Dutch Treat
Lynden diner long in a family, greatly loved by its regulars Surprisingly, owner Mili Blok grew up in an academic household. Her father, J. Richard Mayer, was a professor at Western Washington University and later a dean at Huxley College of the Environment. Mili was a sophomore at Lynden High School when the Mayers came from New York in 1978. Her mother, June, who had studied business in college, was driving around town and saw a small “For Sale” sign in the Third Street diner’s window. Dutch Treat Restaurant, begun in the late 1950s, had gone through a few changes in ownership. For some reason, even without food industry background, this opportunity appealed to June. Although not fancy, it was a good place. After a form of training, June bought the business and Mili went to work there. After 20 years of working with her mom, and choosing family life after a stint at Western herself, Mili took over ownership in 2000. In 40-plus years the menu has changed very little, mainly 4
subtracting steak and dinner items to focus on breakfast and lunch. Otherwise, it’s the same approach they were taught, same sauces and ingredients. The key for Mili is her customers — in essence, her extended family. The staff becomes very familiar with those who come in week after week for their breakfast or lunch, and possibly a shake to go with it. Amid COVID-19, they may have to order out. Some customers bring their own trays to eat in their cars or to sit in one of two erected tents. Hours are somewhat reduced. But they still come, COVID or not. Mili notices that initially people may sit at neighboring tables, but soon they are visiting between tables. While customers may frequent “their” spot, the employees in the kitchen are often practically lifers in the community as well. Janet Van Werven is one. She’s been there for 30 years and is greatly valued. “They are like family,” Mili said of her workers. She also spoke of a Mr. Littlejohn, who has since passed, who discovered Dutch Treat when he was around age 90. He joined the

faithful customers for his final years. “He was a regular until he died.”
goes on. Life is good. I feed people.”
She names a “Pete and Jewel” and a “Frank and Marsha,” first names of couples she sees day in and day out. People stop in, smile and sit for awhile.
She will make donuts or sandwiches or hamburgers while watching customers put fork to mouth and enjoy what she has made. “I’ve had my customers say they are the best!”
“I feel like through all of the crazy in my past few years in a small town, and people asking how I get through it, and I say ‘I’m here to get to feed people’,” Mili said with a smile and emphasizing the word “get.” “Life
When Mili is not at the diner, the family has a farm, four children plus grandchildren, and she is also often busy lining up blood drives and donors or volunteering at the Christian Health Care Center.

Dave’s Sports Shop
Vander Hoek has made it an outdoor gear destination Some version of today’s Dave’s Sports Shop has existed in Lynden for more than 60 years. The store has always been a local staple, the place where folks go to get their outdoor gear and where memories begin to be made for both kids and adults. The business was started in 1957 as Jude’s Sporting Goods & Housewares by Dave’s parents, Jude and Gert Vander Hoek. The shop was located in downtown Lynden on Front Street in the building that would later house Colony House Furniture and now is Lynden Door administration offices. In 1972 the shop moved to the growing Fairway Center and became part of the Coast to Coast Hardware family. Drawing on the resources of a national chain, Coast to Coast sold hardware and housewares along with the 1 2
popular sporting goods. Current co-owner Dave Vander Hoek remembers working for his parents back then. “I grew up in the business,” Dave said. “Of my 65 years, 50 of those have been working here.” In 1976 Dave joined up with high school classmate Dean Hendricks in partnering with Jude and Gert. All together, they operated the store at 1712 Front St. until 1986 when the JCPenney building in Fairway became available. The partners moved to that building and expanded before Jude and Gert retired in 1993. In 1999 the Coast to Coast corporation merged with Ace Hardware. Dave and Dean rolled with the change and the Lynden location became an Ace outlet. “When we were with Ace, there was an amount of sporting goods, but not a ton of them,” Dave said. >> continues on page 14

In the Lynden space, the sporting goods section only occupied about 2,000 square feet. For sure, it was a tight fit for the high interest there is for outdoor gear in Whatcom County. So in April 2007 Dave and Claudia VanderHoek took advantage of another opportunity in the Fairway Center and opened Dave’s Sports Shop as its own business, complete with 6,300 square feet dedicated entirely to sporting goods. “The customers, the people are my favorite part of it,” Dave said, noting generations of families. “We’ve sold many first Red Ryder BB guns and first fishing rods.” In October 2020 Dave and Claudia made known their intention to retire, and they were looking for new owners who would be the right fit to carry on the successful business the family had built in the community.

