and international artists as two diverse bodies that should be handled differently. The Greek artists were open to respond with a broader variety of mediums (sculptural work, drawing, photograph, video or performance). The International artists were asked to propose their works via an online video submission, or correspond with a piece printed on paper that can be enclosed inside a manila envelope to be send via airmail at the exhibition space, in order to realize a project that would otherwise be impossible.

The “Manila envelope, pdf / mpeg” project functions as a part for the 2nd Mykonos Biennale titled “Antidote”. Its main venue, hosted at the annex of the Athens School of Fine arts located in the town of Mykonos. An activity than included participants from the “Video Graffiti” project of the “Antidote” 2nd Mykonos Biennale, presented in several site-specific locations in the town of Mykonos, the participants, a total of 25 Greek and international artists. The time and place it is hosted: during the first days of capital controls (July 2015) and its location, the island of Mykonos characterized for its luxury and restless spending, often turning into a decadent party scene. These diverse elements functioned as brackets to open a paragraph that would correspond, and form a visual language in order to bring together these extremities. In this period of capital controls, transaction can not flourish forcing us to consider Greek

The purpose of this activity is to function as an experimental platform, to encourage an open visual and conceptual dialogue regarding the broad theme of the Mykonos Biennale, the “Antidote” and it does not advice for a specific action towards an antidote. The final presentation is an apparatus working towards the realization of structurally different mediums in order to perform a blueprint on the artists’ mental states and the dialogue that was generated.

Charisia Chatz I Shall Please, 2015 Neon Lighting, 123 x 25 The word placēbō derives from the Late Latin phrase I shall please. The term placebo was first used in the late 18th century to describe any medicine adaptive to please rather than to benefit the patient. Placebo originated from Beecher’s observation of injured WWII soldiers believing to be injected with morphine when they were instead injected with saline solution. Their facial expressions showed relief from pain, and they behaved as if as in a trance. Today’s world is fixated on finding an escape from routine and while the pursuit of happiness is appeased by intoxication and satisfaction of the senses, it is ephemeral and thus happiness escapes us. A fundamental symptom of the 21st century is that people are becoming morematerialistic than spiritual; they have distanced themselves from genuine satisfaction – which derives from the primitive connection of human beings with nature. A mishmash of facts, such as consumerism, technology and materialistic possessions have influenced our lives and subsequently this constant distraction has driven people into a situation of becoming absent in their own lives. It’s all in our mind – and if we fortify our minds with knowledge, wisdom and experience and establish essential communication with our inner self and the people around us, we won’t need to use any kind

of substitute or else placebo. The deceitful placebo proves the vast potential of the human brain to heal itself, essentially to create the antidote. 29

‘The Open Body’ The world is in crisis. The physical matter, the space, our bodies and consequently our identity, is in crisis too. Art can play an essential role in transforming this crisis. From the union of healing, dance and collaborations on projects of socially engaged art, I generated a tool that can be freely appropriated by the participants and society.

The Open Body was that possible utopia: an essential manifestation of a culture. The Open Body was a live performance with a participating audience on a basketball court in New York. On May 8, 2013, fifty-four bodies were assembled, gathering participants from Clinton Hill and BedStuy’s communities. Al Pierre, a Brooklyn rapper, gave guidelines to generate collective action with the help of anaudio piece consisting of 9 songs and 9 movements: an exhortation to walk and perform the body. 43

MANILA / PDF, MPEG Parastoo Ahovan IRAN Parastoo Ahovan was born in 1980 Kermanshah, Iran. She studied MFA at Pratt Institute (2011-2012) and Graduated of MFA from Boston University in 2014. She has been showing her works in group and solo shows in countries such as: Iran, Turkey, India, Italy, Spain , UK, Greece and the US. P. Ahovan has participated in international art contests and symposiums. Most recently notable was her participation in the Venice biennial 2016. http://www.parastouahovan.com Stathis Alexopoulos GR Stathis Alexopoulos was born in Athens in 1976 where he lives and works. He studied sculpture at the School of Fine Arts Panormos Tinos, and the School of Fine Arts of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Fine and Applied Arts, where he graduated with distinction. One of his great interests is sculpture in public places. His works are at Municipalities of Greece, and at the Hellenic Air Force Academy. He has co-operated with companies and participated in their advertising campaigns (Red-Bull Helas, Vivartia, Militos publications, Forever, Olimpiakos BC). Moreover he has created works for night clubs in Athens (Plus X, Motel). He believes that contemporary sculpture should be based on the concrete values of classic sculpture, and that the shape and its dynamic are those which define a work of art and its meaning. He integrates the art of sculpture with the trends of contemporary design. He is interested in designing and creating useful objects, which still however remain works of art.His work is hosted in private collections and at selected shops in Greece and abroad, in the art-shops of

