Jay Spaziano Real Estate & Lifestyle Magazine Dear Readers,

I

T’S ALL ABOUT THE SMALL VICTORIES! At least this is what I’ve been telling

myself over the past few months. With so much negativity in the world it can be tough to look on the bright side. I’ve been hearing the word “resilience” a lot and really thinking about the human spirit. It’s truly an amazing thing to experience physical and emotional pain and be able to get up and try again and hope for a positive outcome. Then I visited a wonderful farm of solely rescue animals and realized that these animals have the same capability if not better. A beautiful Belgian horse was kept confined to a stall with no window for the majority of her life and here she is now basking in the sunshine with all of the hugs and human interaction she can handle, embracing her new life. There’s hope! One ray of sunshine in all of this craziness is that Bucks County Real Estate is offering the distance and fresh air that city folks are desperately needing. In fact, Jay has seen so many real estate cycles in his 43 year career that even he did not predict that a pandemic would give Bucks County the boost it needed! It makes sense—we are located between two major metropolitan areas, we offer lower taxes and compared to city sale prices, we are a bargain. Oh, and let’s not forget our incredible scenery: rolling hills, river views and a colorful landscape. Bring on fall!

I hope you enjoy!

Gathering Together: How our dining rooms can still bring us together, even if the holidays might look a little different this year.

A fall-themed table setting added a warm and welcoming feeling to our office conference table.

A

S THE START OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON APPROACHES AND THE COOLER WEATHER BEGINS TO SETTLE IN, there’s no better time than

now to start thinking about the festivities that go along with this time of year. If your house is typically the one that hosts family, friends and guests, then you’re likely used to the days before the holidays being filled with a whirlwind of preparations—everything from cleaning, to putting together the menu, to setting the dining room table. But it’s no secret that the celebratory events are going to be quite a bit different in these upcoming weeks than they’ve been before, as scaling down the size of our gatherings will be commonplace for this holiday season. However, that shouldn’t mean that the occasion has to be any less special! Because while you might not be planning a meal for a large number of guests or setting up additional tables to make extra room like you might normally have done, your dining room can still provide a wonderful place to enjoy the holidays, even when the gatherings are smaller. In fact, right now is the best time to appreciate the dining room for how much of a versatile space it can be. It’s the perfect way to show that you don’t have to host a large amount of people to make use of such a unique and beautiful room in your home. Formal or informal, your dining room can be as multi-purpose as you want it to be and can create a sense of togetherness no matter how small or grand the occasion. Arrange the chairs around the table for a more cozy, small setting, and enjoy your usual festive meal with your immediate family.

If you are not hosting a large amount of people and find that you have some extra time on your hands, make a homemade Thanksgiving center piece for your table. This could be a perfect family activity and maybe the start of a new family tradition! Why stop there? If you are having fun channeling your inner Martha Stewart, keep going and create your own homemade seating cards and utensil holders. Plenty of do it yourself instructions for Thanksgiving table decorations are available on Pinterest or Instagram. Here in the office we decided to try a few out and found that these instructions were easy and fun for all of us to do.

412 Brownsburg Road, Upper Makefield

Thanksgiving Centerpiece Vase Materials Needed: • Large glass vase with wide opening • 1 or 2 medium sized grapevine wreaths • S mall artificial seasonal fruit/vegetable filler (acorns, un-popped popcorn or small pine cones work too!) • T ealight candle holder (this depends on size of vase), and short or tall pillar candle. Instructions: • Unwind the vine that is wrapped around the wreath itself and cut through the wreath. By cutting it you can easily manipulate it to fit in the vase. How many wreaths you use will depend upon how full you want your vase to be and the size of the vase that you’ll be using. Layer into the bottom of the vase to your desired height. • F or large vases, place the tealight holder in upside down. This will serve as the stand for pillar candle. Depending on the size of your vase, you may not need to do this step. • Place the candle in the center of the vase on top of the holder. • Pour your seasonal filler of choice in the vase.

Milk House Farm Market

J

UST OFF WOODHILL ROAD IN UPPER MAKEFIELD, you will find a

little hidden treasure: Milk House Farm Market. Driving up Slack Road, the hill leads you to a quaint little shop with a yellow awning and baskets and tables filled with an abundance of top-quality produce. Slack Farm will be celebrating its 168th year of farming by the same family. Currently, Brenda Slack is the next generation to work the land. She established the Milk House Farm Market in 2007 and is taking the farm in a new direction— poultry and vegetable production. She is in the process of transitioning the farm from conventional to organic production and is the first generation to sell directly to the public. The market is housed in the old milk house of the dairy barn, that operated from 1850 to 1988.

