A LIFETIME COMMITMENT A new year brings with it renewed optimism - something we could all use more of these days. Over the past two years, we have endured changes that overwhelmed our daily lives and will likely continue for many years to come. Our personal lives have been disrupted, our businesses have been forced to adjust, and many employees have reassessed their professional and personal lives. Working remotely is now commonplace for many. Communication by Zoom is a daily routine. Ordering online is constant. I am amazed how quickly our recycle bins fill up with discarded cardboard shipping containers. (Is this an environmentally safe future, I ask myself?) During the pandemic we had time to think, to reflect, to ponder and to change our lives. I would argue this has caused all of us to reconsider the truth of the old adage, “the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.” We have seen this in our staffing at Willis Allen Real Estate, as well. For 108 years, we have enjoyed the loyal commitment of our agents and staff. Certainly, no one person has been employed this whole time, but we have many who have devoted their business life to Willis Allen Real Estate for 10, 20, 30 years and more. Why? Flat and squat, with a one-of-a-kind conch shaped spire jutting from its roof, the building served as San Diego’s welcome center for all travelers driving southbound on Interstate 5. Decades later, however, the building would fall into neglect and disrepair as real estate development in San Diego continued both outward and upward. What was once an icon of a bygone era eventually sat unattended.

The renovated building now serves many functions: there is a coffee shop for beachgoers, a rental shop for those looking to enjoy the afternoon on a cruiser or stand up paddleboard, and an event space for private parties or corporate events. As if that weren’t enough, there is even a small vineyard on the property that will eventually produce house-bottled wine for its new restaurant, called Picnic, which is slated to open sometime in 2022.
