What Does the Chamber Do? DIRECTORY The Lynden Chamber of Commerce does more than point visitors to the nearest eating establishment, store of their choice or best place to recreate (although they do all that stuff too). The chamber has put together a mixture of events and programs to help serve its members and the community at large. The Community Cashback program helps keep local dollars in the community. This buy-local program returns 5 percent of all money spent through it to local nonprofits. Chamber members also have the opportunity to network at events, get featured in brochures and visitor information outreach, sponsor events, share in member-to-member discounts, join the Community Directory listing, have access to educational programs and enjoy customer referrals and reduced participation fees in community events. For the community, the chamber is active in welcoming new residents with its Welkom Basket program and entertaining the entire region with its annual Farmers Day Parade, Northwest Raspberry Festival and Lighted Christmas Parade.

Recently, blueberries have come on stronger. Acreage is rising, and the Lynden area leads the state in this crop too. Strawberries, once dominant, still have a niche. Because of good soil and climate, and the well-honed skills of generations of families (Maberry, Enfield, Rader), Lynden continues to be known as a berry heaven. You can enjoy the summer harvest by buying at one of many berry stands or going to a field for U-pick. Strawberries ripen first in June. Raspberries follow in July and August while blueberries yield into September. Some favorite spots are Barbie’s Berries (384-1260), Bjornstad Farms (398-9874), McPhail Berry Farm (354-5936), Boxx Berry Farm (380-2699), Haugen’s Berries (354-4764) and Kamm Creek Farm (815-4360). A popular annual Farm & Food Finder guide to local outlets open to the public is available at the Lynden Chamber of Commerce and elsewhere. Agriculture is celebrated in the Farmers Day Parade on the first Saturday of June, while the Northwest Raspberry Festival each midJuly brings a ton of family fun to downtown Lynden including the serving of thousands of raspberry sundaes. The Lynden Farmers Market is set up at Fourth and Front streets downtown every Thursday afternoon from June to September.

A new Darigold milk-drying tower, completed in early 2013, has etched its place on the Lynden skyline. The plant takes milk from Whatcom County’s 100-plus dairy farms. More direct to the consumer, Edaleen Dairy has stores both in town (1011 E. Grover St.) and north at the processing site (9593 Guide Meridian Rd). Appel Farms west of Lynden (6605 Northwest Rd.) has added a farm store that features cheeses made right on site at the 500-cow dairy. For a delightful agri-tourism treat, check out BelleWood Acres apple farm and its new farm market, gift shop, distillery and bistro (6140 Guide Meridian Rd). ynden’s Front Street has undergone a number of changes recently, many of which highlight the city’s arts and entertainment offerings. From the Pioneer Museum, to the Jansen Art Center, to the Claire vg Thomas Theatre, there is plenty to choose from.

Just a few doors down from the Lynden Pioneer Museum is Lynden’s newest arts and entertainment outlet, the Jansen Art Center. The center opened in 2012 and added an entirely new feel to the already active art scene in Lynden. Long gone are the cobwebs of two buildings built in the early 1900s, now joined together as an anchor for historic Front Street in

downtown Lynden and an anchor for the entire Whatcom County art community. The Jansen Art Center is ultimately a one-stop place for art classes and rental of art studio space. Programs in music, painting, weaving, pottery, glass arts, children’s crafts, jewelry making, dance and much more (yoga, for example) will happen from the early morning to during the day for homeschool students and seniors, and after school and in the evening. Along with classes that may run weeks at a time or simply a few hours in a workshop setting, the “J” as its owners have now dubbed it, has also hosted an array of live musical events.

Another recent addition to the Lynden art scene is the Lynden Music Festival. Started five years ago, the festival offers a communitywide spectacle of music every fall. With venues throughout the town, including the “J”, local coffee shops, retail businesses, Judson Auditorium, churches and the Lynden Pioneer Museum, Lynden comes to life with the sounds of music through instrument and song. The Claire vg Thomas Theatre hosts multiple performances throughout the year, combining local theater groups from Lynden and surrounding cities for numerous diverse theater offerings throughout the year. Lynden Public Schools and Lynden Christian School have active, prolific drama departments, offering many opportunities for quality theater throughout the year. The Lynden Pioneer Museum adds its own mix of arts and entertainment, with an ever-changing display of life in the West. The museum features one of the world’s largest collections of antique buggies, along with plenty of displays detailing pioneer life. The museum also hosts a variety of themed events throughout the years.

he giving spirit of folks in Lynden can be seen from the bevy of churches located within town right through to the service clubs and organizations. The Mt. Baker Rotary group has been the most instrumental in helping shape the fortunes of those less fortunate in town, helping to build citywide facilities, including a Million Smiles Playground within the Lynden City Park, or athletic facilities at Lynden High School.

