Jay Spaziano Real Estate & Lifestyle Magazine Dear Readers, I hope that you have picked apples, baked your pies and are stocking up on wrapping paper. I’ve spent my career being intrigued by the emotional component of home buying and it never ceases to amaze me. I've witnessed people fall in love with certain elements of a property like the privacy, the floor plan, the natural light, the location and that was it. They didn’t need everything wrapped up in a bow and could think beyond the present. I know for my own home that it was the good energy I felt walking the land that compelled me to make the move. Recently I’ve had the privilege of both walking through and driving by several properties where the heart overtook the brain in the decision making and the results are unbelievable. The investments were significant but not necessarily financially driven. People invested in themselves, their families and what truly brings them joy every day. It’s great to see and makes sense. Why not start each day feeling a sense of warmth, security, or happiness? Think about some positive words associated with home: homecoming, homestretch, homeostasis, homerun (a little nod to our Phillies). Whatever you associate with the comforts of home, I truly wish you experience this holiday season. Hope you enjoy!

YOUR FRONT DOOR is so much more than just
an entry point to your home. It is the first thing friends and family see when they arrive. They are usually seen when driving or walking by. A front door should not only complement the interior and exterior of your home, but it is also a reflection of your personality and style. The color of a door has a profound impact on the way your home looks. With so many choices from warm rich wood stains to colorful painted doors, there is something for everyone. A popular trend is to paint the front door a vivid color that pops, however, the classics never go out of style.

J AY S PA Z I A N O R E A L E S TAT E
If you are thinking about updating your front door with new paint, be sure to consider ‘how do you use your front door?’ Do you leave it open or closed? If you leave it open, consider how the color looks with the interior of the house. If you keep it closed, then it’s not much of an issue. Also, consider the direction your house faces. Do you get full sun? If so, a dark paint color may get very hot to touch. You may want to consider a light to medium color. Painting your front door is a relatively low-cost update and a quick way to enhance your home’s curb appeal. Since we now know front door color choices reflect your personality and style, did you know that in certain cultures they have meaning? • Red is the most popular front door color. It’s stylish and classic but also bright and welcoming. •B lack is sophisticated, elegant, and timeless. It’s also the easiest to keep clean! • Green traditionally represents wealth, health, and safety but green is also a warm color, so it also represents peace and harmony too. • White means purity, tradition, and freshness. It can also represent that you are neat and organized. •B rown reflects warmth and stability. In some cultures, it can be an indication of privacy. •Y ellow means you are fun-loving and curious. It also signifies happiness, warmth, and reliability. • Orange will appeal to those with an appreciation for modern design. It also indicates that you are warm, playful, and full of energy. •B lue translates to cool, peaceful, and calm depending on the shade – the lighter the blue, the more relaxed; the darker the blue indicates power and stability. Your front door is the focal point for your home’s exterior color palette. It’s also the last thing someone sees when leaving your home. ●

MY 7-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER AND I had a girl’s night and decided to
make these super cute owl cupcakes. How difficult could it be? Recipes always come with beautiful photos of the end result, so we decided to get real and capture what it looks like after novice bakers give it a shot. The outcome… Well they taste good and look cute but I’m certainly not quitting my day job. I will say we had A LOT of fun and that is really what counts! ●
Easy Owl Cupcakes INGREDIENTS
INSTRUCTIONS
• 12 cupcakes
• Frost all cupcakes.
• 1 1/2 cup frosting
• S plit Oreos and use the cream side as "eyes" and place on to frosted cupcakes. Break the non-cream side Oreos in half to make "eyelids/eyebrows."
• 40 Oreos, golden or chocolate • 20 orange M&M's or Reese's Pieces for "beaks"
• P lace brown candies (Junior Mints, M&M's, Milk Duds... whatever you have) onto the cream side Oreos to make "pupils" and place the orange candy in to the frosting to make the owl's "beak.” Enjoy!
Pre-made, already frosted cupcakes work too if you are in a rush.

