Statment Of Intent My Theme is Relationships. I have chosen to do this theme as i will have such a wide variety of ideas which will be linked to relationships. However I have also decide to do this theme as I believe it is a great way to look in depth into the differences between the natural world and human world. And also how when both are used together to create a fusion between both worlds. After creating this website my aim is for people to be able to understand how humans benefit from nature however also destroy it. The use of people in my photo-shoots will be used for a variety of different reason for example to show how they live and benefit from their environment. While creating my website I hope to create a page on Artist Research, this page will contain research on other photographer who focus on the theme of relationships, this will help me gather different techniques and ideas for my photos which i will use in my website. I will also try to find photographers who study the differences in nature and the human world then i will add them in my artist research page and try to link my ideas with theirs. I hope to do lots of different photo-shoots based around my theme. Firstly I hope to capture photos around my area to help me discover the best scenes and place where i should have individual photo shoots based. Then i will carry out a photo-shoots focusing on artist interpretations to make sure I am able to use the techniques which i have hoped to use. Finally i will carry out three more photo-shoots all set in different settings which i have found in my first photo-shoot and use the technique from my artist interpretation to make them have the best possible outcome. Artists I’m looking at when studying this project are firstly, The Boyle Family, the Boyle family focus their photographs on the natural and human world aswell In the future I hope to do many interpretations on their work. I will use I variety of different Apertures when taking my photos this is to help the lens focus on the focus point. Also I will use different shutter speeds to help distort photos, I want to distort some photos to try and show how with the photos distorted can mean different meanings and send across different messages than if the photo was not distorted. I will do the majority of my editing in photoshop this is because there is such a wide variety of different techniques and effects to choose from, In photoshop i will change all basic features of the photo such as the brightness and the contrast this helps to make the photo more vibrant and give the photo a lighter or darker look. However I will use more technical techniques such as the distort filter called squeeze which squeeze a certain point in the photo more tight together. Doing this project I hope to be able to learn a range of new skills and techniques which I can use in other projects. Also I hope to learn about lots of different photographers which I will be able to refer back to in the future. Finally I will learn how to create my own website and be able to use my photograph and display them in an interactive way. I can picture my final format being mainly digital editing which will be done on photoshop, I will only use one A2 photo which will be framed, then I will have wire and flower wrapped around the frame, this will give across the message of how the natural flowers are being killed by the wire. This idea will be a metaphor of my theme then I hope to link the image inside the frame to my theme aswell.

Mind Map

Assignment 1 Main Aim of Photo-shoot: The main aim of this photo-shoot was to explore ideas and techniques I hope to use for my new theme and how I will apply them in future assignments. Date of photo-shoot: 8th of February. Shutter Speed range: I only used 1/40 Aperture range: 2.8 ISO: 400 Light source: From house lights Lamp Candle. Photo-shoot ideas: My photo-shoots ideas were to firstly capture the steps of how a cup of tea is made, the reason I decided to do this was to experiment on how well I would do when it came to capturing steps of things, which I would be able to to in future photo-shoots. My other idea was to try and photograph how a candle catches light from a match and how the wax would drip from the candle also how the flame went out. Photo-shoot Evaluation: I believe my photo-shoot went well as I experimented with different ideas and techniques, which I hope to use in the future, and the main aim of a mind map is to try and express different ideas. I also though the way I captured the photo of the tea was good by using a tripod. However I believe I could have arranged the mind map better also by taking a lot more photos and trying a lot more ideas. Also I should have used different shutter speeds and apertures when trying to capture the candles setting alight. For this photo-shoot I only used digital techniques such as changing saturations of the photos and also changing the clarity of the images. I do not think that this topic explores my theme as well as I wanted it to this was because I was focusing more on trying new ideas for future shoots however I linked my photo-shoot to my theme by using all different natural resources to make a cup of tea and how the man made mug is holding the natural final product. This could be taken further by using different manual edits and how I use this idea on separate pieces of paper and connect them trying to use the technique almost to show how each piece of paper is a different step. This idea I got the idea from the artist Jacob Baker which I wrote about in my Artist research page of my weebly website. I understand after doing this photo-shoot how often nature and man made items collide and fuse together.