Along with the Rotary Club, two Kiwanis clubs and a Lions club also help keep up everything from local parades to student activities. Add in Toastmasters and other communitywide organizations to an active church membership that runs programs for the needy and there’s plenty of opportunities to serve, get involved and meet new people through Lynden’s active service clubs and organizations.

ith the natural environment engrossing visitors in every direction, there’s plenty of history, nature and pure fun to be had within the Lynden area too. Take a stroll through Lynden’s tree-lined trail system or experience the history of a pioneer homestead at Berthusen Park. Or, if you’d rather, take a short jaunt up Mount Baker for snow sports or head just a few minutes the opposite direction and enjoy water sports on Whatcom County’s bevy of lakes, rivers and Pacific Ocean bays. Within Lynden, the town offers the county’s premier kids’ playground, the community funded and built Million Smiles Playground. Located within Lynden City Park and adjacent to Fishtrap Creek, an ideal wading zone in warmer weather, the playground offers imaginative fun for toddlers through elementary school-aged children and the tallest outdoor slide in the region. Connected by the Jim Kaemingk Sr. trail to other parts of the town, simply hop on the paved path to wander along the creek, visiting Bender Fields — the home to Lynden’s organized youth and community sports, everything from kids’ soccer to city softball leagues — and the residential communities beyond. Berthusen Park, just minutes outside of town, offers playgrounds, fields, walking trails through the forest, a shotgun club, a remote-control 26

aircraft club and a fully restored pioneer barn on what was the Hans Berthusen 1863 homestead. The hours-worth of walking trails give visitors a chance to take in views of the native landscape, tuck close to a creek or even open up to the farmlands to the west. The 240-acre site is also the home to the region’s largest tractor show, which leaves antique steam engines and other attractions on site year-round. Beyond Lynden, enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities between Lynden and Mount Baker, from mountain biking to tubing to alpine hiking to downhill skiing. A trip west toward the saltwater shoreline presents another set of recreational choices, including kayaking, ocean fishing, clamming, hiking, birding and simply walking along the beach. With lakes peppering the county, from Bellingham to Lynden to the Mount Baker area, fishing, boating, paddleboarding and more become common summer events. Even a tubing trip down the Nooksack River isn’t far away. These recreational opportunities only scratch the surface of what Lynden has to offer, whether within its own town (some of the state’s best golf courses are found in and around Lynden) or by using Lynden as a launching point (such as to the San Juan Islands to the west or Canada just minutes to the north). Outdoor recreation is certainly alive in and around Lynden.

Schools & Education

ynden’s education system excels, both with academic prowess and diversity of options. Some of the best public and private K-12 schools in the state sit inside the city limits and one of the state’s top universities is just 20 miles outside of Lynden. And local schools know a thing or two about extra-curricular activities too, with both Lynden and Lynden Christian high schools winning multiple state titles in the last year and the Lynden football team, Lynden Christian girls basketball team and Lynden boys basketball team showcasing some of the best historic and current records in the state. And that doesn’t even mention the success of the local high school drama and music scene. The Lynden School District boasts three K-5 elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and a parent-partnership campus. With enrollment

of about 2,600 full-time equivalent students, the district has over 150 classroom teachers. Lynden Christian School offers a preschool-4 elementary school, 5-8 middle school and a high school, with all three buildings located on one campus in the heart of Lynden. With about 1,100 students, the school also has a Bellingham campus. Other private schools in the area include Ebenezer Christian School, located north of town and founded in 1910, Covenant Christian School, Cornerstone Christian School and many parents active in the 600-family Whatcom Homeschool Association. Western Washington University, Whatcom Community College and Bellingham Technical College are all located just minutes from Lynden in Bellingham.

wonderful program offered by the Lynden Chamber of Commerce is the Welkom Basket. This program was put in place to welcome new residents to town and is a great tool for them to get to know their new home. Each basket is filled with coupons and gifts from local businesses and is personally delivered to the residents by our wonderful Lynden Ambassadors, Ada Voskuilen and Virgi Diephuis. Ada and Virgi share about Lynden, and also take that time to get to know each new family, giving us the ability to discover why they moved here, and what they are looking for.

This program has proven to be an invaluable tool in helping us make the families feel welcome, and it is also the chance for the new residents to get to know Lynden and be reminded why this is such a great place to live. It also gives our members a chance to get information about their business out to the community in a fun and inviting way.
