2020 High School Graduation Keepsake
It’s a challenging time, especially for the class of 2020. The big moment you’ve been waiting 13 years for won’t be on a football field or packed into a gymnasium, with crowds and classmates cheering you on. That doesn’t make it any less of an accomplishment. Be proud of how far you’ve come, find new ways to celebrate with friends & family and create your own personal big moment.
Congratulations and best wishes to you!

Seniors reflect on four years of high school
We invited each of our local high schools to nominate one to three graduating seniors to look back on their high school experience and speak about graduating in this coronavirus-impacted Class of 2020. is is what they shared.
Andrew DeVries, Lynden Christian
He wants to remember all the little things, interactions and friendships
In Andrew DeVries’s re ection on his time at Lynden Christian High School, a trait many people might apply to him — being a star basketball player — doesn’t come up that much.
He sees other things.
“I want to remember all the little things I have experienced throughout high school. All the inside jokes, all the interactions in the halls, and the memories that sometimes go unnoticed,” he wrote. “ e little things are what I will take away because, to me, those are most important. e time it took, three extra seconds, to say hi to someone you don’t normally talk to in the halls and saw their face light up or the time you received encouragement randomly from a teacher or a fellow student — those types of things are small, but have meant the most to me throughout high school.”
He goes on:
“I have learned that everything in life has its ups and downs. Whether it is your focus in the classroom, relationships or life events, they all vary between going well and going poorly. I’ve greatly grown as a person, with the help of di erent mentors, while guring out how to handle the ups and downs.”
And more:
“To me, what lasting bonds stick out the most would be my relationships with the Lynden Christian faculty. I have been blessed with teachers who’ve become my friends and mentors. Having a friendship with the people in your

life that can understand where you are coming from and have experienced it themselves is something I forever will be grateful for.
Lynden Christian faculty does more than just teach, coach and lead — they help students develop into the people God has created them to be and that is why I will have lasting bonds with middle school and high school teachers, principles, administrators and coaches."
DeVries graduates with a 3.6 GPA. He was the senior class ASB representative. Yes, he acknowledges, he did have four years on the high school basketball team, but he also helped out in Uni ed basketball and soccer between schools.
He will attend Dordt University of Iowa in the fall and study education, with the opportunity to play on the men’s basketball team as well.
“I want to become a teacher because of the impact numerous teachers have had on me. My goal for my career is to be a role model and mentor to kids while helping them learn both inside and outside of the classroom. I think God has given me certain attributes to include and help others and I want to use those to bring glory to His name,” he wrote.

