NEW WEXNER ART CENTER

After the success of the exhibition of the Wexner Center the Wexner family decided to establish a permanent display of their works they have collected. The Wexner’s would like to push Columbus to the forefront of the art scene. The hope to do so by educating the public about art and making it a part of their lives.

THE NEW WEXNER ART CENTER LYDIA WINCKOWSKI

The shape of the building derives from the continuous spiral circulation through the galleries. By creating a sculpture of the building itself it makes the art center a destination not only for the art work on the interior but also the sculpture of the building itself.

Program: the space should have both public and private spaces that can be connected but also need to be separated. A living space, eating area, and kitchen should be accessible to everyone in the home. Three bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a home office should be separated and meant for the main family that own the vacation home. A garden or courtyard to create a new space outside of the home. The in-law suite should have their own space for a private area but can share the public area of the home.

YEAR 2, AUTUMN 2014

FAMILY RETREAT

The Family Retreat provides an escape from the everyday distractions for the residents. It is usually occupied on a short-term basis. The twist is it must combine a family residence with the in-laws by creating a home that has togetherness and separateness.

The nine square grid creates a center square that is an open interior courtyard. From the main floor the courtyard connects them all through the view but also keeps them separate. The guest house is four the squares put together and cut into a nine square again to copy the main house. SECTION B SCALE 1/8” =1’

Program: the building should have six main spaces that break into smaller more specific spaces: exhibition/public tour area, archives/library area, conference center, administration, operations and facility management area, and exterior space. The exhibition space needs to include an entry area for 3,000 visitors a day with access to the museum shop and cafe. The orientation theater should be directly off the lobby and start the path through the galleries. A great hall is needed to support special events such as lectures and banquets. Dining cafeteria area should be provided to pull city workers into the space where they can take a break from their normal routine and give them a new place to grab lunch. The archives and research area need four main spaces: audio/ video research, research room, library support space, and document storage (staff only). The conference center houses two different functions, a semi private and secure private. The presidential suite and space for secret service as well as an area for the press and TV stations. A hotel that has 100 rooms for visitors travelling from afar. The auditorium for large conferences needs to hold up to 800 people. In the exterior spaces the Riverwalk should continue for pedestrians.

YEAR 3, AUTUMN 2015

BARACK OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY

After Barack Obama finishes his presidency term, a presidential library will be built in his adopted hometown of Chicago. The library is to honor, document and commemorate his presidency. The institution should reflect the president’s vision, legacy, milestones, political climate, role in the larger historical development of the native, as well as to portray his background, early years, family life, and other interests.

The main idea of the project is the continuation of the city grid. After getting the basic shape of the footprint each square was then broken up by an overlay of subsections that make up the city blocks and buildings. The building itself creates hierarchy by raising slowly from the two extended water ways.

Program: Develop a master plan for at least the south side of the Airport to include additional general aviation hangers, corporate hangars, educational facilities, hotel, and restaurant and to further develop facilities for a terminal, airport administration and flight education. The southwest quadrant of the site is not developed and needs a way to connect the airport to the community around it.

YEAR 3, SPRING 2016 IN-PROGRESS

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY AIRPORT

The Ohio State University Airport has been languishing for decades as the University debated whether to keep it as a resource or to sell the land for development. With a transformative gift from the Knowlton Foundation, the University is now willing to make a commitment to keeping and developing airport.

Terminal Education Corporate Hangar

The overall idea for the master plan is the progression of piers. Every program is separated to have its own drive creating the center of the pier. The terminal continues the pier and separation idea. On the south side of the terminal the service program is and the north side is the served space which has a larger square footage creating a more open space than many small rooms.
