From the Director, Cathi LeCocq Time changes things, but time also cherishes the way things were. We are not your gramma’s senior center, because you are not your gram or gramps and you want different things from a community/ senior center! Some things are timeless though and need to be continued. Honoring the past however, shouldn’t hold us back from being open to new options. Trying new things means risking an imperfect result that you then learn from and improve on; but not trying at all means you become stagnant and dated. Sometimes you have to just put one foot in front of the other and move forward. Join with us on the journey ahead!
From the Board... Board members do the business of the board, but committees do the projects of the board. Each board member is on at least one committee, but the Fundraising, Building, Program, Membership and Volunteer committees are open to anyone! The Fundraiser committee just held a very successful Garage Sale and the Membership Committee held a quarterly new member orientation. The Program Committee will be working on a very special celebration in June for everyone married 50 years or more. If you have ideas for classes, activities or entertainment – bring it to the Program Committee. If you have ideas for fundraising - suggest it to the Fundraising Committee. If you have thoughts about possible facility improvements – talk to the Building Committee. Ways to attract new members and volunteers – there’s a committee for that too! Share your ideas & energy and get involved!

Center News & Events Great entertainment this month! Eric Hirst returns to play his saxophone on May 3. On May 7, Shereen will fill everyone in on her 2-month-long medical leave ‘Odyssey’. May 10 we have Richard Tucker singing old time favorites accompanied with guitar. On May 17 we have a very special program with Bill DeGroot and then on May 24 it will be Al Ulrich on slide guitar. Then for something completely different, we have Troy Luginbill from the Lynden Pioneer Museum on May 31 to talk about prohibition days in and around the county.
Did we have fun at our second annual Indoor Community Garage Sale? We had a hoot, and we raised a lot of money! Close to $2000, including the sales of the donated lawn furniture from Worldmark Birch Bay!!!
...and we sure had fun singing along with Rodney’s Jammers from the Blaine Senior Center!

Please and Thank You... Center Needs Our Garage Sale was so successful we now have nothing left for our next Silent Auction! If you are still cleaning out or downsizing, continue to bring in not-too-large items in good shape, and we will find a new home for them through our monthly fundraiser auctions. Keep those sweet things coming! (No, we don’t mean your adorable grandchildren, but we do need goodies for your sweet tooth!) Many thanks to those who have been bringing in candy dish and Coffee Bar treats! They are much appreciated by almost everyone who comes in the door.
Center Gifts Thank you to Maurice Veenstra for sponsoring a hanging flower basket from Van Wingerden’s Nursery. These are ordered through the Downtown Lynden Business Association every year and the price includes water and fertilizing all season long. Thanks also to everyone who bought tickets in the March raffle for Claire vg Theatre tickets. Proceeds from the raffle paid for the third basket we ordered. Thank you to everyone who donated items for our annual Community-wide Indoor Garage Sale and also everyone who worked so hard preparing and running the sale. The sale raised almost $2000 which included table rentals, coffee bar and garage sale as well as the after sale and sales of the donated lawn chairs.

Many thanks to Bette Strandgard and Cathy Humphrey for taking on the huge task of cleaning out and organizing the seasonal decorations upstairs. Job well done! Wonderful entertainment last month from the Washboard Trio, with great sounds from a for real washboard instrument!
You never know who will show up at one of our fundraisers! (Or who might pop up in the background) 9
Member/Volunteer of the Month Terry Visser Many of you may not know him yet, but Terry is our faithful Monday North Route meal delivery driver. He has been filling that volunteer spot for a number of years now. The other thing Terry does to give generously of his time is to teach a free Acrylic Painting class at the center on Monday afternoons when he gets back from his meal route. Terry provides all the materials and instruction for experienced painters as well as making it fun and rewarding for those that have never held a brush before! Terry is always looking for more folks he can share his love of painting with, so if you’ve always wanted to try your hand at being a painter drop in on Monday afternoons about 1:30 and let Terry show you how to use simple techniques to create expert looking results!
Volunteer Appreciation Event – Thursday, May 23, 12:30 p.m Postponed from last month. If you have volunteered for the center in the last year, please sign up for this lunch and recognition program in your honor! There will be no charge for the lunch for our dedicated volunteers, however you must sign up ahead of time. We want to recognize all our great volunteers and all the hours they contribute. This is just one good reason to record your hours. It also helps us with funding requests.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Please see Cathi if interested. Additional Office, Kitchen prep and Dish washing volunteers are needed. Occasional substitutes are needed in all areas, including Coffee bar and Meal delivery. Flyer Distributors still needed! Before any fund raiser or special event, we need people who will post flyers to get the word out. You can choose a part of town to do or just pick up a few to post at your church or other location. Needed before each monthly Saturday breakfast and other events also. (Thank you! Holly and Marita for papering the town with flyers for the Garage Sale.) 10