Jason Lee, Mount Baker
Athletics, good grades, student leadership — with Yale as his next step
Jason Lee is an athlete, and his experience playing football and basketball will be forever linked to his high school career. “ e bonds I formed with teammates and coaches are held dear to my heart as well as my time on the eld or court,” Lee said. Lee is Asian-American, one of the few at Mount Baker High School. He said the Baker community always made him feel welcome, but the feeling of cultural isolation was difcult to cope with until he learned to appreciate his culture.
roughout high school, Lee cultivated an excellent work ethic, and he said that any success he achieves in life is the product of that work ethic. Lee said he had to nd the courage to put himself
Kate Hansen, Lynden Christian
It was thoroughly disappointing, but Kate was also determined to heal. She had to go through a change of medication that did not have a negative e ect on her, giving her “brain fog.”
Kate Hansen feels that she was very loved and nurtured through her Lynden Christian School experience, and nothing can take that away from her. She too has a story to tell of some adversity, but through it all she can see the blessings and bene ts that came to her. As for COVID-19, it has taken away the highly-anticipated senior special experiences: trip/skip day, JSB and prom, and especially a fun graduation day. But Kate Hansen has this perspective:
“ rough these disappointments and trials, the Lynden Christian sta has been nothing short of helpful, loving, patient and understanding. Even several weeks after switching to online schooling, every teacher that I have has asked me and my classmates how we are doing both mentally and physically. ey make it obvious that they truly care about our well-being. ey have been understanding of our sadness about missing out on fun senior events, and
Football was the catalyst for his friendships
Coming out of Lynden High School, Steven DiLorenzo says he’s going to remember football the most and the relationships he built with coaches and teammates.
“I made some of my best friends in football,” DiLorenzo said. “ ey’re probably going to be my best friends for a while until they move away or I move away. We fought through so many things over the years.”
have been more lenient on the schoolwork since it is very stressful.”
In April of her junior year, Kate Hansen was playing on a club volleyball team when she got hit in the face with a volleyball, resulting in a major concussion. She was unable to attend classes for most of the rest of the school year and was worried she would never catch up. “Just moving my eyes to look at a book or an assignment would send jolts of pain to my head,” she wrote. Two things helped ease the pain: playing piano and making art. Still not fully recovered from the head injury six months later, she was unable to participate in volleyball her senior year.
She was dealing with pain, including migraines, for many months. “ e head injury that I endured is something I will never forget. It was a signi cant personal experience that has shaped me into a hard-working, determined person, who is passionate in being persevering no matter the circumstance. It also shaped me into being a compassionate, understanding person who empathizes with those who are in pain as well as those who struggle academically. Although this was a painful, long, journey, I am glad it has taught me these wonderful lessons.”
Hansen had Mrs. Kim Grycel as a coach or math teacher for many years, and the student is full of praise for this mentor to her:
“Mrs. Grycel portrayed the love of God in everything she’s involved in. She has been patient while coaching and teaching me, and she is a wonderful teacher. Even though I was never the star player on the volleyball team, Mrs. Grycel still treated me with the same love and care as she did
Steven DiLorenzo, Lynden
In his junior year DeLorenzo sustained a leg injury and went through surgery. He was told he might not be able to play sports again. at’s when DiLorenzo learned not to take anything for granted.
He gained a fresh appreciation for “just being able to go places and walk,” he said. “I couldn’t walk for three months. It was horrible.”
Almost exactly a year after he had been injured on the football eld, in September 2019 DiLorenzo played again in an LHS game against Steilacoom — and exploded. He broke the school’s rushing record for yards gained on the ground

out there in high school, and this led to a positive experience. He wraps up with a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average. He did football, basketball and track and eld. He served in student leadership all four years of high school and was the Associated Student Body president. In addition to athletics, Lee participated in Honor Society, peer mentoring and math club.
“ is led to many bonds with friends, teachers, and coaches that will hopefully last for many years to come,” Lee said. “I hope to revisit campus in the future and see old classmates at reunions and feel the same bond then.” is fall, Lee will attend Yale University in Connecticut to study computer science and to continue his football career.
“I’m excited to pursue a career in computer science. I also will be grinding it out in the weight room to try and have my football career at Yale be one of success,” Lee said.

Finishing her four years of high school on a computer was weird for Marina Ghaly. And the tradition of graduation and going on trips was something she had been looking forward to.
It all changed in the school shutdown from the COVID-19 pandemic. Ghaly said she was focused on academics during her time at Meridian and didn’t get involved with much outside of class, so that’s what she’ll take away the most from high school. She nishes with a 3.9 GPA.
Life lessons learned while in high school? at all relates to a car accident her family was in during her sophomore year.
“My mom ended up having brain damage and died six days later,” she said. “It was really hard on me. Most of that year was really hard, but I had to focus on my education to make her happy, as if she was still living here.”
Ghaly said she learned to not give up on herself during that time, along with the traditional school life lessons of not procrastinating and planning ahead. She was in the school’s Honors Society club her freshman and sophomore years. She said Mrs. Waterman, librarian and career counselor, is the faculty person she is going to remember most from Meridian.
Ghaly will be attending Western Washington University in the fall planning to study biology to possibly work in the medical or pharmaceutical elds.

