PeaceHealth Medical Group Arthritis In the case of arthritis-based issues of the foot or ankle, there are multiple non-surgical treatment options. Non-surgical treatments include steroid shots, braces, and physical therapy. Dr. Kiesau says doctors suggest what activities a person should do to prolong their remaining good cartilage, helping delay surgery. If surgery becomes necessary, improvements in techniques and technologies have resulted in patients lacing up their shoes a lot sooner than before. “The technology is always getting better,” Dr. Kiesau says of surgeries. “Total knee and total hip replacements have been around for a long time. Total ankles are a newer, and constantly improving, technology. It’s an exciting time for people with ankle problems.”
Bunions Another orthopedic issue commonly treated by the PeaceHealth Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team is bunions, which are bony bumps that form on the joint at the base of the big toe. These deformities can affect all age groups, and impact a person’s running, exercising, and shoe-wearing abilities. Bunions are another area where new technologies have refined surgical techniques making recovery much faster. Dr. Kiesau says post-surgery patients can often put weight on their foot in a walking boot the same day they have surgery. Whether it’s non-surgical or surgical, the goal of any orthopedic treatment is to get patients back on their feet as soon as possible, doing the activities they love. If you’re searching for additional trustworthy information on foot and ankle injuries and how surgery might affect you, Dr. Kiesau recommends visiting footcaremd. org, a patient-friendly website from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. -Authored by and republished with permission from WhatcomTalk

Unity Care NW of July!
The doctors and nurses at Unity Care NW in Ferndale and Bellingham want to encourage everyone in Whatcom county to get at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot by the 4th of July. Studies show that COVID-19 vaccines are effective at keeping you from getting COVID-19. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine will also help keep you from getting seriously ill even if you do get exposed to COVID-19. COVID-19 vaccines teach our immune systems how to recognize and fight the virus that causes COVID-19. It typically takes 2 weeks after vaccination for the body to build protection (immunity) against the virus that causes COVID-19. That means it is possible a person could still get COVID-19 before or just after vaccination and then get sick because the vaccine did not have enough time to provide protection. People get some protection starting two weeks after their first
Why COVID-19 Vaccines are Important COVID-19 vaccination is an important tool to bring you closer to enjoying the activities you have missed. Some people with COVID-19 feel fine. Some feel bad. Some get very sick. In Whatcom County, we have had over 9,500 cases of COVID-19 and nearly 100 people have died because of a COVID-19 infection. Getting vaccinated before the 4th of July will help prevent another spike in infections. If you’re not sure if you should get vaccinated, ask your doctor for more information. COVID-19 vaccines are free for you and people can now get a COVID-19 vaccine in many places. Go to vaccinelocator.doh.wa.gov to find a place where you can get the COVID-19 vaccine.
The team at Unity Care NW hopes you’ll
join us by getting vaccinated

Mt. Baker Vision Clinic The doctors, technicians and staff of Mt. Baker Vision Clinic are proud to offer cutting medical technology and services to help ensure our patients maintain clear and comfortable vision. Thank you for letting us serve you! In the field of eye care, digital retinal photography and optical coherence tomography are essential tools that allow for the non-invasive analysis of retinal tissue for early diagnosis and management of retinal disease and glaucoma. These technologies allow for clinical observation, measurement, and identification of structures that otherwise are not easily visible. They allow the doctor to analyze, measure and monitor for disease progression by comparing the findings with other examination results. As a result, we are able to detect, differentiate between and manage more effectively glaucoma and retinal health concerns without using more invasive tests that may lead to complications. The lefthand images below are of a patient with moderate to severe diabetic retinopathy. The image on the right was taken one year after the image on the left. Close inspection reveals a worsening of retinal hemorrhaging due to the patient’s uncontrolled diabetes. Consequently, we also changed our treatment to prevent further progression of diabetic retinal disease. Ocular coherence tomography (OCT) allows us to look below the surface of the retina. The patient in the righthand image experienced a complication following ocular surgery for his left eye resulting in retina swelling. Using OCT images, we customized his treatment and helped him achieve full recovery.