Elinor Carucci

Elinor Carucci is a photography who was born on 11 june 1971 in Isreal. Elinors career started by serving two years for the Israeli Army where she was presented her BFA (Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design) After serving for the army Elinor Carucci moved to new york with her husband and two children. The first time Elinors photography was on her debut gallery in 1997 since then she has indavidual exibitions in London, Frankfurt, Prague and Jerusalem. Her work is brought by a variety of different places and people who are intrested in her work. Her work has featured all over the world and even been noticed in the New York Times Magazine which included eight pages of her work in 2005. Elinor Caruccis work is very obscure and leaves the viewer puzzled wondering why she has taken this photo. Elinor Carucci does a variety of different self portraits in which she uses her daughter shown in the photo on the right. The photos are very indavidual as they represent Elinor Caruccis family life and how times can be bad and also good. Elinor Carucci uses emotions very regularly to emphasize the feeling the model is feeling. Elinor Carrucis work uses very bland colour regularly, i believe she does this to make the audience focus all their attention and the model. Elinor Carruci also does this by doing extreme close-ups on the model and leaves a small amount of empty space in her photos.

This is one of Elinor Carruci photos, i espescially like this photo as it shows how Elinor Carruci makes her photos all different angles and also how she makes her photos personal and uses her own family as models. This photo is very good at representing relationships as the photo is using what looks like a mother and daughter and a shadow which splits them up. This shadow could represent a break up of the mother and daughter and could be resembled as a fall out or problem in the relationship. The fact the women is in the dark however the child is in the light gives the idea that the mother has done something wrong to the young girl and the young girl is effected by it. We can tell the girl is effected by it as the way the mother is holding the daughter shows is gentle and with care and the women is trying to make direct contact with the girl however the girl doesnot make contact back. However this photo could also show a girl who is ill or dying and the light is her going towards her death and the mum who is in the shadows is holding

The Boyle Family

The Boyle family is a group of different photographers who created a group located in London. The creators of the Boyle family was both Mark Boyle and Joan Hill. The Boyle family studied a wide variety of different themes including Nature and Man made. The Boyle family captured a lot of their photos based on differed textures such as the photo to the right. The photo on the right is taken of a mixture of a pavement and a road. This is a very easy photo to take however in this photo uses lots of different techniques such as the use of lines to divide different textures. The smaller photo which is the smaller photo next to the Boyle Family photo on the right, this is my artist interpratation of this artists photo. Instead of using two man-made textures I have used one man-made texture and one natural texture this way I have made my interpratation link to my Theme of the natural world linked with the human world. I like the way that The Boyle Family have used the yellow parking line to divide the two textures, this shows how it is manmade and showing the divide of the two texture. However for my one instead of the yellow line I just used to textures which are easily recognisable as man made or natural. To emphasize the message that the human world is over running nature, I added a gradient on it which made the side with the tiles darker than the side with the grass. I also slightly increased the hue and saturation of the patch of grass to make it look more healthy and bright.

Jacob Baker

When researching artists i came across an artist callec jacob Baker as soon as I saw his first photo it caught my eye. This was because I liked the way he used the technique of showing different steps in photographs. This inspired me to take a srries of photographs which showed the different steps of making a cup of tea, to make my idea slightly different to Jacob Bakers instead of putting all the steps in one single image, I split mine up by doing a different photo every step. I decided to do my steps on tea because tea is a drink made from all natural sources and also contains a process when making it. The images where all photoshopped and were also edited on camera raw.

My Interprataion

The Boyle Family

I decided to inturpret this photo as I like the way how the Boyle family use two complete different textures and split them in half. However instead of completely copying The boyle familys work I decided to try to link mine to my theme. To do this instead of using to man made texture which in this case are the road and the pavement. I decided to try and use a one natural texture and a man made texture. This gives the idea of how man made texture and items are begiining to over run the natural texturs and the natural world. To try and show that nature is being overun I used an effect on camera raw called the gradiational filter. this way the filter allows more light in on a certain part of the photo in this case in the bottom right corner.