to everyone else. In math whenever I had a hard time guring out a problem, she would sit with me patiently and explain it, not becoming easily frustrated. Mrs. Grycel has inspired me to be more like Jesus because she beautifully portrays his characteristics. Whether she knows it or not, Mrs. Grycel has helped my journey throughout high school and has caused me to be thankful I go to LC.”
She also was shaped by former LCHS teacher Mr. Keith Vander Laan and her World Issues and World View classes, giving her a deeper understanding of the Bible and a compassion for su ering and injustice.
“ I believe we can help anybody who is hurting because God is there for all who are hurting, and he doesn’t turn a blind eye towards them.”
Hansen will attend Trinity Western University in the fall and major in business administration with an emphasis on leadership and management. Growing up in a family that started its own construction business, she has seen how business can be for good, meeting needs in society.

years. For DiLorenzo, wrapping up high school in the middle of a pandemic has had its ups and downs.
“It’s kind of nice being home all the time, but not really at the same time,” he said. “It’s weird. I wish we could have a normal graduation because I’ve always dreamed of having that, but it is what it is.”

DiLorenzo plans to go to school locally, either at Whatcom Community College or Bellingham Technical College. On top of that, he hopes to play football across the border in the Canadian Junior Football League.

Hardev Saharan, Meridian
English isn’t his first language; soccer helped
Closing out high school online was its own challenge for Hardev Saharan. But he had already experienced a challenge in transferring from Squalicum High School to Meridian during his freshman year.
“Moving to a new place has always been a challenge for me because I’m not good at communicating with other people, so it’s hard for me to t in,” he said.
Saharan’s rst language isn’t English — it’s Punjabi. at contributed somewhat to the learning challenge, but he stayed after classes to get a better understanding of material.
Saharan said he learned to branch out and try new things during high school.
“Since I always have a hard time interacting with others, I was afraid to try new things,” Saharan said. “During my junior year I wanted to try something new, so I joined the Meridian soccer team and
that really improved my communication skills.”
He also learned to challenge himself academically, de nitely by taking AP statistics and pre-calculus his senior year. He has ended up with a 3.81 GPA.
Saharan said he’ll remember the volunteer work he did as part of the school’s Honors Society club.
Up next for Saharan is two years at Whatcom Community College. After that, he said, he plans to transfer to Western Washington University toward a goal of becoming a mechanical engineer.

Marianna MendozaJimenez, Lynden
Sports became her motivation for good grades
Finding the motivation to do homework is a struggle for any high school student.
Marianna Mendoza-Jimenez says she was no exception to that during her time at Lynden High School.
To combat that, Mendoza-Jimenez decided to look at things from a sports perspective. If she didn’t have the grades, she couldn’t participate.
“I learned really quickly that if you don’t do it, you won’t get anywhere in life,” she said. “My sophomore year I struggled a lot with it and started getting low grades. ey told us you can’t play sports if your grades aren’t good. My mindset was ‘Do you want to play sports or sit out and do nothing?’”
Mendoza-Jimenez said she’s going to remember sports the most from high school because of the passion she’s always had for them.
In addition to being a member of the wrestling and track teams, Mendoza-Jimenez was on the football team her senior year — the only LHS girls doing so — to get in shape for wrestling. Being a part of three di erent teams at the school brought a variety of friend-
Emma Dougan, Meridian
She has learned to take nothing for granted
Unlike most high school students, Emma Dougan chooses to see the positives in unexpectedly having to nish high school remotely.
“I think it’s going to prepare me for college better,” she said. “Just having to manage my time and not having a set schedule.”
Tricia Wager, Mount Baker

ships, but Mendoza-Jimenez also formed bonds with teachers in general and that was just as important to her.
“I had some pretty awesome teachers,” she said. “Mrs. Tetu and Mrs. Butenschoen, they’ve always been there for me and I feel like it’s really important to have a good teacher bond with at least one and I got really lucky with having two.”
Having to nish high school at home was something Mendoza-Jimenez ended up enjoying.
“I wasn’t super mad because I got to do homework in my bed,” she said. “Obviously, (not having a regular) graduation is a bummer, but I kind of liked it. I loved waking up at 9 o’clock and doing my homework in bed.”
Mendoza-Jimenez will be heading to Washington State University to study biology hoping to someday become an anesthesiologist.

