Step behind the scenes of the City of Lynden’s signature events
LYNDEN — While the tree-lined Front Street and the myriad of summer flower baskets bring color that delight locals and visitors alike, everything comes to life during Lynden’s signature events.
With supportive businesses and a great many volunteers, small town Lynden doesn’t seem so small when community events invite the citizenship and general public to enjoy an array of festivals and events: the Farmers Day Parade, NW Raspberry Festival, The Great Lynden Trick or “Dutch” Treat, and the Lighted Christmas Parade.
With a look at recent history, the Lynden
Chamber of Commerce was happy to welcome as many as 30,000 fans as it offered roughly 750 half gallons of vanilla ice cream and about one ton of raspberries. The hot weather made the treat ever that much more highly sought and tasty.
Sixty-seven vendors lined Front Street and side streets for the summer’s NW Raspberry Festival in the Street Fair, Kids Zone, and Food Court. Known colloquially as Razz Fest, 250 teams jumped, ran and shot hoop with family and fans cheering them on a year ago. This year plan to bring the whole family and come early to enjoy each activity including the pancake breakfast at the Lynden Senior Center, replete with mounds of raspberries and whipping cream.
For anyone who wants other entertainment, 332 cars registered for last year’s adjacent car show (Saturday only), sponsored by Lynden Lube and 11 bands of different genres played live music. Within the Razz Fest alone 30 to 40
volunteers stepped up to give of their time to make sure everyone received their ice cream and safely got their cars in and out of the showing area.
As the Lynden Chamber’s marketing and events coordinator, Sheila Wood has enjoyed her job.
“Our event sponsors are so important,” Wood said. “For each event, we have sponsors that contribute, helping us to succeed. We couldn’t do it without them.”
One volunteer, who seems to be everywhere throughout the year, is Vickie Crane. Wood said that Crane is “amazing and participates in so many community events in Lynden and we couldn’t do without her.”
Wood, who worked with events in other parts of Whatcom County, was attracted to being part of the Chamber’s office full time and thinks Lynden is set apart by the excited participants, volunteers, and sponsoring businesses.
One local long-time sponsor is Peoples Bank which presents The Farmers Day Parade. Others are Whatcom Educational Credit Union (WECU) for Razz Fest and
Northwest Pacific Concrete Pumping for the Lighted Parade.
Lynden Music Festival has brought world-class talent, at affordable prices, to the city each October, with a few other events popping up, including a Christmas community song sing. Music has consisted of the blues, worship tunes, piano, swing dancing and even Cuban Salsa music for dancing along to. Officially known as the Claire de Lune Music Festival, Lynden Music Festival celebrates all genres of music. Originally from Finland, Director Terhi Miikki-Broersma plays piano, organ or accordion during the festival.
This year, the Northwest Washington Fair will be held Aug. 8-17. Ride the rides, eat fair food, listen to up-and-coming performers as well as old favorites. Mark your calendar for 2024:
• June 1 at 10:30 a.m. is the Lynden Farmers Day Parade. The parade route is along tree-lined Front Street from 10th to 3rd streets. See cars, bands, tractors, trucks and plenty of people.
• July 19-20 is the NW Raspberry Festival, which includes the Curt Maberry 3-on-3 Memorial Classic basketball tournament, Berry Fair Street Market, Berry Delicious Food Court, Kids Zone, Kids Scavenger Hunt and more!
• July 31 through Aug. 3 is Vintage Farming Days at Berthusen Park’s farming section along the road. For a small entry fee, spend the day, or all the days at the event. On Thursday, Aug. 1, the event is free to veterans and first responders. The 2024 feature tractor will be the Allis-Chalmers. An hour-long parade takes place each day with folks young and old driving vintage tractors and blowing steam whistles. Children can also play games.
• Aug. 8-17, the Northwest Washington Fair will bring thousands of visitors to see the Small Animal Experience with baby farm animals, as well as 4-H and FFA exhibits, vendors, a rodeo, hypnotists and musicians.
• Oct. 5-6, the Lynden Lions Club will host the Model Train and Toy Show with more than 50,000 square feet of model train layouts, exhibits and vendors at the fairgrounds. www.lyndentrainshow.com.
• Oct. 9-13 the annual Lynden Music Festival will be at different venues on and near Front Street. www.lyndenmusicfestival.com.
• Oct. 31 from 2-5 p.m. is the annual Trick or Dutch Treat. Plenty of scary good treats along Front Street and through the city for kids 13 and under. Visit the participating Chamber members marked by pumpkin orange cones.
• Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. is the annual Northwest Lighted Christmas Parade from Fairway Shopping Center along Front Street through downtown.