Lynden Schools meet the challenge, and continue moving forward!
students back into buildings late last year and recent state guidelines have encouraged districts to return to in-person learning.
The education system was front-line to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Shutdowns and a general sense of unease took over in the spring and continued into the fall, with most schools operating in a virtual or hybrid (mixed remote and on-campus) mode. But as time passed into 2021, the education enterprise started to bounce back.
Frey said the district believes being in-person for learning is great, but is also aware of the challenges it brings.
What exactly is that going to look like in 2021? The picture was still unclear early on, but local leaders sounded optimistic about what they need to do. Lynden School District Superintendent Jim Frey said this period has been the most challenging circumstance he’s ever gone through in his career. “Nothing really compares to trying to navigate education in a pandemic,” he said. The Lynden School District started bringing its 16

community indicators and circumstances hopefully improve, we can expand on what we already have — keeping in mind we need to do it safely and in the context of a community safety environment.”

Across town, Lynden Christian Schools ventured forth bravely with every possible safety protocol in place already on Sept. 1, and continued the 2020-21 year safely in-person without having any virus spread. Other public districts across the county began bringing back students into classrooms slowly and in different protocols.
The pandemic has been tough on everyone, especially those working in education, but Frey believes the teachers and staff of schools, together with supportive families, have made everything work so far.
Moving forward, Frey said the focus for Lynden public schools needed to be not just the educational aspect, but the full scope of in-person learning. “There’s a lot of things that can go into bouncing back,” he said. “Certainly learning to live, operate, engage and exist in this environment that’s still ongoing.” “I don’t know that we have a clear sense of bouncing

Local housing, real estate market stays hot
Both home and rental prices jumped 12% in 2020 Amidst all else that went on in 2020, certainly this was a bright spot — the housing and real estate market. Lynden joined in the ongoing robust rise in home prices that showed across most of Whatcom County. The median price for Lynden in 2020 jumped 12.1% to $445,000 while the county was up 10.5% to $442,000, according to compiled Multiple Listing data. Number of units sold was up pretty consistently too, to 281 for the year in Lynden. “The housing market remains strong,” stated the Windermere company in a year-end review. And looking ahead countywide, this was the prospect for 2021: “With low mortgage rates, limited inventory and high demand, we project prices will continue to rise.” Actually, this has been a pattern for a while now. Over

the last 10 years, the median home price in Lynden has climbed by 72.5%, from $258,000 in 2011 to the $445,000 of last year. It’s similar for the whole county. Wow! What gives? Well, the attractiveness of the area and its opportunities and natural beauty cannot be hidden. “With magnificent natural scenery, local cultural attractions and waterfront adventures, this region is a truly unique area of Washington State,” says Windermere Lynden broker Karen Timmer. “The diverse communities have perennially been recognized by the national media as some of the best places to live in America.” Lynden is a highly desired place to live. As just a snapshot of a point in time, Timmer noted in January 2021, in the Lynden area [Lynden School District boundaries] there were 12 homes and three condos on the market. Also, 17 homes/condos were pending closing and an additional 13 homes/condos were pending inspection. That’s potentially 42 in the

pipeline of selling. Houses continue to go up on Lynden’s northeast side and they’re really filling in available space throughout town. Yet construction is just keeping up with demand, and it remains a seller’s market out there, the professionals say. Some of the building is for apartments and condomiums, with their own dynamic. Another striking statistic from Windermere is that the average price of vacant lots sold in the county in 2020 leapt up past $182,000. With the demand, it’s not surprising that rental prices in Lynden also continue to rise. The median rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Lynden was $1,175 at the end of 2020, reports source Zumper. That is a 12% increase over the previous year. For a 2-bedroom, the median rent was $1,263, up 4%, and for a 3-bedroom it was $1,925, up 38%.