At Milk House Farm, they honor the natural harvest cycles, giving you a wide variety of local in-season produce during their natural growing seasons. Fresh cut blooms abound from spring to fall along with delicious vegetables, herbs, fresh greens, eggs and organic chicken and duck. Try their Winter Squash and their wide array of fall and winter selections. And to accompany the crisp autumn air and colorful leaves, create the perfect seasonal setting with pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks and straw bales. Milk House Farm’s website offers a section detailing what is currently available in their market, and they also have a convenient “Coming Soon” section and a full seasonal schedule as well. This way, you are always up to date with what’s current and what you can look forward to as the seasons change! ●

IVEN THE LONG AND RICH HISTORY OF BUCKS COUNTY, it’s no surprise

that there is an abundance of chilling ghost stories all over the county. What better way to learn a little more and have some fun at the same time? Enjoy a meal at the Continental Tavern in downtown Yardley! Located at the corner of Main Street and Afton Avenue in Yardley Borough, in the heart of Yardley’s historical district, with its distinctive and large wrap-around porch and known for its friendly atmosphere. First licensed in 1864, its external appearance closely resembles the tavern’s appearance in the late 1800s. The Continental Tavern serves wickedly good food and drinks, or should we say spirits, along with tales of its history and its haunted history. Over the years, The Continental Tavern has been a restaurant, a tavern, a home, a hotel, a speakeasy and a way station for runaway slaves traveling on the Underground Railroad. The original structure was built prior to the American Revolution as an out building to the Thomas Yardley Estate. In 1875 a fire destroyed the building and it was rebuilt the same year as a three-story structure on the original foundation as a restaurant with shops and an 18-room hotel. For less than $1, visitors from Philadelphia would come and enjoy a “stay in the country”. Owner, Frank Lyons, a retired airline pilot, an American history enthusiast and historical re-enactor, has traced the property’s history back to the late 1700s. In 1805, it was sold and turned into a store and a residence. In the 1840s, the town library occupied the second floor. It also served as a temperance house. It was during this time that one of The Tavern’s alleged guests was the notorious John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. The Tavern was also home to possibly a murder or two within its lifetime. . .

In 2007 Lyons, his wife Patty and daughter Kelly purchased the property and set out to restore it. “During our renovations an inaccessible chamber was discovered under the kitchen . . . in the corner of the chamber was a stone tunnel, which ran deep into the ground. We began an archeological dig looking for evidence of the Underground Railroad. What we found so far is over 10,000 empty whiskey bottles from the Prohibition Era, as well as a number of artifacts from Yardley’s past.” Additional items

such as children’s toys, old license plates, tungsten light bulbs, an oil powered toaster, and old perfume bottles were also found. For the history lover, many of those bottles and artifacts are on display around the building. Among the items also found fueling a generation’s old tale of murder and mystery were a rusty old Smith and Wesson .32 caliber pistol (dating back to 1882), the silver metal clutch portion of a purse, and a corset complete with what appears to be bloody bullet holes. This fits with the story that was passed down of an attractive woman who lived on the 2nd floor who was shot and killed at The Tavern which was operating as a hotel in the 1890s. Rumor has it her spirit, complete in 18th century clothing, roams the 2nd floor. Another spirit – and not the liquid kind – making appearances on the 3rd floor is said to be a young fugitive slave boy named Thomas. He spent time there passing through The Tavern as a way station on the Underground Railroad. 26

The Tavern serves “old fashioned American tavern fare with a curiously modern accent,” Frank says. “We have a robust selection of standard tavern comfort foods, such as ribs, burgers, steaks and pot pies, which are prepared in our kitchen with the finest ingredients. Each week, however, our chefs plan unique specials which rival the best fine dining establishments in the county. There’s something for everyone.” The staff is willing to chat and share their spooky stories. The Tavern will be doing special presentations in October including a 30-minute documentary on its history and the paranormal discoveries. Most guests come for The Tavern’s award-winning food, but stay to hear more about the lore! ●
