In 1972, Title IX was passed and it opened the door for young women to compete in organized high school sports around the country. Harriet “Penny” NielsenHowlett was the first coach in history to lead the Nooksack Valley girls basketball team in 1972. Nielsen-Howlett was a 1956 graduate of Nooksack Valley and a 1960 graduate of Western Washington University. But It did not take long for her to get called back to the valley as she was hired right out of college to teach