Lynden Youth Sports ready to go
Youth sports back in Lynden! Perhaps a little lost in the turned-upside-down world of sports of this past year was general youth sports. Just like many levels of sports, the open-to-all activity that Lynden Youth Sports offers was put on pause because of the pandemic early in 2020. Unlike professional and college sports though, youth sports in Whatcom County were still on hold in early 2021. That was due to change come springtime. The Lynden Youth Sports board members kept meeting through the pandemic trying to plan ahead. They kept aiming for when they would be able to offer recreational sports again to the youth of the community and what they should offer. The usual sports offered are basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, soccer and football.

Lynden Youth Sports president Rich Waldemar said he thinks they’ll move forward with offering the usual sports they offer in the spring, instead of starting with fall or winter sports. “We’ve talked about a short basketball season and are trying to throw a short football season in. In my mind at this point in time we’re going to pick up the season at the time and go forward from there,” Waldemar said of 2021. “Hopefully, we get a baseball season, which would be baseball and softball, and then our fall sport seasons.” Similar to the high school sports scene, outdoor sports stand a better chance of happening than indoor sports due to the reduced COVID exposure level outside. “I’m optimistic we’re going to be able to do something,” Waldemar said of spring. “You have parents and kids that are tired of being cooped up and tired of being at home. For me, I’m really hopeful we’re going to have some resemblance of a baseball and softball season this spring. We’re going to prepare to do one and

get applications ready. We’re going to be ready to go if we’re allowed to do so.”

Some kids in the area have been able to remain active through sports during the pandemic, but Waldermar said those are the ones who have shown they’ll play or already do play at the varsity level of a school. But not every kid falls into that category — thus the point of having Lynden Youth Sports.
The board will continue to meet and put together a plan for bringing back recreational youth sports to Lynden in 2021.
Waldemar said kids need to get back outside. Being active physically is crucial, and he even expects Lynden Youth Sports could see newcomer kids who have never previously played.
“They’re all willing and wanting to put their time and energy into getting youth sports programs going again in our community as long as we can safely do it and legally do it,” he said.
“In my mind we’re going to find kids who traditionally didn’t even have a sports involvement wanting to do some sort of recreational thing, just to be outside and be around people,” Waldemar said. “I think socially it’s so important. For kids to get out and get exercise is so important.” The Lynden Youth Sports board knows how important it is for kids to be active and that having a

Nw Washington Fair to 10 days in 2021
New manager Chris Pickering: ‘I want people to feel like it’s their fair’ One bright spot on the horizon for Lynden is the expansion of the Northwest Washington Fair to 10 days in 2021. The new dates are Aug. 12-21. What has been a community tradition for more than a century will now be spread out for more opportunity to enjoy the showcase of agriculture, the various entertainment options, the socializing and fun of a fair, says first-year manager Chris Pickering. “Moving to 10 days allows our guests more opportunities to experience everything the fair has to offer. There’s less pressure to cram everything into one day and incentives to visit on less crowded days,” he said.
The ambitious decision to expand was made even as the six-day 2020 fair had to be cancelled (like everything else) due to COVID-19, but the idea of going to 10 days had been considered by the fair board for many years, Pickering said. It’s a chance for other changes, too, somewhat as a domino effect. For instance, all dairy cattle are now among the livestock in the Henry Jansen Agricultural Center. A new milking parlor is being built at the north end of that building, so fairgoers can continue to see cows actually being milked. The new milking area will feature a “hyperchiller” cooling milk in just seconds, Pickering said. The move of dairy cattle to be among all the other stock “does wonders for our manure management,” he added. The vacated dairy barn will now be used for the vendors that were crowded outside south of the Expo Building and Farm Pavilion. >> continues on page 34

