Baci Ristorante is such a San Diegan staple, that it can be tempting to take it for granted. First opened in 1979, the interior ambiance is reflective of the establishment’s longstanding success. Solid wood furniture and molding adorn the foyer upon walking in, rubbed and polished to a patina that only 4 decades of existence can achieve. In a nutshell, Baci is elegant in a way that the nouveau restaurants in our area can only aspire to be over time.

Baci’s standard of service among waitstaff has remained steadfast during its tenure. Servers still don a tailored white jacket- paired with black slacks- at the start of each shift, and their knowledge of the menu is comprehensive. Request their suggestion from the menu, and they’ll quickly ask a few key questions to hone in on what your tastebuds are calling for that evening.

With all of their pedigree, Baci still manages to delight even their longest-standing patrons with specials that make their way to the menu each evening. In the past, we’ve called ahead to ask for abalone and, more often than not, the request is filled. Famously, sea urchin has become a recurring staple of their specials menu.

Jean-Michel Diot is the chef and restaurateur behind one of La Jolla’s most beloved eateries, Bistro du Marché. Mr. Diot’s experience borders on other-worldly: nearly 4 decades ago, he was in the French kitchen of La Pyramide, a 3-star Michelin restaurant once regarded as the best restaurant in a country known for its high standards for cuisine. By the mid-1980s, he was chef of a 2-star Michelin restaurant in Cannes, after which point he moved to New York City and opened several perfectly-rated restaurants in the United States.

By the turn of the century, he traveled even further from his native home and opened Tapenade in La Jolla. Tapenade, by all accounts, was among the best restaurants in San Diego during its reign. By 2015, however, Tapenade was forced to close its doors- much to the chagrin of San Diegans. It wasn’t long, however, before he opened its successor: Bistro du Marché.

To know the food there is to know the man behind it. Each dish is meticulously prepared and presented with a sense of perfection and seasoned expertise. Mr. Diot sources many of his materials from the local farmers market held steps from the restaurant, every Sunday.

We cannot recommend one single menu item, because each of them are delicious in their own unique ways. We can, however, make two very strong recommendations: make a reservation and go. Our bet is that you’ll be planning your next meal there before you’re done with the first!
