Dickinson new city clerk/ treasurer Position has varied duties by Elisa Claassen for the Lynden Tribune
Property at Nugent’s Corner that had been in the Dodson family for decades is now sold to Troy and Aubree Lozano, the couple says. The three-acre site includes the former Dodson’s IGA grocery store as well as the Little Roadside Tavern. (Photos courtesy of Whatcom County)
Former Dodson’s IGA site sold; owners open to ideas Troy and Aubree Lozano live nearby NUGENTS CORNER — An Everson couple has bought the site of the former Dodson’s IGA grocery store and is now seeking ideas for how the crossroad location should be used. Troy and Aubree Lozano on Nov. 9 purchased three acres of commercially zoned property at 3705 Mount Baker Highway. The spot is at the juncture with State Route 9, four miles west of Deming and seven miles south of Everson and Nooksack. The site also includes the Little Roadside Tavern. “We’re open to what’s going to work best out there,” Troy Lozano said. “Since we live close to the property and are involved in the community, we’re well aware that local residents and people living further up the Mount Baker Highway would love to see another grocery store. We don’t plan to operate a business there ourselves, but we’re looking for the right tenant who cares about this community and has a financially viable plan.” The Lozanos already own and operate Construction by Champion, a Belling-
ham masonry contractor, and two Bellingham stores of 2020 Solutions, a cannabis retailer. Lozano said the Nugents Corner property won’t be leased to any cannabis retailer. The property was sold for $365,000 by Dodson’s Market Inc., which operated the 20,000-square-foot Dodson’s IGA store from 1964 until April 2017.
“We were impressed by Troy and Aubree’s passion for the community,” said Dave Dodson, of Nooksack, spokesperson for the Dodson family. “We believe they will make a positive contribution to the area.” Anyone interested in knowing more about leasing the Nugents Corner property may visit www.NugentsCorner.com.
EVERSON — In July, Jennifer Bell left the city clerk/ treasurer position after five years in it for a job in the private sector. Mount Baker High School graduate Melanie Dickinson, who completed an MBA Melanie Dickinson with an emphasis in finance while working full-time in banking, was appointed to replace her. According to the city’s website, the combined clerk/treasurer post is responsible for the efficient administration of all city governmental departments. The position oversees the finance department, consisting of utility billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cashiering, public works finance and the muncipal court, as well as the maintenance department and public works sector. Dickinson says she is excited to learn the functions of the city and to see the city expand. She cites the Hawks Landing plat, now in its second phase behind the Aspen and Sable neighborhoods in Strandell, as an example of ongoing growth. Many of its 19 homes have already sold in the mid-to-high $300,000s, which is more affordable than many comparables in the Lynden area, Dickinson said. Current city projects include the retention pond adjacent to the city library property and completion of the Lincoln Street extension. Opening of the new O’Reilly Auto Parts store, between Main Street and the Everson Post Office, has been delayed to early 2019, she said. She understands delays were due to getting store fixtures. Everson City Hall is located at 111 W. Main St. and maintains a website with public contacts, applications and forms to download, and annual adopted budgets.

Fire truck in next ‘Avenger’ movie now sits quiet in Everson Station 81 has added a fair bit of better apparatus in last two years By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com
EVERSON — Fire Chief Mel Blankers is pretty sure he will be able to recognize his department’s engine E-8102 in next year’s new “Avengers” movie. The pumper truck is resting comfortably most days now in the Whatcom County Fire District 1 Station 81 in downtown Everson. You wouldn’t guess that it has served some kind of role — in an epic Battle of New York — in whatever intergalactic adventure Marvel Studios has cooked up for the as-yetunnamed movie set to release in late spring 2019. About 10 months ago, Blankers was scouting around for a pumper that could serve as a reliable backup in Everson. He saw a unit he liked advertised by the Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus company, of Alabama, but the salesman also told Blankers that this particular 2006 E-One truck was not available immediately. It was being used on the set of an “Avengers” film. Blankers eventually was able to see this truck and other vehicles used in the movie, after filming, and he will confirm that he saw the FDNY decals from the early 2018 film shooting still on it. “We are assuming it will be in the next one coming out,” he said. Blankers also says he saw a Crown Victoria taxi cut in half and a Lamborghini with leopard skin seat covers, “so it will be interesting to see how those show up in the movie.” This particular pumper had spent its
District 1 Fire Chief Mel Blankers stands with the 2006 E-One engine now in the Everson station that was used earlier this year in the filming of the next “Avengers” movie, due out in spring 2019. (Calvin Bratt/Lynden Tribune) first 10 years or so in service in Florida not far from where it was manufactured. This model caught the chief’s eye because its storage compartments can be configured in a way that is consistent with the other trucks of Fire District 1, a consistency that is important for finding the right tools and gear quickly, he said. Now securely in the confines of Station 81 in Everson, the 1,000-gallon pumper has been dubbed Avenger 81 by the firefighters there, to make it stand out with a little distinction. And there is now some significantly better equipment on the premises:
• One new Pierce Saber pumper truck arrived for duty in early 2017. It was the first new purchase for the district in 21 years, Blankers said at a dedication event for it in March. The new rig carried a 750-gallon tank, 1,500-gallon-per-minute pump and five-seat cab. It replaced a 1984 pumper. Community people, including longtime former fire chief Anton Neyens, were able to inspect and appreciate the new acquisition. • It wasn’t much later, says Blankers, that the station’s 1997 Darley was in for routine inspection and was found to have some significant problems in its pumping and electri-
cal systems. It obviously couldn’t be relied upon for another five years, as hoped. And so, this year, a Pierce Saber “almost duplicate” to the first has been added to the fleet, Blankers said. Its matching pumping capacity should serve the two-station district for years to come as well as be available for mutual aid as needed to surrounding fire agencies, he said. All this upgrading — also the addition of a career firefighter position — would not have been possible without voters’ 2015 approval of an increase in their levy rate to $1.40 per $1,000 of property value in Fire District 1, the chief said. Meanwhile, district commissioners and staff continue to look at possibilities for replacing or expanding the physical building that has existed at 101 E. Main St. since 1978 and is really too small for good operations, he said. Blankers also hopes the upgrading of firefighting apparatus can win a better fire insurance rating for Everson-area home and business owners in the current round of reassessment by the state.
