LYNDEN — This started out as Joell and Ken Keck doing Sunday drives looking at lots for sale around Lynden. At first they thought The Ridge at Lynden, new view property at Line and Bradley roads, seemed “so far out of town” they wouldn’t be interested. They returned to it, however — once with Joell’s parents, Kelly and Joni Heutink, and together they took note of the two lots

tucked snugly to each other to form the island of Baker Crown Circle in the sweet center of the development. They remarked that those two homeowners would really have to like each other to be that close. “Well, we’ll sell our house and live right next to you,” quipped Kelly. It happened. The Kecks and the Heutinks bought adjoining lots 15 and 16 and started to make their building plans, also together, using lo-
cal residential designer Clyde Libolt. That’s when another interesting thing happened. Joell had in mind that she wanted an Lshaped house in order to build in a certain two-story corner construction feature she had seen on Pinterest. The Heutinks’ design ideas weren’t constraining, and so Libolt delicately suggested to the two couples that it might work better for everyone’s purposes if they switched lots. See Family Houses on C4

They did that too. And so it was that Libolt could design, and then Lynden contractor Brad Heppner would build, these two houses almost as a unified package, including in a few key elements each couple wanted, with both of them being completed in 2015. But the family togetherness had yet another act. Heutink daughter Rockell Bosman and husband Drew ended up buying a Ridge lot just a quick walk away on Spring Mead-
ows Drive, and the construction of their house with general contractor Denny Vander Velden was completed this year. The Heutink house Joni and Kelly Heutink really insisted on only two things for their new house. She wanted to have a prominent place for the baby grand piano she enjoys playing. They also — now being in retirement, he from 30 years of police duty and she from Nooksack Valley teaching — wanted to situate all their living needs on one floor, with no stairs to be a problem in future years. That is accomplished across an open well-flowing 2,393-square-foot main living area. This whole house had to be built within tight setback requirements. One effect of the dimensions is that the 24-foot-wide master bedroom is tucked into the far eastern end of the house with three walls to the outside — certainly a unique feature. They also wanted the walk-in closet of the master suite to be beyond the bath, and it is. The dominant interior shade is taupe, highlighted by both light and dark trim and furnishings. Stacked stonework is used for the big central living area fireplace. The natural terrain of this quarter-acre lot was fairly sharp slope, and the house is built into it. That means Joni and Kelly can step inside their front door on the upslope side and walk directly across to the marvelous view eastward toward farmland and Mt. Baker. This windowed second-level side of the house, including kitchen, is certainly where Joni spends the most time, she says. See Family on C6

Angling the south side of the Heutink house was an interesting challenge for builder Heppner, however. There are six different turns along the 80 feet of length, a steady zigzag to stay within setback from the property line. Plenty of fill and topsoil was needed to create a gentler slope on the down side — or at least a lawn that Kelly can reasonably mow in alignment with the Keck property. The lower level of the house can be its own living quarters, and it has been at times during the three homes’ building process. Each level has its own deck or patio area. Because of the slope factor — forcing heavy use of retaining walls throughout the Baker Ridge neighborhood — Kelly does note that he got more full stand-up storage space on the basement level, where there is also the mechanical room. There was one more thing the Heutinks did need in their garage: room for storage of two vintage vehicles. A 1965 Ford Mustang was restored by Joni’s dad, Roy Dennison, in his Nooksack auto body shop. As it turned out, it is on a car lift in the garage above the 1956 yellow Chevy pickup that Kelly bought for his 60th birthday.

nance that is required and that they also love to do. The couples appreciated working with Dusty Manderson of Sound Landscaping on how to integrate the elements of their yards — “he had eyes for making this work,” Joell said — while letting the owners do their creative part. In the three-stall Keck garage is another showcase of hobby memorabilia, Ken’s expanded collection of motor oil signs, neon beer signs, and gasoline pumps. A large enough garage in which to do this was his one request. Then at the juncture of the garage and the front-door entry is the two-story vertical corner that Joell had her heart set on, and which Libolt designed in. It has two lattice windows on each level, matching ones that continue on around the rest of the house. Upstairs, this corner feature has become a storage area for now, awaiting possible other ideas. Joell was definite that she wanted people to know that her entry area was for taking off shoes and hanging up coats, and so it is large and open and includes benches and bins for storage. On the other hand, no space is needed for a home office, as they don’t do much desktop computing, and so whatever office function they need can be tucked into a closet. plenty of opportunity to show his creativity fashioning things out of metal: gas pipe fixtures, toilet paper holder, coat hooks and more. With two young children, now ages 5 and 9, the Kecks wanted to maximize a second floor for bedrooms and a second full bath. Also, the bonus area over the garage was turned into a “theater room” with no windows in it, where the family can settle in with popcorn to watch movies. The Kecks, like the Heutinks, love the double benefit of building into a hillside. “I love the feeling of being high, and yet walking out at street level,” Joell said. In the back yard is a pergola whose sides can be closed off with curtains, and the trees
and plants edging the property will eventually grow up higher for a bit more privacy. Despite the closeness of the houses, the neighbors say they can scarcely tell if the other family is home. They certainly cannot hear of any comings and goings of each other. The Bosman house Rockell, as general manager of the Scotty Brown’s restaurant in Barkeley Village, doesn’t mind saying that she and husband Drew were after simplicity and low maintenance in the way they planned their house and yard. The interior layout is very open and spacious, with its color scheme very much tending toward light and airy. Their custom-designed fireplace in the living area was made by Ken Keck out of one
piece of rolled steel. Their nearly half-acre of lot required a significant amount of regrading to be ready for landscaping, and a planting of grass across the property is now coming up. In the master bath is a completely walkaround double shower with rock work hinting of the other two houses. Both this house and the Keck one feature a sliding barn-style door into a kids’ play area. The overhead garage doors are 10 feet wide, accommodating larger vehicles. The Bosmans moved into their new house this past May. All three families say they feel very satisfied to have chosen this spot to build their new homes, with its magnificent views and now good neighbors they are getting to know.