Lydia Andrioti is exploring representations of emotional places by unfolding visual vocabularies. She uses media incorporated within installations including: actions, re-enactments, video projections, sound, drawings, collages, photographs, sculptures, ready-mades, and she often utilizes site-specificity in her work. She graduated with honors from the Athens School of Fine Arts, BA (ASFA, 2009), attended Ecole Nationale Superièure des Beaux Arts in Paris (ENSBA, 2006) under the Erasmus I.K.Y. scholarship and graduated from the MFA program in New Media from Pratt Institute, NYC (2012). During her stay in New York she is engaged with theater scenery and collaborative performance, she is restoring the magnetic, video and TV works of Nam June Paik. She has worked with 2 of the founding members from the 60s avantgarde Judson Memorial Church events. With Phyllis Yampolski for the research of her activistic work at MacCarren Park at Lincoln Center and at the Preservation Community of the city of New York, and with Elaine Summers for the Kinetic Awareness and Skytime Projects. Since 2009 she has been monitoring curatorial

Manolis Babousis GR My work is concerned with memory, experience, loss, creation, the artist, the disintegration of the environment and with destruction. Here are some notes on my artworks, images and architectures, like Babou-city and Athena-city, places where I live and work. In 1968 I moved to Florence to study architecture. It was an era of intense questioning, of the student movement, the extra-parliamentary left and of artistic movements on the rise. In Florence an innovative architectural movement with utopian characteristics called Radical Architecture was evolving, exploring the boundaries between architecture and art. These are areas of thought that still interest me today. The photographer, the artist, according to one theory, is like a blind man who uses a stick to find his way, to find where to place his feet. His is cane his support, his medium, and it has ‘explorer’ written on it. My photographs confront a location and a part of my life, co-existing while waiting to be chosen, to acquire meaning. Many photographs were simply not taken. They stayed where they were. I just saw the wall behind which were lived

Charisia Chatz GR Charisia Chatz is an installation artist and curator of contemporary art and design. Her creative artwork has also expanded into the art directing sector and her experience based on museums, galleries and art institutions have eventually created a strong character around her work and aesthetic. Having obtained a BA degree in Fine Art Sculpture at the University of Brighton, UK and an MA degree in Curating Contemporary Art & Design at Kingston University in partnership with the Design Museum, London, UK, she has also followed a short course in Video Arts Production at the UCA, UK. Her diverse work experience ranges from museums like the Benaki Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art, to art institutions, such as the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art, the D.Daskalopoulos Collection, the NEON Organization, Athens, the Whitechapel Gallery, London, the International Festival of Digital Arts and New Media, and Absurdum Magazine, Athens. She has also participated as an installation artist, in projects like TEDx AUEB

Panos Charalambous GR Panos Charalambous was born 1957 in Arcania, he studied at the Athens School of fine arts. He lives and works in Athens as a professor of the school of fine arts. He is currently the dean of the Athens School of fine arts.

Maria Efstathiou GR Maria Efstathiou’s work deals with notions around extensive material manipulation through intricate handmade works inspired by natural phenomena, growth and unexpected scale. Although rarely visible as such, her practice is activated by the infinite potential of the drawing line as a principle, often taking the form of largescale paper wall pieces or environments. She primarily works with paper cut-outs, plaster, projections and book-binding. Efstathiou has taken part in various group exhibitions in England, Greece, Germany and China. She obtained a BA in Fine Art from the Athens School of Fine Arts and a MFA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London

Katerina Georgopoulou GR I am a multimedia artist and designer born in Athens and currently based in London. I studied Fine Arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts and Applied Imagination in the Creative Industries at Central Saint Martins in London. After a brief training in fashion design, he studies academic and technical drawing and in 1993 moves to Paris where he obtains a diploma in History of Art and Theatre. An internship at the National Theatre of la Comédie Française within the team of the head of the costume department Monsieur Renato Bianchi will permit his joining the team as textile supervisor for all the new productions of the 1998-1999 season. Follows a period where he will be working as an assistant and collaborator for costume design for theatre and opera in France Opéras nationaux de Paris, Lyon et Montpellier, Festival d’Aix en Provence, Théâtre du Chaillot, Théâtre des Célestins - and

