A MESSAGE FROM THE DIABETES RESEARCH INSTITUTE
A MESSAGE FROM EMpIRE BALL CHAIRMAN
CAMILLO RICORDI, M.D. & JOSHUA W. REDNIK
PETER L. DICAPUA Chairman, Diabetes Research Institute Foundation Real Estate Division
December 10, 2014 Dear Friends, Dear Friends, It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 Empire Ball, the annual social and fundraising event of the season for New York City’s real estate industry. It has been 31 years since the inception of this incredible fundraising effort, and from that very beginning, the funds raised have supported research dedicated to unlocking a cure for diabetes. To date, your generosity and dedication have raised more than $34 million, a remarkable achievement! Camillo Ricordi, M.D.
On this evening, we would like to congratulate and extend our sincere gratitude to the three honorees, L. Jay Cross, Stephen M. Soviero, and Frederick C. Horwood. Their outstanding focus and support has helped make this year’s event a great success. We would also like to recognize and thank the chairs, board of governors, and committee members for their invaluable contributions. As is the tradition, some honorees and committee members traveled to the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami recently to get a firsthand look at our research. The group learned about the progress being made on our DRI BioHub, an integrated mini organ that mimics the native pancreas. Over the last year, the DRI received FDA approval to proceed with pilot clinical trials that will test a new possible transplant site in the body for a BioHub. This pioneering initiative, which builds on our previous success with islet transplantation, brings the promise of restoring natural insulin production to millions of children and adults living with diabetes.
Joshua W. Rednik
Undoubtedly, your colleagues who have visited the DRI could share a whole new perspective with everyone here tonight, underscoring the meaning behind this very special event. On behalf of the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation, we want to thank everyone for your ongoing support and commitment to our final goal – a future free from diabetes. Enjoy your evening.
Tonight, the Real Estate Division of the Diabetes Research Institute celebrates yet another major milestone in its endeavors to assist in the mission of diabetes research for the sole purpose of finding a cure. As you’ll hear this evening, great strides are being made everyday in the fight against this debilitating disease. Your support of our event has been tremendous and we cannot thank you enough for your continued contributions. With this year’s event, we have collectively raised over $34 million and look forward to the day when our efforts, coupled with the global collaborations with leading scientists and researchers at the DRI, leads us to the final Empire Ball, where we will all raise a glass and toast the mission as being fulfilled. Until that day comes, we are grateful for your continued commitment and dedication to the millions of families affected by diabetes. I am proud to take part in honoring my colleagues: L. Jay Cross, president, Hudson Yards, a Related Oxford venture, Stephen M. Soviero, Senior Managing Director, Cushman & Wakefield, Inc., and Frederick C. Horwood, Assistant General Counsel, Time Warner Inc. With Jay’s exemplary leadership, Steve’s humanitarian efforts and Fred’s distinguished service in philanthropy, all three epitomize the award bestowed upon them this evening and join what is a prominent roster of former honorees. I believe it speaks volumes about this organization and the carrying out of its mission with so many of our former honorees maintaining an active role with our committee. Many of these leaders are involved year-round in the work of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation and each displays a generosity of spirit that benefits the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation every day. Through the dedication of people like you, the Institute will continue to be at the forefront of this field and fulfill its mission of finding a cure for all people living with diabetes.