Katlyn Neff, Lynden Academy
She wants to help people set goals and attain them
Katlyn Ne is gut-level honest that this is not how she wanted her Lynden Academy senior year to end.
“I had so many plans. ere’s been countless disappointments because of it all. is sucks,” she wrote.
But the experience also makes her realize “you don’t appreciate what you have until it’s gone” and “no one can change this situation, but as an individual I can change my attitude and choose to make the best of what’s going on around me.”
Katlyn wants to remember from high school how much she was able to accomplish when she put her mind to it: nishing a very long and hard project, nailing a test she feared she would fail, making an unhappy person smile.
“I know that there are lots more struggles ahead of me. I want to be able to remind myself that no matter how hard something seems, I can not only get through it but I can come out on top of it.”
Challenges have been met and overcome: “Over the years I’ve built myself up and have been making myself who I want to be, ultimately making myself happier and
giving myself a more positive outlook toward things going on around me.”
Just being a student at Lynden Academy taught her to organize her time, learn independently and be responsible for getting assignments completed and turned in on time, skills that can carry over beyond high school, Katlyn said.
Strongest bonds of friendship came through her participation in Lynden High School track and eld. “We laughed, cried and cheered for each other.” Katlyn was also in two LHS musical productions.
She plans to take classes at Bellingham Technical College to obtain a personal trainer’s certi cate to become a tness instructor. “I want to help people set goals and achieve them, help them on their journey to become healthier and happier in their own bodies. I want to be inspiring to other people, but also be inspired every day by people dedicated to wanting to improve themselves.”

Brianna Veenstra, Lynden Christian
Adjusting to a new town and school made her a stronger person
Many in the Class of 2020, it seems, had already faced personal challenge before the coronavirus arrived to disrupt the end of their high school careers this spring. So it was also for Brianna Veenstra, graduating from Lynden Christian. When she was 13, her dad passed away from leukemia. Shortly after, she and her mom and brother moved to Lynden.
Being part of the yearbook sta and also on the soccer, track and golf teams at Meridian kept Dougan plenty busy during her four years of attendance there, and leave her with many memories.
“I’m going to remember making friends I’ll have for the rest of my life and just going on fun adventures all the time,” Dougan said.
She said one thing she learned during high school was to never take anything for granted. Her mother, Carrie Dougan, passed in January 2017
after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She had been a teacher in the Meridian district for 24 years and was committed to education and supporting all youth activities. “When my mom passed away, that was the biggest challenge I think I’ll ever face,” Dougan said. “Finishing the rest of high school without her and just going through my hard classes and dances and everything without her being there.”
With a 3.9 GPA Dougan is headed to Boise State University in the fall. She’s undecided yet on what area of study to focus on.

Alexa Veldman, Cornerstone Christian
She will remember the ‘closeness’ of a class of just 9
When she looks back on her high school experience at Cornerstone Christian of Lynden, Alexa Veldman believes she will remember “the closeness of my class.
“Being in a grade of only nine students, we all knew each other pretty well. is was good and bad at times, but overall it was pretty fun,” she wrote. “Having such a small class and school community, I’ve built relationships with many classmates, teachers and coaches that were pretty valuable to me as I went through high school.”
Veldman played volleyball and basketball at Cornerstone all the way from elementary school through high school, and in those sports also built good relationships with her coaches and teammates.
After high school Veldman expects to work
Tricia Wager graduates from Mount Baker High School this year, and her biggest takeaway from her four years there is what her teachers gave her.
“ roughout high school I think one of the main things that I will most likely remember and want to remember are my teachers,” Wager said. “I feel as though my teachers put in their 110 percent all the time. ey taught me how to be determined and they taught me how to push myself through education.”
Wager faced a variety of challenges. She always had problems with stretching herself too thin and overcommitting. High school helped her learn to manage stress and prioritize her day-to-day activities with a positive attitude.
She said during the whirlwind of high school, she was transformed into the person she was meant to be.
“ e life lessons I learned in high school will be treasured forever,” Wager said. “I learned to be kind, humble, caring, positive, patient and giving. Both the social part of high school and the academic part of high school taught me valuable lessons of determination and patience. As I walk away from the recent four years of my life, I know I will always have the people I encountered during high school nearby.”