Aspire Wellness Health is our first and best defense! In the past year, through the world’s COVID-19 experience, we all have realized and been reminded that HEALTH is our first and best defense. Here at Aspire Wellness I believe that one of the first and best places to begin our pursuit of health is by how we feed and fuel our bodies. Food is our best medicine and weight management is healthcare. We are grateful daily by the positive outcomes we have the privilege to witness when our clients simply change what they eat. Some of these outcomes have been reduced inflammation, reduced or eliminated need for prescriptions, improved sleep and energy, improved memory and focus, improved mobility and increased activity, improved self-esteem and best of all, reduced risk of many diseases and illnesses. This is achieved by reducing their BMI, reducing their risk for metabolic syndrome by improving their insulin resistance. What is metabolic syndrome? According to Mayo Clinic, metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels. NHLBI also notes that conditions such as fatty liver disease, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), gallstones, and breathing issues (such as sleep apnea) play a role with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome, or insulin resistance, can contribute to severe high blood sugar, severe low blood sugar, heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease, eye problems, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and discussed in the media today, poor outcomes from COVID-19. The good news… is we have an opportunity every day, every meal, to improve our health, until we don’t. When we address our health with food as our medicine, our results may be curative through improved health. When we address our health (often caused by a poor diet) with medicine, our results may be management of poor health. When you learn to live at a healthy weight and BMI, you often not only reduce risks but eliminate the onset of health concerns. Here at Aspire Wellness, we have the privilege every day to encourage our clients to pursue their best health. We have a meal plan that works for both weight loss and long-term weight stabilization. We have an amazing team of experienced compassionate coaches. Our clients have said: “It’s holistic and empowering. The staff at Aspire understands how food and what we eat slides its way into every aspect of our lives. With this awareness, the coaching and structure of the diet enables people to be more successful for their results” -Amy B. “If I can follow it, anyone can! It has given me a new lease on life. This has changed my whole life!” -Carol W. “I would recommend Aspire Wellness because education is key. Not only do I want to be held accountable, I want the information so I can make the healthy choices in the years to come.” -Diana Y. “To put it simply, it’s changed my life. I know size isn’t everything, but feeling good in your own skin is.” Brandie B. At Aspire Wellness you will find a non-invasive approach to wellness. We have three locations in Anacortes, Burlington and Lynden, WA and offer virtual coaching, as well. We also offer Red-Light and Celluma Light therapies. Our stores offer several popular product lines to our communities; Walden Farms, Garlic Box, Bucky sleep products, Plant Therapy, OSEA skincare, COOLA sunscreen, Skinny Syrups, Hum supplements and more. Family Care Network What is a family doctor? A family doctor serves as a primary healthcare provider for all ages and stages of life. Family doctors treat all medical conditions, including illness and injury. They also focus on preventive medicine to help you stay well, screen for problems, and manage chronic conditions. Most health concerns can be effectively managed by a family-care team who comes to know you over time. When you choose a family doctor, you get ongoing, comprehensive health care. By focusing on whole health, we promote well-being while empowering and equipping you and your family to live your best, healthy life. Care is typically provided in an office setting. During COVID-19, adjustments have been made in most offices to offer telemedicine options to reduce exposure risk. Don’t put off needed medical care – your doctor is ready and able to see you!

Visiting Angels My parents are at the point of needing help in their home. This is new and uncharted territory for us. How do you go about finding caregivers to work with people like my parents? We know that this is a difficult decision to make. We approach this as if it were our home and our parents. In our hiring process we first look for caregivers that have the compassion and skill to do the job. They must have the heart to care like family and the knowledge and ability to give the care. Secondly, caregivers must be dependable. Their dependability has a domino effect, they must show up and be on time! Life has enough challenges without you having to worry about help that doesn’t arrive on time. Finally, a caregiver must be trustworthy. Having someone new in your home can be scary.
That all sounds great. But how do you assure that this is true about your caregivers? At Visiting Angels we not only value these things, we actually test for them. We are the only ones in our area to use a nationally recognized Caregiver Assessment tool that measures for a caregiver’s ability to work well one-on-one, and measures their character for reliability and trustworthiness. And for your peace of mind, we assign a specific Case Manager to meet with you and your family, to get to know them, and the client’s needs. That same Case Manager introduces our caregivers to you on the first visit, as well as monitors the ongoing care.

8 Ways to Reach a Healthy Blood Pressure
ethnicity - there are things you can do. Consider these tips from experts with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) The Heart Truth program: 1. Know Your Numbers. Everyone ages 3 and older should get their blood pressure checked by a health care provider at least once a year. Expert advice: 30 minutes before your test, don’t exercise, drink caffeine or smoke cigarettes. Right before, go to the bathroom. During the test, rest your arm on a table at the level of your heart and put your feet flat on the floor. Relax and don’t talk. 2. Eat Healthy. Follow a heart-healthy eating plan, such as NHLBI’s Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH). For example, use herbs for flavor instead of salt and add one fruit or vegetable to every meal.
3. Move More. Get at least 2 1/2 hours of physical activity each week to help lower and control blood pressure. To ensure you’re reducing your sitting throughout the day and getting active, try breaking your activity up. Do 10 minutes of exercise, three times a day or one 30-minute session on five separate days each week. Any amount of physical (Family Features) To take care of your heart, it’s activity is better than none and all activity counts. important to know and track your blood pressure. (continued on next page) Millions of Americans have high blood pressure, also called hypertension, but many don’t realize it or aren’t keeping it at a healthy level. For most adults, healthy blood pressure is 120/80 millimeters of mercury or less. Blood pressure consistently above 130/80 millimeters of mercury increases your risk for heart disease, kidney disease, eye damage, dementia and stroke. Your doctor might recommend lowering your blood pressure if it’s between 120/80 and 130/80 and you have other risk factors for heart or blood vessel disease. High blood pressure is often “silent,” meaning it doesn’t usually cause symptoms but can damage your body, especially your heart over time. While you can’t control everything that increases your risk for high blood pressure - it runs in families, often increases with age and varies by race and 20

(continued from page 20) 4. Aim for a Healthy Weight. If you’re overweight, losing just 3-5% of your weight can improve blood pressure. If you weigh 200 pounds, that’s a loss of 6-10 pounds. To lose weight, ask a friend or family member for help or to join a weight loss program with you. Social support can help keep you motivated.

High blood pressure during pregnancy can harm the mother and baby. It also increases a woman’s risk of having high blood pressure later in life. Talk to your health care provider about high blood pressure. Ask if your blood pressure is normal and track it during and after pregnancy. If you’re planning to become pregnant, start monitoring it now. 7. Stop Smoking. The chemicals in tobacco smoke can harm your heart and blood vessels. Seek out resources, such as smoke free hotlines and text message programs, that offer free support and information. 8. Work with Your Doctor. Get help setting your target blood pressure. Write down your numbers every time you get your blood pressure checked. Ask if you should monitor your blood pressure from home. Take all prescribed medications as directed and keep up your healthy lifestyle. If seeing a doctor worries you, ask to have your blood pressure taken more than once during a visit to get an accurate reading.
