Pops of color, by the sea Dodge home showcases colorful accents with seaside vistas By Brent Lindquist brent@lyndentribune.com
GOOSEBERRY POINT — When Bob and Lori Dodge set out to build a new seaside home near the Lummi Island ferry dock, they only had a few specifications in mind. “We wanted to live on the water,” Bob said, “somewhere near the water.” The Dodges also wanted a house that represents who they are. Previously, they had lived in Marysville for about 25 years. They moved to Ferndale 10 years ago and owned a house on Church Road. For the design of their new home, the Dodges turned to Lynden-based architect Jerry Roetcisoender of JWR Design. “Jerry was a really good architect who listened to everything we wanted,” Bob said. Part of making the home their own meant making sure of easy access to the home’s main floor. “We’re not quite to retirement, but we Continued on page C4

The orange pops of color throughout the Dodges' home were inspired by this sink, which Bob purchased before the home was even conceptualized. The color scheme evolved from there. (Ashley Hiruko/Lynden Tribune) will be,” Lori said. “So we wanted everything for ourselves to be on one floor. We didn’t want steps coming into the house, from the garage or the front door.” The house was designed to be as maintenance-free as possible, Bob said, from the materials chosen to the elements of design. The yard will not feature grass
to be mowed, and the outer materials are less likely to wear with time. The front door is extra wide in order to accommodate aging relatives who may need to come to stay in the basement’s guest rooms. The main floor, however, is their own, with high ceilings making it feel even larg-
er than it is. “We wanted to live on one floor,” Bob said. “And we wanted to downscale from our other house. It was over 3,400 square feet. This whole house is 2,650, with 1,600 on the main floor.” The new house is a departure from their previous one in more ways than just
square footage, however. The old house was more formal, and the Dodges wanted something more casual, “beachy” and contemporary. “Our style is really eclectic,” Bob said. “We have a lot of old pieces, we have new Continued on page C6

We’re trying to go a little bit more contemporary.” The living room and kitchen are in one large room, comprising the house’s “main event,” of sorts. The floor also in-
cludes a “multi-purpose” room, which contains their washer and dryer, as well as office supplies and other sundries. Lori refers to it as a kind of butler’s closet. Its ceilings are high, just like the main room’s.
“I wanted everything as high as we could get it,” Bob said. Throughout the home, flashes of orange provide an accent to the various shades of brown that define the walls.
Those colors were inspired by one single piece, which Bob purchased before they even had any plan for the house. “If you look at the sink, we designed the bathroom around that sink,” Lori said.

Fall Home & Garden The wall color of the powder room was inspired by that basin sink, and the rest of the accents came from that inspiration as well. “I wanted a fun color,” Lori said. “I wanted fun in the house. Not the whole house, but I wanted at least a couple of rooms to pop, and those definitely do pop.” The paint, appropriately named Jalapeño, came from Sherwin-Williams. The color, and some variations on it, is present throughout the home on walls, towels and other spots. The house has a subtle nautical theme throughout, highlighted by the hooks in the multi-purpose room and bathroom. They’re actually small cleats like one might see on a waterfront. The Dodges spray-painted them black and use them to hang coats and towels. Spectrum Surfaces did the counter work throughout the home, including the Cambria countertops on the kitchen island. The Dodges chose this design because it looks like sand. Most of the floors are tiled, but the carpeting in the master bedroom, downstairs and on the stairs themselves also resemble a sandy beach, in keeping with the nautical theme. Continued on page C9

Fall Home & Garden Bob and Lori wanted the bathroom to have the feel of a spa, so they chose a walkin shower. Connected to the bathroom is a large walk-in closet. In order to maximize the space there, they chose pocket doors that retract into the doorframe. The home features ductless heating, but Lori said their architect helped make the home in such a way that it keeps the temperature manageable without much use of the heating and cooling systems. “It stays pretty much between 70 and 72 degrees upstairs in our house,” Lori said. “It just stays there. Seventy-two is pretty much it. Every once in a while it goes down to 70. We had a builder who did a really good job at the things you don’t see.” That general contractor was Agate Bay Construction of Bellingham. The water view begins at the front door, and it widens considerably moving closer to the back deck. Lummi Island is located just across the water, and Orcas is a little farther out. In the distance, Vancouver Island can be seen, along with Cherry Point and Sandy Point. Down below the deck the backyard leads to the water's edge. “There will be no grass in the yard,” Continued on page C11

