Whitman signs with SPU

The 2A tourney MVP will play his senior year now for Lynden By Eric Trent sports@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Lynden High School senior Clayton Whitman signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, Nov. 14, to play basketball at Seattle Pacific University. In front of 30 relatives, friends and coaches in the high school library, Clayton said he doesn’t like the spotlight, but is grateful for the opportunities and help he’s gotten along the way. “Happy that everyone’s here,” Clayton said. “It’s really nice to see everyone in one room that’s been there for me my whole life.” The 6-foot-4 forward had been considering both SPU and Point Loma Nazarene University until he announced on
Twitter Oct. 29 that he was verbally committing to SPU. “It’s good to get it officially out of the way,” Clayton said. “Now it’s completely out of my mind. I can just focus on basketball season.” Clayton’s signing comes after his junior year for the Lynden Lions was cut short when he broke his wrist in a preseason jamboree. He healed in time to return for the postseason and helped the Lions win their ninth boys basketball state title, capped by a 57-53 win over W.F. West in March. He was named tournament MVP after averaging 17 points per game, including dropping exactly 17 in the title match. Grant Leep, men’s basketball coach at SPU, said he’s thrilled to have a player of Clayton’s caliber be part of his 2019 recruiting class. “We’ve kept a close eye on Clayton for the past few years and love the effort and energy he plays with,” Leep said. “He has the size we love at his position, and plays a style that fits our system well.”
Leep said Lynden coach Brian Roper’s understanding of the Falcons’ program is one of the reasons that brought Clayton to the university’s attention. “Clayton is the type of student we want to have in our program,” Leep said. “He is driven on the floor and off.” Clayton’s father, Marty Whitman, said that up until a couple of years ago he never thought something like this could happen for his son. “It’s been a fun ride. My favorite part is all the people we’ve met. Parents, all the kids down in Seattle and a rotating group of teammates the last few years,” dad said. Clayton’s mother, Sarah Whitman, fought back emotions, saying he’s made the most of every opportunity he’s been given over the years. He never let anything hold him back, she said. “It’s insane. It’s amazing. I am beyond proud of him,” Sarah said. “It’s been a lot of hard work and he’s put it in. He’s determined, and he’s earned every bit of this.”

DREAM TEAM Lynden Christian standouts Cole Bajema and Isabela Hernandez return to defend their titles
WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW
Cole Bajema shines under bright lights By Eric Trent sports@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Few high school basketball players get the chance to play at a Division I school. Even fewer make it to a Power 5 school. So what are the chances of a Class 1A boys basketball player signing with Michigan, a storied college program currently undefeated and ranked No. 5 in the nation? It’s almost unheard of. For Lynden Christian senior Cole Bajema, it’s a dream come true. Bajema, a slim 6-foot7 wing, signed his National Letter of Intent with Michigan on Nov. 14, making
Lynden Tribune | December 12, 2018 | Ferndale Record
him the first 1A Northwest Conference basketball player to sign with a Power 5 school. “It’s my dream school and I’m glad to be going there next year,” Bajema said. “It’s a big relief.” Bajema is the first Whatcom County boys basketball player to sign with a Power 5 school since 2000 when Luke Ridnour signed with the University of Oregon. He’s also just the fourth Class 1A boys basketball player from Washington State to to sign with a Power 5 conference program. Chelan’s Phil Cullen signed with Utah in 1998; Chelan’s Joe Harris signed with Virginia in 2010; and Vashon Island’s John Gage went to Stanford in 2009. It was a whirlwind of See Bajema, page 3n B3
Potent jumper carried Isabela Hernandez By Eric Trent sports@lyndentribune.com
LYNDEN — Staring out her parents’ car window, San Diego State University comes into view and a young Isabela Hernandez’ eyes light up. She remembers it clearly. “I would always tell my parents, ‘mom, dad, I really want to play there,’” said Hernandez, a senior basketball star at Lynden Christian High School. Her family has been taking trips down to San Diego since she was a kid. They’d always drive by SDSU’s campus and Hernandez knew that was where she wanted to go to college

when she got older. So when SDSU texted her one night after playing in an AAU tourney down in Salem, Oregon, she was floored. They wanted to offer her a scholarship. “When they started recruiting me, it was crazy,” Hernandez said. “I couldn’t believe it.” It was a blindsiding moment for Hernandez, who was an all-state honorable mention selection in 2017 while helping the Lyncs go 29-0 en route to winning the 2017 Class 1A state title. Hernandez and SDSU had zero contact before that text. In the only AAU tourney of her career, playing with ECBA Swish out of Seattle, she saw their scouts watching the championship game she played See Hernandez, page 3n B3