“We’ll see what happens!”
Wrapping up grade 12 during COVID-19 has been “interesting and at times pretty frustrating and disappointing,” but Alexa has been able to keep working through it all, and for that she is thankful. “It’s tough sometimes, but keeping things in perspective knowing that all things are in the Lord’s hands has been very comforting for me.”

Nathaniel Martens, Lynden Academy
High school has taught him practical skills to move on to his next steps
Nathaniel Martens is already stepping along toward his planned future. He is in the Running Start program of Whatcom Community College while wrapping up as a 4.0 student at Lynden Academy.
He is president of the Engineering Club at WCC where he will do one more year before transferring to the University of Washington to pursue a mechanical engineering degree. He has come to realize that even high school is as much about life lessons as it is about academics strictly.
“I was heartbroken that I had lost my Dad and now would lose my home. e three of us were mourning and learning how to live this di erent life. Lynden is a very tight-knit community and it was di cult to

“You have to learn to manage yourself and be responsible,” Martens wrote in an email. “I have also learned the value of hard work and pursuing your goals. High school has taught me practical skills such as time management, prioritizing and how to balance work, school and friends.”
e cancellation of all the standard end-ofyear activities for seniors
is “pretty disappointing,” Martens said. But he appreciates all the school and other e orts to try to make the 2020 class feel honored.
“COVID-19 has shaken this world up and there isn’t much that we can do about it. I think it is important to focus on the positive things in our lives and be grateful for what we do have in this time when we are often reminded of the things that we are missing out on.”
He wants to remember, most of all, fun times shared with friends. He is grateful for the guidance of teachers and family to help him steer through all the challenges of a heavy school load as well as volunteering, work and social life.
Nathaniel has been a volunteer at a local food bank for eight years. He has been a middle school youth group leader and a Whatcom County Youth Fair volunteer.

participated in volleyball, softball, soccer, FFA, community service, Honor Society, peer mentoring and pretty much anything she could get involved with. She valued the opportunity to try new things and to be part of everything, regardless of experience level.
Wager maintained a 3.8 grade-point-average through high school, and now she is eager to take her next step, she said. She will attend Bellingham Technical College this fall to pursue her goal of becoming a nurse.
Wager said it was dicult to have much of her senior year torn away due to the coronavirus pandemic, but she is thankful for what it taught her.
“Even though it was hard having an unexpected and isolated senior year, I’m grateful for the time that I had with my classmates and my teachers,” she said. “ e virus taught me to treasure my friends and family that much more! I couldn’t have gone through both high school and the virus without them.”
Wager said she knows that the Mount Baker community will always be there for her.
“I know that no matter where I go, I can always come back to Baker and feel at home,” she said.

Seniors Bryce VanBerkum and Adam Rodriguez both wanted to leave NVHS a better place. As ASB o cers together this past year, the two started an Instagram account — @NVHSo cial — to highlight every student at the school.
“Over the years of high school, we always saw a repeat of the same people over and over again,” Rodriguez said. “Some of the best voices are the quietest voices and we wanted to nd a way to get everyone involved.”
e pair had three main recurring weekly post topics, while also trying to keep the students informed of upcoming events, athletic and otherwise. ey aimed to include a photo of every student in the school at some point throughout the year. is e ort also included: Teacher Tuesday, for students to ask teachers fun questions in order to get to know them better; ink Back ursday, for sophomores, juniors and seniors to give advice to freshman; and Freshman Friday, letting a freshman highlight what they were doing in their rst year at the high school.
Bryce Van Berkum, Nooksack Valley
A schedule full of sports and ASB leadership taught work ethic and selfdiscipline
From focusing on sports and leadership during his four years at Nooksack Valley High School, Bryce Van Berkum gained a strong work ethic and found the discipline to carry him into his future.
Speci cally, Van Berkum lled his schedule beyond full every season.
He ran cross country in the fall, played basketball each winter and participated in track, golf or soccer in the spring.
“My two cross country coaches have probably taught me the most throughout high school outside of academics,” Van Berkum said of Jay Sloane and Madison Guillen.
“ ey were the ones who really believed in me and what I could do and taught me to believe in myself. I have learned from them what it is like to be disciplined and to commit 100 percent to what you are doing.”
In terms of leadership, Van Berkum was a class ofcer the past two years. As he graduates from NVHS now, he has been the ASB
president, a 3.8 GPA student and a member of the school environmental club.
Having COVID-19 impact his senior year made Van Berkum go out of his comfort zone to remote learn — and also to refocus.
“At rst thought one would think that being in this class of 2020 would be terrible: not getting to nish your senior year, not getting to walk at graduation, having to stay at home all this time, and having the threat of COVID-19. I believe our class will emerge as a group of survivors and become leaders in our communities that will be even greater because of what we are going through right now.