Fairy tales do come true
Living in a ‘lighthouse’ along the shore is also Old World, from simple to fabulous By Elisa Claassen for the Lynden Tribune
WHATCOM — On the site of what was once a very modest 900-square-foot family cabin for summertime use, the current 3,200-square-foot home of Larry and Becky Raney sits high along the shore near Birch Bay … reminiscent of a storied lighthouse. But first, this is far removed from family origins in the foothills of Maple Falls, across the county. Becky Raney’s mother, Danna Beech Haddock, grew up there, and together with first husband Wayne Beech raised their three children in the forests and meadows of east Whatcom, in the shadow of mountains. Not only did Danna inherit the role of Maple Falls postmaster from her mother — a position she held for 38 years — but she later inherited a vacation home on the Point Whitehorn beach from those grandparents, Dan and Catherine LaVeille. At the time of the original small house, the “neighborhood” south of Birch Bay State Park contained only two homes, Danna Beech Haddock remembers. The other home is still owned by members of that early family as well.

Revival The old water-view dwelling, built by her grandfather in 1961, was rented out by the family after the older generation had passed on. “Grandpa built it with every penny he could muster,” Becky said. “The foundation was sitting on logs and the heat was a wood stove, and it was freezing!” Larry and Rebecca Raney rented and then purchased the property around 2001. to their Bellingham-based business in the Irongate district, for the two years of construction. Forgoing an architect, Becky, who had studied graphic design, served as the building designer with her cousin Kristi Johnson-Loveland, an architect. They went over only Becky’s drawing for engineering, making some revisions, before submitting to county officials. Becky’s brother Andy Beech — in addition to being the luthier behind the late musician Prince’s guitars — is also a custom finish carpenter and served as project contractor. Subcontracted work went to local providers including Valley Plumbing & Electric, Lynden Interiors for tile and wood floors, West Coast Windows, Mt. Baker Roofing, Stockton’s Paint and Builder’s Alliance for lumber. Windwood Landscaping constructed the patio and lawn, and also put in a sprinkler system based on a garden layout by Becky. “I was going for an ‘Old World beachy feel’ which was the more Old World,” Becky said. “Like a Tudor home with the Irish feel. My inspiration came from the lighthouse that was at the Bergsma Gallery, and because (we were) living on the beach it seemed fun. “Buildings and Codes did not accept my original plans. They would not allow a breezeway, and the lighthouse was on the corner of the house instead of the middle where it is now. The original design is still my favorite. “It was a smaller home. The massive knotty-pine door at the front of the home offers a stately greeting to arrivals. The surprise twist is an operable speakeasy accomplished with the aid of a local welder. Visitors can also walk through a much smaller, but equally comely door from the back patio off the sloping driveway. Both doors, designed by Becky and built by Andy, are reminiscent of ones found in Hugh Comstock fairytale cottages of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Immediately upon entry, an open staircase directs traffic to the second floor on the left. The first floor includes a full-sized bath with rounded tub, washroom, pantry, a spacious living room with built-in bookcases, and a fireplace with a den/home office in the corner facing the street. The kitchen, open to the living and dining area, has a commercial-grade Jen-Air six-burner/two-oven stove with grill. Contrasting dark and light cabinets are surrounded by green tiles. er, a guest room with hand-made quilts, guest bath and craft room ring the sides of the second floor next to the open stairwell. Another set of enclosed steeper stairs provides access into the attic and the small room inside the tower of the lighthouse. Views sweep over the neighborhood and Birch Bay. The door going onto the deck was a bit of a challenge, Becky said, because of the angle of the lighthouse. The frame around the door had to be two feet wide at the top and six inches at the bottom. “My other pride and joy in my garden is the arbors that my husband built. There are two and these are a labor of love. And I also love my pear trees. They are grafted to have three different varieties of pears on one tree and they grow in the shape of a fence. The trees love the south side of the house which faces the road, and it is a show-stopper. People are always asking me about those fruit trees. “The trail down to the beach has always been a challenge, but once you

