FABRIK PARK /
transformation of Tobacco Factory Košice The Tobacco Factory dates back to the year 1851. The factory lost its purpose with the decline in the local tobacco industry however the reconstruction and transformation to a cultural center was a key stone in the success of the project - Košice - European Capital of Culture 2013.
05
Tabačka Kulturfabrik is now cultural scene, member of Trans Europe Halles, place where a close relationship between the community, visitors and the city is emphasized. At the start of my diploma theses interviews were held with the owners of the complex, government officials and the director of the cultural project. The most fitting design and approach in revising the area was regarded as “soft transformation”. However, reconstruction plans for the area were not solving the problem of complicated entrances, empty atria and the evasion of abandoned buildings. The new plan envisions the main entrances connecting every building of the Tobacco factory to the parks within the compound in an easy manner. In addition many novel domestic and leisure structures were devised. The different heights provided by the car garages, parks and various facades yield a playful and intriguing division of the space. The atria are accessible and opened to the outside courtyards joining the life of artists with the visitors of the cultural center.

GREEN LAY /
urban interior, KVP - Košice competition - 2nd place
15
The aim of the competition (Revitalization of damaged promenade) was to design a passage between apartment buildings at KVP quarter in Kosice. The area is absent of green zones, outdoor playgrounds and any recreational structures. Currently, the space is concrete and lacks “flavor”. The premise is to create a green space with a one line multifunctional furniture structure - green lay that runs alongside the main pedestrian path. The green lay consists of swings, benches, climbing walls, lights, flower pots and recycling bins. The green lay is continuous over the entire length of the path with seasonal shifts within the construct. In winter the former fountain, now basin, may be available for ice skating, whereas in summer the water ameliorates and adds a cooling touch to the concrete quarter. The project encompasses also the triangular empty spaces between present adjacent buildings, filling those with winter gardens helps to form projections outward from the novel path reaching and infusing both environments.

San Francisco Fire Department Headquarters

The idea of the proposal is to create a central fire station as a solid, “unbreakable” volume and at the same time remind the disaster of 1906. It’s situated in the center of the plot, as well as the park, where 3000 pieces of the cube got shattered. They create the memorial space and also the public space with museum, cafés, areas for sport activities and infocenter. As you walk through the park, the changing perspective changes the perception of the static volume. What looks solid from one side, looks completely shattered for another one. Interior space is as open as possible and everything is hidden in a modular system of the furniture. San Francisco can rely on the Men surrounded by the broken walls, strong yellow columns and the best equipment to ensure the safety of the city. Team : Matus Gibala, Lydia Pcolova , Katarina Sucikova

Tokyo Replay Center
29
The aim of this competition was to develop a new leisure center in central Tokyo. A complex with numerous private media rooms (similar to popular karaoke rooms) where groups of friends can go to see old anime, to watch classic films, or to play video games in a private setting where they can feel comfortable. The Tokyo Replay Center aspires to become a reference point in this culture of leisure, a must for “otaku” (people with a keen interest in manga, anime, and video games) and all people interested in technology. The site chosen for the competition is in a typically Japanese plot, 15m wide. The urban grid is made up of very narrow and long plots, together with high density of tokyo it forces most of the buildings to grow in height. Concept of the project is to create the game where it’s not possible to get bored. Cubes are falling down, creating loose structure with lot of outdoor spaces, places to interact with people or hide in your private area. Players can choose “difficulty level” of the game, depends on the mood for exploring the cube world and have fun while finding the right way or better finish the mission quickly. Everytime you come back, the new game is waiting for your mind to be exercised.

Humná/
Barns by Laborec, Humenné
35
The main objective of the idea is to improve the existing southern square in Humenne by the incorporation of small simple shaped buildings, reducing the oversized space and yielding novel functionality. Townhouses in the southern city center in Humenne are a means to bring livid domestic housing, cafés, restaurants and various small shops to an area with great potential and harnessing the local river - Laborec. Currently, the southern center is empty consisting of dated socialistic buildings and without a connection to nature. Revitalizing the existing structures can create new environmetns - green, urban, intimate, public… The cold and concrete area is fused with wooden elements on the green line to lighten and fill the space. The green line is stretching from the northern castle down to the Laborec and paints rooftops on its way. The parterre on the green line contains alternating functions as e.g. services, cafes, shops may offer a needed commercial boulevard.

Dance Center/
Anička Park, Košice
41
The Dance center is situated on the border between the multifunctional and recreational zone in the Anička Park in Košice. The concept connects nature with the aesthetics of motion and further isolates the busy highway in the west of the center. The contrast between the two main facades is marked by the impression of a great rock in the park. Transition from the urban traffic and the rough windowless outer facade of the complex into the livid green wedge full of trees is visible. The Dance center is composed of three volumes, all-encompassing different functions: 1) dancing school 2) café 3) a wellness center. The “zigzag” layout of the building separates the calm portion of the center from the dynamic space. Dance becomes public through the visibility of such events from the gallery of the café surrounded by crystalline area where the perpendicularity is not present.