Sincerely, On behalf of our entire committee, I thank you for your continued support and wish you all a wonderful New Year to come. incidence of diabetes complications • Diabetes can affect many parts of the body and is associated with serious complications, such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-limb amputation, among other conditions. • Heart disease, Heart attack and stroke • In 2003-2006, after adjusting for population age differences, cardiovascular disease death rates were about 1.7 times higher among adults aged 18 years or older with diagnosed diabetes than among adults without diagnosed diabetes. • In 2010, after adjusting for population age differences, hospitalization rates for heart attack were 1.8 times higher among adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes than among adults without diagnosed diabetes. • In 2010, after adjusting for population age differences, hospitalization rates for stroke were 1.5 times higher among adults with diagnosed diabetes aged 20 years or older compared to those without diagnosed diabetes. • blindness and eye Problems • In 2005-2008, of adults with diabetes aged 40 years or older, 4.2 million (28.5%) people had diabetic retinopathy, damage to the small blood vessels in the retina that may result in loss of vision. • In 2005-2008, of adults with diabetes aged 40 years or older, 655,000 (4.4%) had advanced diabetes retinopathy that could lead to severe vision loss. • Kidney disease • Diabetes was listed as the primary cause of kidney failure in 44% of all new cases in 2011. • In 2011, 49,677 people of all ages began treatment for kidney failure due to diabetes; and a total of 228,924 people of all ages with kidney failure were living on chronic dialysis or with a kidney transplant.
• amputations • In 2010, about 73,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed in adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes. • About 60% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations among people aged 20 years or older occur in people with diagnosed diabetes. • Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemic crisis • In 2011, about 282,000 emergency room visits for adults aged 18 years or older had hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) as the first-listed diagnosis and diabetes as another diagnosis. • In 2011, about 175,000 emergency room visits for people of all ages had hyperglycemic (high blood sugar levels) crisis as the first-listed diagnosis.
diabetes is a deadly disease • Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2010 based on the 69,071 death certificates in which diabetes was listed as the underlying cause of death. In 2010, diabetes was mentioned as a cause of death in a total of 234,051 death certificates. • Diabetes may be underreported as a cause of death. Studies have found that only about 35% to 40% of people with diabetes who died had diabetes listed anywhere on the death certificate and about 10% to 15% had it listed as the underlying cause of death.
the cost of diabetes • In 2012, the total cost of diabetes in the U.S. was $245 billion. • Of that, $176 billion accounted for direct medical costs. After adjusting for age and sex differences, average medical expenditures among people with diagnosed diabetes were 2.3 times higher than people without diabetes. • $69 billion was attributed to indirect costs (disability, work loss, premature death).
more about diabetes • Diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to create or effectively use its own insulin, which is produced by islet cells found in the pancreas. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels – providing energy to body cells and tissues. • Without insulin, the body’s cells would be starved, causing dehydration and destruction of body tissue. • people with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump to survive. • Many people with type 2 diabetes can control their blood glucose by following a healthy meal plan and a program of regular physical activity, losing excess weight, and taking medications. Medications for each individual with diabetes will often change during the course of the disease. Insulin also is commonly used to control blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes.

diabetes research institute The Best Hope for a Cure the Diabetes research Institute Foundation is the organization of choice for those who are serious, passionate and committed to curing diabetes. Its mission – to provide the Diabetes research Institute (DrI) with the funding necessary to cure diabetes now – is testament to the belief that tomorrow is not soon enough to cure those living with diabetes. the Diabetes research Institute at the university of miami miller School of medicine leads the world in curefocused research. As the largest and most comprehensive research center dedicated to curing diabetes, the DrI is aggressively working to develop a biological cure by restoring natural insulin production and normalizing blood sugar levels without imposing other risks. researchers have already shown that diabetes can be reversed through islet transplantation, with some study patients living without the need for insulin injections for more than a decade. the Institute is now building upon these promising outcomes by developing the dri bioHub, an integrated “mini organ” that mimics the native pancreas. the Biohub contains thousands of insulin-producing cells that sense blood sugar levels and produce the precise amount of insulin needed in real time. the Diabetes research Institute and Foundation were created for one reason – to cure diabetes – which is and will continue to be their singular focus until that goal is reached. For the millions of children and adults affected by diabetes, the Diabetes research Institute is the best hope for a cure. diabetes research institute Foundation 381 Park Avenue South, Suite 1118, new york, ny 10016 t: 212-888.2217 | F: 212-888.2219 | empireBall@drif.org
