choice for those who are serious, passionate and committed to curing diabetes. Its mission – to provide the Diabetes Research Institute with the funding necessary to cure diabetes now – is a testament to the belief that tomorrow is not soon enough to cure those living with diabetes. The Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine leads the world in curefocused research. As the largest and most comprehensive research center dedicated to curing diabetes, the DRI is aggressively working to develop a biological cure by restoring natural insulin production and normalizing blood sugar levels without imposing other risks. Researchers have already shown that transplanted islet cells allow patients to live without the need for insulin therapy. Some study participants have maintained insulin independence for more than 10 years. The DRI is now building upon these promising outcomes by developing a DRI BioHub, a bioengineered “mini organ” that mimics the native pancreas. While various BioHub platforms are being tested in preclinical and clinical studies, the DRI is also developing strategies to eliminate the need for anti-rejection drugs and reset the immune system to block autoimmunity. The Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation were created for one reason – to cure diabetes – which is and will continue to be the singular focus until that goal is reached. For the millions of children and adults affected by diabetes, the Diabetes Research Institute is the best hope for a cure.