New faces at longstanding businesses
Lynden is a place of multiple generations starting and carrying on traditions. This includes the business realm. Two of those businesses are side by side in the Fairway Center.
Dave’s Sports Shop has gone through a few changes and updates in recent years. At 1738 Front St., Dave’s switched hands from Dave and Claudia VanderHoek to Will and Jenn Lathrop close to two years ago.
Once known as Jude’s Sporting Goods and Housewares back in 1957 by Dave’s parents, Jude and Gert VanderHoek, the store was moved to this present location in April 2007.
With the move the store has a full line of apparel, archery gear, fishing and hunting gear, and athletic supplies. Customers come from throughout Whatcom County and the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.
The Lathrops took ownership of the shop on May 1, 2022. The family trained under Dave and Claudia.
“Becoming the owners of Dave’s Sports Shop was something that we talked about and prayed through,” Will said. “After meeting with a few advisors, we had the confidence to commit our family to this adventure.”
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Will has been an active outdoorsman for years. He primarily hunts deer and elk but also enjoys high country bear hunting on occasion. With his experience with rifle and bowhunting, Will brings that to the store.

Will has been getting more into waterfowl hunting and is an avid fisherman and firearms owner. Jenn, not a hunter or fisherperson, played soccer and volleyball and been a personal trainer in Canada. She also owns and operates an online training business called The Healthy Mom Academy.
Within the store, the Lathrops will also expand not only supplies but in-store classes and workshops – and product lines to support that.
“Our intent is to continue to serve the community as Dave and Claudia have done and to continue to meet the needs of Whatcom County hunters and adventurists,” Jenn said. Dave and Claudia may very well be sitting in the coffee area in the back of the store where community members can sit and visit in
comfortable seats with coffee mugs.

Lynden Ace Hardware
Adjacent to Dave’s Sports Shop at 1736 Front St., Lynden Ace Hardware has also passed to a new generation of owners from Dean Hendricks to Brandon York.
Recently York and his staff won a Lynden Tribune Readers’ Choice award for best in the community for customer service.
From a background of yearning to have his own store at age 12, York worked in the grocery industry.

Being deemed an essential service, Lynden Ace Hardware stepped up to help the community and lead in customer service with its staff of about two dozen.
When an adjacent computer business closed, Ace moved into that space to expand. In the spring, an array of annuals line tents for loyal customers to select for their baskets. In the fall and winter, the store moves from fans to heaters to meet the needs of the community.
Previously, the York family owned a distributorships, a pressure washing company, and everything was geared toward customer service.

Christian school on the Guide Meridian north of Lynden cultivates a sense of belonging
Ebenezer Christian School is the little country school north of Lynden that has lasted almost 115 years. Except that it isn’t so little anymore, and it’s looking as much to the future as to the past.
Ebenezer is pushing its limits with more than 180 students, so much so that it’s not necessary to advertise the school anymore -just let the good word spread, says Jim Buss, in his 28th year as principal. With his own three children through the P-8 school, he now enjoys seeing grandchildren there.
The school still fronts onto busy Guide Meridian Road heading to the Canada border. Behind the core of four original classrooms have been built multiple additions in recent years to handle the growth. When you count in preschool, art, music and the gym for PE,
there are now 13 classrooms, including a few portables.
What fuels this school spirit and surge? “You come here to belong,” Buss says of Ebenezer. You don’t just drop off your child to let the teachers do the rest. “You’re involved.”
The principal predicted as high as 80% turnout of all families for the spring society meeting. It takes volunteers to put on the annual dinner and auction event that raises money for the school, likewise for the Christmas baked goods sale that is well-known in the Lynden community.
Participating in a grounds clean-up day each August and then monthly school cleaning lets parents build bonds with each other and “get some money back,” Buss said, on a tuition bill that otherwise pushes $12,000 for two children at Ebenezer.
The school believes in the meaning of the Ebenezer word in the Bible, “Thus far has the Lord helped us.” There comes a time when even things in the budget, Buss said, are “based on
the good graces of the Lord.”
Although Ebenezer might have served the close vicinity at first, its three bus routes today go well out toward Sumas, Birch Bay and elsewhere in the county. Over the years, the eighth-grade graduates of Ebenezer have been about evenly split in going on to either Christian or public high schools, and Buss said there is a pride that Ebenezer kids usually excel in academic performance.
Some changes are afoot for the six acres of property. If the society approves and all county permitting hurdles are cleared, Ebenezer hopes to be building a new gym soon, which also means repurposing the old gym and removing the portables.
Those are big steps for a small school that has long relied on faith and frugality. Every single family in the Ebenezer family is valuable as these kinds of decisions and accompanying budgets are made, the principal said.
Buss can sometimes see a young child’s resemblance to a family that has been many generations at Ebenezer, making clear the legacy of history back to 1910. But at the same time he is happy to welcome every new family that discovers Ebenezer and chooses it for their children for the first time.