abroad - Royal Opera House of Covent Garden, De Vlaamse Opera in Belgium, Teatro Verdi à Trieste in Italy. At the same time he studies “art embroidery” with Madame Josiane Leclerc, and starts designing limited editions of embroidered jewelry and accessories, as well as embroidered pieces of ceremonial clothing for babies and children, distributed exclusively at the Eleni Marneri creative Gallery in Athens. He continues to have season contracts with the Bastille National Opera house in Paris as costume supervisor, and in 2008 decides to dedicate himself entirely to the embroidery and the textile embellishment under the name of “Furor Brillante” - a shining furor - in order to defend his passion for the design of unique entirely hand made pieces, using the traditional techniques of the French luxury craftsmanship. The artistic work of Lucía Oceguera is a constantsearch for equilibrium — ideas that have been materialized thanks to a constant observation of her surroundings and the resulting exploration of concepts through the aid of different media. This Mexican artist observes the world and constantly plays with her latent speculations about life, intentionally finding new ways to interpret what she sees via experiments with various media techniquephotography, collage, installation and embroidery- all materials that she uses to establish a dialogue between herself and the world, inserting individual motifs into a larger oeuvre.“Close Encounters PT.1” (2010-1013) and “Close Encounters PT.2” (2014) are two series of works that exemplify not only how Lucía explores her ideas but also highlight her individualized artistic technique, combining the use of technology with crafting methods. By taking photographs, printing them over fabric and enriching them with hand-made embroidery while juxtaposing phrases that are captured on the image, Oceguera rescues these vignettes from oblivion. Words that were initially eloquent will continue this momentum through the passage of time, but will also adjust to different readings and situations. The possibility of change is paramount in her explorations, as her works are flexible discourses for the spectator, who must be endowed with an extreme curiosity (like the artist) to comprehend what faces them and find new

meaning. The work of Oceguera requires a thorough revisionist thought process to navigate societal intentions as well as our biases. What at first glance could seem too plain or simplistic is, in the end, a defiance to the eye of the spectator, an invitation to go beyond comfortable paradigms and reconsider stereotypes. Indeed, numerous artistic theories are manifested in Oceguera’s works. The “opposites” are often the protagonists that manifest themselves in diverse ways through the use of colors, concepts or shapes. For example, in the work “Quotient” ( 2014), David- the biblical king interpreted by Michelangelostands indifferent to Socrates: beauty versus intellect; physical power against wisdom. For the artist couples (both accidental and intentional) exist everywhere: intrinsic and unusual couples that simultaneously define and reinvent themselves. Moreover, the palette of colors —red, white, black and gold —are part of her vernacular to express ideas and are chosen precisely for their quality to personify the opposite. In this manner, gold most often denotes “value” but its identity can be ambiguous depending on its use. The same with red, as it can often suggest “love” just as it can suggest the total lack of romance; associations are unconstrained and infinite. Sarcasm is another constant, as humor lifts the gloomiest of circumstances. One can analyze this node nearly into incoherence - What is elegance? What is weakness? These conditions have produced an array of contradictions that I employ to create spaces between the two, ranging from the poetic to the political. She has been showing her work regularly in New York and Italy via solo and collaborative exhibitions. Mima Giannakakou Razelou GR Dimitra Giannakakou-Razelou “Mima” was born in Athens in 1981. In 2002 she entered the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASKT) and graduated in 2008 when she was awarded a degree in painting with honors. Her main thesis was in visual arts in her own conceptualized art form “Sculp-

ture of oil Colors”. She continued her postgraduate studies at the same school on a fellowship from the Institute of State Scholarships where she graduted with honors. From 2007 to 2015 she worked with the recognized sculptor Takis, as his student and as his private assistant. Since her early student years she participated in various group exhibitions in Europe. In 2006, while attending the Art School of the University Willem de Kooning Academie, under a scholarship from the Erasmus-Socrates program, her matrix animation work with the theme “Narration of life in the Universe” was exhibited on the façade of a downtown office Kpn building in Rotterdam which was desinged by the architect Renzo Piano. This animation among other similar projects is still exhibited to date. In 2010, she was awarded a prize from an exhibition-contest in Athens sponsored by Nestle on the theme “The true friendship concept”. From 2009 to 2014 she was teaching art to a municipal cultural organization for children aged 5 to 11 years old as well as in other art teaching activities in Greek public college. Most importantly she volunteered to give art therapy classes to psychiatric clinic patients of the PanHellenic associaiton of families for mental health. In addition she gave private lessons to students wanting to study art in Greek and international universities. Her work has been published to various newspapers, magazines and websites. She had two solo exchibitions, with the first hosted in the gallery of Els Hanappe in Athens and the second in the lobby of the Hilton hotel in Athens. She exhibits her art work in Art Galleries and Art Shops in Greece and her work has become an integral part of many private collections.

She founded and directs the “4Remedy” video art team with which she created the project “Color Remedy”for Mykonos Biennale 2015 with the theme “Antidote”. Some of her collaborations include Perpetual Art Machine [PAM], an interactive video installation and online web community, founded in 2005, of over 2000 members. She was video pioneer Nam June Paik’s assistant from 1997-2002, where she developed his monumental laser works, including the 75-foot waterfall Jacob’s Ladder for the S.R.Guggenheim museum in New York, Bilbao and Seoul and the 30 meterwide, award winning, Laser Waterscreen‚ permanent on the lake of the Olympic Park of Seoul Korea.
