BUILDING SCIENCES STUDIO
WHAT IS THE BUILDING SCIENCES STUDIO? The H&A Building Sciences Studio applies advanced analytical tools that help our clients make better design decisions. Our talented and dedicated staff delves into the physics behind the engineering to gain a deeper understanding of how a building can perform more efficiently.
WHY NO W?
The business of designing and constructing buildings has undergone dramatic change in the past decade. They must not only be inspiring and functional, they must meet a variety of important requirements related to longevity, energy-efficiency, occupant health, and sustainability. Meanwhile, intense pressure to reduce costs remains a factor. As newer materials and systems are integrated into buildings, it is ever more critical that the design team and owners have assurance that these systems will perform as expected. We in the building industry can no longer afford to rely on the old rules. Even the best industrystandard calculations cannot capture the entire range of physical phenomena that occur in buildings. A deeper level of analysis is required. By applying the advanced tools offered under the Building Sciences Studio umbrella, H&A Architects & Engineers can help our clients produce better performing, more efficient, and sustainable buildings in a cost effective and timely manner.

Our goal is to provide our clients the ability to ask the ‘What If?’ and ‘How?’ questions from the start of a project onward and to do so with results that can be counted on.

Through the pairing of Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling and Advanced Integrated Energy Simulation, H&A can easily communicate even the most complex physics to provide new and exciting possibilities in the built environment. Once almost exclusively limited to the aerospace and automotive industries, Computational Fluid Dynamics is now ready to serve the building industry through H&A. CFD uses numerical methods to model almost any phenomena related to fluid flow and heat and mass transfer. In the building industry, CFD analysis can be used to more accurately analyze interior conditions such as temperature, humidity, and air quality. In many cases CFD analysis can reduce the over-conservatism present in the traditional,

simplified approaches and significantly reduce first costs of HVAC systems. It can also provide a much higher degree of certainty that a new design approach or geometry will act as expected, thereby reducing risk and liability. CFD modeling is the best tool for modeling smoke migration and can significantly reduce the size of the smoke control systems in public buildings. It is also successfully applied to laboratory design, data center design, and external environmental flows.

Most design firms provide whole-building energy modeling toward the end of a project to determine a building’s relative energy and cost savings compared to a baseline project. But wouldn’t it be useful to know how a decision impacts energy usage and costs at the beginning of a project? The Building Sciences Studio creates energy models that offer simulations beyond this traditional approach. Simulation begins at the conceptual design stage, optimizing building orientation, envelope, shading, and HVAC systems. EN VELO PE OPTI M I ZATI ON AN D C OND ENSATI ON STUDI ES
Related to both energy modeling and CFD analysis, the Building Sciences Studio can provide the necessary analysis to determine the optimum insulation thickness and condensation resistance in wall, roof, and window assemblies.

Calculating the amount and quality of daylight throughout a complex building geometry requires intensive numerical analysis. The Building Sciences Studio can model the intensity and glare of daylight through windows and skylights throughout the day and year. The simulations can be performed iteratively to optimize glazing and shading structures, and can be used for documenting compliance to LEED BD+C Credit 8.1.
