The story begins in a typical Midwestern way: with a teacher. Sally Nelson worked in a secondary school until she discovered her passion for jewelry. After convincing a bank to give her a $40,000 loan, she opened Exclusively Diamonds on the 4th floor of the historic Matt J. Graif building in downtown Mankato. Sallyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daughters, Betsy and Sarah, joined their mother in the jewelry business. Eventually, Betsy moved away and Sarah bought the store and moved it to its current location in the heart of Mankatoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shopping district where she still runs the store today.

With so much history in the Mankato area, Sarah Person’s deep love for the community is obvious. This, Person expresses with a great deal of civic involvement. “I believe in giving back, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because supporting the community helps make it a vibrant place to live,” said Person. Person encourages the staff to get involved within the community as well. “The people I’ve hired are very engaged, passionate, vibrant people that want to be a part of this community and truly believe it is their mission to be involved,” she said. The staff lends their time to a multitude of different community events throughout the year including: the Backpack Food Program’s Climb to Feed Kids, Zonta Style Show, Black and White Gala, March of Dimes Chef ’s Auction, Wired to the Heart, Macs Night, Knight’s Night, the American Red Cross’ Mankato’s Dancing with the Stars, and smaller charity events that they donate product to as well. This year, the store is excited to be part of the Exclusively Diamonds’ Dash 5k through the Kiwanis Holiday Lights in Sibley Park. All proceeds from the race will benefit the Mankato Family YMCA.

The store aligns itself with brands and designers that have the same integrity in product, craftsmanship and dedication to the industry as it does. “The brands we carry show who we are and help us sell jewelry that matches our standards,” she said. Brands like Simon G., who has a ceaseless passion for detail and offers some of the most innovative designs of today; Hearts on Fire, whose diamonds actually surpass industry standards by using the best technology available; as well as Rolex, whose name is synonymous with perfection and elegance, embody the same values that Exclusively Diamonds strives for every day. But the big names don’t just stop there; Exclusively Diamonds also carries the Naledi Collection, a brand out of Southern Africa, that gives back to their country by building water wells and roads in addition to providing HIV training whenever a piece is purchased from them. Martin Flyer, Levy Creations, Caro74, Sylvie Collection, Pandora and FOURKEEPS are just a few of the other top-of-the-industry names in the store. In addition, Exclusively Diamonds offers more than what is on the showroom floor. Custom work can be done for guests who would prefer to create their own jewelry. On top of that, customers have the satisfaction of selecting their own diamond to be placed in a piece of jewelry, and the store has some exciting changes to the way their customers can choose their diamond.

“Cut is what makes a diamond sparkle and what makes it so beautiful,” Person said. “We choose our diamonds by how light performs in the stone and how it looks to the naked eye. We now have a way for customers to do the same.” The store uses two kinds of technology to select diamonds. The first, Sarin technology, is a camera that generates 3D graphics and reports that measure the proportions of loose diamonds. The second is the American Gem Society’s Angular Spectrum Evaluation Technology (ASET), which measures the light performance and cut grade of diamonds. The store’s AGS Certified Gemologist Appraiser uses this technology weekly. Being able to offer this to customers will allow guests to feel confident that what they’re buying is what they’re actually getting. In addition, if their diamond is lost or stolen, the customer will know what quality to expect from an insurance replacement. “We are the only store in the area that can offer this light performance technology,” said Person. Exclusively Diamonds aims to have the best technology available so they can help customers with all of their jewelry needs. Three in-store goldsmiths work in a complete jewelry repair shop equipped with a laser welding machine. The laser welder is a highly concentrated light energy which welds metal to itself. The precision of the laser allows the goldsmiths to create seamless work zones and re-tip small diamonds, emeralds and soft stones without damage.

“It lets us perform work that we wouldn’t have been able to do in the past,” said Person. Technology is also available in the showroom. High definition, flat screen displays show product in exquisite detail and Apple iPads dot the countertops allowing the sales staff to instantly find any piece of jewelry even if it isn’t in stock. Exclusively Diamonds strives to be the best jeweler possible and to bring their guests the greatest customer experience. The staff, consisting of a top tier sales team as well as a repair department manager, controller, office manager, marketing director and three in-store goldsmiths, does everything in their power to assist each and every customer in a professional, friendly and helpful manner. For those who work at Exclusively Diamonds, they know they work in more than just the jewelry business. More importantly, they work in the relationship business.