That, in turn, opens up the fairgrounds’ central grassy area to be a new gathering spot for kids and families. “We’re increasing the number of free stages from two to six and adding a free kids’ play area, including a stage featuring a ventriloquist and comedy science show,” Pickering said. “So there’s more to do than ever before.” The Northwest Washington Fair aims for more creative engagement of families with younger kids. In fact, the fair wants to be a destination of fun for everyone in the region, both Lynden and beyond. “I want it to feel like it’s their fair,” Pickering said. Planned for 2020 and now effective in 2021, a new $35 season pass is good for coming and going as you please on any of the 10 days of the fair. All animal showing will be on a “split show” basis, consisting of two five-day segments over the total 10 days. “Splitting our livestock show allows our exhibitors a chance to enjoy the fair,” Pickering said. “Each livestock entrant will receive a wristband good for access to the full 10 days. The split show also allows more exhibitors to participate, as several of our barns have been at capacity.” Amanda Stidham, who was already in charge of the springtime Whatcom County Youth Fair on the grounds, has been brought on full-time for the main fair as the competitive exhibits coordinator. It’s expected (let’s hope!) that by August the U.S. border with Canada is open again, so Canadians who come to the fair can enjoy the playing of their national anthem as well as “O Say Can You See.” After 2020’s cancellation, the fair was able to reschedule for 2021 all of the acts that were lined up. to enter the speakeasy.” On Monday, all first-responders can get into the fair gratis and on Wednesday the honor goes to all veterans, and there will be some additional tribute to these heroes of service. Cleanliness? The fair follows guidance of the Global Bio-Risk Advisory Council to be sure everything is safeand-healthy clean. Yes, the 10-days move is a big deal for the Northwest Washington Fair, but with good buy-in and preparation on everyone’s part, it can happen with flying colors, Pickering believes. “When people learn all the details, they’re just really excited,” he said.
Amanda Stidham, new exhibits supervisor County fairs are an event that bring friends, families and visitors together. So many people come to show off their animals, win ribbons, see, and learn about the animals. It’s events like the fair that many families plan their schedules around each year. Due to COVID so many people missed that in 2020 — which means people are eager and excited to get back to the fair, show off their hard work and attend one of the greatest community events around. The continuous support and excitement from our 38
youth and community about the 10-day fair makes my job exhilarating. The 10-day fair expansion brings endless possibilities and opportunities to our 4-H, FFA and Open Class exhibitors. It will allow more room for the animals and more exhibitors the opportunity to participate. I became the Competitive Exhibits Supervisor in 2019. I am also the Livestock Coordinator, a new role created in 2020. My role is to oversee the exhibits and exhibitors, assist our superintendents with their entries, premiums, questions, set up and ensure a smooth transition for the duration of the fair. Our schedule for animals in a “split show” is based on feedback from those closely involved in the livestock divisions of our fair. The first five days we will have the 4-H and Open Class Dairy Cattle, 4-H Pygmy Goats, Pack Goats, Poultry, Llamas, Open Class Youth Swine. The second five days we will have the FFA Dairy Cattle, Open, FFA and 4-H Beef Cattle, All Meat Goats, Dairy Goats, FFA Pygmy Goats, 4-H and FFA Sheep, All Rabbits, FFA and 4-H Market Hogs. The first six days we will have 4-H Light Horse followed by the last four days of Open Class Light Horse. 4-H Dogs will be the first four days and 4-H Cats will be the final three days.

Welcome New REsidents A wonderful program offered by the Lynden Chamber of Commerce is the Welkom Basket. This program was put in place to welcome new residents to town and is a great tool for them to get to know their new home. Each basket is filled with coupons and gifts from local businesses and is personally delivered to the residents by our wonderful Lynden Ambassadors, Virgi Diephuis and Ada Voskuilen. During their visits, Virgi and Ada share about Lynden, and also take that time to get to know each new family, giving us the ability to discover why they moved here, and what they are looking for. Ada chose to retire in July 2020 after 25 years as Lynden’s original Welkom Basket presenter. This program has proven to be an invaluable tool in helping us make the families feel welcome, and it is also the chance for the new residents to get to know Lynden and be reminded why this is such a great place to live. It also gives our members a chance to get information about their business out to the community in a fun and inviting way.
