Treatment Options for Lymphedema

Lymphedema in simple terms refers to swelling. This particular condition occurs when there is an excess accumulation of lymph fluid under the skin. There are many causes of this condition like injury, surgery, damage due to radiation therapy, etc. Lymphedema commonly affects the arms and legs. However, in some rare cases, this condition can also affect the genitals and chest. In many cases, lymphedema can lead to other skin diseases or infections too. The very first visible symptom of this condition is swelling. Additionally, it should be noted that there is no full-proof treatment for lymphedema but there are ways in which the swelling and discomfort can be reduced. Here are some treatment options which will control the symptoms and effects of lymphedema. •

Compression treatments

Lymphedema can lead to severe or mild swelling depending on the cause. In order to reduce the swelling, compression treatment is used. Compression treatment helps in controlling the swelling and also prevents the skin from developing scars. Bandages and elastic sleeves are primarily used. Bandages are wrapped on the affected area tightly and are kept loose towards the trunk to increase the flow of lymph. Similarly, even elastic sleeves are used to encourage the flow of lymph. •

Lymphatic massage

Lymphatic massage is widely used in cases of lymphedema. In lymphatic massage, a unique massage technique is used which leads to the flow of lymph. This treatment method is known to have several benefits. In this technique, skin movements play a very important role because they determine the movement of the excess lymph. With the help of the massage, the lymph vessels open up and gradually start moving. •

Exercises

Exercises also play a vital role in controlling the symptoms of lymphedema. However, it is better to decide on the exercises with the help of a professional. Commonly, a combination of exercises

are done to treat lymphedema. Generally, these exercises focus on flexibility, stretching and aerobics. In most cases, a proper exercise routine is fixed which is to be followed by the patient. Additionally, it is always advisable to train with a guide because only then the exercise routine will be regular and you will be able to track your improvement. •

Surgery

When no other ways work, surgery is also opted as one of the treatments. In case of serious lymphedema, surgery is the only option. Excess fluid is removed from the affected area but it still does not guarantee complete cure. Try a lymphedema lymphatic massage in San Diego and take a step towards curing your lymphedema.