are there, it is a wonderful walk — with much wildlife, from blue/grey herons, fish, crab, oysters and other shellfish, seals, sea otters and the birds,” Becky said. Standing on the steps near the shore and looking back up, the lighthouse is a commanding presence over the inviting paved patio with red umbrellas, tables and terraced gardens, with brightly colored seasonal flowers including dinnerplate dahlias for fall. The American flag proudly waves at the edge of the yard by the shore. While the home’s elegance could convey formality, visitors instead feel immediately at home. It is a place meant for gathering to occur and memories to be made.

Informational opportunities coming up Sept. 20, 22 WHATCOM — Join over 125 WSUWhatcom County Extension Master Gardener volunteers in teaching sustainable gardening and environmental stewardship practices throughout the county while at the same time learning and having fun with other like-minded volunteers. Training focuses on learning how to research, educate, mentor and answer horticulture questions for the general public in a collaborative environment. Community projects and service to others are a rewarding complement of the program.
The WSU Master Gardener program grew out of the need for Washington State University county Extension agents responding to the growing interest in home gardening over 45 years ago. Last year, Whatcom County Master Gardeners donated 12,000 hours of volunteering in free diagnostic plant clinics, maintaining demonstration gardens at Hovander Homestead Park, teaching at community gardens, going to county schools and more. Training space is limited to 25 people. Tuition of $450 includes all materials and 12 weeks of classroom lectures and labs led by local and state experts. Saturday field days are to be announced. Training is open to all who are 18 and older. It all amounts to approximately 60 hours of classroom and field instruction. No gardening experience is necessary, Continued on the next page

Fall Home & Garden just a willingness to learn and to volunteer. Open house information sessions will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, both at WSU Whatcom Extension, 1000 N. Forest St. Meet Master Gardeners and learn about volunteer requirements. Training begins Feb. 3 and runs through April 25, 2019. Classes are held weekly on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Extension office, 1000 N. Forest St., Bellingham. Homework, all quizzes and the final exam are done through the WSU Master Gardener Online Training Program using one’s home computer. The training averages out to 4-6 hours a week. Computer skills are required. Applications for the 2019 MG Training Class are now available at the Extension Office or on the website. All 2019 trainees will become certified after passing the final exam and satisfying the volunteer education requirements. Scholarships are available upon request. The deadline to apply is Nov. 20, 2018. Don’t delay signing up, as this class fills quickly.

Is your heating system ready for cool weather? Savvy homeowners know that with cool weather comes a bit of preparation. A quick audit of your heating equipment can mean less wasted energy, a more comfortable home and lower energy bills. Nearly half of all heating and cooling equipment in U.S. homes never performs to its advertised capacity and efficiency due to incorrect installation, according to U.S. government estimates. And if you have an older system that was built before current efficiency standards, you could be spending more than needed on heating your home. If it’s time to replace your system, be sure to have it properly installed by an HVACR professional, certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE), the nation’s largest nonprofit certification body for HVACR technicians. NATE-certified technicians are skilled profession-
als who have proven their knowledge in the HVACR industry by passing specialized certification tests. “The NATE-certified techs who perform maintenance and repairs do a consistently great job. We never have any concerns if the job is done right,” says Rob Kirkpatrick, a longstanding customer of Thermal Services, a Nebraska-based contractor. Beyond having an efficient heating system properly installed, you can prepare for the season in the following ways: • Clean heating filters. Check them every couple of weeks and change them at least twice in the season, or as directed by the manufacturer. • Check and maintain insulation. Improperly insulated walls, floors, attics, basements and crawl spaces drain away heat and can also lead to moisture imbalance. Adding weather stripping and caulk around windows and doors can also improve a home’s insulation. • Turn down the thermostat or install a programmable thermostat to regulate temperature. • Clean the furnace area. Don’t keep chemicals or cleaning products near a
heater, and don’t store anything next to it that could impede ventilation. • Free all vents and returns of obstructions. Don’t lay carpet over vents, place furniture over or in front of them, or obstruct the flow of air. • Dry air feels cooler than moist air, so install a humidifier. A simple humidifier may make the home feel 5 degrees warmer than a home with dry air. • Look into geothermal heating systems which use earth’s natural heat and are among the most efficient and energyconserving heating and cooling technologies currently available. • For optimal performance of your HVAC system, get an annual service contract that includes both heating and cooling maintenance. But take care to avoid poor service and scams. To find a qualified local contractor who employs certified HVACR professionals, look for the NATE logo or go to www.natex.org. By incorporating a few energyfriendly habits into your routine and by making sure your heating system is operating optimally this season, you can keep utility bills low while maintaining a cozy, comfortable home.
