Lynden Community/ Senior Center 401 Grover Street Lynden, WA 98264
Welcome to January 2019 and the first edition of our new monthly bulletin! Remember a couple of winters ago? We definitely hope to not have a repeat of that winter, but be prepared for stormy weather! Keep a little extra food & water around as well as alternative heat and light sources if possible. If you would like to stock up on a few of our fresh made frozen dinners just in case, they are available for $5.00 at the center or if you get home delivery the drivers can bring it. If weather is bad and you are not sure if the center is open, listen to KGMI radio (or check their website) for announcements. We will also post it on the center’s Facebook page: Lynden Community/Senior Center. Our general rule is that if the schools are closed, then we are closed.

From the Director, Cathi LeCocq A blessed 2019 to you all! I think this poem puts it best in words for me ~ Lord, as the New Year dawns today, Help me to put my faults away. Let me be big in little things; Grant me the joy which friendship brings; Keep me from selfishness and spite, Let me be wise to what is right. A Happy New Year! grant that I May cause no tear to any eye. When this new year in time shall end, Let it be said: “I’ve played the friend, Have lived and loved and labored here And made of it a happy year.” ~Edgar Guest (1881–1959), “Prayer for the New Year”
From the Board...
A new year, and soon an election of new board members! Nominations for the board will be taken in February, but it’s not too early to begin thinking about who should represent you, and whether that someone might be YOU! Members of the Board should have some knowledge about all activities at the center and be actively involved in at least one aspect of the center. Board members need to have a good understanding of the goals and purposes of the community center and wholeheartedly support its mission. If you are not currently knowledgeable about the center, then demonstrate a sincere interest and willingness to becoming informed and involved. Above all, board members need to be dedicated to working together in a positive manner for the betterment of the center and its members.

Center News & Events
Fridays are full of Favorites this month! January 4 we have Claudette Sterk. January 11 is Richard Tucker and January 18 is Ben Hickey. To end the month, Bill DeGroot will be here on Friday, January 25 at 12:30 pm following lunch. Bill is known for his heartfelt gospel music and also his spot-on impersonation of Roy Orbison! January is a great time to begin planning upcoming events for the new year! The Fundraiser Committee has ideas for a Mystery Dinner evening or weekend fundraiser, and possibly other evening activities such as dinners with entertainment or maybe utilizing the new big screen TV – possibly a Super Bowl party? (A big thank you to the Fundraiser Committee for organizing and carrying out the raffles that paid for the TV!) Our second annual Community Indoor Garage Sale will be in April. Start saving up your quality discards to either donate to the center for the sale or rent a table to sell your own. This is a community event and is open to anyone in the area, so spread the news that we will have tables to rent. It should be even bigger and better than last year! It’s also time to begin organizing for our annual events such as the Spring Tea in May and the 50+ Golden Anniversary Party in June. The Program Committee can use some more members to help with these and other events. Maybe you have an idea for a new special event we could try? Bring your ideas and join in to help a little or a lot.

Please and Thank You... Center Needs: Baked Goodies for the Coffee Bar - We no longer get donations from the grocery stores, so any donations of store bought pastries or cookies will keep sweets available with coffee!
Your support of the Coffee Bar is needed also. Remember, Coffee, Tea or Cocoa is $1.00. This is really a bargain, so if you have more than one refill (or oversized containers); please help cover our costs by chipping in an extra dollar or two. ~ Thank You!
Center Gifts: A huge Thank You to all our members who made and donated fabulous baked items for our annual Bake Sale & Bazaar. We do great things when everyone participates as able! Thank you to all who supported our monthly raffles and a major THANK YOU to Lynden Door for their very generous donation which made it possible for us to hit our goal and purchase the new big screen TV! Thank you also to the anonymous donor of the two $100 grocery gift cards for the December raffle.