Fall Home & Garden Bob said. “We’re doing more natural, native-type plants.” Lori said they plan to put a gas-burning pit in the backyard, and maybe even a hammock. Their seaside home was designed to be a reflection of their own style, which is evident throughout. Lori stained the boards and soffits affixed to the exterior of the home herself, and the Dodges did the interior painting themselves. Buying local also was important. Everything in their home was purchased locally except for the deck railing, which came from Canada. The cabinets are from Interior Doors, and the appliances from Judd & Black. The stones that decorate the front yard are hyper-local; they were discovered when the home excavation was being done. In the future, Bob and Lori plan to complete the backyard and add a fireplace to the living room. The Dodges broke ground on the property last August and moved into their new house about four months ago, and thus far it has met their hopes and expectations of being a little eclectic, a little nautical and very much them. “We wanted something different,” Bob said.

Fall Home & Garden
Fall is ideal time for tree planting — do it correctly Gardening expert Melinda Myers advises
The Greenwell water saver can help a young tree get started. (Courtesy photo)
Whether planting a tree to add seasonal beauty, grow backyard fruit, provide a bit of shade or reduce energy costs, it’s a big upfront investment. Make the most of your money spent by giving your tree its best chance at survival with proper planting and care. Fall is a great time to plant trees. Cooler air temperatures make it less stressful on newly planted trees and the gardeners planting them. Select a tree suited to the growing conditions. Make sure it tolerates the sunlight, soil and temperature extremes. Check the tag for the mature height and spread. You’ll have a better-looking plant that always fits the space with minimal pruning. Plant it correctly to insure the tree thrives for the years to come. Dig a saucer shaped hole three to five times wider than the root ball. It should only be as deep as the distance from the root flare to
the bottom of the root ball. The root flare, where the roots bend away from the trunk, should always be at or slightly above the soil surface. Set the tree in the hole, then peel back and cut away any burlap and wire cages. These can eventually constrict root growth. Roughen the sides of the hole and backfill with the existing soil. Water thoroughly to moisten the roots and surrounding soil. Continue to water thoroughly whenever the top few inches of soil are crumbly and moist. Proper watering, especially during the first two years, is critical for establishing trees. Watering thoroughly as needed encourages deep roots and a more drought-tolerant and pest-resistant tree. You can make the job easier with a watering aid like GreenWell water saver (greenwellwatersavers.com). This contains and concentrates the water where it is needed, acting as an insurance policy for your tree during the critical root establishment phase. The GreenWell also holds the mulch in place and prevents weed whips
and mowers from damaging your tree. Be sure to mulch the soil surface with a two- to three-inch layer of woodchips or shredded bark to conserve water, suppress weeds and improve the soil as it decomposes. Pull the mulch back from the trunk of the tree to avoid disease problems. Remove any tags that can eventually girdle the tree and prune out any broken or rubbing branches. Wait a year to fertilize and two years, once the tree is established, for additional pruning. Continue providing tender loving care for at least the first two years. Make regular checkups, prune to create a strong structure, and keep grass, weeds and lawn care equipment away from the trunk throughout the lifetime of your tree. Your efforts will be rewarded with years of beauty, shade and possibly bushels of fresh fruit. Ashes to beauty Randy and Patti Assink rebuild anew after fire ruined their old house By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — The date that changed everything is fixed firmly in Randy and Patti Assink’s mind: March 24, 2016. They had been living since 2002 in their “old but very well built” house at the corner of West Pole and Woodlyn roads. They had restored the original 1931 hardwood floors, they had finished the basement into a favorite gathering area, and they still had a few more improvement ideas in mind for this beloved relic. But when Randy walked back toward the house from his woodshop on that March day, he saw smoke and flames coming from the upstairs windows. Cars had already stopped along the road to help out. 911 was called, and firefighters were on scene as quickly as could be expected. But by the time the fire was beaten down, the upstairs of the house was clearly a loss and there was smoke and water damage on the main floor. At first, while living in space offered by others, the Assinks thought they would be rebuilding the old house. But it didn’t take long for insurance experts to say Continued on page C16

