Organization and History

SAALM was organized on March 13, 1912, when a small group met at Carnegie Library Hall where they adopted a Constitution and By-Laws.

Mr. W.L. Her was elected as its rst president. Ethel Tunstall Drought (her portrait hangs in the museum’s stairwell) was the second president serving from 1913 to 1938 (25 years). She was known for her many Sunday Soirees presenting both visual and performing arts to San Antonio’s art enthusiasts.

Mrs. Drought chaired the Davis Competitions which proved to be signi cant cultural events in Texas during the formative years of the Art League. These competitions were made possible through the generosity of business entrepreneur and oilman Edgar B. Davis.

Dr. Bill Reaves authored a book in 1998 about Mr. Davis. SAALM contributed information about our permanent collection and the impact that the competitions had on early Texas art. The book highlights our permanent collection and has many articles and pictures of the collection.

The Art League’s rst purchase of art was “Sun & Mist” by Charlotte B. Coman of New York for $400. Subsequent purchases included “Portrait of a Boy” by Mac Lane and “The Irish Flats” by Jose Arpa.

The collection continues to grow as a result of the Onderdonk Purchase Prize awarded each year at the Juried Artist Exhibition in April. Traditionally, the Artist of the Year donates a piece to be included in the SAALM museum collection.

SAALM was responsible for founding the San Antonio Art Institute in 1926. The Institute met at the Witte Museum until 1942. The Institute was closed during World War II. After the war a generous donation from Marian Koogler McNay allowed the Art Institute to function and hold classes at the McNay.

The San Antonio Art League’s rst meeting place was the Carnegie Library Hall, then met at various homes, followed by the 2nd Floor Gallery at the Witte Museum (1926 to 1968). In 1968 we met at the Belgium Pavilion in Hemisfair Plaza. After Hemisfair closed, the Art League moved to the Koehler House at the bequest, of the Koehler Estate. In 1988 under the direction of President Ruth Baker, SAALM moved to 130 King W illiam, nally our own permanent home in the King W illiam Historic District. The King William District was declared a Cultural Art District in 2012.

The current museum was originally the carriage house for Dr. Alfred McDaniel’s home at 117 Madison Street located directly behind the museum. It was built in 1897.

In 1926 it was converted into a duplex where the doctor lived until 1931. Some time later it served as the residence of Dr. McDaniel’s son, Gibbs McDaniel and his family until 1949. It was then sold, remodeled and used as a chiropractic o ce by Dr. George J. Loften.

In 1970, Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Scheer came into possession of the property and transformed the one-time carriage house into a residence compatible with the area, obtaining much of the wood work and the staircase from the old Je erson Hotel.

The bay window is a Queen Anne with colored border glass, the front door has etched glass, the other two doors have Florentine Glass. The windows and the hardware for the doors and windows were obtained from 1890 properties. Half of the porch banisters were obtained from an 1897 house and the rest are reproductions of the same.

The Davis Gallery

The Amy Shelton and V.H. McNutt Educational Gallery for the Edgar B. Davis Collection of Texas Art opened in the fall of 2020. It was a long-time dream of the Art League to have a dedicated gallery space to show this wonderful collection of paintings and to share their extraordinary story. Our profound thanks to the McNutt Memorial Foundation for making this project possible.

Philanthropist and eccentric oil wildcatter, Edgar B. Davis worked with the San Antonio Art League to initiate a national art competition, o ering substantial cash prizes. This Texas Wild ower Competitive Exhibition would go on to attract many prominent artists, and is credited with nurturing the state’s emerging art community, as well as fueling a major regional movement.

The “Davis Competitions,” as they were known, helped to cement San Antonio’s reputation as an art center, a legacy that remains with the “River City” today. The shows generated a great deal of excitement in the area, helping to make celebrities of some of the artists who had already settled here and encouraging others to make San Antonio their home.

Over the three years that the wild ower competitions were held, more than 300 paintings were exhibited, and thousands of viewers saw the paintings at the Witte Museum and on tours throughout the state and in New York. Each year Davis would generously purchase the winning paintings and then donate them to the San Antonio Art League.

The paintings in the Art League’s Davis Gallery represent about half of its competition works, and the exhibit is rotated twice a year so that scholars and art lovers can have access to the entire collection.