Assignment 3 Main aim of Photo-shoot: the main of this photo-shoot was to try and use photographers techniques, which I have studied and use them, to create my own image using their techniques. Date of photo-shoot: 1st March Shutter speed range: 1/40 this shutter speed was used for the interpretation of Jacob Baker. 1/125 this shutter speed was used for the interpretation of the Boyle family. Aperture Range: 2.8 this aperture range was used for the interpretation of Jacob Baker. 5.6 this aperture range was used for the interpretation of the Boyle family. ISO: 400 this ISO was used for the interpretation of Jacob Baker. 360 this ISO was used for the interpretation of the Boyle family. Light source: Sunlight From house lights Lamp Candle Photo-shoot Ideas: My ideas for this photo-shoot where to use ideas and techniques from other photographers and use them to create my own image, which is slightly altered to the artist image. I altered the images by changing props and textures to make the photo more relevant to my selected theme. Photo-shoot evaluation: For this topic I have produced two interpretations of artist work, which I have studied. I have studied these artists to build on my techniques and photos and used them to create interpretations of the artists work. Techniques, which I have used during these photo-shoots, are changing different brightness’s of photos and making the saturations much higher on both photographers. Also using camera raw I have changed the clarity and other feature. On my interpretation of the Boyle Family photo I used a gradient effect which gradual increases the brightness and hue from one side of the image to the other. I believe this photo-shoot was successful as I was able to complete two different interpretations by using the photographer’s ideas and altering them slightly to create my own images which link to my theme. This work could have been taken further by doing a series of other interpretations and researching a few more artists who studied the theme relationships

This photo also relates to the theme I am focusing on, this is because it includes both manmade items and natural life. This photo portrays one side of the photo which is bright which has many flowers and bushes growing in the sun. Then on the other side of a brick wall, in the dark is peice of wood laying in the dark. The message I am trying to get forward is to show the divide between nature and the human world.

This photo shows both nature and man made This Photo emphasizes my point on how humans do not take care of the enviroment. products. In this photo i have tried to show the difference in nature and man made. As in This photo shows a dead flower next to a the background there is natural lighting shown train card that has been dumped. To show the message more clear in this photo, I made the from the candles, however the majority of lighting is coming from the bulb. To enhance photo completely black and white and then on photoshop I made the train card and the the photo I have decreased the brightness and increased the contrast. However to give flower in colour. This way the audience are the photo as much light and detail as possible striaght away attracted to these items. I have increased the clarity on camera raw. To make as much light come in the photo as possible I put the camera closer to the bulb therefore the side with the bulb is light and only glimmers of light can be seen from the candles. In photoshop I have also enhanced the orange colour, giving the whole photo an orange filter. The editing and brightness of the light also enhances the feeling of how the lighting fills up the darkness with lgiht whereas the candles only light up a small area of the photo

Assignment 4: Main aim of photoshoot: For this photoshoot I tried to capture the environment around where my school is and how nature is interfered by the human world. I tried to capture different photographs which explored both nature and man made objects. Date of photoshoot: 3rd March Shutter speed range: 1/100 to 1/200 Aperture Range: 2 to 9 ISO: 200 to 400 Light source: Sunlight Bulbs from classrooms Photoshoot Ideas: My ideas for this photo-shoot where to captures as many images as I could which show how the natural world and human world interfere with each other. Then I edited a hand full of selected photos taken and edit them and write about how the photos show the link between both worlds. For some I tried to show half of the camera lens to be nature and half to be man made. Photo-shoot evaluation: For this photo-shoot I have produced a series of photos, which show how the human world clashes with nature. To do so I have used a variety of techniques such as low shutter speeds and also low apertures, also edited them on photoshop by changing different features and using filters such as Wind and Spherize, Also for all the photos they have also been edited on camera raw. This photo-shoot was very successful as I was able to capture lots of different photos which I was able to pick from which gave me a very broad option to pick from, also I tried out different techniques which worked effectively. This work could be taken further by exploring different types of environments, which contain both nature and man-made objects. During this photo-shoot I tried to link some of my work to the artists the Boyle Family.

