They are developing and implementing new technologies and integrating existing ones in every sphere of its activity, from maximising recovery of oil and gas from existing resources and unlocking new resources, to providing new and cleaner fuels and lubricants. Shell Lubricants was recognised as the global market leader for 12 consecutive years in October 2018.* This significant award continues over two decades of undisputed industry leadership. Technology leadership in lubrication means excelling in three key areas: 1. Innovation of new technologies, products and services - For over 70 years, Shell have made significant annual investments in research and development and recruited world-class scientists to enable them to create some of the most advanced lubricant products available. 2. Application support by field experts, providing front-line lubrication advice – Shell have over 350 technical advisors and Product Application Specialists working daily with thousands of customers, providing lubrication solutions that deliver value. 3. Partnerships with leading OEMs, customers and institutions – Shell collaborate with customers across industries, enabling their team to test their products in some of the most demanding conditions, and have close links with over 150 industry bodies and academic institutions. The knowledge gained because of these collaborations helps Shell to remain at the forefront of technology. Shell Lubricants work closely with the leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to develop products that meet their requirements in terms of protection and performance. 6 TOP TIPS TO SELECT THE RIGHT GREASE 1. Use a grease with properties as recommended by the Original Equipment Manufacturer. The OEM has usually tested the application with the correct greases. 2. Choose a grease with the correct base oil viscosity as specified by the OEM. Higher loads require higher base oil viscosities. 3. Choose a grease with the correct additives for the application. Moly is always a good choice in pins and bushes with high sliding contact. 4. Use a grease that can handle the operating temperature range and loads. A high temperature grease may be required in hot, ambient conditions. 5. Check grease compatibility before mixing greases. For example, clay based greases are not compatible with lithium complex based greases. 6. To prevent moisture and dust contamination, always store greases in sealed containers in cool and dry conditions. Contamination can promote rust and wear.

REDUCING FERROUS METAL PARTICLES IN A COMPLEX HYDRAULIC SYSTEM Our Group Engineering team were approached by a client who operates a rail based transfer system comprising of trestles and transfer bogies to facilitate vessel movements around a Common User facility. This transfer system consists of a diesel engine driving a series of hydraulic pumps which link to 38 transfer bogies requiring approximately 2500 litres of biodraulic oil. The site was concerned with the amount of ferrous metal particles found in the system during routine oil analysis and
cleanliness levels which they could not control using off-line kidney loop filtration. Our Group Engineering Specialists suggested fitting an OEI magnetic scrubber to the return line of the system where the oil is returned back into the tank. This would remove both ferrous and non-ferrous particles from the system stopping the cycle “wear creating more wear”. After 100 hours of operation the 9” x 1” earth magnet was removed from the scrubber and found to contain large amounts of ferrous particles (as per the attached images).

A kidney loop filtration cart was hired to the site which contained high capacity filter elements which over a one month period was able to reduce the particle count (by ISO 4406) to lower than the recommendation for a complex hydraulic. Our Engineering team were also able to recommend modifications to the clients kidney loop system so that they have been able to control the cleanliness levels themselves in house.

WHY SHOULD YOU RELY ON ROCOL FOODLUBE® TO KEEP YOUR PRODUCTS SAFE? We are sure you’re aware it is essential to ensure that all of the applications in your plant are correctly lubricated. This stops unnecessary downtime and keeps your parts running to their optimum level saving you time and money. However, in the Food & Beverage industry it can be difficult to make sure that there is little to no contamination when it comes to lubrication and maintenance of machinery. This is due to not just making the right selection, but also ensuring the correct dosage is given at the required intervals. Too much lubrication given will endanger the seals protecting the bearings when the necessary task of post-production wash down is carried out. The very nature of the end-product means that lubricants used must be nontoxic and completely compliant with food safety standards. This is where ROCOL’s FOODLUBE® range steps in.

This range can offer peace of mind when it comes to the running of your food processing plant, and here are some reasons to prove it: 1. NSF, HACCP and ISO 21469 certified with total compliance This means that all FOODLUBE® products are safe to use around goods that will be ingested. This means they are made from FDA approved products that do not contain ingredients with animal derived materials: nut oils, soya, dairy or genetically modified ingredients whilst also being Halal and Kosher. 2. High quality to keep machines running ROCOL greases and lubricants are all extensively tested and will only be released when they have met the high standards of quality and performance ROCOL expect from all their products. The high quality will help to provide longer intervals between lubrication and reduce the frequency of gear box oil replacement. 3. DETEX ROCOL use DETEX technology in plastic caps and actuators on their FOODLUBE® aerosol products. DETEX makes plastic components metal detectable, meaning that if any caps or other plastic packaging get lost or dropped in/around food product, it can be detected by metal detecting machines. 4. Rationalisation/Simplification In many cases ROCOL offers significant cost downs through product rationalisation. One recent site to take
ROCOL lubricants on board were able to rationalise their lubrication stores from 22 products/8 brands down to 14 ROCOL products, thereby reducing overall store holdings.