The San Antonio Art League’s MEMBERS GALLERY

Opened in September 2017, the highly successful SAALM Members Gallery o ers a rare opportunity for visitors to view and purchase works from outstanding Art League member artists in a salon-style setting. The exhibiting group changes every three months, giving all SAALM artists the chance to exhibit their best work for show and sale.

This special gallery on the second oor is a unique concept. Member artists who apply to show here are chosen on a lottery system. Their work is self-juried and they have complete control over their own wall space and grouping. Every member artist, from unknown to nationally known, may show here. You’ll nd an ever- changing display of artwork in every price range and for every taste.

The San Antonio Art League’s SMALL WORKS GIFT SHOP

Our SAALM Small Works Gift Shop features artisan quality items you won’t nd in retail stores. Quality, not quantity, makes it easy to choose that special small artwork for every person and for every budget.

Each item is created individually. Jewelry components are hand-made by the artist, glass and clay works are hand-built and red, artisan cards are based on the artists’ original works. Items change often. The Small Works Gift Shop is located in the center gallery on the ground oor.

BY-LAWS OF THE SAN ANTONIO ART LEAGUE AND MUSEUM

Article I – NAME

The Association shall be called the “San Antonio Art League & Museum”.

Article II – PURPOSE

The purpose of the San Antonio Art League & Museum is to encourage and promote local and regional art by means of its collection, exhibitions, lectures and other related activities.

Article III – MEMBERSHIP

Section 3.1 – Eligibility

All persons are eligible to become members of the San Antonio Art League & Museum regardless of race, creed, or gender. All members are encouraged to participate in at least one fundraising event or make a contribution to the San Antonio Art League & Museum.

Section 3.2 – Categories of Membership

Membership in the San Antonio Art League & Museum may be obtained at the following levels by payment of the indicated annual dues:

Patron - Corporate/Business, $1,000.00 or more

Patron - Member, $500.00 or more

Sustaining - Corporate/Business, $500.00- 999.00

Sustaining - Member, $250.00-499.00

Supporting - Corporate/Business, $250.00 – 499.00

Supporting - Member, $100.00 – 249.00

Couple - $50.00 (Couple must reside at same address.)

Individual - $40.00

Student - $15.00 (Students must be enrolled full time in college or high school.)

Lifetime Member - $1,500.00

Honorary Life Member – $0.00 (Continuing membership awarded at the discretion of the Board of Directors)

Section 3.3 – Dues

1) The annual dues are payable June 1st. Members who fail to pay after receiving noti cation in June will be dropped from membership September 1st.

2) Dues of new members joining April 1st or later shall be applied to the following year.

3) All funds from dues and membership fees shall be deposited in a guaranteed account.

Section 3.4 – Member Privileges

A San Antonio Art League & Museum member shall receive noti cation of all events sponsored by the organization. A San Antonio Art League & Museum member in good standing receives a discounted entry fee for the San Antonio Art League Juried Exhibition. Members in good standing are eligible to participate in the Member’s Gallery and the Small Works Gallery.

Upon the death of a member a memorial may be authorized by the Board of Directors.

Article IV – OFFICERS

Section 4.1

– O cers

The San Antonio Art League & Museum shall have the following elected o cers:

1) President

2) First Vice President

3) Vice President for Development

4) Secretary

5) Treasurer

Section 4.2 – Election of O cers

At the Board of Directors meeting in January, a Nominating Committee which shall consist of four members plus a Chairperson will be selected to nominate candidates for the elective o ces for the following year. Members of the Nominating Committee shall not nominate themselves.

O cers shall be elected at the General Membership meeting in March. The Nominating Committee shall report its slate of nominees to the membership. Nominations may also be made from the oor following the report of the Nominating Committee. No one shall be nominated who has not given prior consent to serve.

Election shall be by ballot except where there is only one nominee for o ce, in which case the election may be by voice. Election shall be by simple majority vote.

Newly elected o cers shall be installed in May.

Section 4.3 – Term of O ce

O cers shall serve a one-year term, with no limitations on future terms.