an offseason for Bajema., who started the AAU circuit this summer as an unranked two-star prospect before skyrocketing to a current four-star prospect ranked No. 58 in the nation by 247Sports scouts. He’s the third-overall prospect in Washington state. But for Bajema, Michigan was an easy choice. It’s where his dad grew up. “I always followed in the footsteps of what my dad liked,” Bajema said. “So I’ve followed [Michigan] since I was young. I enjoy watching them. Now that I get to go there next years, it’s super exciting.” One game into the 2018-19 season, Cole is already seeing the effects of being a high-profile athlete. In the Lyncs’ 90-78 win over La Center on Dec. 1, the Wildcats sent an extra guy to shadow him. All that did was open the floor up for his teammates so Bajema could hit them on outlets. “They were definitely shading a little bit,” Bajema said. “It made my job easier when Jaden DeBoer was open to hit a few 3s.” It’s an illustration of the type of player and person Bajema is. His humility is what helped fuel the success of a team that won the 2017 1A state championship in March, Lyncs coach Roger DeBoer said. And it’s that selflessness that has won over his coaches and teammates, too. “That’s one of the coolest things about his story,” DeBoer said. “Some-
body that has experienced the success Cole has could easily become full of themselves. He is so the opposite of that.” Bajema is also patient with the underclassmen. He doesn’t get frustrated when a play doesn’t go as planned. Instead, he works with his teammates to help them elevate their game. “He has such a laid-back mentality, which is one of the reasons he plays so well under pressure,” DeBoer said. “The younger guys really look up to him.” DeBoer is comfortable knowing the ball is in Bajema’s hands when the game is on line — and it’s been that way since Bajema was a sophomore. “Cole seems to be at his best when the lights are the brightest,” DeBoer said. Perhaps his most dangerous weapon on the court isn’t the silky-smooth jumpshot, or the explosive first step — it’s his mindset. “There’s not a moment too big for him,” DeBoer said. “He’s obviously skilled. The kid is a phenomenal player.” For Bajema, he’s enjoying the time he has left as a Lync while he still can. He’ll be heading to even bigger and brighter lights in Ann Arbor, Michigan, soon enough. But for now, the 2017 Class 1A Player of the Year has one more season to make his mark. “Now I just get to play my senior season with teammates that I love playing with,” Bajema said.
in and it made her nervous. She never expected to actually hear from them. “It felt like all my hard work had finally paid off,” Hernandez said. “It made me want to work even harder.” Hernandez, a first-team alltournament selection at state and all-Northwest Conference pick, verbally committed to SDSU on May 6 and signed her National Letter of Intent on Nov. 15. Now, she can just look forward to her final season as a Lync. “Now I can just play stress-free and have fun,” Hernandez said. Her rise to the D-I level has been fueled by training outside of regular team practices. She spends at least one hour every day after practice shooting on her personal court in her backyard, while her father, Juan Hernandez, rebounds every one of her 500 weekly shots. “He helped me perfect the form of my shot,” Hernandez said. “He spent a lot of hours with me.” Those extra shots have added up. Hernandez, a slender 6-foot-2 wing, scorches opponents with a devastating jump shot. Hernandez connected on 50 percent of her shots from the field, averaging 13 points and 5.3 rebounds per game as a junior. She was 88 percent on free-throws. Lynden Christian coach Brady Bomber says her jump shot is one of her greatest strengths on the court. “Isabela has a beautiful jump shot with the ability to make baskets from anywhere on the floor,” Bomber said. She primarily relied on her jump shot as a freshman, Bomber says, but has now expanded her skills to all facets of the game. She can play and guard all five positions. “Isabela is a very unselfish teammate,” Bomber said. “She is the kind of teammate that willingly makes the extra pass, helps her teammate up off the ground, thanks the passer after she scores a basket and celebrates the success of everyone else on her team.” Now in her final season season as a Lync, Hernandez will work to help the Lyncs defend their state title. The Lyncs are 2-0 to start the 2018-19 season, with wins over Archbishop Murphy and Edmonds-Woodway on Nov. 28 and 30. For Hernandez, she’ll just take it one game at a time. Now that she’s signed on with her dream school, she looks forward to soaking in her final year as a Lync.