Section 1 I made up my mind to do my theme on relationships as it is great theme to express differeneces and how to compare to photos or two different ideas in one photo. I have explored my theme already by completeing three assignments and doing four photoshoots. Each photoshoot was different idea which were linked in with the idea of relationships. however I needed to make my theme more specific than just relationships therefor i made my theme the relationship between nature and man made. After researching the theme i found a variety of different photographers who specialize in relationships, an example of this would be Elinor Carruci. Her photos all represent the relationships of someone in her family with either another person or object. Also through research i found good ways to make my photo resemble my theme of nature and man-kind. Section 2 I have researched alot of different artist here are the artsist a have studyed in depth: Elinor Carruci Naomi Harris Tina Barney David Spero Ed ruscha The Boyle Family Schink I used the photographers I have research to help me develop my thoughts and ideas for my own photographs in a variety of different ways. I have used different techniques and edits, which the photographers have used, then slightly changed the techniques to make the work more individual. An example of this would be a photo, which the Boyle family published. These two photos show how I have slightly changed the way in which one of the photographers studies has portrayed their work. To do this I have used different layouts by changing the texture of the photo however still being able to make sure the relationships between nature and man-made is show.

Other factors which I have taken into consideration when doing the project would be history. I studied this to found out how through out time the world is becoming more and more open to global warming and how humans are killing the world .

Section 3 The photshoots I have completed so far are: Mind Map Photo-Shoot (Assignment 1) Conceptual Artist Photo Shoot (Assignment 3) 2nd Photo Shoot (Assignment 4) I have related all of these photo-shoots to my theme by making all of them different to each other however staying to the theme. The first assignment I used the relationship between how manmade objects such as a teapot are used with natural substances such as water to create a cup of tea. For assignment three I identified the theme by showing natural lighting compared to electricity and man made lighting. I also showed how natural lighting such as sunlight effects man made items. For the final photo shoot I have complete which is assignment four, I showed how nature is being destroyed by man made materials such as the image I used to compare with the boyle family’s work. The camera technique I have used so far are: Shutter Speed Aperture Exposing the camera to direct sunlight. Also using the cameras effects setting such as (Satin) The satin effect was used on the photo below.

To improve my photos I should make sure I take a bigger variety of photos this way I will have a wide variety of different photos to pick from, this means I will need to expand my photoshoots. I should also use a lot of different techniques to express the theme I want to express, this means I should look at my artists work more and look at different techniques they have used to make the photos better. I hope to make more of my photo edited like the photo below this photos technique was also a conceptual artist photo.

Section 4 An idea I could take further for my photography would be the photo above this could be taken further by trying different colour schemes and different photos. Also when I improve my photo-shoots I will have more photos so I can edit them all differently. I can use my photographer’s research and techniques to get a variety of different ideas which in the future I will be able to alter slightly and use them for my assignments. I believe I should improve all my photo-shoots slightly, this is because I can then have a broader range of photos to pick from and show in my contact sheets I have went to a lot of effort to get the best photos possible. Also It will make assignments easy in the future as I will be able to have a large variety of photos to choose from.

Reshoots

In my reshoots instead of using just props and the enviroment in my photos, I decided to use a model in my photo, this way I can metaphorically speak about how their facial expressions and body language help us understand what is happening in the photo. In this photo the model is holding the door and the flower, this shows how the model is trying to bring life of the flower into the abandoned house. The ambandoned house contained no signs of life. In this photo the plants on the right of the photo are covering the house this brings forward the message of how nature will always overun man-made items, the flower the model is holding could also show how the life inside the house is dead and extinct however the life outside the house is trying to come in and create life. I edited this photo by Lowering the brightness And making the contrast alot higher.

In this photo I tried to divide nature and man-made by doing I was able to show the differences. Firstly The enviroment is full of natural sources and to try and emphasize this divide I used a gradient tool on Camera Raw this made all of the nature more colour and stand out more than the house and model. The contrast in things inside and outside the house are completly different. Inside the house there is lots of rubble and writing on the walls, and also a noose hanging from the top which hangs down into the door way. Then outside there is just nature.

These photos are the opposite of the photos above, these photos show the model in her natural enviroment unlike the photos above the model is wearing all white this is to metophirically express her emotions and feelings, therefore i used white as white is used for feelings which resemble happiness and brightness. The white rose symbolises the way nature helps to brighten up the wolrd and how people can take it for granted. To edit these photos I used photoshop, on photoshop I increased the brightness and saturation to be more in comparison with the models mood. Then on camera raw I increased the clarity of all the photos and then made the focus point on all the photos on the model, so that she is in complete focus.