Section 4.4 - Vacancies and Removal from O ce

Any O cer may be removed by a majority vote of the General Membership (excluding the O cer to be removed). Upon the death, removal, resignation, or incapacity of an O cer, the o ce shall be lled by the President, with the approval of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.

Section 4.5 – Duties

The duties of the O cers are as follows:

shall appoint the Chairperson of all standing committees, with the approval of the Executive Committee. The President shall be an ex o cio member of all committees except the Nominating committee.

The First Vice President shall serve as President Elect.

The Vice President for Development is responsible for providing leadership for the fundraising e orts of the San Antonio Art League & Museum and is responsible for the appropriate acknowledgement of all gifts and donations received by the organization.

The Secretary shall keep a record of the proceedings of the meetings of the San Antonio Art League & Museum, and of the Board of Directors, including an attendance record. The Secretary shall also keep a corrected copy of the by-laws of the San Antonio Art League & Museum.

The Treasurer shall collect, disburse and make periodic reports of all funds collected and disbursed in the name of the San Antonio Art League & Museum. The Treasurer shall deposit funds belonging to the San Antonio Art League & Museum in a bank designated by the Board of Directors. The Treasurer shall only make payments authorized by the Board of Directors.

Unless authorized by the Board of Directors, no o cer shall have any power or authority to bind the San Antonio Art League & Museum by any contract or engagement, to pledge its credit, or to render it liable pecuniarily for any purpose or in any amount.

ARTICLE V. BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Section 5.1 – Composition

The Board of Directors shall consist of all elected o cers of the San Antonio Art League & Museum, and the chairpersons of all standing committees. The President, Vice Presidents, Secretary, and Treasurer shall be the Executive Committee. The term of o ce shall be for, but not limited to, one year.

Section 5.2 – Duties

The Board of Directors shall have general supervision of the a airs of the San Antonio Art League & Museum between regular meetings and shall perform such duties as are speci ed in the by-laws.

Section 5.3 – Absences

President’s duties. The Executive Committee has the right to act in an emergency.

If any Director is absent from the Board of Directors meeting three consecutive times without being excused, they may be dropped, and the President shall appoint a replacement.

Section 5.4 – Executive Director

An executive director may be appointed by the President, with approval of

the Board. The role of the executive director is to assist the President in the development and implementation of strategic plans for the organization in a cost-e ective and time-e cient manner. The executive director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the organization, subject to the approval of the Board. This includes developing business plans, the management of budget and nancial assets in collaboration with the Treasurer, and management of physical resources and assets. The executive director is accountable to the President and reports to the Board on a regular basis. The term of the executive director shall be one year, renewable by action of the Board.

ARTICLE VI – COMMITTEES

Section 6.1 – Standing Committees

The San Antonio Art League & Museum shall have the following Standing Committees, with Chairpersons appointed by the President: Artist of the Year, Art Patron, Buildings and Grounds, Collections, Concepts and Community, Docents, Education, Historian, Hospitality, Invitational Exhibit, Juried Exhibition, Marketing, Members Gallery, Membership, Programs, Small Works Gallery

The President shall be noti ed of all committee meetings and may attend any meeting except the Nomination Committee.

The President shall have the authority to establish additional committees and appoint chairpersons as needed.

Section 6.2 – The Artist of the Year Committee

This committee shall be composed of the San Antonio Art League & Museum President, Chairperson for the Artist of the Year Committee and ve San Antonio Art League & Museum members at Large chosen by the Board of Directors. All persons on the committee must be members of the San Antonio Art League & Museum. A committee member may not be a nominee.

The purpose of the committee shall be to nominate candidates for the honor of San Antonio Art League & Museum Artist of the Year. All nominees shall have expressed a willingness to accept this honor. The nominations shall be submitted to a jury selected by the Chairperson of the Artist of the Year Committee. The jury shall be comprised of three professionals, (i.e., art curators of museums, art educators, and art critics). One of these may be a former Artist of the Year. The honoree shall be selected from the recommendations submitted by the Committee. Past winners of Artist of the Year shall not be considered. Those who were nominated but were not selected should not be considered the following year but may be considered again after one year.

Section 6.3 – Juried Exhibition Committee

The Chairperson of this committee shall not be eligible for an award. All members on the committee must be members of the San Antonio Art League & Museum.