It was a classic old beauty that the Assinks lost to fire, but they gained a great new replacement built to fit their needs. (Courtesy photo; Calvin Bratt/Lynden Tribune) the best choice was to entirely take the structure down and begin anew. (The fire source was determined to be an electrical outlet). At the time two of their four children were living with them at home, with their youngest, Lucas, still in high school. The Assinks say Paul Kenner of Snapper Shuler Kenner Insurance was excel-
lent with them through this time of some difficult decisions. Their coverage was good, and it only made sense — although it was hard to see — for their old house to be demolished. “For the kids, a lot of their growing up was here,” Patti said. And so a new house it would be.
Your Custom Cabinet Shop, Serving Bellingham and Northwest Washington Since 1994.
From scratch The Assinks felt plenty of support in the new house planning process from their extended families and friends of church and school. Everyone pitched in. Jerry Roetcisoender was hired as the designer and Mark Kaptein as the builder. “We also bounced almost everything off my parents,” Patti said. That would be
the lifetime practical input and good connections of Alvin and Carole Starkenburg. Patti found a floor plan she liked on Pinterest, although it would definitely need to be scaled down for them. Roetcisoender worked from that. The house ended up being 3,150 square feet on two Continued on page C18

floors. They did not want to be obsessive about details, and they were open to the advice given both by the professionals and their peers. However, there were two “must have” elements for them from the start. First, the house had to have a large “great room” that blended kitchen, dining, lounging — the place where they would be spending most of their family time and doing any hosting. It is about 812 square feet. And second as a priority, very close by would have to be Patti’s own sewing room. She admits she was “tired of the mess (she created) in the family room.” Patti is the lead person when it comes to costuming for the two Lynden Christian High School drama productions each year. When it is down to the wire for performances, Patti will be in her sewing room almost continuously, Randy said. (And stage props fill one of the Assinks’ out-buildings too.) She got her seamstress room just off the main living area. “I really like how it turned out,” she said. She can close the door if she wants to and no one has to see her work in progress. The main floor also contains the master bedroom and bath, a laundry area, half bath, pantry, kennel for dog Nisha, and

Based on an Isaiah 61 Bible passage, she thinks of it as “beauty from the ashes.” They feel that they are getting settled in and starting to make a house a home. With daughter Hayley, mom made a photo album of the journey from pictures taken along the way. It went from a photo of the old house to it being torn down and in a pile of rubble, then the flat level ground after the debris was cleared away. The caption then was “Blank Canvas for a New Beginning.” Speaking of photos, in the fire their own wedding album was lost, as were baby books, and all their clothes. But a wood hope chest and its contents were saved. And so they count their blessings, including the fact that the fire was during the day and not at night as they were sleeping.

The Assinks are very involved as leaders of K-6 youth programs at Grace Baptist Fellowship of Lynden. Randy is the meat department manager at Everson Market. Home needs to be a place that gives a sense of “respite,” he believes. The children at home at present are Lucas and Isaiah. Their oldest son, Caleb, is married to Catherine and also working locally, while Hayley is in California testing a future in acting. It’s a stage in life for Randy and Patti of having their children — and their friends — in the house at various times. And for any other family and friends, they are now set up to host a gathering. As all the changes were happening a year ago, Patti wrote this on a Facebook post: “We have learned much along the way — allowed windows to be broken with slingshots and arrows, shed a few tears, laughed a lot, felt the love and prayers of family and friends. Thank you to all of you who have walked beside us this far.” Then this June: “A lot can happen in a year! Our new house is finished and we are moved in. It is a weird feeling to pull into our driveway and see a different house but we are getting used to it. We are thankful for the Lord’s faithful leading and the support and prayers of family and friends.”