Assignment 6 Main aim of photoshoot: The main aim of this photoshoot was to broaden ideas used from the first photo-shoot. Therefore for this photo-shoot I used two different models and tried to show how they have a relationship with their environment. Date of photoshoot: 20th April Shutter speed range: 1/30 to 1/240 Aperture Range: 2 to 17 ISO: 100 Light source: Sunlight Camera Flash Photo-shoot Ideas: For this photo-shoot I tried to show how two models could express how they use and are brought up around their natural environment, also by using different body languages and face expressions to show this idea. When digitally editing this photo-shoot I tried to link the brightness and effects to the models body language and facial expressions. Photo-shoot evaluation: I produced a variety of new ideas and effects during this photo-shoot, I have produced how two models are brought up around their natural environment and also trying to discover the beauty of nature in photographs. I used a wide range of techniques doing this photo-shoot such as different shutter speeds and apertures and also using photoshop and camera raw to edit the image, I tried a new technique called the harris effect which worked very well and is displayed on my techniques page on my website. I believe this photo-shoot successfully linked with my theme as I showed how nature can make people happy without any man made objects.

My Final Piece Idea My final piece idea will try and emphasize the idea of how the human world is destroying nature. Therefore I captured a photo of a model in-front of a burnt down house. The model is holding a flower this is to bring forward a metaphorical message about how there is no signs of life around the house and how humans have killed of all the nature around, and the two flowers are the only natural source in the photo. To emphasize this I ajudst the brightness around the flower to a high level and then made the purple filter in the photo to also a high level this made the heads of the flowers stand out. To show how the house is a negative feature of this photograph I darkned the background and made all shadows very dark this include the window and the door ways. To try and get a wide frame and also to make the human and house look more effective I took this photo from a worms eye angle. The model was dressed in all black to show how all life is dead and extinct around the house, the black resembles death and non-excistance.

Techniques Cropping

Techniques Rotation

Techniques Repitition

Evalution I began to explore my chosen question which relates to the relationship between the natural world and the human world. My own ideas began to emerge when I started researching different artist who also have interests in the theme of relationships. My initial research gave me plenty of different ideas however the main one was on my reshoots I found that when I photographed a model in their natural environment it gave me many different ideas for my final piece. I sustain my investigation by making sure that I had a broad amount of photographs and ideas which I could choose from. I researched lots of different artist however focused on Elinor Curruci. She related to my choose question as I was able to link the way we both used a models body language and facial expression to put across a message also we both linked the models and the environment together by making the environment match their expressions. Researching these artist gave me lots of information such as different techniques and ideas for my chosen question. The artist where important to my design ideas as they broaden my techniques which I used in my ideas and design. I was most influenced by Elinor Curruci as her work inspired me to link my models and environments together and use them both to put across messages. For my final piece I have created a project which brings forward the message of how the human world is killing off nature. My final piece is an image of a young women standing outside a burnt down house holding a bright purple flower and another flower on the floor, these two flowers and the women are the only three life forms in the camera lens. Then I have scrathed over the three doorways writing words which express how nature is being treated by the human world. Then on the outside of the building I have wrote words about how nature is expressed when outside. The photograph has been framed and hexagonal wire has been put over the frame, the reasons I decided to do this for my final piecec was as it expressed the relationship between the natural world and the human wolrd. Firstly the flowers and women are in the photos to show how nature is still trying to fight, I increased the brightness and purple colouring around the flower head to express the feeling that the flowers are still full of life, then I darkened the house to almost black and white to show how it is died and been burnt down. I wrote in the doorways to bring forward the message of how the human world is killing nature and addd the wire over the frame to emphasize the feeling of being trapped. These ideas and techniques came out to be very successful as my main aim was to bring forward the message between the relationship which I believe worked very well, the techniques I used worked well with the idea as they created messages and helped bring forward the relationship between the two worlds. This work could be taken further by trying to expand the message by using more than one photograph and trying to use more manual techniques. This work links to the artist Elinor Currcuci as she uses livemlife forms to bring forward message by using emotions and techniques which I have done for my final piece. After doing this final piece I understand more about how using less techniques and not cramping one photo can have more of an effect.