ways run farther, or push harder, or just give more than you think possible. “ Next year Van Berkum plans on attending the University of Washington to major in architecture. It’s an area of study he has always been interested in. e UW, and Seattle, now will be his dream destination.

Adam Rodriguez, Nooksack Valley He has learned to live by the words
‘Everything happens for a reason’
Cornerstone Christian School of Lynden hopes to have more of an actual ceremony later this summer honoring the 2020 high school graduating class of nine seniors. For now, last Friday there was a drive-by opportunity for people in their vehicles (below) to shout their congratulations to the graduates lined along the sidewalk of the Northwood Road school. One of the graduates (above) is Craig Vreugdenhil, who arrived in the truck he rebuilt as his senior project. It was a lot of work "from scratch," he said, from air-ride suspension to building the bed and toolbox to overall painting. It also contains a four-wheeler ramp and he will use it on the family farm near Sumas. (Calvin Bratt/Lynden Tribune )
If Adam Rodriguez is looking back to leave a life lesson for those behind him, it regards setbacks.
“One huge life lesson I have learned in high school is that everything happens for a reason,” Rodriguez said. “I would go as far as saying that I live by these words now. ... You understand that every setback is just a learning experience, so next time you can come back stronger than ever. You understand that the sad or bad times in life aren’t just there to hurt you, but to teach you something. If I could leave something to high schoolers, it would be this understanding.”
Rodriguez attended Nooksack Valley schools all the way from kindergarten through 12th grade. High school activities have included four years of soccer and being captain his senior year, serving as ASB vice president during senior year, National Honors Society and Environmentally Friendly Club. In his senior year he was president of Club de Lectura, which helps teach bilingual elementary students to read and write in Spanish. His GPA is 3.85.
Like most high school students, Rodriguez recognized challenges that came to him both academically and socially.
“On the academic side, I had to accept with myself that I wouldn’t always understand everything. I had to accept that I would struggle in some areas, but as long as I didn’t let those struggles hold me back, I would always be able to come back and learn from my mistakes.”
Rodriguez is thankful for all of the teachers he had, but he especially credits his Spanish teacher, Brooke Van Berkum, for advising him in life
situations. “Personally, I believe every sta and teacher at NVHS has helped me get to where I am. ey have all helped me get better, not only my academics, but myself as a person as well.” e next step for Rodriguez is attending the University of Washington to major in Law and Society Justice. He hopes to become a detective after nishing his education.
“I chose UW because I wanted a big university, but I wanted to stay relatively close to home so I could visit back often,” he said.
At the NVHS “virtual” graduation, this is part of what Rodriguez intends to say to his unique class impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic: “Dear fellow seniors, it is said that to appreciate the sun you have to know what rain is. Well, seniors, with everything going on recently, I believe we know what that rain is. But I also believe we will not let it keep us down. I’m sure we’ll learn from this. We’ll learn to appreciate every little moment and to give 100 percent of our e ort to everything we do, because we don’t know when we’ll be able to do it again. So go out there, conquer the world, reach your goals and remember, we can’t be stopped, because despite everything, we are still standing today.”

Now, moving on, she wants to remember the friendships made and the extracurricular activities she was able to be involved with at Lynden Christian. She believes her classes prepared her well for her future academically, but it will be the “positive relationships” she will remember
