great people that showed us the ropes” of how things work in Whatcom dairying and Lynden life. They mention the Schoneveld family, veterinarian Jacob Steiger, dairyman Matt Eldridge and businessman Bernie Mulder.    From the start they also had a good relationship with dairy farmer neighbor Roger Bajema, and over the last few years that evolved into taking over and leasing the East Badger Road land and farm buildings of Bajema, who retired and then unexpectedly died at age 75 just last October. They continue to lease now from the Bajema family.    The Engelsmas’ oldest son, Jesse, 26, is very much involved in the farming enterprise with Kevin. Jesse and wife Lindy live nearby and are expecting their second child. Jesse’s eagerness to be in dairying is a boost to all and lets mom and dad get away for a break more often.    For now, it appears that no other of the five children is especially interested in dairy farming, although Karibeth, in college now, may want to become a large animal vet.    Kevin and Paige say they are grateful for the slower and more gracious pace of life in Lynden, Washington, than it was in California, where competition in dairying was also more present.   They love being conveniently close and connected to the community. They are involved in First Reformed Church of Lynden. The five kids — Jesse, Ryan, Cody, Karibeth and Megan — have gone or are going through Lynden Christian School. And now Kevin is on the Whatcom County DHIA board.    It’s especially the Bajema place that needs the monthly DHIA visit, as the main milking parlor does have its own monitoring apparatus.    Theirs is an operation of about 850 cows plus

By the early 2000s it was evident that houses would be closing in on the Chino farm as well. A massive residential plan eventually encircled them on three sides. So Kevin and Paige, with his mother as a partner — his father Jake died in 1984 — were looking seriously to the north.    Plenty of other dairy families were doing the same.    “I know how these cycles go. The operation    Jesse Engelsma doesn’t mind being called the workhorse of the Meadow Park Dairy operation, especially if that lets his parents get away for some well-earned breaks.    “I do the grunt work. He does the management,” Jesse said of his dad.    Don’t minimize the amount of work involved in the hiring, bookkeeping and payroll of it all, with nine farm employees beside Kevin and Jesse. Much of that hired work is the threea-day milking. And dad also gets any night calls, calving and “problems,” Jesse said.    On a mid-March Saturday Jesse was up at 3 a.m. to get going on his long list of duties to be done before the ABS breeder made his daily visit at 10:30 a.m.    There was the usual scraping of manure, also some calves to be moved

into a different pen area.    The schedule included mixing up and delivering the feed rations for three different groups of animals — milking cows, those dry, and heifers near calving. The feed wagon gets a good workout going from the main farm down the road both directions to the secondary facilities.    Every day brings something a little different, he said, but there’s also plenty of good routine, too.

Jesse went to Dordt College in Iowa for a year in agriculture and stayed for two more years working on a calf raising farm.    Now he and his young family live just to the north on Bender Road on an additional acquisition of the Engelsmas as they started up here.    The Otter farm was pretty well set up with the basics of what was needed, although the bunkers for corn and Continued on page 8

Continued from page 3 grass silage did need to be expanded, Jesse said. It also helped that manure transport and irrigation lines were already in the ground between this property and surrounding ones, he said.    The ration mixes consist of different amounts of corn, alfalfa, silage, canola, cottonseed and nutrition pellets. The Engelsmas work with an independent consultant to decide on their mixes and feed supply, for cost savings and precision of ration, they believe.    Sand is used as bedding in loafing stalls. “It’s actually very favorable in terms of mastitis,” Jesse said. The sand settles out as heavier before the manure is disposed of.    Land for dairy farming gets to be competitively sought in Whatcom County, and the Engelsmas do rent from some neighbors. “You can always have more (land), but we have enough for where we are with our manure management,” Jesse said.    They use custom people for ma-

nure pumping and also silage harvest.    A breeder’s visit can be counted on every day of the year except Christmas — “the only day of the year they take off,” Jesse said. The schedule requires staying on top of where all cows and heifers are at in their cycles, and having them ready in place for service that day if required.    The veterinarian’s visit once Jesse Engelsma has fed the heifers and cows close per week for a herd health check to calving their own particular feed ration. also helps with the breeding prothat in 2018 the farmgate milk price cess.    Jesse was 13 years old when the rises from its less-than-break-even family made the move from Califor- level under $15 per hundredweight. nia. Schuler vertical feed mixers. Quality built to last longer is a commitment that shows in their manufacturing process. Medium hard abrasion resistant steel (AR200) is used in the Schuler mixer sides and auger...two areas where mixers are subject to high rates of wear. Overlapping Auger Design speeds up the cleanout of feedstuffs at the end of a batch. Tri-pulse legs on both augers enhance mixing and clean out. Replaceable edge deflector pulls feedstuffs from the mixer sidewalls to load the center of the auger and reduce mixing time.

Not a Bad Udder in the Herd I appreciate the prompt service and excellent quality of bulls All West/Select Sires provides. Their bulls have a great combination of type, milk, and components. Since I started using All West/Select Sires exclusively 15 years ago, the quality and type of my cows has improved to the point of not one bad udder in the herd and has continued to contribute to our dairy’s profitability.