The exhibition shall be open to all artists living within the State of Texas. Members are eligible regardless of distance. Outdoor (yard) sculptures may be entered by providing pictures of sculptures and dimensions. Computer enhanced photography will be considered. Computer enhanced photography must be designated as such.

Section 6.4 – Advisory Committee

An advisory committee shall be appointed each year and shall be composed of Past Presidents and members appointed by the current President. The purpose of the committee shall be to promote policies and measures advantageous to the San Antonio Art League & Museum. The immediate Past President shall serve as Chairperson of the Committee.

Article VII – MEETINGS

Section 7.1 – General Membership

The San Antonio Art League & Museum shall meet four times a year- in October, January, March & May, unless otherwise ordered by the Board of Directors.

Section 7.2 – Board of Directors

The Board of Directors shall normally meet once per month during the year, except for the months of August and December. The June board meeting shall be a joint meeting of in coming and out going Boards. Annual reports shall be made at the joint meeting.

Section 7.3 – Special Meetings

Special meetings of the San Antonio Art League & Museum may be called by the President or by the Board of Directors or by written request to the Board of Directors of ve members of the San Antonio Art League & Museum.

Section 7.4 – Actions without a Meeting

When necessary, actions of the Board of Directors and Standing Committees may be decided upon and taken by the President or committee Chairperson without a physical meeting if a majority of the members of the Board or committee provide their consent in writing or email or facsimile, clearly stating the action they are voting on.

Section 7.5 – Quorum

Seven members shall constitute a quorum of the Board of Directors; eighteen members shall constitute a quorum of the General Membership of the San Antonio Art League & Museum.

Section 7.6 – Parliamentary Procedure

The rules contained in Robert's Rules of Order Revised shall govern the San Antonio Art League & Museum meetings in all cases in which they are applicable and in which they are consistent with these by-laws. BY-LAWS

Article VIII – AMENDMENTS TO BY-LAWS

These by-laws may be amended by a two thirds vote of those present at a regular or special meeting, the proposed amendments having been read at the previous business meeting or mailed to each member of the San Antonio Art League & Museum at least one week prior to the day when they will be acted upon.

Amendment I

In the event of dissolution of the corporation, after payment of debts, any remaining assets shall be distributed to any other organization or organizations, each of which is itself exempt under the provisions of Section 1.501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Any dissolution of the corporation or dissolution of the San Antonio Art League & Museum’s collections must be approved at a meeting of the General Membership of the San Antonio Art League & Museum.

Article IX – INDEMNIFICATION

The San Antonio Art League & Museum shall indemnify any and all of the present or former members of the Board of Directors, as well as present or former o cers, against expenses actually and necessarily incurred by them in connection with the defense of any action, suit or proceeding in which they or any of them are made a part of parties by reason of being or having been directors or o cers of the San Antonio Art League & Museum, to the full extent permitted by Article 2.22A of the Texas Non Pro t Corporation Act or any corresponding statue having applicability hereto.

Article X – Onderdonk Prize Fund

The San Antonio Art League & Museum shall have an Agency Investment Fund with the San Antonio Area Foundation titled “The Onderdonk Purchase Prize Agency Investment Fund”. The proceeds from this fund (principal, interest, dividends) shall be used for the Onderdonk Purchase Prize at the annual San

Antonio Art League Juried Exhibition.

The funds shall be maintained by the San Antonio Area foundation, and the Board of Directors of the San Antonio Art League & Museum may make changes to the fund by unanimous vote.

Article XI – Ethel T. Drought Founders Award

This award for outstanding contribution to the Arts shall be presented to an art patron in May of each year. Nominations and selection shall be made by the Board of Directors no later than the January Meeting.

Article XII – Beth Eidelberg Award Fund

The San Antonio Art League & Museum shall have an Agency Investment Fund with the San Antonio Area Foundation titled “The Beth Eidelberg Water Media Award Agency Investment Fund”. The proceeds from this fund (principal, interest, dividends) shall be used to provide an annual award to a watercolor artist in honor of Beth Eidelberg.

The funds shall be maintained by the San Antonio Area foundation, and the Board of Directors of the San Antonio Art League & Museum may make changes to the fund by unanimous vote.