DHARMA BUMS is a cozy space with a nod to the past, a simpler time,
when people gathered to listen to music and read poetry over good food and drink. Their special spot rests on the bank of the Delaware River Canal, just a short walk from the Tohickon Creek Valley and High Rocks Vista. Located in a 19th century building that has a storied past as a hotel, a gathering place for the Black Cat Motorcycle Club, and even the watering hole for revolutionary patron Abbie Hoffman, whose famed Dump the Pump meetings took place within these very walls. Their inventive all-vegetarian food offerings combine the comforts of a neighborhood bar with the spice and influence of Far Eastern cuisine. This yin and yang approach produces an incredible array of inventive, yet approachable dishes and are only enhanced by craft beers, top wines, and exotic cocktails. Life on the Hill
ONCE AGAIN, one of our listings is the inspiration
for our History Around the Corner feature! 84 Red Hill Road, located in Pipersville, PA was owned by James A. Michener, a famous American writer who authored more than 40 novels. His works were mostly fiction that followed generations of families through historical events. He was born in 1907 and grew up in Doylestown after having been adopted by Mabel Michener, a Quaker widow who supported herself by taking in foster children, washing, and sewing. With an insatiable curiosity, he began hitchhiking at age 12 and by the time he was 20, he had visited almost every state. Michener attended Doylestown High School and then went on to attend Swarthmore College as a scholarship student, majoring in English and History and graduating with the highest honors. While at Swarthmore, he performed various jobs and acted in plays. At night, he worked at Swarthmore's Strath Haven Inn as a watchman

and switchboard operator. He spent summers working at a Philadelphia amusement park where he “saw carnival chicanery of all kinds.” After graduating from Swarthmore, he was awarded a scholarship for a study abroad program and enrolled at St. Andrews University, Scotland. While abroad he worked on cargo ships in the Mediterranean and earned British merchant marine status. After two years away, his roots brought him back to Bucks County where he taught at the George School. He went on to teach at other universities and worked as an editor for a textbook company. At the age of 35, Michener decided to join the US Navy at the start of World War II; his travels leading to the source of inspiration for many great works like Tales of the South Pacific and Hawaii. His combined experience and academic history gave him the rank of Lieutenant and role of Naval Historian. In his autobiography he explained that “fake” orders were
issued by a fellow officer, giving him the ability to travel anywhere in the South Pacific on “tours of inspection” further satisfying his wanderlust. At the age of 40 Michener completed his first novel, Tales of the South Pacific, which became a Pulitzer Prize winner. In 1949, Rodgers and Hammerstein adapted Michener’s book into the blockbuster Broadway musical South Pacific. Michener's share of the royalties from South Pacific now allowed him to write full time and pay for his house in Pipersville. He referred to his time spent in Pipersville as “life on the hill” where he rode his jeep, walked his dogs (on a path that still exists on the property!), planted trees to give away at Christmas, and participate in community events such as the art festival where he dressed as “Mich the Witch” and read fortunes. James Michener was married three times, the last for 39 years to Mari Yoriko Sabusawa, a second-generation Japanese American, who died in 1994. He also devoted much of his time to public service. Michener gave away more than $100 million to museums, schools, libraries, and other institutions, including the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown. He was even awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. From 1979 to 1983, he was a member of the Advisory Council to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), an experience that solidified his interest in the field, hence his novel Space published in 1982. He held other positions such as cultural ambassador to various countries and was a member of the advisory committee of the U.S. Postal Service and the International Broadcasting Board. He died in 1997 after carefully giving his fortune away. "The decent thing to do," he would say, "was get rid of some of this money." Michener pledged $5.5 million to The James A. Michener Art Museum, which opened in 1988. The museum, which was constructed from the remains of an old prison, houses permanent exhibits for the

Jay Spaziano is simply the best realtor in the area, period. We’ve known Jay and Gina for over twelve years, and they’ve helped us immeasurably with both a challenging sale and a complicated purchase – with lots of hunting and prospecting in between. Jay is always available, is always working hard for us, and always has encyclopedic knowledge of the market and all the players – even when we were just curious about possibilities. Jay puts a lot of effort into really understanding our wants and needs – even as they shift during the process – and is always very, very patient with us. He’s also a great listener, a fountain of good advice, and a real pleasure to work with and be around. He’s the best. Rebecca and Barclay K.