It was in 1978 that Lynden Door put up its first building in Lynden and started manufacturing and selling wood doors in the Pacific Northwest market.
Founder John Bargen had already proven his entrepreneurial success with woodworking and carpentry businesses in lower British Columbia going back to the 1940s. Along with starting Lynden Door, the Bargen family came into Whatcom County to establish the Cedar Springs Christian Retreat Center in the Sumas

Lynden Door has grown considerably over the years, but the focus has remained the same with “Honor God in All We Do” and “Help Grow and Develop People,” all while crafting highquality interior doors. Employing hundreds of people from across Whatcom County, Lynden Door offers a variety of career opportunities, from general production positions in manufacturing and millwork to more specialized areas like finance, engineering and technology.
The Lynden Door Family of Companies includes Lynden Door Inc. (door manufacturing), Alliance Door Products (door distribution), Lynden Door Trucking (transportation solutions), Source Engineering (engineering and fabrication), Victory Millwork (wood components and millwork), and Glacier Mouldings (wood components and millwork) all of which support the company’s core values and continued growth.
Alliance Door Products began in 2002 as a distribution company, and now branches extend outward from Washington and British Columbia to Oregon, Utah, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario. It is likely that when traveling the interstates of the West, you will see a Lynden Door or Alliance Door Products semi or two on the highway with you. Lynden Door Trucking became its own division of the company in 2007.
In 2010 Victory Millwork was added to produce and supply door components. Founded in 2015, Source Engineering started to design and build manufacturing equipment. The most
recent addition, Glacier Mouldings, joined the family in January 2024.
A separate non-profit, The Technic Training Center, was opened in 2016 with a vision to train and mentor high school-age students in woodworking skills and the foundations of manufacturing, working in collaboration with local schools and educators.
While manufacturing doors is what Lynden Door does, its core values and team members set the company apart. Supporting the growth of its team members is at the heart of Lynden Door, which led them to establish a Chaplaincy program in 2007. Today, there are three Chaplains on staff.

Northwest Washington Fair, Heritage Museum, Community/Senior Center a fabric of Lynden’s outreach
Lynden Community/ Senior Center
In 1965, Dorothy Verduin founded and spearheaded the opening of the Lynden Senior Center after the passage of the Older American Act.
With help from Whatcom County, as well as the City of Lynden and many of its residents, the Lynden Community/Senior Center opened on April 7, 1970 on Grover Street in the former Peoples State Bank Building.
As Jen Lautenbach said recently, the center’s opening “began the long tradition of serving older adults in our community.”
“While the physical location has changed, our mission remains the same,” said Lautenbach, the center’s manager and executive director since September 2020 when she took over for Cathi LeCocq. “We promote the healthy aging, independence, and well-being of older adults in our community.”
Weekdays, the center offers a hot meal at lunch, as well as fitness classes, art and enrichment classes, educational programs, entertainment and a place to meet friends and enjoy a cup of coffee.
“We provide a welcoming environment that people enjoy being part of and offer a wide variety of programming that appeals to a broad interest,” Lautenbach said. “People stay connected to each other and our community

Northwest Washington Fair
Since 1911, The Northwest Washington Fair and Event Center has served the community for numerous activities, including but not only the annual Northwest Washington Fair. Fair Manager Selena Burgess, said the mission of the Northwest Washington Fair is to provide education regarding agriculture, past, present and future; experiences with positive competition; enjoyment of wholesome entertainment, social interactions and lasting memories.
“Each of our core values help us work toward fulfilling our mission annually, especially at the Fair in August,” Burgess said. “Youth are our number one core value and are important when it comes to preserving traditions.”
Burgess explained that the young people who exhibit at the fair are the ones who build the traditions and memories that pass from generation to generation.
“You can see this happening each summer as you watch a young woman or man exhibit their project and look at those who are supporting them,” Burgess said. “Often it’s parents or grandparents who had been exhibitors themselves and passed on the tradition to others in their family.”
According to Burgess, the fair’s tradition promotes “an appreciation for our agricultural heritage as well as education about the role agriculture plays in life today.”
“The fair is a gathering place where the community can connect each year and where people of all ages can be entertained,” Burgess said. “The tradition of attending or participating in the Northwest Washington Fair is one that I
hope each member of our community and beyond get to experience.”

Lynden Heritage Museum
Since 1976, the mission of the Lynden Heritage Museum has been to preserve the community’s history and heritage. Amanda May, the museum’s executive director, said LHM achieves this by supporting educational programs, creating meaningful exhibits that connect all generations with our history and promote opportunities that allow us to engage with our community.
“Our constant endeavor is to be the destination where individuals come to discover their heritage and strive to instill our rich traditions into future generations, ensuring that our heritage remains alive and cherished among our children,” May said. “We aim to actively teach young learners these traditions, fostering a deep connection to their roots and empowering them to carry our legacy forward with pride. Here, memories of the past reside, and we’re honored to be the ones entrusted to preserve the history of individuals and families who preceded us.”
May explained that the museum continues to uphold traditions by offering our community the chance to connect with the history that encapsulates their own traditions.
“While these traditions are embedded in our heritage, they belong to the people of Lynden,” May said. “This building is here to keep them prominently displayed, ensuring that future generations understand how our ancestors shaped their futures.”
On more than one occasion each year, the Lynden Heritage Museum transforms into a gathering place that breathes life into traditions of the past.
“It is of utmost importance to us to create occasions that unite all generations in sharing our heritage, through events that highlight specific periods in our history,” May said. “During these events and activities, hundreds or even thousands of individuals come together to celebrate and reminisce about our past. It is during these times that memories are shared and traditions are passed down to the next generation.”
